The girl group Xscape could sing their butts off and went gold, but they never quite crossed over to mainstream (read: white) audiences. Relegated to ghetto goddess status, Xscape hung up their weaves a few years ago, and each member is now doing her own thang. Chief among them is Kandi Burruss. If the name doesn't ring a bell, Kandi's songs--which include "No Scrubs," "Bills, Bills, Bills" and a host of other smoking-hot, chart-topping collabos with She'kspere--will. They have made her a Grammy-winning, platinum-selling, in-demand writer. Fortunately, as evidenced by her solo debut, Kandi didn't sell all the good stuff. She has a clear, powerful voice that has a welcoming tone even when she's delivering songs that range from "my man done been cheating on me" rump shakers to "my man done been cheating on me" ballads. Yes, her thematic POV is a bit limited, but does that make the finger-wagging glee of "Don't Think I'm Not" any less delicious? Listening in on Kandi's soap opera world can feel like a guilty pleasure at times, and her conversational style matched to She'kspere's shake 'n' bake beats is not great art. Hey Kandi... would have been more impressive and fresh if she hadn't given her style away to the likes of TLC and Destiny's Child two years before its release. Some tracks stand out, but most sound the same,

i love this CD, it is so great. the first time i ever heard i fell in love with and knew i had to get it again. i think kandi is a great writer and excellent singer and she did her thang on this album. you go girl!!

Boring..........2005-12-17

The only song I like is "Don't Think I'm Not". The other songs are extremely boring. I don't reccommend it; Destiny's Child's music was way better during this year.

While I feel that Kandi has a great voice, what makes this album less pleasing is the lyrical content. What is up with all these ugly themes? It makes it seem like she's had a history of finding love in all the wrong places. There are only four tracks that stand out, "Hey Kandi", "I Wanna Know", "Talkin' About Me" and "Easier"(being that the lyrical content is a lot different than what dominates the entire disc). Note to Kandi: Sing and write songs that are not only based on your personal experience, but based on everyday life.

this album was not good at all. there were only two tracks that I can actually listen to; don't think I'm not and I wanna know. I heard the group is supposed to be getting back together. I hope so because they make good music together. 2 stars for the 2 tracks of the cd I paid almost $20 for.

Hard Kandi.......2001-09-29

When it comes to writing about drama in young-adult relationships, no lyricist comes close to Kandi Burruss these days. Songs like TLC's "No Scrubs," Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills," and Mariah Carey's "X-Girlfriend" will make you nod your head in agreement or make you wince. Her frank and honest lyrics don't beat around the bush, and they show that Kandi herself may have had her share of drama in relatiosnhips. I bought the album, hoping she would expand a bit and reach beyond the "my-man-is-a-loser" lyrics. The album's true gem is "Don't Think I'm Not," which is about a scorned lover who gets revenge on a cheating man by "getting hers," too. But after a half-dozen like songs that whine about "how-my-trifiling-man-did-me-wrong," things get one-dimensional and predictable really fast. One has to wonder how she even ends up with these men in the first place. In any case, she may call herself Kandi, but this debut CD is hardly a confection.

"Hey Kandi" title song tells the story that Kandi has what it takes to be a grammy award winner! When I first heard "Don't think I'm not" I fell in love with with Kandi's voice. she definitely have a little of that TLC sound. She really let go with some cuts like "Cheatin' on me" "Easier(duet with Faith Evans)and"I wont bite my tongue."Hey Kandi" is one of the best albums from a solo artist who was once in an excellent singing group.
