5 out of 5 stars Santa Monica Jack.......2007-01-10

I am sixty one years old. First saw Ramsey Lewis at the London House in Chicago when I was 13 years old. First jazz I ever heard in my life and I got hooked. In Los Angeles there used to be a radio station 105.1 KBCA jazz 24 hours a hour. There was a show Rod McGrew and the Lion's Den. The show always started with The Love Theme From Spartacus rendition by Yusef Lateef from Eastern Sounds. This has become one of my favorite music renditions. Then I went back and revisted Ramsey Lewis's version of this song and it blew me away. The whole album brought back many great memories. Highly reccomend if you are an old geezer like me or enjoy good jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing sounds........2006-08-07

The In Crowd sound is as fresh today as it was when it first came out. Ramsey Lewis has his own unique sound in the field of jazz.

3 out of 5 stars Will the real Ramsey stand up?.......2005-07-15

Ramsey Lewis is just about the the most eclectic and accessible musician I know. Whether commercial circumstances demand gospel-inflected funk, bluesy jazz, electronic fusion music with a disco beat, or most recently "jazzed-up" versions of Bach and Puccini, he serves up the kind of music a sizable portion of the public wants to hear. Whether it's jazz or not is quite another question. If the audience that grooves to "The In Crowd" or applauds "Nessun Dorma" finds as much of value in the music of Bud Powell and Bill Evans, give Ramsey his due. Frankly, I don't hear anything of the musical revolution produced by Bird and Diz in Ramsey's playing. To my ears he's a variant on Don Shirley, a versatile pianist who was more an "interpreter" of jazz, pop, and classical styles than an exponent of any one of them.

Since Ahmad Jamal is another pianist who eschews the language of bebop and constrains himself to playing the most accessible music for the largest number of listeners, some comparisons seem inevitable. Whereas Ramsey practices great musical discipline to stay out of trouble, Ahmad applies equal restraint to avoid overwhelming his listener, always holding extra in reserve. Ramsey has a fluid, facile piano touch at times suggestive of Tatum's; Ahmad, always the dramatist, alternately produces sonic thunder and extracts crytalline, singing tones from the instrument. Ramsey can get the crowd involved in a responsive group dynamic, whereas Ahmad addresses the individual listener, constantly keeping him off balance with repetition nad variation, tension and release, even hypnotizing and transporting him into exotic rhythmic and tonal worlds.

"The In Crowd" probably represents the "real" Ramsey Lewis better than any of his other recordings. After Charlie Parker's death in 1955, musicians like Silver, Blakey, and Cannonball sought out larger audiences by making the music more bluesy, religious, and down to earth. Ramsey Lewis took it a step further, showing that music can be as basic as church hymns and still be identified by its listeners as "jazz." One thing is inarguable: for 45 years he's performed for a relatively stable congregation of listeners and, given the tricks up his sleeve, its membership is likely to keep growing.

You better believe that this is one of the coolest albums money can buy. If your into blues that swing, there is nothing better than "The In Crowd."

5 out of 5 stars The In Crowd's In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-12

This is Ramsey Lewis's most famous record. And I'm sure that many people just remember it as Ramsey's album alone, not the trio's, as Ramsey went on to be a star, a lot of people forgot about the original trio and most remember his more fusion stuff with electric synthesizers. But in fact this is very much the trio. I persnally love The Ramsey Lewis Trio. They are my favorite group. I don't like Ramsey as a solo artist. Because he probally won't do anymore reunions with the old trio, I couldn't care less if he fell off the face of the earth. Anyway:
I first herd this song on the radio. I didn't think much of it, because I thought it was just some rock/latin guy, because it doesn't swing, it's just a simple latin drum beat, with a cool bass line and melody. Well, my dad bought the whole album, because he like The In Crowd. And I'm sure like many people in the sixties when it first came out, who like stuff like The Beatles, and Rolling Stones listened to In Crowd and didn't care for the more jazzier stuff and never listened to it ever again. Same story with my dad. I loved jazz much much more than he did, so he gave to me. I fell in love with it. I then ruined it. I guess it fell and now was unplayable. For about a month, I was without Ramsey. I then picked Ramsey Lewis's Finest Hour. That had some neat songs on it. Then I slowly abtained more and more recordings. Actually, very slowly. I bought like one album, which were all like best of's (which I hate) and fairly weak albums. (like live stuff)I still have yet to get all 15 or so of the trio's albums. It's a shame only The In Crowd has been released. All other of the trio's albums can only be found on record, and it's hard to find them. Anyway, back to this disk. The original album itself is weak, because it has less songs, and ends on a slow ballad, but with the cd version and bonus tracks, it was a neat album. Tennesse Waltz and Felicade are the two standouts. The Party's Over, Talkin Bout You, and Theme From Sparticus are next in line. If you ask me, In Crowd's too far overrated. I can only play a couple times a week without getting tired of it. This is a classic album, and was also a turning point for the trio. With the success of this album, the trio couldn't handle it and disbanded two albums later. The albums after it like Hang On Ramsey are not that great. This was the trio's last good album!

1 out of 5 stars Is this LTJ?.......2007-02-05

This is such a generic sounding alblum. It's terrible stay away at all costs. Their new direction is so bland and boring its sickening.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2007-01-22

I'm a big LTJ fan. I've listened to their old albums repetitively over the years and I was really impressed by this one. I agree with the other people that reviewed this album, it's more 'poppy' and less ska/punk as the other albums have been, but I still think it's a great album. My favorite track has to be 'In-Dependence Day', it sounds a bit like the older songs and has a catchy chorus and beat. I love all the songs on this CD, though. Keep it up, LTJ, you're doing great!

1 out of 5 stars This is depressing..........2007-01-21

You know...as I listen to the GREAT LTJ albums "Losing Streak", "Hello, Rockview" and "Borders and Boundaries", I can't help but think "WHAT HAPPENED?!". Losing Streak is an album I can listen to from start to finish multiple times without getting bored, there isn't one bad song. Then I listen to this and it doesn't even sound like the same band. Right when I heard "She's Gonna Break Soon" from "Anthem", I knew they were heading a direction that was basically abandoning their ska roots and I hate to say that I was right. What a shame...

4 out of 5 stars Need to add my thoughts.......2007-01-16

OK so i was like many of you guys, i got the new album and immediately thought WOW this sucks, and put it on the shelf. then some time passed and i went to my cds and said "hey i'll give it another try", and that was two months ago and i haven't stopped listening yet. like many of you i have been following LTJs career for a long time. first heard them around the release of pezcore when i was 17 and i've been hooked ever since. fast forward to me at the ripe ago of 30 and i'm still hooked. yeah the sound may have change a bit and they don't use the horns as much (which they need to), but it is still LTJ, no doubt about it, the songs, the lyrics, the playing and everything else. this is one of those rare bands that i've kept up with for 10+ years and they have yet to disappoint. i mean sure i wish every album was pezcore or losing streak, but it can't be that way, we don't live in a vacuum. also i would never say they sound like good charlotte or any of those crap MTV bands, if anything good charlotte sounds like less than jake. i mean when i hear LTJ i know it's LTJ, i don't compare them to other bands cause LTJ is there own sound. even though it has changed over the years it is still the same LTJ i fell in love with 10+ ago. there, now i feel a little better...

4 out of 5 stars A strong offering from LTJ, as they head into a new direction.......2006-12-02

Well, first off I am a 16 year old who is too lazy to create an account and I actually started my five album LTJ library with this one. I heard "Motown Never Sounded So Good" from Anthem at a friend's house, and I thought I would pick up the newest album. I am actually very impressed, and while I see now after buying the older albums that they do not retain the same ska elements as they did in albums such as "Losing Streak" and "Hello Rockview", "In With the Out Crowd" is a very enjoyable rock album from a band who obviously went in a new direction. Here is the track by track breakdown:

1. Soundtrack of My Life - A good opener that I thought sounded much like songs from the album Anthem, which I liked a lot. Somewhat poppy, but a fun track. 8/10

2. A Still Life Franchise - Hands down my favorite track on this album. It was the first I heard of any LTJ at all with any good horns. Repetitive chorus, however I love it anyways. Very nice. 10/10

3. Overrated (Everything Is) - I really don't know why the other reviewers are giving this a 1/10. It isn't that bad to deserve such a low score, but it isn't worth a high one either. The song was obviously made with the intention to give LTJ a radio hit. It is a poppy song and that was the apparent goal. I don't care for it, but I do not despise it like the rest of them. 5/10

4. Fall Apart - Makes up a bit from the last track. Not a ska song but it's a good rock track anyways. 8/10

5. In-Dependence Day - I don't mind this song, but it wouldn't make my day bad if I skipped it. I skip it 60% of the time. 6/10

6. Don't Fall Asleep On The Subway - Cool track. Has some horns. Sounds like a mix of Anthem and Hello Rockview. 8/10

7. Landmines and Landslides - I like this track a lot. No horns, but for some reason I like it a lot. Reminds me of New Found Glory, who I still like a little bit. 9/10

8. The Rest of My Life - This song is almost a ballad. It is a really good rock song. No horns but I really enjoy it. One of my favorites on the album. 9.5/10

9. Mostly Memories - Good, fast track. Enjoyable with horns and other things. Sounds more like the old, but only a little bit. 8/10

10. Let Her Go - This song sounds the most like something from Hello Rockview or Losing Streak. Has the ska guitar style and almost everything is there. Really good. 9/10

11. Hopeless Case - Another good track. I enjoy the style of this song. The singing is good and is more defined in this song. Stands out from the rest of them in that it has its own sound to it. 8/10

12. P.S. Shock The World - This song is one of the best on the disc. It has horns, and if anyone has heard "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" from Anthem, then they will think of it when they hear this at first. It starts to turn back to the new LTJ sound in the chorus and such, but it is still a very good song. 10/10

Also, LTJ released a b-side to this album on their Myspace (although I am not sure if it is still on it):

"13". Only Human - Has the horns back! I am not sure why this song was removed from the final album, it would have been a great song to have in there. Good singing, great use of the horns, and just everything is good. 9/10

Album Description

"A remarkable recording." - REPERTOIRE

The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spirited performance of charming work.......2007-03-10

This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.

5 out of 5 stars Alexander's Feast - English version.......2006-02-26

This recording is a very complete version of Alexander's Feast, following the composer's practice of inserting other pieces to create a performance of appropriate length. Excellent soloists, orchestra, and chorus. A high quality recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of Handel's great works.......2005-11-19

I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.

5 out of 5 stars Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22

"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

    3 out of 5 stars Sheer mediocrity.......2007-03-12

In the '60's, you could expect great things from anything Clapton released, and you'd usually get them. But his solo career was consistently inconsistent. On the high end of the specturm are discs like Unplugged and 461 Ocean Blvd. On the low, Back Home and Backless (any album with "back" in its title by Clapton is bound to suck). This occupies the space between the two - killer in places, filler in others. A bare minimum of blues (the only blues song is The Sky Is Crying, and naturally it's the best here). Instead, it's all either reggae, completely insincere soft-rock or slightly harder, but still completely insincere relatively hard rock. Of course, the soft rock's hard to listen to, but nothing's as bad as Wonderful Tonight (though Pretty Blue Eyes and High come close), and I like Better Make It Through Today. No, the best stuff here is the reggae (Swing Low, Sweet Chariot) and the rock (Little Rachel). If you're a Claptonophile, buy it if you wish, and I will insist you could do much worse. But don't expect Layla.

You know who you are. The long-time fan of Clapton's, the person in the audience nowadays yelling "Go Slowhand!" as Eric plays lick after passionless lick, the dude who wishes Eric would reunite with Cream for good. If so, this is not for you. Sorry. If it's any consolation, I used to be one of you. Somewhere down the line, my road forked off and, at the tender age of 20, here I am saying that this album is too subtle for most. What is the world coming to? What sense could I have? Hear me out.

The genius behind these songs is not in the mindless soloing, or the screeching vocals. In fact, the record has neither. Rather, it's "There's One In Every Crowd"'s economy that gives it a five-star charm. Most words are barely spoken over a whisper. Most solos barely reach above the tenth fret. And they barely last more than thirty seconds. Instead, the album is full of melodic, moody guitar playing, and breathy even sexy singing. And, God, what a band- they're guaranteed to hit the groove that will either make you melt or shiver by the time the last seconds of "Opposites" dissappear back to 1975. That is, unless you're the guy mentioned above. If you are, again, I'm sorry...your loss.

    2 out of 5 stars Let's Get Real Here..........2005-11-19

I would have given this 3 stars just to be polite to a man whose music I respect very much but with all of the 4 and 5 star reviews on this site, someone needed to step in and provide some balance. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is nice and EC's cover of The Sky Is Crying is pretty good but I'd lean toward Elmore Jame's original or SRV's before this one. I'm a long-term EC fan, from his days with the Yardbirds on. If I had a penny for every time I've listened to him play a tune, I'd probably own Amazon! So I love the man and his music and I'm not calling this a BAD disc. I'm just trying to put some dynamic range in the rating process. There are people out there that use these reviews to make buying decisions and if you're one of them, I'd hope that you already had at least 20 Clapton CDs before you point your credit card at this one.

    3 out of 5 stars 461 Out takes.......2005-11-18

Eric Clapton came out in the Summer of 1974 with 461 Oceam Blud. What happened is that the band did so many songs for that session that all were not incuded on 461.
What we have here is essentially an album of out takes that did not make the cut.
Many should have also been out takes for this CD as well.
Clapton is very laid back and does not resemble same man we heard with Cream or Derek and the Dominoes.
Songs on note on this album are The Sky is Crying the classic Elmore James song. This is an outstanding effort by Clapton.
Better Make It Through Today is a slow blues song that Clapton wrote himself. I has always been my favorite song on this album.
Pretty Blue Eyes is a nice acoustic song with an added dobro. I like the combination on this song quite well.
High is another song that Clapton wrote and another worthy effort.
Opposites finishes the CD on a strong note. This is not one of his best CD's but does have some good songs. This is for collectors only.

      3 out of 5 stars Catch 22.......2006-07-25

This album just isnt the same as Keasbey nights. It seems that songs aren't as catchy or as good as mostly every song on Keasbey Nights. Its still an allright follow up to their debut album.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply a great CD.......2006-03-11

Ska/Ska-core/Ska-punk, whatever the hell it is called, this is an incredible cd. Not necessarily my "type" of music, but a CD this good can be enjoyed by more than just ska fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent followup album, possibly superior to the debut........2005-04-07

Deftly avoiding the sophomore jinx, a restructured Catch 22 (sans original members Jamie Egan, Tomas Kalnoky, and Josh Ansley, adding bassist Pat Kays, guitarist Pat Calpin, horn player Mike Soprano, and Jeff Anderson on vocals) returns to the ska-punk sound that made 1997's "Keasbey Nights" a standout.
"Alone In A Crowd" builds on the darker, more violent themes of the band's earlier work, slamming death, regret, failure, abuse, neglect, and violence into thirty-three minutes (minus three minutes of dead air hiding a bonus track) of pure energy. Some of the tracks ("What Goes Around Comes Around", "Point The Blame", "Arm To Arm") easily equal or even surpass the "Keasbey"-era work, and the album never drags. A punked-out cover of the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B" adds a needed spot of brightness to the album's major thematic movement, the tale of two young lovers caught up in murder and mayhem in middle America. This album is reckless, ruthless, and an absolute blast to listen to. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

      Five stars isn't enough.

      5 out of 5 stars ska.......2004-08-30

okay this is a great cd. i like it more every time i listen to it. Im not sure if its as good as Keasby Nights but it is definitely close. heres what i think:

      1. Intro-not much to say except its a great intro for a ska cd

      2. Point the Blame-this is a really catchy song, and the horns are excellent, and its even got a nice little guitar solo which is rare for catch 22. one of my favorites on the whole cd

      3. Sounds Good, but I Dont Know- Good song. it kinda leans towards hardcore with horns but its got a really cool horn interlude at the end.

      4. It Takes Some Time-I love this song, its one of the first songs i heard by them. great bass line, great horns, and its really fun to sing along to, very upbeat! and its even got a little string break towards the end. thats cool

      5. What Goes Around Comes Around-This is a badass song. i love everything about it

      6. Arm to Arm-this ones pretty good. its my least favorite out of the ones ive mentioned so far but the horns are still pretty cool

      7. Guilty Pleasures-Heres a great song. i love how it builds up. one of my favorites

      8. Bloomfield Avenue-I think this might be the best song on the whole album. it starts out slow then the horns come in and they sound bad ass just like the entire song. the chorus is awesome to scream along with.

      9. Hard to Impress-heres yet another really good song. more really cool horns and great everything else as well

      10. San Francisco Payphone-Pretty good song, its kinda sappy but its not bad.

      11. Wreck of Sloop John B.-umm this is a beach boys cover. i guess its cool if you like the beach boys. i think it would have been better if they found a way to put some horns in it though. oh well its still better than listening to the beast boys

      12. Neverending Story-I really like this song, its really fast and the horns do a great job as usual.

      13. Thinking About Things-I didnt like this song at first but its actually pretty good. its the last song the horns get to do their stuff.

      14. Alone in the Crowd- The self titled track, obviously. its just guitar and vocals for most of the song but it still a good one.

well thats it besides the hidden track but thats not really anything...enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Music is Good, Message is Not.......2004-05-15

I'm sure every fan of Catch 22 (real fan, that is) has listened to Alone In a Crowd and liked it. To tell the truth, the music isn't bad. So Tom was kicked out, the stuff is still pretty good. And then you put the white cd into the stereo, and the first track is just whatever. Then the second starts to sound pretty good, and you like it. But please, do NOT like that song.

Hidden within the lyrics of the song are subliminal messages, aiming at making fun of Tomas Kalnoky, the genius writer of C22's original album "Keasbey Nights". It is sickening to hear the hate that is thrown out at him.

But you will be happy to know that in his next amazing piece of work, Streetlight Manifesto's "Everything Goes Numb", he takes out his own little fun. Listening to "A Moment of Silence", one will hear a line that is like this..."if you hate me so much then stop singing my songs."

I would like to say, Catch 22, continue to make good music, but keep your feuds to yourselves, because you threw out one heck of a musician.

This is the type of album that any fan of 60's british R&B/Mod should own. Not a single bad song in the bunch. Tons of groups that you can't find anywhere else (The Eyes - I'm Rowed Out). Just 100% pure unknown rock gems. Don't hesitate...just pick up a copy. You won't regret it.

The main album, a very insightful DVD on making the album and a data disc that has 75 mp3s of remix songs, live performances and screensavers and pictures. If you're a big enough fan I would suggest getting it. You'll feel pretty special.
