"Very well, Mr. Pitt--Show them how to lower those colors!".......2007-08-01
THE SEA HAWK is presented on (or, rather, explodes from) CD 1 and the first half of CD 2--over 114 minutes in all. What we have here is the globally-acknowledged, consensus-based greatest film swashbuckler (or, to use Erich Wolfgang Korngold's term, "schwanzbuchler") score of the first half of the 20th Century. And, possibly, all of the last century plus--so far--the 21st Century. THE SEA HAWK is Korngold's most famous and greatest film symphony. A case could easily be made (Oscar or no Oscar award) that it is his finest New World composition period! This unparalleled music is also a major reason (if not THE reason) why Korngold's name lives on as one of the most accomplished (but vastly under rated and unappreciated) composer of our time. It has provided (and remains) the portal or spring board for many to discover his contagious and addictive catalog of compositions. THE SEA HAWK is Korngold's fourth (or third, since THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX [1939] is more talk than action) and, lamentably, final swashbuckler score.
The film was directed with "firm control" (to put it mildly) by no-nonsense Michael Curtiz. Likewise, the performance of the complete score in this remarkable recording is, indeed, conducted with firm control by Maestro Stromberg. Even casual listening quickly reveals the presence of orchestral voices never heard in previous recording (both original and re-recorded) plus the dark-panel richness of a superb and balanced performance (as well as sumptuous sound capture)--the audio equivalent of a rare Merlot. The impact is even more startling with studio monitors or similar high-end audio equipment. And any sound system will testify to the spot-on tempos and intra-thematic tempo changes that, up until now, only Korngold himself could pull off. Part of this pure pleasure is due to the larger orchestra demanded by the original score and provided in this recording compared to the smaller ensembles utilized for the concert suite and score fragments presented in previous modern recordings. Then there is the huge restoration and re-orchestration infrastructure that supports this peerless performance with John Morgan at the helm.
Once again Stromberg provides expansive evidence that he is clearly Korngold's modern-day conducting equal! Similarly, Restoration Magician Morgan demonstrates once again that he is well up to the combined skills of orchestrators such as Hugo Friedhofer, Milan Roder, Ray Heindorf, and Simon Bucharoff who formed Korngold's support group for THE SEA HAWK.
Typical of a Morgan and Stromberg undertaking, even the score for the theatrical trailer (CD 2, Track 10) is included. But this is no "ordinary" trailer music. Korngold's score for the original preview contains new variations on themes from the film's score and is presented in three parts (the trailer itself has long since vaporized). Previews for later re-releases of THE SEA HAWK (which are still around) use pieces of music from this original three parter.
DECEPTION (on CD 2) is one of Korngold's shorter film scores--it easily fits fully restored along with music from the original theatrical trailer on half a CD. This is because the film deals with the triangular trials and tribulations of those who happen to be in the classical-music business, and, naturally, Korngold included a hefty dose of music from a number of classical composers. His own score is scattered throughout the film, but as presented in this composite recording, you'd never know it. Talk about tonality!
Conducting and orchestral performance are once again top drawer in this remarkable recording. Maestro Stromberg has applied (as usual) the necessary orchestral discipline to successfully rekindle the raw energy that rendered Korngold's sound-track recordings without equal in their day (and still today in modern recordings by other conductors, although Charles Gerhardt comes close). Sound capture and mixing is first rate except for the opening moments of the Main Title (CD 2, Track 11) where individual instrument voices are a bit stream rollered by the orchestra at large. The restored Original Theatrical Trailer (CD 2, Track 24), courtesy of Mr. Morgan, makes one's ears pop with anticipation when contemplating the possibility of it being performed (sans any concretized "extension") in live performances.
The CD booklet is strictly an A-Team production. Mr. Rudy Behlmer, the de facto reigning Dean of "Golden-Age" Film Historians, probably knows more about Warner Bros. than Albert, Harry, Jack, and Sam ever did. In this extensive booklet, Behlmer expands upon his recent on-camera video-disc commentaries and hard-copy publications to provide a detailed (make that definitive) account of all matters regarding THE SEA HAWK, and, to a somewhat lesser extent, DECEPTION. This is a read you simply can't put down until done--the modern hallmark of an accomplished historian. Restoration and re-orchestration Master John Morgan offers an insider's view of the sheer enormity of time and resources (not to mention dedication and perspicacity) required to fully restore both film scores (see Q&A Sidebar for more). He also explains why it is physically impossible for the original score from THE SEA HAWK to be performed in a live concert setting as it was presented in the film and in this recording. Mr. Brendan Carroll, Korngold's definitive biographer, weighs in with essentially a note-by-note examination of both scores plus some fascinating new background information not included in his extensive Korngold biography (Note 2). Carroll possesses the innate ability to jump back and forth from the macro to the micro in analyzing musical compositions. Here he does it yet again!
DECEPTION, sadly, was Korngold's farewell to film symphonies. Korngold was offered several subsequent (and notable) films, but turned all of them down except one--MAGIC FIRE (1955). This is a film biography of composer Richard Wagner. Korngold was hired not to compose, but to edit, arrange, conduct, and supervise the scoring of Wagner's music. "I'll do it ... (but) only to protect Wagner" he remarked going in. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough. The film was DOA (dead on arrival) and remained so even after (or as a result of) numerous re-edits.
And so, Korngold ended his film-music career as he had begun it some 20 odd years earlier by massaging and conducting the music of another. His first "break-through" film was A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (1935) where he reprocessed and conducted Felix Mendelssohn's music. Ironic (or intentional?) bookends.
A Fine But Not Perfect Version of Korngold's "Sea Hawk".......2007-07-31
First, foremost, and above all else this recording represents a fine effort to reconstruct and present one of the finest film scores of all time, what critical remarks emerge are secondary to the masterful achievement of conductor William Stromberg, restorer John Morgan, and of course the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. That said we turn to this rendition of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's wonderful music for The Sea Hawk. Coming on the heels of Korngold's other great period pieces (The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood, The Prince and the Pauper, and Elizabeth and Essex) it would be quite a statement to say that his music for The Sea Hawk might have been the best of all. But especially when one has the chance to listen to this recording of just about every note written for this film this claim holds up fairly well. It is interesting that this recording comes just after the release of the latest chapter in the modern swashbuckler series Pirates of the Caribbean (At World's End) with a very good score by Hans Zimmer which holds up quite well to the best of Korngold's work. But with The Sea Hawk we clearly have music for the swashbuckler at its zenith, and here we can finally settle in and appreciate the full body of this musical treasure. The main theme for Captain Thorpe and the Sea Hawks, as well as the brilliant call for the Albatross will never be equaled, and they still send goose bumps up the spine in this recording. And do not underestimate the music for Queen Elizabeth which still stands alone in regal tone, or the themes for Dona Maria and the sea itself both touching and moving. And there is an unexpected surprise: a brief theme and motif more or less lost until now. Stromberg and Morgan have literally resurrected Korngold's original music for the original trailer long lost to us. But here it is and a rare treat it is. There are a few problems here, but only purists would notice most of them. Like the Naxos/Stromberg/Morgan recording of Korngold's The Adventures of Robin Hood it seems that at moments the tempo is just a bit off. Of course that may be due to what we are used to from other recordings, but having just watched the film again there is room for some issue here. And while the vocals are good it is all too clear that Irina Romishevskaya is not an Englishwoman, as Alan Hale might put it, and that the chorus is not as clear as we might have wanted. There is much less to take issue with in Deception, largely because most of us are not as familiar with this piece which seems right on in this production. But though less familiar, this music is nonetheless outstanding. Nicely packaged by Naxos with outstanding production values.

There have been so many great recordings of all of the important masterpieces that critics and listeners are often justified in thinking that there's no point in recording them yet again. Then along comes a recording like this one, which revives one's faith in the future of classical music. Gil Shaham is competing with classic performances by Isaac Stern in the Barber, and Jascha Heifetz in the Korngold. And he's as good as either of them, not to mention far more impressively recorded. In particular, the Korngold Concerto--a masterpiece just now coming into its own--has never sounded so resplendent. What a great disc! --David Hurwitz

Fan of Classical String Music.......2007-07-22
Since I am somewhat clumsy and rather slow with this computer, I was delighted to:
1- Find on Amazon Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto.
2-The price was ok.
3- To place an order for the CD and it was delivered within 5 days.
4-Note that no local retail outlets sell classical music. I would burn several gallons of gasoline to find a store. Probably if I got there, the CD would not be available.
5-The quality of Gil Shaham's treatment on the violin of Barber's concerto was first class.
6-I recommend this disc. I make no claim to being a music critic.
great performance, substandard recording.......2006-10-15
While I would agree with the other reviewers that this performance is excellent, there are definitely some issues with it. Let me preface this with that I am a classical sound engineer, and have much experience with this repertoire in the recording environment.
To begin, there are some real dynamics problems with this recording. Its as if the orchestra was recorded using overzealous compression while the soloist was placed front and center with artificially exaggerated levels. I am sure the other reviewers would have to admit that Mr. Shaham was placed way to forward in this recording. His violin sounds enormous!
Second, and this is very curious considering this was a studio recording, Mr Shaham's violin begins to go out of tune in the second movement. It is only the lower strings, but it is very evident to my ears-this resolves itself as the music climbs higher, but I am shocked that no one stopped the recording session to address this.
I will say that the performance is excellent, particularly the conducting, as the dynamics in the score, especially at the end of the second movement, are very well articulated by Mr. Previn. While Mr. Shaham is excellent, I feel the emotions of this piece, for whatever reason, are better served by a female player. I have seen Hilary Hahn perform this piece live, and I believe she understands the intentions of Barber to the letter.
All in all, a very good effort by the performers, a seriously questionable effort by the recording company and especially those overseeing this recording session.
One Of Gil Shaham's Best Concerti Recordings.......2004-02-15
Without question this is one of Gil Shaham's best recordings of violin concerti. Historically it may be the most important since he makes a very persuasive case for including Korngold's violin concerto as part of the standard repertoire of stellar solo violinists of which he is unquestionably one. Both violin concerti are among the most lyrical ever composed, and Shaham brings both immaculate technical skills and soulful, graceful playing in his highly commendable performances of both work. Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra in superb performances of the orchestral scores. However, the real treasure on this recording has to be Previn's duet with Shaham in the Korngold score that concludes this CD. It's some of the most inspirational playing of 20th Century music by a violinist and pianist I have heard. The sound quality is absolutely first rate.
Excellent music.....Excellent performance............2003-12-28
This is the third cd that I had a chance to feel Barber's sentimental music...First was the Adagio for Strings..second was the songs of Barber and the last one the violin concerto...the cd that follows the other always made my love stronger for the Barber's music...But this violin concerto has a different place in my heart...it is a modern era music but you feel it like you are listening a late romantic era composer's music...the work is based on Lyricism and virtuosity...music is wonderful especially in the second movement...and I offer you to listen carefully the 1st movement's 3rd minute's 31st second...a bow pulled with a lot of sentiment...he is not pulling it with his hand...he is doing it with his heart...Gil Shaham is a very talented young violinist...technique is perfect...he plays so clean...no dirty notes heard...and his feeling adds more to his perfect performing...There is not too much to say about the orchestra and the conductor...I think you know about them...If you don't??? meet them in this performance...
even if you are not a fan of Barber or you are not into his music this Cd is highly reccomended...

Barber/Korngold - Shaham/Previn, REALLY GOOD!.......2003-09-05
Yes, FIVE-STARS but I warmed up to this album slowly. I knew I liked SOME of Barber's music but I had to listen to the violin concerto several times before I really heard it. THEN, I realized it is such a wonderful work, played uncommonly well. The Korngold concerto is VERY inventive, as well. However, the work that just KNOCKED ME OVER was the "Much Ado About Nothing" suite by Korngold. The combination of some of the loveliest composing EVER with Previn's dead-on accompanying and Shaham's uncanny genius was SOOOOO satisfying. You won't EVER hear anything more lovely than that "In the Garden" section. Because of the composers but also because of the musicians, I think a music-lover would LOVE and even ADORE this CD!

Euro power metal from... the USA !.......2007-06-09
Rumour has it that it all started in 2005 when Cellador opened a show for The Black Dahlia Murder and managed to give them their demo which eventually landed in the office of Metal Blade, and from then on it all happened very quickly. However, what's more interesting is that all these years I've been listening to US metal bands I haven't come across one single group that successfully carries on in the Euro power metal style until now. Cellador is arguably the first and only American band that plays a distinct power metal style without delving into thrash-based rhythms and throaty vocal lines.
Consisting of eight tracks, the album packs unbridled speed, driven by ultra-fast double bass drums, grooving twin guitars, and searing, high-register vocals by Michael Gremio. This guy sounds so uncannily like Kiske in his heyday or Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen when he decides to tear the stratosphere with his maniacal screams, it's totally unbelievable. The energetic, fists-in-the-air opener "Leaving All Behind" kicks the album off in grand fashion, carried by pumping rhythms and crushing twin guitar harmonies while "A Sign Far Beyond", arguably the best cut on the album, drives their music into the more aggressive territory of power metal, perfected by mid-90's Gamma Ray. Cellador's songs boast irresistible choruses, as on "Forever Unbound" and the epic "Seen Through Time", both graced by the genre's hallmarks. The tasty guitar opening of "Wakening" belies that this song was actually released in 2006 as opposed to 1987 when Helloween-style power metal was taking the entire metal community by storm. Lyrically, unlike most Euro power metallers, Cellador focuses on more personal issues rather than fantasy-based themes or tales of knights and epic battles.
That said, Euro power metal genre is a pretty limited genre to expand on. Over the past two decades, everything has been done by countless bands, so it would be wrong to claim Cellador is by any stretch of the word doing anything remotely original or unheard of. However, judging by the songs on this disc, originality must be the band's last concern; they seem more interested in having fun while playing the music they enjoy. And in that, they are more than successful.
They've made a great start. Let's see what happens when they put out their sophomore album. Check Cellador out if you're into bands like Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica -- or pretty much any other Euro power metal act.
Nebraska? Debut? I can't believe this.......2007-02-15
This debut from Nebraskan Power Metal group, Cellador is mind blowing. From the guitar intro of 'Leaving All Behind' to the 7 minute epic 'Seen Through Time' all the way to the last solo of 'No Chances Lost' this is a really epic piece of work. I can't imagine some band from the middle of nowhere( sorry for people who live there), can create such power metal with european influences clearly embedded in their music. It's just shocking. Honestly, i picked up this CD by chance. I listened to half of 'never again' on the radio, and i was very impressed by their musicianship. I bought the cheap cd and put it in my cd player and i was just.... i think you get the idea. Buy the CD if you like Iron Maiden, All That Remains, Dragonforce, Kamelot, Iced Earth and etc.
Good solid performance.......2006-08-20
First off, a little disclosure is needed. I've seen Cellador at a show here in Virginia just a couple weeks ago, and have become very good friends with these guys. Lets put it this way - they actually invited me to party with them after the show in their hotel room (where I spent the next 3 hours and I have pictures to prove it!). I also bought my copy of this album directly from them (sorry Amazon) and got the whole band to sign it. Just purely from a personal point of view, before I even get into the music, these guys are very cool to just chat with and get to hang out with. As a result of that experience, Cellador has a special place in my heart and I hope I get to see these guys again in the very near future. Thanks Chris, Mike, and all for an awesome time I had with you Tuesday night/Wednesday morning August 8th/9th at Jaxx in Springfield, Virginia! Sorry I had to bail out on you guys on the IHop run, as I needed to get home and to bed before work that morning! I hope you made it safely to Hartford, Conneticut for your next show (by now, I assume you did)!
Now, with that all out of the way, I find this album to be an excellent and very solid performance by a talented young group of musicians here (the drummer is only friggan 17 years old as of this writing!). I've heard the gripes about the vocals, but I honostly think Mike sounds quite good here (and he does at the live performances as well, but I digress as this is supposed to be a review of this particular album). I imagine he'll get even better with more experience. There are some excellent guitar work here as well. The three guitarist (two guitars and bass) really do play off of each other very well and seems to never get in each other's way. Young David (like I said above, only 17 years old), really does a solid job taking up the percussion duties. I sure was impressed when hearing it here on this album, as well as seeing him play at the show as well. To barrow a line from one of my friends, there is something "honost" about the music here. There are no "hidden" keyboardist, no "synth loops" or anything like that. This is just 5 guys that are having a good time, up here just jamming out some really cool music.
The only real down side (and why I did not give this a perfect 5 out of 5 stars - wish I could give 1/2 stars, as I think this is better than 4 stars, but not quite 5 stars) is that the music does sound somewhat derivative at times of similiar bands of this style, most notably DragonForce (who I also saw live and got to hang out with at length as well). For example the track "No Chances Lost", sounds like something right off a DragonForce album, to the point where when I first heard it, I thought it was a DragonForce cover. Also, the guitar work may not be "as technical" as that of DragonForce and others, but then again, I think that'll come with experience. I just got done listening to this back-to-back with DragonForce's Valley of the Damned, and I can definitly tell a difference in play ability and experience. But still, these guys are good at what they are doing here, and there is no denying that. They will only get better if they can keep this up.
One interesting aspect that I got after talking at length with Chris, the lead guistarist, is the issue of a keyboardist. It seems there is a bit of disagreement within the band about wether to add a keyboardist or not. One side thinks it'll add a more melodic or symphonic feel to the music, whereas the other side thinks it'll "cheese out" the music to much. Personally, I tend lean towards "pro-keyboardist" side here, as I think, if done correctly, can add to the music - but the key here is "done correctly". May be in the future, they will add a keyboardist. Will be interesting how that would work out. But anyway - I digress....
To sum up - this is a very good, solid performance by an up-and-coming band, and an excellent debut. If they can continue, I think we'll all be seeing some really good stuff coming from these guys in the future. I sure hope so, and already looking forward to a second album. If you are a fan of this type of music (and perhaps a good way to introduce somebody that may not be), this album is definitly recommended.
Nebraska + European Power Metal, Who would have imagined.......2006-08-18
This is an excellent album, you must go get this if you are a fan of Helloween, Dragonforce, Jag Panzer, Iced Earth. The vocals are very Kiske/Deris Helloween influence, more to the Kiske. The musicianship is tight. Being out of Omaha, but members from Russia, Nebraska, and Brazil, there is worldly influence with a midwest work ethic. This album just blisters through its 8 tracks. Leaving All Behind was the demo ep which got this band signed to metal blade, and with good reason, it just rocks. Other good tracks are Forever Unbound and Releasing the Shadow. This is "Keepers" level music. Get this album, you will not be dissapointed.
I have been in Omaha for 2 years now, and I am shocked I have not heard of these guys until now. They just do not play this stuff on the radio around here enough. We have a great local scene, just need more rock stations. I'm glad the world has a chance to get this album now.
Awesome Debut........2006-08-14
I am very much into power metal (Helloween, Viper, Jag Panzer, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, etc.) So, i gave this album a chance and i thought it was the best album so far this year. This thought still remains. The musicianship is amazing and so is the singing. I don't see what some people are tallking about how the singer is bringing the group down. I think he's good. Some of the best tracks are Wakening and Releasing the Shadow. I strongly suggest that you go out and get this CD. I cannot wait to see what this band will do with their sophomore effort.

Heathen is one of the best thrash bands to have come out of the Bay area scene. These guys are so underated that its criminal. Exceptional talent through all of the songs, ripping solos and devistating riffs. The singer has one of the best, clean voices (not growling) in the genra. And if you like the high pitched screem thing then that tops it off. These guys be puttin shti like Metallica to shame. A true thrash fan needs this, and if the price has kept you from getting it, every penny would be worth it since this is priceless.

short and sweet suites.......2007-05-18
out of the many rca/charles gerhardt recordings of classic film scores, this is probably the shortest. but that does not mean it's weak or lacking in quality.
in fact, it is a much stronger set of kormgold's melodies than 'the sea hawk' because korngold didn't write much for films. when he did, the efforts were towering. sometimes, as in the case of 'another dawn' or 'of human bondage', then overpowered the film altogether.
when you hear the suite for 'bondage', this remark will make perfectly good sense. there is no sense of a film about a young medical student lost in an obsessive love for a tawdry waitress. there is just melodious euro-stuffs, arranged and performed to perfection.
korngold's style suited 'elizabeth and essex' and 'the sea wolf'. for 'elizabeth', the quasi=operatic style is totally appropriate to the romance and intrigue of the court of elizabeth i and for 'wolf', he actually tones it down a bit and creates melancholy, haunting music for the love scenes between the characters played by john garfield and ida lupino.
and best of all, he gives a preview of his gift for composing orchestral pieces with the 'hollenius concerto', a one-movement piece for cello and orchestra that is built partly from a theme from 'elizabeth'. it's beautiful. and it's the on'y recording of the piece so it's a treasure and a weighty addition to your film music collecgtion if you can find it.
Excellent record of Korngold's film music.......2006-05-16
This album contains musical suites from seven of Korngold's film scores: Elizabeth & Essex, the Prince & the Pauper, Anthony Adverse, Sea Wolf, Deception, Another Dawn, and Of Human Bondage. All exceptionally performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Charles Gerhardt. While the diehard Korngold fan will definately want to explore the complete scores of these films, this disc along with "The Sea Hawk" provides a good overview of some of the finest music ever written for the screen.

Album Description
In 1988 Philip Glass scored Errol Morris' extraordinary documentary film entitled "The Thin Blue Line". This film helped exonerate a man named Randall Adams who was serving a life sentence for the murder of a police officer that he didn't commit. It was also responsible for exposing the actual murderer. Mr. Morris' repetitive, obsessive storytelling style is perfectly supported by Philip Glass' hypnotic score and the overall effect is so engaging and irresistible, that it is impossible not to be drawn into this true-life drama.
That same year Nonesuch Records released a CD of the film's soundtrack that interestingly included the narration and interviews from the film and it tells the entire story. In continuing with Orange Mountain Music's mission to expose prime material from the Philip Glass archive of recordings, we have decided to release the original score without the voice-over so it can be experienced thoroughly. We have also included the extra material that was written and recorded for the film but was never used.
The Munkasci/Riesman team produced the original recordings and the ensemble includes strings, flutes, trumpets, French horns and percussion. The music is dark and moody, full of tension appropriately for such a chilling film. You can expect to be captivated by this masterful score.
Album Description
Orange Mountain Music reissue of the acclaimed composer's masterful score to the 1988 film (minus the voice-over that appears on the Nonesuch edition). Also includes extra material that was written & recorded for the film but was never used.
Customer Reviews:
THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack with music only is a quest fulfilled!.......2006-10-27
Finally, THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack by Philip Glass has been released with the beautiful music only (i.e. without the dialogue tracks). Those of you who have seen this gripping documentary by Errol Morris and enjoyed Philip Glass's hypnotic compositions probably bought the original CD release which included dialogue excerpts from the movie. You were probably disappointed because, although the dialogue version sends an important message about the ever-present risk of gross miscarriage of justice and the potential to send innocent men to death row, you were nonetheless deprived of enjoying this incredible, soul-stirring music. This is truly one of Philip Glass's best soundtracks along with KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI.
Now is your chance to buy this musical masterpiece without the distraction of dialogue. If you are like me, you might have yearned for a music-only release for years and years. Finally, your quest can be fulfilled!
P.S. To the "geniuses" in the soundtrack music industry,
Please do us all a huge favour by sparing us from any more soundtrack releases that have dialogue superimposed over the music (CASABLANCA, BLADE RUNNER, MORE MUSIC FROM TITANIC, MORE MUSIC FROM GLADIATOR, etc.)! If we wanted to hear the dialogue, we would either just watch the movie or burn a copy of the dialogue onto a CD by ourselves. So do us all a favour and open those music vaults to release complete soundtracks in their entirety without cheating with dialogue tracks! Thank you.
THANK GOODNESS--the music w/o the words.......2006-07-09
I was enthralled by the soundrack of "The Thin Blue Line." The movie was also interesting, but the music was memorable. There was something so captivating about the track itself wihtout regards to the content. Usually I associate a soundtrack with the images of the movie. (Like in Nothing But Trouble, I always see the scene with Chevy Chase going down the conveyor belt when I hear Bone Crusher.)
I eagerly went out and purchased the soundtrack to the movie, and was quite disappointed because it was the movie w/o the picture. All the dialog was on the disc (WHY????) So thank goodness someone reworked the score using a symphonic orchestra. They were very close to the original, but some of the instrument choices were a bit "generic," that's why I could only give it 4 stars. A verbatim track from the movie w/o any dialog as a TOTALLY original Philip Glass score would be a 5 star deal, all the way.
PS--w/o means "without." Sorry for the shorthand.
Worth buying as complement to the old CD issue.......2005-10-15
I own a copy of the old CD issue (including film monologs), but was pleasantly surprised by the release of this re-issue. This release strips the spoken word from the soundtrack to reveal the true beauty of the music. The effect is remarkable! Of course, this is also partly due to the vastly improved sound quality of the recording. As an added bonus, there're also tracks included that didn't make it to the final soundtrack of the film (and therefore were not included on the previous CD). This release complements the old one in various ways and makes it very worthwhile.
Off the Beaten Path!!.......2004-01-19
As with most of Philip Glass's soundtrack's the music to The Thin Blue Line is amazing (in a suprisingly subtle way). So why in the world was this soundtrack released in 1989 with DIALOGUE ON TOP OF IT?! What's more, to the dismay of all of us diehards', the dialogue was quite out front, with the music off in the background. What were they thinking?
Well, I can't complain anymore - and I'll gladly stop. This soundtrack - without any dialogue, thank you - is available for our enjoyment and it has been making regular rounds on my CD player ever since. For those whove not heard the soundtrack before, but have some familiarity with Glass, this music probably sounds most (loosely) akin to "Dancepieces". The instrumentation is sparse, the pieces are inventive while maintaining an openness and accessibility, and the chord changes have a tendency to give you chills (well, they do to me anyway).
There are plenty of highlights: really the first five tracks are all brilliant (the third being rearranged as Glass's solo piano piece 'metamorphisis 1'). I also really liked tracks 9, 10 and 11 (which are all extremely short peices exploiting the same chordal theme). Also, track 19 (a longer peice for strings that I don't think made it into the film or the other soundtrack) has a calm but mighty sound that I've only heard Glass be able to pull off.
There are, to be sure, a few...well...bizarre tracks that almost sound more like a Michael Nyman experiment than something Glass would do. Two tracks use jazz brushes on a snare, playing a soft swing underneath strings that are playing in straight syncopation. A mismatch, in my opinion. Another two tracks (one of them track 20 - the 'hidden' track) use a surf-sounding guitar and a peppy - almost poppy - feel akin to Michael Nyman. Besides that, track 20 uses more studio effects than I've ever heard Philip Glass use. Very bizarre indeed (but you may well like it, and at any rate, it is very different)!!
Long and short, this album is a gem, even if some of the tracks are a bit eclectic. Glass is to be commended for creating a soundtrack that is a.) this compelling, b.) this diverse from track to track, and c.) simply put, this beautiful!
Very Haunting Film and Score.......2003-11-25
Several years ago I watched the film The Thin Blue Line. The film is stylistically terrific, haunting, and twisted. I loved it AND the music. I wanted the soundtrack, but it included the dialogue from the film (I nevertheless bought the soundtrack). Now Orange Mountain Music has released the soundtrack without the dialogue. Once again, Glass has created a masterful score. The music is appropriate as a filmscore, or it can stand on its own. The music is haunting, wonderful, beautiful. I can't praise this album enough. Buy this one!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful assortment of songs set on Western texts........2000-07-24
This is a wonderful assortment of songs set on Western poetic texts by a whole variety of Russian composers (13 in all), most of whom are familiar (or famous) while others are rather little known (like Alexandrov & Bortnyansky). Much of the songs on this CD, namely of Rubinstein, Taneyev, Glazunov, Grechaninov, & Medtner are set to Germanic poetry (naturally for Rubinstein & Medtner, since they had German ancestry). The song "Gefunden", after Goethe's "Ich ging im Walde" was set to music by Medtner & Taneyev & it's interesting to see their different treatment to it: Taneyev's with the delicacy & innocence, Medtner's the more serious & piquant yet dignified. Glazunov's Romance, after Goethe's "Dichterliebe" is beautiful & ultimately sentamental while Grechaninov's "Widmung" is sincere & somewhat mournful & agitated, especially in the latter part of the text "Oh, may all you sighs & tears, Fly away to her as songs." The selections of Rubinstein's ten songs to German, French, and Italian texts op. 83 (1868) as well as Waldeinsamkeit (from Six German Songs op. 76) are memorable although Glinka was more at home with Italian texts than Rubinstein.
The other songs are set to French text (though Borodin's "Fleurs d' amour" is a french translation to Heine's "Buch der Lieder") while Glinka's "Pur nel sonno" & "Piangendo ancora rinascer suole" are set to Italian. Glinka's songs are especially fresh & lively while Dargomyzhsky's songs are serene, especially "Dieu, qui sourit" & Romance du beau Tirsis (among my particular favorites). The songs of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Bortnyansky, Borodin, & Alexandrov are especially lighthearted & warm. Rachmaninov's "C'etait en avril" has the beauty & the nobleness to be found in his later scores while Tchaikovsky's Rondel has that Mozartian innocence & charm that's immediately compelling. His Deception is more serious & saddened, however, as one looks for his beloved (does this remind you of his Manfred Symphony?).
This is an excellent recital, sang by Sergei Larin (tenor) accompanied by pianist Eleonora Bekova. The warmth & joy of Larin's singing immediately captured by mind, and ultimately my heart as I continue to listen to this CD. Bekova's piano accompliment is wholly euphonious & humane throughout. I eagerly await Volume II.
