Zachary Richard is arguably the missing link connecting Cajun and English-language Louisiana music. He sings and writes in both French and English, two-steps like a rocker, and is equally comfortable on accordion and guitar. He's sort of a bayou Bruce Springsteen, too: in addition to belting out dance tunes based on such traditional local topics as filé gumbo, letting the bons temps roulet, and crawfish, he's capable of heartfelt songs about emotional anguish, poverty, and the great white French-Canadian north. This CD--on which he's accompanied by such musical friends as fiddler Michael Doucet, pianist Dr. John, and slide guitarist Sonny Landreth--distills the cream of his 14-album career, including an early-'70s folk track from his previously lost first album. --Richard Gehr

"Silver Jubilee" is an important piece of history for today's Cajun. It is a summary of a career that has spanned decades and continents. It manages to capture the sounds of the past and of progression and rolls them into one. It is both fun and moving at the same time, and it's all from the blood and sweat of one man: Zachary Richard.

Richard has the unique ability to play traditional Cajun songs such as "Madeleine" in a way that makes them sound both old and new all at once. He can then take a rather commercial-sounding song like "Crawfish" or "File Gumbo" and perform them in a way that makes you realize that he's not faking anything. When many country singers these days talk about driving their beat-up Ford to pick up their redneck girl so they can take a ride on the ol' John Deere, you catch on to the fact that these guys probably have limos and city-fied girlfriends who wouldn't know John Deere from John Paul Jones. Richard, however, sings in a way that tells you that he really does know how to eat crawfish, loves gumbo and can cut loose for a good time when he wants to.

On the other hand, Richard can perform a song like "Cap Enrage" or "Ma Louisiane" that will move you in ways you've never been moved before. I can't understand French that well, but listening just to the music of "Cap Enrage" lets me know that Richard puts his heart and soul into his songs.

No matter what he plays, you can easily see that Richard is not a poser. He's the real deal, full of intellect and dedicated to his people's past, present, and future. He plays with heart, not just to pay the bills.

It's hard to come up with words to describe just how much this album's music means to me. I guess you have to have a little Cajun blood in your veins to understand. Mr. Richard's music is, to me, a message wrapped in melody and mayhem.

If you have one drop of Louisiana in you, buy this important album.

For many years I have rejected the "lesser" music of Strauss family. But since New Year's concert is an institution in Classical music I have to admit that sometime I was to buy something. And since tradition is what matters most, far more important than the particular conducting or programme of every year, why not having a look at a sample of this history line of performances? I usually hate samples of works or concerts, but in this case I make an exception: here the whole is far greater than its parts. Here you have many conductors from Krauss to Ozawa (lacking Mehta and the more recent Harnoncourt and Janssons)plus Knapperstbusch (?) who was closely associated with WP albeit without conducting a NY concert. In all of them the orchestra plays splendidly. If I have to single out a conductor, it is Karajan but I should listen to all his recording to make a judgement. What is important here is that you have a sample of what tradition truly is, far outweighting a particular programme or conductor. And the reperoire: almost all favourite pieces are here. Almost: I think it is a valse,very well known, I think, featuring in other CD under Maazel, that is absent here. But the vast majority of famous walzes and polkas are here, and adding track durations it makes clear that they need 2 cds. Given that it is very probable not to have all of them in a single concert, so I commend you not to let pass this oportunity and grab this compilation, unless you want a complete concert in particular. There is another more recent but less complete, I think. 4 of 27 tracks are not taken in a NY concert, but in Sofiensalle, in another time, but all are alive, with the WP. The local edition of the CD has a brief but appropiate history of the concert series by the President of WP, Clemens Hellsberg. Besides, the double CD ends with Radevsky(?) March, with public clapping, as it should. In summary, a must.

Over the years DG has recorded more of the traditional New Year's concerts from Vienna than any other company, and they've mined their stock fairly often. Here is one of the very best collections, not a haphazard potpourri but a select cross-section of the best conducting from 1957 (Josef Krips) to 2002 (Seiji Ozawa). As it happens those are two conductors I wouldn't necessarily turn to for Strauss waltzes, but their contributions are buoyant and lovely. The same is true for eveyr cut on both CDs--one really gets into the spirit of a live concert and a festive occasion. Very nice.

    This album includes some of Dudley Moore's best-love jazz performances, recorded live in England and Australia by The Dudley Moore Trio--Dudley Moore, piano; Peter Morgan, bass and Chris Karan, drums. The performances on this CD were among Dudley's favorites. Dudley was President and co-founder Martine Avenue Productions, Inc., a company he created to bring his works to the public. Martine is proud to continue this work in Dudley's memory. Proceeds from the sale of this CD will go toward two charities that were important to Dudley--Music For All Seasons, taking live music into facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and shelters for children and victims of domestic violence; and the Dudley Moore Research Fund for PSP, searching for a cure for the disease from which he died in March of 2002.

      A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

        Album Description

        The powerful music of prayer and ecstasy that flowed through the heart of the San Francisco Sufi community in the 60s and 70s was originally released on several LPs and cassettes. "The Best of the Sufi Choir," a collection of sixteen songs, was released in 1994 as a CD, but has been out of print for many years. The collection is now available in a beautifully designed new edition. The legacy of Murshid Samuel Lewis, his teachers, and his teachings, can be experienced as a clear ocean of sound, sometimes intricately patterned, sometimes sing-along simple, always deeply intimate.

        William Allaudin Mathieu composer of the music on this CD founded the Sufi Choir in 1969, and directed it until 1982.

        Mathieu (b. 1937) is a pianist, composer, teacher, recording artist, and author. He has composed a variety of chamber and choral works and made numerous solo piano recordings. He has written three books on music — The Listening Book; The Musical Life; and Harmonic Experience: Tonal Harmony from Its Natural Origins to Its Modern Expression.

        Allaudin was a disciple of North Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath for 25 years. He studied African music with Nubian musician Hamza El Din, jazz with William Russo, and European classical music with Easley Blackwood.

        In the 1960s, he spent several years as an arranger/composer for Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington, and was the musical director for the Second City Theater in Chicago (which he helped found) and for the Committee Theater in San Francisco. In the 1970s, he served on the faculties of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Mills College.

        The past two decades Allaudin has devoted to composition, performance, recording, teaching, and writing from his home near Sebastopol, California.

            Good fourteen track release that would not only be like icing on the cake for the completists, but serve as a good introduction to any new and younger fans out there. Essentials like "God Save The Queen", "Anarchy In The UK" and my personal Pistols favorite "Pretty Vacant" are here with several good cuts that either I haven't heard before or I simply don't remember, like "Frigging In The Rigging" and "C'mon Everybody". A nice pick.

            This was the first Pistols album that I owened, and it was a bloody good introduction to the band. If the shop had 'Never Mind The Bollocks' I would have bought that, but in a way I'm glad they didnt.

            You see, most of the reviews on here say that the majority of the post-Rotten Pistols is bad, I however like most of it, and I probably wouldnt have bothered to look into it if I hadnt heard it on this disc, well at least not for a while anyway.

            The only real problem with this is that it includes 'Pretty Vacant' twice. I think they should have supplemented the non-live track for something else, I would have prefered something not on 'Never Mind The Bollocks', because if you consider youself a Pistols fan, you have to own that album, and the less doubling up possible the better.

            A good thing is that it ends strong, with a good, catchy Rotten song, 'EMI'. Also 'Friggin in the Riggin' is a good inclusion, as well as 'Silly Thing' with Paul Cook on vocals (Steve sings on the Swindle). The booklet included is fairly helpfull although some of the information in it is incorrect.

            All in all, quite a good cd, not as good as 'Never Mind The Bollcoks', but not bad at all. I do not believe the Sex Pistols, with John, ever recorded a bad song, and the best of the post-Rotten songs are included here as well. There is not a bad song on here. This is probably the most usefull compilation of the Sex Pistols I've seen, as it spans their entire career.

            Theyre not trying to hide anything here.

            I think this is one of the most underrated Sex Pistols albums, it is worth it alone for the two videos that enhance the CD. It features a very good quality "Friggin in the Riggin", which is a must, and also includes other scarely-heard songs, even if Johnny Rotten wasn't on vocals...

            This is a decent collection of their work, with the obligitory "God save the queen" and "Anarchy in the U.K.", but there are no real surprises. A nice addition was "EMI", but I have to cry foul for the omission of "Liar". Why leave that out and put the live (much newer version) of "Pretty vacant" on a greatest hits? had "Liar" been on the collection, I would have rated it 4 stars. Bonus points are awarded for "Friggin in the riggin" and "Rock and roll swindle", although I'm a bit of a purist, if Johnny Rotten isn't singing, it isn't the Pistols, but that's just me.

            All said, if you are a huge Pistols fan, you probably won't be happy with this, chiefly because you can get most of the songs on other CD's (which you probably already own). If you have never owned a Sex Pistols CD, this wouldn't be a bad start, but you may want to look around for a cheaper version of this, unless you like the "import" stamp on your cd case.
