Like a shimmering pearl, The Light in the Piazza emerged from a sea of revivals, rehashings, and movie adaptations to secure 11 2005 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Based on an Elizabeth Spencer novella (which was also made into a 1962 film), it follows a mother, Margaret (Victoria Clark), and her daughter, Clara (Kelli O'Hara), as they take a vacation to Italy. There, Clara and a young Italian (Matthew Morrison) fall in love, but Margaret is determined to keep them apart.

The Light in the Piazza doesn't fit the model of most Broadway scores, with a splashy opener here, a swing number there, then the big ballad. The score is more of a unified whole, sometimes jarring, sometimes following the patterns of speech, and sometimes unfolding in glorious sheens of sound. (Heck, some of it's even in Italian!) In that sense, it's similar to another unconventional American musical set in Italy, Stephen Sondheim's Passion, which is more chamber opera than musical, and composer-lyricist Adam Guettel (song of Mary Rodgers, grandson of Richard Rodgers) seems the most likely heir apparent to Sondheim in the current generation of musical theater creators. O'Hara's voice soars in the score's most beautiful moments ("Say It Somehow," the title song), but Clark enjoys two exquisitely lyrical moments with "Dividing Day" and "Let's Walk." She was one of the show's six Tony winners (for Leading Actress), along with Guettel's score and the orchestrations, scenice design, lighting, and costumes, while O'Hara (for Featured Actress), Morrison, Craig Lucas's book, and Bartlett Sher's direction were also nominated. --David Horiuchi

Album Description

The Light in the Piazza is arguably one of the most highly anticipated theatrical events of the decade for serious Broadway theatergoers. The Los Angeles Times has already declared its creator, Nonesuch artist Adam Guettel, "a composer for the new century," on the strength of his two Off-Broadway productions, the 1996 Obie-Award winning "folk musical" Floyd Collins and the 1998 song cycle, Myths and Hymns, TIME has described him as "a startlingly original songwriter." Few theatrical composers have been watched as closely as Guettel, and few musicals in the course of their development have generated so much substantial press or been praised so highly on the road as The Light in the Piazza. Both the New Yorker and The New York Times magazine devoted in-depth coverage to the evolution of Guettel's sophisticated, deeply moving score. New Yorker critic John Lahr decided,"Guettel's kind of talent cannot be denied. He shouldn't change for Broadway; Broadway, if it is to survive as a creative theatrical force, should change for him."

5 out of 5 stars Will endure long after we are gone..........2007-07-31

My wife, daughters, and I had the good fortune to see this musical shortly before it left Chicago. We love musicals and all agreed that this is one of the best we've seen in many years. Why?
First of all, the story is simple, yet basic to everyone. It's about finding love and embracing it to the greatest extent possible. It's about losing a passion for someone that once existed. Most of all, it's about the simplicity of pure love in a complicated world and how it can break down all barriers to conquer all.
The composers matched characters and emotions perfectly, from Clara's cries from her heart in "The Light in the Piazza" to Fabrizio's love at first site in "Love to Me". How can you not love the beginning lyrics in "Love to Me"? ("The day we meet. The way you lean against the wind, and do not know that you are beautiful.)
Or Margaret's lament in the reprise to "The Beauty Is". The lyric ("If I could, then I would paint it over. I would be there and I wouldn't turn away. If I only had a chance to not turn away... and the beauty is, and the beauty is, the beauty is.")is a statement about everyone's life and the decisions they make and regret.
"Say it Somehow" is one of the most beautiful songs about the fact that love transcends language and cultural barriers.
One reviewer missed the entire point of Clara's tirade scene. Her passion to protect her love is just that, pure passion, not checked by proprieties. It is a reaction that is understood in all languages, a reaction from the heart to someone who is posing as a threat to take her love away from her. We should all be so passionate when our love is threatened.
Thank you Adam Guettel for a show and album that we will enjoy for the rest of our lives. We need more musicals like this one. I am sure that it will endure the test of time. It is a universal story of love coupled with music for the soul.

3 out of 5 stars Snoozeville.......2007-07-23

The only thing more sleep inducing than this cast album is sitting through the actual show. The music is very pretty but too similar and will lull you into a deep coma!

1 out of 5 stars Worst musical I've seen in 5 years.......2007-07-20

As part of the Broadway in Chicago Series, I have seen all of the plays coming through Chicago in recent years. Light in the Piazza was terrible. Who wrote this, and why? The music is forgettable and creates cognitive dissonance. The lyrics are boring.

The scene where the handicapped gal implodes at a dinner party was excruciating to watch. And not in a good way. The play is fractured and confusing.

5 out of 5 stars It's closed in NY, but it opened in Chicago this week!.......2007-07-19

Bravo, "Piazza"! May we all hope that Guettel-Lucas are the Rogers & Hammerstein of a new generation of American music. "Piazza" is not a musical, it is more of a miniature contemporary Mozartian "Magic Flute." The music is brilliant in it's sheer lyricism. Though the plot is thin to the point of absurdity it doesn't matter because the characters grow with each note until "Piazza" blazes forth as a shining star in the current constellation of new and revived Broadway musicals.

For "Piazza" afficiandos there is always hope for musicals as long as "Piazza" continues. This album is a jewel. So many of the songs are incredibly touching. I've sat through New York and Chicago performances and weeped to "Dividing Day" and watched the quiet tears of men and women in the audience. With "Piazza" love in Florence is eternal.

Victoria Clark, (God bless that North Carolina accent) O'Hare and Morrison are the definitive cast. What a collection of voices and actors.

I only hope that everyone who hears "Piazza" has the opportunity to see the performance live somewhere. It's so much more with the lighting and Italian joie de vivre including instructions to turn down your cell phones and pages in Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Simply unique.......2007-07-19

A refreshing change from the usual showtunes that regurgitate the same "sound", i.e melody lines, this is classy and on its own! The performances are nothing short of top notch, Matthew Morrison is fantastic.

This set sheds the spotlight on Harry Connick Jr.'s first two major musical-theater experiences. On disc 1, the cast-album recording of The Pajama Game revival, his role is limited to that of singer. On disc 2, which includes songs from his own Thou Shalt Not, he is composer, pianist, and interpreter. The revival of The Pajama Game is all frothy fun and shows that Connick has what it takes to become a stage leading man. (He still sounds a little stiff at times, as in the spoken part of "Hey There" for instance.) Kelli O'Hara plays his love interest with spunky zest—-appropriate, considering her part has been played by both Janis Paige and Doris Day—-and it's hard to beat great tunes such as the aforementioned "Hey There," "Her Is," "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway," performed here in a jumping eight-minute version. Note that both the show and the recording include three Richard Adler songs not in the original production: "If You Win, You Lose," "The World Around Us" (co-written with Jerry Ross) and "The Three of Us." Thou Shalt Not was an interesting but flawed attempt, but this collection of songs—-some of which were in the show, some of which were cut from it-—works quite well on its own. Backed by his quartet (occasionally augmented by a discreet string section), Connick creates a jazzy, dimly-lit mood, especially on duets with Kelli O'Hara, such as "Can't We Tell" and the sumptuously melancholic "I Like Love More." Even when the pace slightly picks up on the Sinatra-esque "Oh! Ain't That Sweet," the general atmosphere remains classily subdued. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Harry on Broadway.......2006-12-02

I found the music very dull and repetitive. Uninteresting.

The Pajama Game cd is great. Loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Lost in translation.......2006-11-25

I'm a longtime fan of both the Pajama Game and Harry Connick, Jr. (and now Kelly O'Hara). Having seen the show, I can truly say I've never had so much fun at a Broadway musical. However, although this CD is good, it's not great -- in my book, it's not as good as the original cast recording with John Raitt in the Sid Sarokin role. On this CD, something's been lost in the show's translation from live to recorded performance. But if you were lucky enough to have seen the show on Broadway, this recording will transport you back to the palpable chemistry between Kelly and Harry as well as Harry's show-stopping piano improv during Hernando's Hideaway, among other delights.

5 out of 5 stars Harry's Awesome!!!.......2006-10-15

This soundtrack is as good as when I saw it on Broadway! It's Harry and Kelly at their finest! It's a great soundtrack to a good musical.

Many know Georgia Stitt as the vocal coach on the primetime reality series Grease: You're the One That I Want, but she has a thriving "side" business as an arranger, conductor, musical director, pianist and songwriter. It's the latter aspect that gets showcased on this album, in which Stitt's songs are performed by a collection of topnotch Broadway pros. The overall mood is one of thoughtful longing, emphasized by largely acoustic arrangements, mostly by either Stitt or her husband, Jason Robert Brown (The Last 5 Years). While perfectly crafted, the songs quickly blend into each other; their share a certain polite, "beige" elegance that also lacks inner fire. This makes the tracks breaking from that mold stand out even more: Jenn Colella brings a nice twang to the rollicking "Big Wings;" Faith Prince sounds positively delighted on the jaunty "I Get to Show You the Ocean;" and Kelli O'Hara demonstrates why she's one of the finest interpreters on Broadway on the sepia-tinted "Perfect Summer," which sometimes sounds like something cut from a 1940s musical (Stitt herself plays the piano on all three songs). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Description

THIS ORDINARY THURSDAY, the extraordinary debut album of songs by Georgia Stitt, features vocals by some of Broadway's brightest stars, including Sara Ramirez (Tony Award-winner for Spamalot, currently starring on TV's Grey's Anatomy), Faith Prince (Tony Award-winner for Guys and Dolls), Susan Egan (Broadway's original Belle in Beauty and the Beast), Kelli O'Hara (Tony nominee for Pajama Game, opposite Harry Connick), and Matthew Morrison (Tony nominee for Light in the Piazza). Seen by millions each week as the vocal coach on NBC's primetime series, GREASE: You're the One That I Want, Georgia Stitt is known as a composer-lyricist with a style and sensibility all her own. Clever, sophisticated, and memorably melodic, THIS ORDINARY THURSDAY is one debut album not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Georgia Stitt has something to say.......2007-05-15

Georgia Stitt has something to say. She speaks with sincerity through lyrics that notice the details of living and find substance. Her music is equally honest in it varied flavors from artsong ("These Two") to my least favorite--country ("Big Wings") to fun show tune ("I Get to Show you the Ocean") to power ballad ("The Holy Secret" and the stunning "I Lay my Armor Down") to the intimate, more sophisticated than pop, title track. No matter the flavor of the music, the unifying factor is a fresh look at the little gestures of living that unintentionally expose a bit of truth.

5 out of 5 stars One of the brightest new voices in the American theater........2007-05-13

Bravo to the folks at PS Classics for issuing this splendid disc dedicated to songs by this terrefic young writer....you could not ask for better performances.

5 out of 5 stars A Triumph!.......2007-05-13

If you're looking for music from one of the most influential up and coming Broadway writers of our time, with people who actually know what they're doing behind the microphone, then you've found your match with this album!

Through this whirlwind roller coaster ride of emotions, we get to know a little more about Ms. Stitt, and are all the better for it. She's got some of Broadway's brightest stars singing her emotionally wrought lyrics and soulfully moving themes. Between her and her husband, we may be looking at our generation's Comden and Green!

The highlight of this CD, for me, is Faith Prince's rendition of "I Get to Show You the Ocean." If you've any love of Broadway at all, BUY THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2007-04-26

I'm SO glad I bought this CD! Each beautiful song is a mini One Act play, with glorious and surprising melodies, and sophisticated, engaging lyrics. Oh, and the voices! Kelli O'Hara singing "Perfect Summer" is simply gorgeous, and Faith Prince's light-hearted and touching vocal on "I Get To Show You The Ocean" is perfection. Every song is a winner!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars kelli ali is awesome.......2007-01-21

this album is great. the songs have a cool rock sound with some electronic sounds together with kellis very beautiful voice make a very awesome album. this is one of my favorites along with kellis other album Psychic Cat.

5 out of 5 stars A rather exquisite pop album.......2006-06-28

The Sneaker Pimps apparently fired Ms Kelli Ali, and yet, virtually the only thing the Sneaker Pimps had going for them was the sweet voice of Ms Kelli Ali. Their loss and our gain.

I like Tigermouth very much. It is a tasteful and uncomplicated album - full of nice tunes and colourful and rhythmical instrumental music. Kelli Ali's voice is quite high, in the Classical Music world, we would call her a soprano. She has a very smooth and pure voice and a certain sultry aspect to it as well. She delivers her songs in a very natural and naturally "sexy" way, without ever forcing this quality or her voice.

Tigermouth is the sort of album that reminds me of a balmy Summer evening, spent with friends and all my troubles forgotten. I don't just like albums like this one, I actually need this sort of music from time to time (you will see from my other reviews that Tigermouth is very much a "holiday" from the music to which I normally listen).

I look forward to future albums by Ms Kelli Ali and I wish her well in her musical career.

5 out of 5 stars Kelli can sing ..........2006-02-21

... whatever she wants with that voice! And that's something I would only say about Esthero and about Kelli herself.

Ok, for being her debut this CD sounds much different than what we were used to with the Sneaker Pimps, but I think it was great that she decided to move on on her own and a little bit of happy trip-pop doesn't hurt anyone right?

My personal favorites are "Inferno high love" and the hidden track (which reminds me why I loved the Sneaker Pimps in the first place).

4 out of 5 stars sneaker pimp gone pop!.......2004-12-17

This is what sneakers pimps would've sounded like if they would've gone pop with Kelli on their first album.
But that's not a bad thing! This pop formula on this album works. It's not britney pop....it just more Kelli pop.
I have to agree with that other reviewer who mentioned that her vocals at times sound like madonna's.

The 2nd track is the best one methinks.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive trip-pop delight.......2004-10-26

This album is simply chock full of deliriously catchy, sly pop tunes!

In her subtle, shrill coo, Kelli Ali has created a gem of the kind of bouncy coolness that so much of the American music scene lacks...Sadly, wouldn't you know, it's an import.

But after her dismissal from the Sneaker Pimps, it's a great thing she's put her act together so spiffily.

Check out the pulsing disco of "Inferno High Love" and the slow groovy grace of "Queen of The World"...Then dive into her Tigermouth!

5 out of 5 stars kelli ali is awesome.......2007-01-21

these other people that wrote bad reviews for this album are crazy. this album is great. the songs have a cool rock sound with some electronic sounds together with kellis very beautiful voice make a very awesome album. this is one of my favorites along with kellis other album Tigermouth.

1 out of 5 stars Lyrics are juvenille.......2006-12-22

Like most of the other reviewers, I am a fan of Sneaker Pimps and held out hope that Ali's solo album would unleash some new sounds. Unfortunately, it's painfully apparent that most of the creativity may have been as a result of the group's interaction rather than Ali. The lyrics are atrociously juvenile and mundane. Her voice stays within about five keys and never strays, sounding more and more like a strange robotic noise than a human voice. The music itself has possibility, but the lyrics ruin it for anyone looking for something deeper than "SKY'S SO BLUE - SO DON'T BE SAD COS WE LOVE YOU PSYCHIC CAT."

5 out of 5 stars Less mature than Tigermouth, but that's ok....it's more fun!.......2006-12-05

There's bad pop and there's good pop.

Britney is bad pop.

This is good pop.

This is an album that says "I don't care what everyone else is doing, I want to do my own thing and just have a good time making fun kooky music." Tigermouth

seemed to be written from her heart and she took a lot longer to delve into her emotions to write it than she did with Psychic Cat. I read an interview which

said that Tigermouth took a year to make, while Psychic Cat took a month.

Just because the album isn't genre redefining, (she does have her own sound going on though) it doesn't mean that it isn't fun or well done. If I had to

guess, I would say that after the more serious debut, she wanted to kick back and just have fun.

Artists that try to trump their earlier albums typically fail at the attempt, which is why she is such a great artist. She gives what she's in the mood to

give. On the other hand, some artists that try to go in a totally different direction often miss the boat a little (Cathy Dennis' "Am I The Kinda Girl?".)

This album isn't the case, because it works and it works well. I wouldn't try to compare this album to Tigermouth too deeply because of this.

Who knows, maybe next time she'll dazzle us with her angry side with an alternative-ish highly industrial amalgamation :)

Tracks:

1. Hot Lips--Grungy guitar-filled fast pop. Catchy, good opener :) 9/10

2. Psychic Cat--Ambient downtempo that borders on industrial at times 8/10

3. Speakers--a Holly Valance (State Of Mind album)/Lene Nystrom sounding hybrid 8/10

4. Home Honey I'm High--Great stuff. medium-slow dance with a great sound. Depeche mode 80's indust/synth mixed with Kylie Minogue's sexiness 10/10

5. Ideal--Breakbeat with a fun dark sounding melody 7/10

6. In Praise Of Shadows--I would call this one the interlude of the album...slow and moody...This one reeks Tigermouth :) but doesn't really fit well on this album--5/10

7. Graffiti Boy--Best pop melody on the CD, with background synth that compliments the vocals and super-awesomely fun bassline exceptionally. 10/10

8. Groupie--Reminiscent of melodies of the group Lush...doesn't fit with the mood of the rest of the album.--5/10

9. Voyeur--More of the good guitarry almost-grungy pop that she does well. Slower verses with louder slightly explosive chorus..very good--9/10

10. Last Boy On Earth--Would have sounded 100 times better if the slow start progressed into full blown rock...I see her angry side popping out a little bit. Overuse of high sonic frequency percussion without the heavier bassline masked the melody on the chorus. 5/10 :)

The good on this album highly outweighed the bad for me. Give it a whirl...and don't compare it to her first!! :)

2 out of 5 stars Yuck - I am so bummed I special ordered this.......2005-11-09

Let me first say how much I actually like Kelli Ali.

I absolutely loved her with the Sneaker Pimps on the album "Becoming X" - such a great album and such a great vocal performance on her part. I was obsessed with this album for some time after its release, particularly with the songs "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar". I also really enjoyed her first solo project "Tigermouth", more so I think than the typical reviewer of that album. It was a definite departure in sound from what we had grown accustomed to with her voice on "Becoming X", it was more pop and much less of the darker trip-hop I so love, but still a very solid effort I felt.

This CD, however, left me seriously wanting - wanting much, much less of it. To be fair, I have not even heard the entire album all the way through. I have tried to listen to it a couple of times, but after my ears started to bleed, I finally gave up. I was so excited when I got this CD, which I went out of my way to special order from Britain. This only magnified my serious disappointment when I tried to listen to it the next day in my car on my way to work. I just was not feeling her voice, or the music accompanying it. It just felt like a giant step backwards for her.

I pray that any future effort will resurrect the Kelli that I originally fell in love with. I understand an artist needs to grow and not be pinned down to the same old sound, but I just have no idea where this CD was going.

Maybe I will try another time or two to listen to it, because I just can't believe that it went so wrong (for me, anyway), but I don't hold out much hope that my assessment will change.

I hope, for Kelli's sake, that my opinion on this album is the exception and not the rule, but I would definitely advise potential buyers to listen to some samples of the songs before purchase. If I had, I would have just skipped it and wrote it off as a sophomore flunk.

2 out of 5 stars Nice story, disappointing album.......2005-05-09

"Psychic Cat" has a nice story behind it - singer Kelli Ali leaves the Sneaker Pimps, goes on the dole, does soul-searching and travels for a while, eventually recording a solo album. While recording the album, she meets a Santa Monica street performer with a pair of psychic cats - hence, this album's title. Unfortunately, Ali's second solo effort is a bland electro-pop affair, falling somewhere between Avril Lavigne and Depeche Mode. Her voice is largely wasted on prosaic lyrics and safe production that connotes rather than conveys attitude. Pro Tools may make a singer, but it can also break one.

Kelli Williams's talent has come of age with her third release, In the Myx. With a professional singing career that began at age 10, and more than 100 opening performances for CeCe Winans's 1996 tour, Williams has paid her dues. Now she has brought a unique and bold style into the circle of elite gospel talent. In the Myx presents an urban pop landscape in full bloom. The bombastic aggression of "Remyx Me," the exalted groove of "Bustin' Loose," and the balmy gentleness of "Crazy for You" push the boundaries of what one would expect to hear in this genre. Over the top of it all, Williams declares her faith unabashedly. On the title track she sings: "That's where I want to be / Caught up in the myx of your will." Obviously, Williams's adventurous nature has put her right into the middle of it.

5 out of 5 stars Off tha heezy.......2001-06-27

Each time I listen to this I notice something different in it that's tight. You gotta peep it. This is the answer for urban gospel music.

5 out of 5 stars totally jammin'.......2001-03-31

Absolutely loved this cd! The best r&b gospel I've heard so far. All of the cuts are worth listening to and very danceable (for those of us who like to crank it up and get into some seriously physical praise!) On the down side, the raps were superfluous, neither improving nor adding anything to the songs when they were used, and at some times seeming to have little to do with the rest of the lyrics. And upon occasion Ms. Williams' wonderful voice was drowned out by the backgrounds, which were equally excellent but should not have overrun her vocals. Despite that, I'm delighted to listen to the cd over and over again, and look forward to her next one.

5 out of 5 stars She's in the Myx of God's Will!.......2000-10-08

Kelli Williams third album is truly the charm! She was blessed to get the production skills of T-Boy aka Tonex! I love Kelli's whole album, and it's the kind that one can listen to the first song to the last song with pure, spirit-filled listening pleasure. There's something for everyone here. There's innovative futuristic tracks where Tonex's production skills shine that make you want to get up and praise God in dance, and there's beautiful ballads that will sweep you away in spirituality like the title song "In The Myx" and "Temple".

This album is truly a collector's album. If you love good gospel music, then you'll truly love "In The Myx [Of Your Will]". It ministers to the soul while enlightening the mind, and entertaining the senses with pure, good music. This is one quality produced album, and it's something unique and innovative. Kelli is elevating as an artist and musical minister with every album. She's a young lady who has chosen to live her life for God, and you can see the blessings this life gives throughout her album. I love her album. I try to listen to it everyday, and when I do I listen to the first through the last song because the album is truly spiritually complete and well put together. I guarantee you, one listen of Kelli's "In The Myx" album will put you in the myx of God's will! She is sold out for Jesus Christ!

2 out of 5 stars At the Core; Behind the Score.......2000-10-07

I like the music- the production was impeccable. What bothers me is the voice at the center of this "whirlwind of creativity". Ms. Williams oftentimes is loud, and her voice is definitely full, but her presentation lacks inspiration/character. Isn't there a problem when the back up singers sound better than the lead? For this music lover, it's an intollerable imbalance. If you're looking for NoW music with explosive, seamless tracks, lyrics and voices that move you professionaly, you'd do better with other tried artists like Stacie Orrico, Out of Eden, Virtue or Mary, Mary.

Product Description

Brian d’Arcy James, Jason Danieley, Kelli O’Hara, Jessica Molaskey, Victoria Clark, and Jeff McCarthy star in the world premiere recording of Ricky Ian Gordon and Tina Landau’s Dream True, conducted by Ted Sperling. Inspired by George du Maurier’s 1891 novel Peter Ibbetson, Dream True was originally produced by the Vineyard Theatre in June of 1998, then in an extended run in the spring of 1999. It was subsequently performed in concert in March of 2004 at CooperArts, a contemporary music series produced by Howard Stokar; this recording – with its striking cast of Broadway stars and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick – is drawn from that performance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations.......2006-12-22

I bought this disc for several reasons. I've been impressed with some of Ricky Ian Gordon's earlier work, primarily in his musical "My Life With Albertine", and as I huge fan of "The Light in the Piazza" I was excited to hear Kelli O'Hara and Victoria Clark on the same recording . What I didn't expect was such a gorgeous score and talent from the entire cast.

The story deals with two childhood friends who are separated. Though their lives take them on different paths they are able to meet again in their dreams- a technique called "dreaming true". Though it keeps them connect, it also affects all other relationships.

The story spans about fifty years and the music evolves with the changing times. Songs like "God's There" and "He's Gone" are almost arias, while "Have a Nice Day" references the posters popular in the 1970's and "The Best Years of Our Lives" uses a trio to evoke the atmosphere of post WWII America.

This recording features an all-star cast but particular standouts are Brian D'Arcy James and Jason Danieley as Peter and Verne, the grown boys, Kelli O'Hara (stunning on "God's Here" and "Best For You") as Peter's wife, Madge, and Victoria Clark has a brief shining moment in "He's Gone". My only complaint she was underused. But overall this is a great cast in a wonderful score. Thank goodness we have PS Classics introducing these hidden gems to the world!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Judy.......2006-08-14

This work would deserve the 5th star, but for one hugely disappointing ommission. Where's Judy Kuhn?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful score.......2006-07-22

Thanks to the good folks at PS Classics we now have a superb recording of this marvelous work. The cast could not be better. Ricky Ian Gordon is one of the finest compositional voices in current musical theater. Tina Landau's lyrics are elegant and moving.

Jule Styne in Hollywood gathers 20 different vocalists to perform 21 songs that Styne wrote for the movies before he moved on to Broadway fame. That means no Gypsy or Bells Are Ringing here, but there are many familiar standards such as "Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night of the Week," "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," "Three Coins in the Fountain," and "Time After Time" (you'll notice a Frank Sinatra theme, as Ol' Blue Eyes loved Styne's work with Sammy Cahn, who wrote the majority of the lyrics represented). And the unfamiliar fare sounds great when sung by some of Broadway's best and brightest, including Light in the Piazza costars Kelli O'Hara and Victoria Clark, Audra McDonald, Sutton Foster, Rebecca Luker, Brent Barrett, and married duo Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley. (Veteran Leslie Uggams's heavy vibrato among these golden voices takes some adjusting to.) Also noteworthy is the presence of Sara Zahn, whose outstanding 2001 album Songs of Carolyn Leigh proved she's perfect for this sort of material. Another excellent effort by PS Classics' nonprofit archival wing dedicated to the preservation of American song. --David Horiuchi

Album Description

Jule Styne is best remembered as the composer of such Broadway classics as Gypsy and Funny Girl, but before that, he was one of Hollywood's most successful songwriters, with an amazing string of hits that garnered ten Academy Award nominations. Jule Styne in Hollywood brings together some of the best artists from Broadway, cabaret and jazz in all-new recordings of Styne's greatest film songs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed..........2006-11-19

As a major Broadway fan, I didn't hesitate to purchase this album mostly because of its excellent vocal talent. With selections featuring some of my favorite Broadway stars such as Sutton Foster, Audra McDonald, and Kelli O'Hara, I expected this to be a powerhouse album just oozing with ear candy.

This wasn't exactly the case. Though the songs are well done and the singers are up to par, it just didn't keep my interest. There are only about 3 songs that I liked overall, and "10,432 Sheep" is the only song I would recommend to others. I personally pay attention to anything Sutton Foster records, therefore I don't consider the purchase a total loss. The numbers themselves just didn't seem to be anything special. For it's price, I expected more.

All in all it is a very good compilation, a worthy addition to any Broadway buff's collection. But unless you just love the music of Jule Styne...it may come off to be a bit boring. Maybe it's meant for a more mature audience who can appreciate it. If you're thinking of getting it for your teenage daughter for Christmas or something, you might want to pass.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best release from PS Classics ever.......2006-08-20

Before the Broadway Jule Styne (think Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Bells are Ringing, Gypsy among his most sucessful shows),he toiled in Hollywood for years during the late 30's and 40's. Some of his classic movie songs are well known such as I Don't Want to Walk without You and I'll Walk Alone. Others are not so well known. When I was plowing through the 6 disc Sinatra in Hollywood set, I was amazed at the vitality of the songs Jule Styne wrote for Sinatra. As the Amazon reviewer said, Sinatra and Styne were a match made in heaven. But how is this recording and will you like it? Wonderful and Yes you absolutely will!! Kelli O'Hara leads off with a lovely whistful song called Blame My Absent Minded Heart which is lovely. Unfortunately it is followed by Audra McDonald and an unfamiliar number from West Point Story called 10437 Sheep. Once you have heard it, everything else is forgotten. Teriffic performance of a teriffic song. Other highlights include Sutton Foster singing There's Nothing Rougher than Love, Philip Chaffin singing Come Out, Come Out, Wherever you are (with a sly little wink in his voice--Sinatra sang it in Step Lively but this is at least as good probably better), Klea Blackhurst with That Ain't Hay (That's the U.S.A.), Brent Barrett weighing in with the classic Time After Time and jeff Harnar's Money Burns a Hole in My Pocket. Any of the tracks that I have not mentioned would be standouts if only the tracks mentioned weren't so unbelievably wonderful. This CD should be rated with 8 stars!! One of the best CDs I have purchased in a long time, and I purchase a lot. BUY IT!!
