Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Kelly's in a different "light".......2007-08-06

Despite the negative feedback from her producer, I enjoy listening to her voice on this CD. Some of the songs are more "rocky" than her usual style BUT... this is great music!

4 out of 5 stars Kelly does it again!.......2007-08-05

An angry CD, telling a story of breakup, love lost, confusion and self doubt in finding love, hard rock, more than pop. Different than Breakaway, more angry than blues, harder. But lots of energy, good variety in the songs. I love the last song Irvine, softer song. I look forward to Kelly's creative growth. I do recommend the CD; I am listening to it almost every day at work. But it is not the rollerblading, workout CD that Breakaway was.

3 out of 5 stars Talent Trumps Image.......2007-08-04

Kelly Clarkson far outshines her pop contemporaries on this cd. Mainly because she can actually, you know . . . sing.
A lot of the songs sound like "Since U Been Gone," both in subject matter of the lyrics and the full-throated, booming chorus. What caught me by suprise, though, were the softer songs on the album. They reveal the quality and subtlety of her voice.
Seeing as how she got her start on American Idol, I did not think Kelly was much more than a media creation. I grouped her in with Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears. After listening to My December I can see that Kelly Clarkson is in a whole other league.
Kelly Clarkson is one of the few good things to come from American Idol. And while I was not completely blown away by My December, it is good enough to make me wonder about the possible directions her music may take her.

5 out of 5 stars Should have sold more............2007-08-03

I can't understand why this album has not sold more and why it's gotten such bad reviews from critics. I think it's fantastic! Kelly has co/written great songs and I'm glad she fought to make the record she wanted. Way to go Kelly!

4 out of 5 stars Great but fades towards the end.......2007-08-01

The first few tracks are great. Kelly is trying new things but it still is classic Kelly. The songs get weaker though towards the end. Still good songs but not her best stuff.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars great music!.......2006-08-05

Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.

I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

More than any children's music release this year, Justin Roberts's Way Out makes you want to buy multiple copies and pass them out to friends--if only to prove that children's music can be unaccountably great. Justin's gift for transplanting himself into the psyche of an 8-year-old lifts him head and shoulders above his goofy-voiced peers. However, simply pinning Justin's talent on songwriting alone sells him short--few others (Dan Zanes, Ralph Covert and They Might Be Giants are exceptions) rock their records as hard. Way Out draws us way in, expertly mowing down musical age barriers and delivering us from the mistaken idea that kidstuff doesn't count. -Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Way Out CD by Justin Roberts.......2007-01-05

I was fortunate to walk past the librarian's desk and discovered a new CD of his. I LOVED it sooo much i had to buy his others immediately. I am so tired of the typical kids songs we have always heard. He is a humorous, talented lyricist sounding similiar to my favorites - Squeeze and the Cure. I was not disappointed - i can't wait for his next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! The best yet!.......2006-04-25

20 minutes after dropping my kids off at school, I'll realize that I'm still listening to Justin Roberts by myself. Truly great 'kids' music' that adults can enjoy, too.

The beat and brass on this one will get you moving.

Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Rescued from the Wiggles.......2006-03-16

We discovered Justin Roberts music on XM Kids radio one day, and my entire family was hooked. His lyrics are clever and surprising - and has brought my three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) to both giggles and quiet thoughts while listening. We dance to "Airplane of Food" and "Daycamp" almost daily, and we LOVE the "Humpty Dumpty" song - it's inspired a game where the kids dream up crazy things that Humpty can see while up on the wall.

We're anxiously awaiting his new "Meltdown" CD release on March 21st, and are proud to own all of his albums. We each have our favorite songs - and the kids (and I) fight over which one to listen to next. We've graduated from the Wiggles, and are never EVER looking back!

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and parents!.......2006-01-15

This is an upbeat, comical CD with great music for kids and parents. Parents, you'll find yourself listening to this music even when the kids aren't around! This will become your favorite kid music to play, I promise!

I have listened to over 10,000 songs in my lifetime and I will go ahead and say it. This is the best vocal performance in the history of recorded sound. I'm a little creeped out by the look he's giving me on the cover, but when I hear these songs, I climb to the tallest hill in Nebraska and sing songs from my favorite musicals like Chippy. I am numbed by the sheer perfection of this. Go Taylor, woo hoo!!

Amazon.com

As the winner of the fifth season of Nashville Star, Angela Hacker brings more than a hint of the soul music of her native Muscle Shoals to contemporary country. With her breathy alto and trace of a rasp, Hacker proves equal to the task of handling R&B classics "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" (originally recorded by Aretha Franklin) and "Hard to Handle" (though the steamy album closer sounds a little incestuous as a duet with her brother Zac, who also competed that season). Her debut album mixes studio versions of other standards that Hacker performed during the competition--"Strawberry Wine," "I Can't Make You Love Me" (the Bonnie Raitt ballad), and "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool"--but the combination of Hacker's vocal grit and her songwriting strength suggests that she's an artist of considerable promise. Her songwriting collaborations on "You Got Me" and "Emotionless" fit just fine with the familiar fare. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars the winner is...........2007-07-06

wow two years in a row on Nashville Star that I picked the winner and purchased the cd. Both were well worth buying. Angela's voice is a mix between Tammy Wynette and Lorretta Lynn. She has a very raspy yet very country voice. When I first heard her sing on Nashville Star, I knew she was going to be the winner! This cd is very good and well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Angela Hacker - Something Special!.......2007-04-11

Following Angela's triumphant performances on the Opry, I looked forward to her new Cd with renewed and even rabid anticipation. At last I would have a complete set of performances to substitute for and augment the bit and pieces of her music that I had managed to acquire from Itunes and elsewhere, and, moreover, one that was to be consistently and professionally produced.

I love the artwork and the generally "look." Though relatively simple, its use of browns and various shades of amber and blonde fit the ambience of our girl perfectly as does the generally rustic theme. It reminds me a little of the plain brown packaging of George Jones' multi-Cd set of hits from the 1950s released ten or so years ago. Moreover her photos, without appearing "Hollywood" or overly processed, are just lovely. Though the track listing was available before, I must confess to being a little disappointed that there were only ten songs. Missing in action were You Don't Even Know My Name, and Satin Sheets, which I had convinced myself might be made available (otherwise why would Angela promote it on the Opry?). It turns out that You Don't Even Know My Name is available, but only as a special download from Itunes, and only then if you buy the entire album from that source (a typical nasty trick by the business types in Nashville, especially as this song has been one of the most requested!!) We can only hope that Satin Sheets (my favorite performance by Angela of all time so far) might be among those chosen for the upcoming Angela/Zac album.

As expected the vast majority of songs are familiar, and most are remixed and reproduced versions of those that have been on Itunes for a while. These are comprised of: Strawberry Wine, I Can't Make You Love Me, Total Loss, I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool, and When Will I Be Loved. With only one exception, the new productions are successful, and flesh out the originals quite well. On When Will I Be Loved, for instance, harmony guitars are added making it sound more like the Linda Ronstadt version. Similarly, all have been layered to sound larger, and Angela's vocals are EQed to be rounder and warmer. The one exception is Total Loss. John Bohlinger's slide work is superseded by those of Steve Fishell, who has an excellent tone, but takes a simpler approach that in my judgment is less effective than John's denser and dirtier interpretation. Still, it is a very good song, and the new production does work. I just wish Warner's would pick it up and promote it as a single; it is far better than most everything else out there right now.

Two of the other songs, Love Me Wild, and You Got Me, are Angela originals and were scheduled for her independent Cd that she was to release if she didn't win Star. Her first efforts at recording them were available for a while on her myspace site (and were downloaded by larcenous if clever fans). The new productions succeed in transforming songs that were good and had potential into something exceptional. Wild is classic radio fodder, a good opener with a great hook propelled by the fairly standard theme of love as sex; You Got Me, however, is much more profound and features Angela offering her love to a man as an antidote to the pain of a broken relationship. She sounds sincere and loving. Last among those tunes with which we have already become familiar is Hard to Handle, appearing first on the last episode of Star and featuring Zac and Angela in a greasy Southern rock duet - very Stax! If you saw it you know it was and is excellent; a good time for all! The two work very well together and those years of local gigs have paid off in their emotional and wild performance here.

This leaves the two "new songs," an original, Emotionless, and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man, recorded first by Aretha Franklin. The first is powerful and like so much of Angela's work expresses impatience at unnecessary (unnecessary that is to women :-)) barriers to love. How can it be, she complains, that intimacy has inspired no emotion at all on the part of her recent lover (is there a woman alive that has not asked that question?)? It is a question, however, that would not even occur to most men (because we are all pigs of course lol). This is another song that could sound well on GAC and CMT, listenable and commercial. The hidden gem on the Cd, however, is Do Right Woman, which is probably why she chose to give it a special mention during her Opry interview. A classic soul ballad, Angela sings it effortlessly, and it gives us some insight into one of the directions we can expect her career to take.

Regardless of the songs, whether fast, slow, superficial, or soulful, the common denominator is Angela Hacker and her immense talent at interpretation. She is such a skillful singer, gifted with such excellent tone, technique, and phasing that she is able to take any song and make it her own, including, we expect, even Mary had a Little Lamb. This is the Cd's strongest aspect; it has good songs, one or two that are great, to be sure, but it is Angela and her at once unique and familiar vocals that drive the performances. In each tune there is at least one moment of brilliance on her part, a turn of phrase, a note being held etc., that collectively transform what might have been a raggedy collection into a strong album, one that would be a source of pride for most country artists. We have known from the first performance of the first Star (and some knew before then) that Angela had the potential to be something very special, and now here we have the first indication of the fulfillment of that promise. Just imagine what she and Zac are going to be able to do with time, a budget, and major label support? In this context, it is just possible that The Winner is . . . could assume legendary status as the genesis of a legend.

5 out of 5 stars Angela Rocks!!!.......2007-04-08

This is a really great CD. I loved this season's Nashville Star and have found that over the last few years, the QUALITY of performances have increased to such a point that any one of the finalists would make a great Nashville Star. This year was especially GREAT with the first brother/sister matchup and I was thrilled to see them both make the final two. That is what makes their duet "Too Tough to Handle" so great to be on this CD. Angela you go girl....you are rocking "OLD SCHOOL" country with your "OWN" sound somewhere between Marbara Mandrell and Patsy Cline.

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2005-02-26

Roger Day is one of the best children's entertainers I have seen. I first met him when I was scheduling him to perform at my children's elementary school. He was a big hit and has been returning every year. I also use his cds with my 3 year old preschool class and they love the songs. Almost every day one of them asks to sing "Helicopter Harry" or "If You Jump on the Bed". His songs are great for dancing and the lyrics are fun and unique. Every song contains a surprise or two. Any of his cds will be an instant hit with your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Rocks.......2004-07-05

We have seen Roger perform locally and my 3 year old son loved him. I ended up buying the CDs and his video. only drawback is I end up having to play them over and over and over.... for my son. The songs are fun, easy to sing to and make you want to get up and dance!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun songs with your Kids.......2002-01-20

My kids (ages 3 to 10) LOVE to sing along and do a silly dance with Roger's songs and imaginative lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Rhinos and Monsters and Hiccupopotami OH MY!.......2001-11-12

Ready To Fly is a 35 minute musical adventure limited only by your imagination. Fans of Roger Day's first kid's CD, Rock n' Roll Rodeo, will fall in love with the new set of characters including a hiccupping hippo, parachute-wearing girl, and a little boy named Harry who sprouts "helicopter hair" because he doesn't like to take baths.

Parents and teachers will delight in the lyrics and music as much as their children and will recognize some familiar artists singing background vocals (the Indigo Girls and Nanci Griffith). It's definately not your average kid's record...no syrup-y sweet sounds here...this record ROCKS!--kids and their parents can listen to it over and over again on the way to school, the grocery store, or on a rainy Saturday and not grow tired of it.

I always finish listening with a smile on my face--I feel like a 31 year old kid!

Their harmony-driven style veers from contemporary folk to country rock and pop. Each member switches off songwriting duties, lead vocals, and range of instruments including acoustic guitar, djembe, banjo, baritone guitar, and mandolin. The Village Voice has described this band as "Really Good, Really Unexpected, and Really Different."

5 out of 5 stars Great CD...Even better live show.......2005-10-06

I saw Girlyman with Dar Williams in Raleigh, NC. Great show!! This CD captures their unique harmonies and quirky edge. Great drive time music to beat the traffic jam blues.

5 out of 5 stars An instant favorite!.......2005-03-11

Not sure how I stumbled across Girlyman, but the group is my new favorite. The great lyrics and gorgeous harmonies have won them a prominent spot on my play list! They're coming to Seattle soon! I won't miss the show!

5 out of 5 stars One of my new favorites.......2005-02-23

It's always a thrill to be pleasantly surprised by an opening act you've never heard of. I first heard Girlyman when they opened for the Indigo Girls last fall, and was absolutely floored. "Say Goodbye," "Viola" and "The Shape I Found You In" are favorites, and their cover of "My Sweet Lord" is fun, although a little safe.

They were a fun band to see live. Girlyman possesses excellent stage presence and good-natured wit. I look forward to more great things from them.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Stipe meets the Indigo Girls.......2005-02-20

I first heard this group on the radioio eclectic webstream. The song was "Fall Stories." I noticed over the course of a month or so that every time that the song came on that I paid more attention to it. They have marvelous melodies that you just wished you could hear more of in mainstream music. I found their website and listened to their album. After one listen I ordered the CD and awaited its arrival. I thought they reminded me very much of the early Indigo Girls. Later on I joined their fan club in the hope they might eventually visit somewhere nearby. They are now signed on to the Indigo Girls record label so I hope there is enough marketing power behind them that they get to make a new album. The only weak song on the album is the remake of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." It isn't bad, but just not as great as all the other songs.

5 out of 5 stars Girlyman is incredible see them live.......2005-02-14

Girlyman is incredible see them live, the Remember who I am CD is wonderful, if you don't like this CD you have lost all Musical Taste! Love them Rock On!

4 out of 5 stars A LOVELY LISTEN, BUT I WAS NOT FEELING SOME OF THE 80S STUFF.......2007-03-11

this joint was bumpin' for the most part, however, for me, i would've focussed more on their 70s material and left out a great bit of that 80s stuff. YOU SEXY THING is one of the groovinest songs i have ever heard period. i also love EMMA, the original BROTHER LOUIE, DISCO QUEEN (sampled like crazy), and others i cannot think of, dang!!!!! if you that british thing in your funk/rock music, then you will dig this for sure. if you prefer their earlier material, then find a collection that focuses on that. the one i saw omits BROTHER LOUIE, which is a no no for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jams.......2000-08-28

Classic Jams here. You Sexy thing,Don't stop it now are Dance Jams that still Slam.truly one of the 70's Good Solid Groups.Alot of Fun.it's Cool they are getting a 2nd Life.

5 out of 5 stars Classic seventies soul.......2000-03-21

It has been a long long time since I had the chance to listen to anything by Hot Chocolate, since my vinyl is all stored away in a closet. I forgot how much I missed these guys. H.C. was everywhere on the radio in the seventies, with good reason. Happily, this collection has most of their best work.

The poignant "Emma", even leaving the 'message' aside shows their vocal abilities; deep and lush. But these fellas surely could burn down the house, and did so: "Every One's a Winner" is a classic, as is the now over-used "You Sexy Thing". They jam through "Don't Stop it Now", and "Could've Been a Lady" and even "Disco Queen". One of my personal favorites is "So You Win Again" for every one of us lucky guys who has been crushed by some gal (not to be confused with the similarly titled and messaged Hank Williams classic).

Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2000-02-27

Your sexy thing! My 20 year old son heard it on a commercial. I ordered the CD for him! Nice to know our young appreciate good music, such as Hot Chocolate!

5 out of 5 stars The music is a part of every listener's being, its fantastic.......1999-06-06

I have been listening to the Hot Chocolate since the late 70s, this is 1999 and the music is still very fresh in my whole Being. It is a Gold that everyone needs to have.

5 out of 5 stars A gem - just rediscovered.......2005-12-09

Back in 1979, when the Mothership was the only place I wanted to be and only the deepest funk jams would satisfy, a friend loaned me this 2LP set. It blew me away and God knows why I didn't buy it then.

In the last two weeks I was playing my copy of an Isleys compilation featuring the title track (blown away all over again)and as the price of Winner Take All has dropped sinfully low, I dived right in. Wow - all the things said here about an underrated album are 100% true. Since the first time I heard "That Lady" in 1973, this band have enthralled me and this blissful mix of silky vocals, blistering intrumental work, hard funk and lovely ballads means the fascination will continue...

Isleys, I love you, love you, LOVE YOU!

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Winner.......2004-08-23

This album is underrated, plain and simple. Back in the day people must have been turned off because it was a double album and it was the height of disco. Well even the tracks that have some disco nuances are still funky. The first 3 songs, 'I Wanna Be With You', 'Liquid Love' and 'Winner Takes All' are pure funk while 'Life In The City' clocks in at 8 minutes and has an extended breakdown with some serious guitar riffs from Ernie. The album slows down with the mid-tempo groove of '(Can't You See) What You Do To Me?' and slows down even further with 'Let's Fall In Love' one of their best slow jams. This isn't one of their more well-remembered albums but it's just as good as '3+3' or 'Go For Your Guns'.

5 out of 5 stars A undervalued classic.......2003-12-16

While other Isley Albums get better notice, this is a hot album. I wanna be with you, winner takes all, liquid love, and Disco night are tunes that made people move back in the days!!!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated greatness..........2003-07-24

I hate to throw the word 'underrated' around, but it applies here.

I'll go further.

This is one of THE underrated double albums of the 70s.

People will now shower praise on Songs in the Key of Life and Here, My Dear, but Winner Takes All tends to be unmentioned or passed over.

Maybe it is the few disco-esque dance jams that throw people off. Era biases aside, the uptempo songs on this album are generally winners.

And the Isleys don't lose when it comes to their 70s ballads and midtempo jams. This may be the smoothest set of those songs to appear on any Isley album even if they aren't the most celebrated.

The 1-2 punch that is the loosely-combined "You're the Key to My Heart" and "You're Beside Me" is undeniable goodness.

And "Let's Fall in Love" is one their second-tier beloved jams that is only on the second-tier because there was no room on the first one!

"Let Me In Your Life" is such a solid but unknown song that I want to tie people up and make them listen to it so that they can appreciate it (and being untied afterwards).

"How Lucky I Am" is another underloved slow piece.

Most double albums from any era are slagged for one of the following reasons:

- Too much of a departure from the artist's normal sound
- Too many songs/too long/too self-indulgent/etc
- The album gets boring
- Bad sequencing

IMO, Winner Takes All suffers from none of those problems.

In addition, buying this album will introduce most casual Isley fans to several good songs that they probably didn't know of before.

It is 2nd or 3rd on my list of favorite Isley albums. (I sometimes think Harvest for the World is better and Heat is On is my choice for THE best)
