They Are Giants Still...........2007-04-10
In all due fairness to the last reviewer's take on this Incredible project by the Ford Blues Band, and others...One can Never CAPTURE Michael Bloomfield, it was not meant to Be...For there was and always will be only One Michael Bloomfield...But each and Everyone of of the musicians here ALL had a common bond with Mike, they were All from the Same scene, and influenced by him, as Any musician would be. This is without a Doubt, one of the More exciting cds ive ever heard. No nothing is Ever perfect...But this one? Comes damn near it...From Robben Ford, Volker Strifler, Chris Cain, Andy Just, Patrick Ford, and others..Bravo..!! Michael would have dug this Big Time..God bless him. Mike was as its said, the Last American Guitar Hero bar none.
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "IDEAS ARE A DIME A DOZEN, BUT MEN WHO PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE ARE PRICELESS!".......2007-01-25
As they say, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" If intent was what the rating criteria was, this would be 5 stars, but the rating criteria is supposed to be based on actual quality! Though the Ford Band picked a classic subject, their performance is not! Their singing voices, have no range, and their guitar playing... just simply does not excel. Their strings, don't bend, reverberate, or snap! Artistically, it is a flat, uninspiring musical presentation. One high note (unfortunately the note I'm describing here isn't musical!) on the CD are the 5 "SNIPPETS" (Yes snippets!) of interspersed, interviews between every couple of songs with Michael Bloomfield. We're talking about seconds.. That's right seconds. Summary: the origin of most songs are historical, but their performance on this CD is forgettable. "Shaq" "The King Of Blues Reviews", has one parting question: "Why the hell, do they have "The 59th Street Bridge Song" (Feeling Groovy) by Paul Simon on this CD. I wouldn't buy this CD unless it was on the markdown, closeout table.
HARD TO CAPTURE A LEGEND, BUT................2005-03-15
Michael Bloomfield, is without a doubt an original. His work with Dylan will live forever in the annals of folk/rock. Then his fabulous turns on the first two Paul Butterfield albums propeled him to legendary status. The Ford Brothers do an effective job of trying to recapture the sound of this giant. Robben Ford and Chris Cain are two of the best guitarists in contemporary blues. Do they sound like Bloomfield? Who could... The playing is tight and crisp, with a terrific horn section... Groovin'Is Easy takes you back to that joyous time when the first Electic Flag album was released ... I doubt if Paul Simon envisioned Bloomfield's take on 59th Street Bridge Song(Feelin Groovy). As with every disk that comes from the Blue Rock'It label there is an unbridled love and reverence for the artist which makes this a worthy followup to their Butterfield tribute disk.
There were giants once........2002-12-26
There are some musicians that are unique. Why do other singers try to cover Aretha Franklin's hits? They just end up sounding stiff. Why try to imitate the tone of Sonny Rollins, the bare bones melodicism of Miles Davis? You will just sound thin in comparison.
Michael Bloomfield's guitar solos had a passion as unique as Aretha's. His tone was as fat and as pure as Rollins' or Davis' tone. He was able to play all the variations of the blues like no one I have ever heard. He did not necessarily play fast but you felt like he was playing with everything he had. When he was on his game he was able to encompass everything I felt in that tone of his and play my blues away. Many guitar players take up residence in the upper register of their guitars and never leave. Michael played the whole range of possibility. Listen sometime to the way he enters on "I've got a mind to give up living" from East-West. Some of his playing, like on East-West or The Live Adventures of Bloomfield and Kooper set standards by which I judge other players.
Why try to cover someone like that? In the case of Robben and Patrick Ford, the reason seems to be the desire for more people to discover, hear and appreciate Bloomfield's music. Like myself, they first heard Bloomfield as teenagers when his albums were coming out. Robben has never lost his admiration for Bloomfield's playing.
The other reviews tell you what you need to know about who is playing on this CD and what stands out. About that I will only say two things: it is sweet to hear such a FAT horn section again (does no one make soul-blues albums anymore with great horn sections?) and the guitar playing by all is fabulous.
My one note of caution- these guys do not capture Bloomfield. They are great and you can hear the influence but the sound is not the same. How could it be? If you are already a Bloomer fan, you might be better off making sure you have all of his great albums. Then, by all means, get these guys. This is my first album by any of the Fords and based on their work on this it will not be my last.
If you do not know Bloomfield this might serve as a good intro to his music and a guide to where to go next. One of the things that the Fords do that I love is they let you know what the albums were that they pulled these songs from. I also liked the interview with Bloomfield that they play snippets of throughout the CD. One of the other reviewers found them kind of eerie. Yes, but they also manage to make Michael an actual presence on the CD. The sound bites set up the songs really well and are short enough so that they will not become annoying upon repeated listenings. Very well done.
Overall, I appreciate what the Fords et al. have done. This CD is a wonderful tribute to my favorite blues guitarist (along with Magic Sam) of all time.
ANOTHER WINNING TRIBUTE FROM THE FORDS.......2002-11-14
I'm beginning to think the Ford Blues Band are in the tribute business. Two tribute albums in a row, and they're both hands down winners! First it was last years tribute to Paul Butterfield. And now his bandmate Michael Bloomfield. Both of these excellent artists were Robben Ford and his brothers biggest musical influences growing up in the 60's. For this tribute the Fords brought on board the very talented Chris Cain to join the band on guitar and vocal chores. Cain also cites Bloomfield as a big influence on his playing. They pour their hearts and souls into this project. Bloomfield was one of those players that was better suited as part of an ensemble. His solo albums, in my opinion left a lot to be desired. But put him in a live setting or in a band like Butterfield Blues or the Electric Flag, and you'll find one of the most brilliant and imaginative guitar players there ever was. Luckily, the music from this tribute is taken mostly from his band projects. One of the best tracks here is a remake of Paul Simon's "59th St. Bridge Song" (Feelin' Groovy) from the Live Adventures Of Bloomfield and Kooper. They did a killer version of this back then, and the Fords, notably Robben goes even farther and lays down some of the tastiest guitar playing of his long career. A great mix of retro 60's pop music mixed with cutting edge blues guitar, and it all works beautifully. Another great track is the Electric Flag's "Groovin' Is Easy". This is easily one of my favorite "feel good" rock songs of the 60's. It has an excellent big band sound, and the Fords lay down some of the tastiest horn lines you'll ever hear. They really do this one justice. The horns are great throughout, but the real star here is obviously the guitar. Besides Robben, you get some outstanding fretwork from Chis Cain and the very talented Volker Strifler. They really go to town on the instrumental tunes like "Stop" and "Peter's Trip". The singing is also strong throughout considering that literally everybody here gets in on the act. This is just a very talented group of musicians who really know what the blues are all about. Considering that this band has been together since the 60's, who better to bring back some our forgotten treasures. The little interview segments that Bloomfield does between songs here is also a nice touch. It's a little eerie though hearing Bloomfield, who's been dead for over 20 years now, talk about his bandmate Butterfield (also gone) and how intimidating a person he was to be around. As far as blues tributes go, you won't find any better done than this. The Fords are simply one of the best blues bands on the planet, and this tribute comes very highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20
The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.
The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.
Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.
Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.
Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01
I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.
So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!
Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27
Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.
JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11
JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.
The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.
Garland the Great.......2002-05-02
A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

LOVE THIS CD.......2006-05-18
I've liked Johnny Guitar Watson ever since "Real Mother For Ya". I love his play on words, and funny sayings and his voice is very unique. He can really play the blues. "Superman Lover" is such a good song, it's featured as a character's theme song in the movie "Roll Bounce". I wish a few other songs were included, but as far as an introduction to JGW, this is the CD to get.
Grand Master of Funk.......2005-07-05
The only man to really hit Funk right on the head, he owned it! Whenever I put him on in my car people who have never listened to him before enjoy him right away, his music was always pure enjoyment, the lyrics just made you smile so much.
First listened to him in 1979 in Berlin, and if I feel a bit low then he lifts me all the way up to the top, there was or is no one cooler than the great guitar man.
Regret never seeing him live on stage, he never seemed to get the recognition he deserved, is there anyone out there that is close to this man, I think not?
Johnny's the Man!.......2005-06-15
This is a good starting anthology of JGW. My only regret is that "The Real Deal" is inexplicably missing from it. That is a scat MASTERPIECE. Another thing the above viewer pointed out, is JGW's use of humor in his compositions. I mean, I just CRY when I hear Johnny vamp at the end of "Real Mother For Ya": "Gimme some of that low lead, I ain't gonna fool with nuthin' else! I gotta STOP buying TWO hot dogs and a strawberry soda!" I ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL! Every time. I LOVE this man, miss him. I discovered him too late to see him in concert, and that is my greatest regret of all. I play him almost every day. I smile when I hear his voice, his licks, his "Listen"'s between verses. This man IS a giant...right up there...with ANYONE you'd care to name. Johnny "Guitar"? YOU ARE THE FREAKIN' MAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everlasting.......2004-02-27
In need of uplifting vibes? Watson is like a fine wine: "it gets better as it gets older" (George Clinton). Listen - and adjust.
excellent.......2003-08-15
In an interview during the eighties Eric Clapton was asked whether he could name "his favourite guitar player". Johnny Guitar Watson was his answer. Nuff said...

Customer Reviews:
A little-known but very enjoyable live album.......2004-12-24
Subtitled "Live in Montreal", "Hoochie Coochie Man" was recorded in January 1977 at the Rising Sun Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Muddy is backed by his classic mid-70s combo, the sound is very good, and the entire band is crackin'. There's not a whole lot here which you won't find on several other live album from this area, but these performances are uniformly excellent, featuring an inspired Joe "Pinetop" Perkins at the piano.
A couple more up-tempo songs would have been nice...the album opens with the mid-tempo "Baby Please Don't Go" followed by two v-e-r-y slow numbers, but there are still plenty of highlights, like the swinging "Can't Get No Grindin'", a tough "Hoochie Coochie Man", and a great rendition of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Nine Below Zero". Even the 11-minute "Kansas City" doesn't overstay its welcome.
This is not an essential purchase, but it's an enjoyable one nonetheless. After you've got "Muddy Waters At Newport 1960", "Mojo: The Live Collection", "Chicago 1979", and "The Lost Tapes", check this one out as well...

This is your greatest hits CD, Johnny G was a master.......2004-09-30
Ignore all the compilations and "Best of Johnny's", because Ganster of Love and 3 Hours Past Midnight are your definitive recordings. Oh, my, this man smoked 'em out of the hall every time he picked up a guitar. You can hear Johnny's licks in most rock and blues played after this, but he played with style. I'm not a big fan of the 70's funk scene that he took part in, but his blues and rock & roll are all-time hits. It's right here. And get 3 Hours Past Midnight, another top-ten all-time rockin' & rollin' blues recording you'll wonder how you lived without. These two Cds never find their way back to the shelf in my house.
