Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

this might be the worst cd i have ever heard. there is only 1 good song on here, snitch. the rest of this album is so bad its rediculis. dont buy this
Obie earns spot in hip-hop.......2007-02-23
Granted, the album could have gone without a few songs... but the quality of the majority of the music more than makes up for the lack of originality on certain tracks. Considering, however, that every major-label-released album takes swings at making that one "hit", Obie spits venom on enough tracks to merit the "5 stars" I gave it. Trice steps out of his Shady/Aftermath shell on his sophomore album, showing his true prowess as an mcee. Unlike Cheers, this album's fuel is all Obie Trice, both as a person and as one of the greatest mcees in the game. I believe this is one of the most over-looked albums of the year. Had more artists been as talented, original, and unrelenting as Obie Trice, whether or not hip-hop is dead would never be an issue. Cop this album: you won't be dissapointed
Better than first album?.......2007-01-31
Obie Trice seems comfortable, and lyrics flow better than first album. Album sounds lower budget than Cheers, but the rest makes up! I still say Cheers is better. If you like Obie Trice you'll like this CD it's not as disappointing as other reviews claim!
The album may give you a hangover, but Obie's lyrics won't fade away like memories of the night before........2007-01-24
Obie Trice is, hands down, the best emcee Eminem ever happened to sign. I don't agree with those who say Obie Trice is the best emcee in the Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit family - that honor goes to Raekwon, as well as Eminem himself - but to say that he is the best emcee signed to Shady records itself wouldn't be an overstatement. Obie Trice plays the critically-acclaimed member of the Shady crew; while 50 Cent is the outrageously commercial solo artist, and D12 is the often-maligned group, Obie manages to secure the positive reviews, but fails to top the charts. There's one possible explanation for this; Obie Trice is the average man. He releases music that anyone can relate to, yet he doesn't have a strong marketing gimmick to push platinum sales.
But, has Obie managed to release some of the best records from his extended family? Sadly, i can't say yes. Cheers was a great record, with strong production values, but it was second-rate when taken in account the quality of Shady Records' other projects at the time. Shady Records has since fallen out of the limelight, and has only sporadically released albums lately; Second Round's On Me was one of the few albums that managed to avoid slipping through the cracks, and seeing a release date. When it was released, I did check it out; however, I didn't think much of it at first. I was expecting another Cheers, with all-star guest appearances, and a billion-dollar budget - what I received was an album that was entirely Obie Trice.
Second Round's On Me is so much more personal than Cheers was. Obie's near-death experience brought out a far more focused, and insightful Obie; his trademark humor is still present, yes, but it's not the basis of his persona anymore - he takes the Average Man concept that opened Cheers, and extends it throughout the entire duration of this album, which results in an album that takes a step towards defining Obie as not only an artist, but a man. I know that Obie Trice has a classic album in him, but Second Round's On Me isn't quite it; however, the classic album is most certainly on it's way, and you definitely won't be dissapointed with Second Round while you await it.
Highlights come from the majority of the album; Wake Up gets things off to a great start, with a nice beat from Em, and some ill lyrics from Obie. Wanna Know is phenomenal, and proves Emile should've contributed more to the album. Snitch is one of Akon's premier collaborations, while the Ballad of Obie Trice is another introspective song, with some nice funk from Eminem behind the boards. Jonathan Rotem is quickly becoming one of hip-hop's go-to producers, all three of his offerings on this album warrant his spot as one of the mainstream's most recognizable beatsmiths; Trey Songz also make a guest appearance on two of these tracks, and proves why he's one of the best modern voices in R&B.
While the album isn't perfect(some of the production is poor, and it's a tad bit long), it's just as good as Cheers, and more importantly, it's an Obie Trice album in name and execution; not a "Shady Records Presents: Obie Trice" release where he gets smothered by guest appearances. Obie still shows room for improvement, but you can't be mad at this release; pick it up.
OBIE DID A GOOD JOB........2007-01-19
THIS IS THE FIRST OBIE TRICE CD, I'VE PURCHASED. I AM PLEASED WITH IT. HE HAS A UNIQUE STYLE. I WILL CONSIDER BUYING MORE IN THE FUTURE.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14
Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

"Best Harpsichord Recording".......2005-11-05
I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.
Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.
Great.......2005-08-09
This CD is very very good just what I was looking for. I highly recommend this CD if you are planning on purchasing a Harpsicord CD, this one is the best.
a must-have for harpsichord lovers.......2004-04-30
I love the sound of this most unusual instrument, the harpsichord. Especially the fast intricately melodic songs. Very enjoyable. This "Greatest Hits" includes many compositions perfectly suited to this wonderful old predecessor to the piano. There's even a little funny trivia thrown in: on the song sheet is written: Q:"what did the famous conductor Sir Thomas say that the harpsichord sounds like? A: "Like two skeletons screwing on a hot tin roof" :)

keeno.......2001-01-08
This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.
This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.
The Most Superb Harpsichord Sampler.......2000-07-27
I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and amusement, you cannot go wrong with this recording.

Today, English composer William Byrd (1540-1623) is mostly remembered for his vocal works, but his keyboard output--a vast array of pavans, galliards, plainsong interpretations, preludes, and popular-song arrangements--is just as noteworthy. Indeed, as Byrd sought to find his voice in writing music for the (relatively) new instrumental genre, he employed experimentation, creativity, and virtuosity that still sound fresh today. This ambitious set features virtually all Byrd's keyboard music, performed by Davitt Maroney on a handful of replica instruments. Spread over seven CDs (and with a solid 100 pages of liner notes dissecting the works), it's an impressive set for keyboard buffs and people curious about what music in Elizabethan England sounded like. Throughout, Maroney plays these challenging pieces impeccably, whether on harpsichord, church organ, clavichord, or muselar virginal (a type of plucked keyboard instrument). Sometimes musical labors of love don't translate to good listening, but in the case of William Byrd: The Complete Keyboard Music, we should all be thankful for Maroney's efforts. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Very, very nice set.......2003-08-23
I've been a fan of William Byrd's choral music (and have performed a few pieces, such as the Mass for Five Voices), but this is the first time I've really gotten deep into his keyboard music. I was not disappointed.
Some period keyboard recordings sound relentless--I have to admit that I cannot endure more than about 45 minutes of harpsichord music at a sitting, because it just lacks too much color and variation. Moroney has dealt with that by using a collection of period instruments and varying the mix. But (unlike Glenn Gould) he does not add in the piano. (I think the piano has a superior sound, simply because its dynamic range is wider, but it's wrong for Byrd's period. Moroney has answered that pretty well without cheating.)
If you are a polyphonic, contrapuntal music maniac the way I am, you will really enjoy wallowing in this stuff the way a hog wallows in mud. (OK, maybe I feel a little guilty for pigging out on Byrd music by buying 7 CDs of it. But I only feel a LITTLE guilty.)

If you're even _looking_ at this set of music, then chances are that you are already enamoured of either it (under the guise of a different performer) or similar early keyboard music. So . . . um . . . what are you waiting for?!? If such a thing as "definitive" Byrd exists on recording --- _this_ is definitive! The instruments (two organs, two harpsichords, a muselar virginal, and a clavichord) are breathtaking --- especially the muselar in "The Battell!" (Yes, the poor thing's a little clackety, but --- holy cow!! You'll hear what I mean.) And Moroney's technique does complete and utter justice to the music. I remember futzing my way through _The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book_ and _My Ladye Nevell's Book_ like a clod; Moroney, in contrast, makes the notes spring off of the pages and into life, with generous (but not overbearing) ornamentation and sprightly tempi (never too fast, never too slow, but always "just right" - I can't say such a thing very often). I don't know if Byrd sounded like he does here, but I can't imagine this music sounding any better. I'm done raving now. ;-)
a delight.......2001-01-28
As I write this I am listing to one after another of these CD. One can find scraps of this keyboard of the Tudor age on all sorts of `collection' CDs from `The Best Of ...' to those really featuring `a consort of viols' or the lute. Variation, I guess. And, of course, there is a large collection of Byrd on MIDI.
This set surpasses all of those by an astronomical margin.
Some will not like this set. If one enjoys Rap turned to an ear bleeding volume at 4 in the morning the chances are that you will not care for this quiet, intellectual music.
Likewise if your idea of the sounds of everlasting bliss is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rendition of A MIGHTY FORTRESS ... well ,you're going to recall that Byrd was a Catholic and lay curses against these truly wonderful works from Nephi to the border.
Everyone else needs this set.
I have more then 200 classical CD. These 7 are recorded well, the notes are great, the playing top notch and the music itself exquisite.
Excellent Set, Authentic perfromance.......2000-06-29
This wonderful set contains all Byrd's keyboard work, from organ to harpsichord. The playing style of Moroney is greatly correct and neatly fresh. His interpretation of these almost neglected music is wonderful. The touch and the tone of his performance, as well as the ornament, is natural and elegant. This is a must for those who love old keyboard music. The record is excellent too.

happiness takes place in small piano tunes.......2001-07-24
these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.
Cacaphonic Harmonious.......2001-07-15
Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

Up for album of the year.......2007-02-22
Granted, the album could have gone without a few songs... but the quality of the majority of the music more than makes up for the lack of originality on certain tracks. Considering, however, that every major-label-released album takes swings at making that one "hit", Obie spits venom on enough tracks to merit the "5 stars" I gave it. Trice steps out of his Shady/Aftermath shell on his sophomore album, showing his true prowess as an mcee. Unlike Cheers, this album's fuel is all Obie Trice, both as a person and as one of the greates mcees in the game. I believe this is one of the most over-looked albums of the year. Had more artists been as talented, original, and unrelenting as Obie Trice, whether or not hip-hop is dead would never be an issue.
An otherwise excellent album diluted.......2007-01-27
Don't get me wrong, I like this CD and gained mad respect for Obie Trice as an emcee after listening to "Second Round's On Me." Perhaps the most talented rapper in Eminem's camp gives a vivid tour of Detroit's 'hood, taking you along for a ride that lets you see & feel what it is to live there.
Like Chicago, New Orleans and Oakland, Detroit is str8 up gangsta (of course, I knew that) 4 real! Obie paints a picture on this album of his hometown as a place where haters and troublemakers roam seeking confrontation, making holding some heat more a necessity for protection & trying to keep the peace.
It's within the context of this great paradox that Obie Trice comes off as honest, cool, easy to relate to and more genuine than some super thug braggin' 'bout how hard he is. While the content of this LP is very real & very serious, listen closely and you'll realize he's a peaceful brotha not promoting violence or gunplay so much as recounting his own personal encounters with this kind of last resort self-defense. That's perhaps the redeeming quality that makes his rhymes artistic and his tales less cliche.
Obie is gritty on this album and for the most part he's on point as a rapper and storyteller. My main beef (why I gave this CD just 3-stars) is this album opens with 10 strong tracks (well, nine actually since I could give or take "Jamaican Girl") but gets brought down by an overkill of commercial songs that seem out of place.
He could've dropped tracks #11-17 off this CD and it'd still be worth the price if you ask me. (Instead, I'm picturing some record label exec with his eyes fixed on bottom line sales figures forcing these comparably weak collabos with 50, Trey Songz & Nate Dogg onto an already great album).
I have no doubt Obie Trice is real as hell unlike so many of these packaged, studio rappers. He has strong delivery mixed with fierce rhymes, wit, (some) humor and a sharply entertaining ability to switch up flows on this album.
I can't say anything bad about "Obie Story," "Cry Now," or "Wake Up" -- all solid tracks. But my favorites were as follows:
* "Ballad of Obie Trice" -- a catchy song with a tight flow telling the story of Obie's past street life, featuring a very profound verse I've just kept replaying over & over to appreciate: "The story of Urban Negroes/Created as equals/We wouldn't have to be so eager to mistreat you" ...FYI, he's talking about the police!
* "Kill Me a Mutha" -- a hot street self-defense track with Can-You-Feel-Me-type honesty, featuring another tight line mixed with subtle humor "I got a cause, a clause that I live by/ Keep the heater close because I don't want to die."
* "Snitch" -- a somewhat commercial ode to code of the streets (now) cliche with Akon singing the hook. Great collabo, great rhymes & a great hook.
* "Violent" -- another semiautobiographical I'm-Not-the-One anthem (Think TuPac's famous quote "I'm not a killer, but don't push me").
* "Lay Down" -- a too short but live Stand-Up-Like-a-Man anthem with arguably the best delivery on the album.
As an artist, you'll definitely be impressed by Obie Trice who probably doesn't get the marketing push & notoriety he deserves b/c he's more laid back & doesn't have that "superstar personality" of a Kanye West or 50 Cent.
But in my opinion, he is an above average emcee.
"Second Round's On Me" has some hot tracks & will have me lookin' for his next album.
Recommended.
Not Surprising..........2006-10-02
...That this album is good. I agree that it is probably the best major label release of 2006. I've noticed that almost every album reviewed on Amazon is given 5 stars, which I would think would be reserved for "classic" albums, of which only 20 or so (of the hip hop genre) have ever been released. I give Second Round's On Me 4 because, although not classic, it is an excellent CD. Most recent hip hop releases cannot be listened to all of the way through with out hitting the skip button, or even close. This one almost makes it. Obie Trice is one of the most under rated mainstream MC's, and a vastly under rated lyricist. Production is also top notch. In fact, this is the first CD I've purchased this year that I didn't feel ripped off after buying it. Highly reccomended.
Best Rap Album of 2006, so far.......2006-09-02
This album is serious. Very honest lyrics.. great production.. Obie lyricism on this album is second to none. Certain verses are ran from start to finish, with same rhyme pattern, real Eminemesque, but in Obie's own style. I'd highly recommend this album to any and everyone...
great cd.......2006-08-30
this is definitely one of the top cd's to come out this year if not the best. the cd is strong beginning to end in every way. the beats are incredible and as far as im concerned obie is one of the most underrated rappers out there. his story telling abilities are second to none. i definitely recommend buying this cd. it's one that deserves the couple dollars, and im usually very harsh when it comes to that grading scale. you wont be disappointed.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.
A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05
This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.
