A Shot of Rhythm & Blues
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Precious few 1950s R&B vocalists wielded the influence of Clyde McPhatter, his melismatically charged delivery altered the entire future of the idiom, both as lead singer of the Drifters and later on his own. But until now, his 1965-1967 output for Amy Records has been totally overlooked. Sundazed rectifies that injustice by gathering all 10 of Clyde's Amy tracks, including 4 recorded in Muscle Shoals, and 4 bonus tracks - 'Everybody Loves A Good Time' (alt take), 'Little Bit Of Sunshine' (alt. take), I Dreamt I Died' (alt. take) & 'Lonely People Can't Afford To Cry' (alt. take). Two 5-star albums, re-released as one.......2007-01-11
The scene: Oakland, 1970. Eighth grade, woodshop. Our substitute teacher confessed at the beginning of class that he knew nothing about wood or tools. Did we know what we were doing enough to continue on with our projects? Okay, then. He'd brought his record player, he'd be DJ. Toward the end of class he wound up playing a few tracks from Cold Shot, and those of us who'd been paying attention enthused: this was real feeling! Well, teacher said, stay after when the bell rings. There's a track I can't play for the class. I still remember Fabius Jones' grin to me in that moment.
The bell rang, we stayed. Needle dropped on vinyl. "The Signifyin Monkey told the Lion one day, there's a bad motherf***er comin down yo' way..." Goodness! I went out that weekend and bought the album.
Shuggie Otis, Johnny's son, got a lot of press for being precocious on this album; he played all the guitars and bass tracks, plus harmonica (Johnny played drums, piano and vibes; this was a two-man band, courtesy of overdubs, plus Delmar Evans on vox). And he does do an amazing job for a kid; but you can't listen to him as a kid. What he does is a very good job for ANYONE, regardless of age. Cold Shot, all these years later, is one of my top 4 blues albums (B.B.King 'Completely Well', Muddy Waters 'Hard Again', John Lee Hooker 'Serve You Right To Suffer' are the others). The songs are great, the arrangements are straightforward and clean, and the performances excellent throughout.
What you don't tend to hear about is the singer. Nicknamed "Mighty Mouth", Delmar Evans gives us real gifts throughout this disc. He has a strong, reedy falsetto and a low growl, and he bounces from one to the other, and in between, with great facility. Listen to the clip of "Sittin Here All Alone". It's a voice that truly deserves to be better known than it is, and this disc is a great way to get familiar with it. Listen to him cracking himself up in "That's Life", unable to continue on about the guy from Podunk who woke up in a bunk full of funk, he laughs, "Aw, f*** it, y'all play me sump'm, sh**!!" I still can't hear that without smiling wide.
Okay, now I've referenced profanity twice, let's get to the difference between the two albums contained here. "Cold Shot" was a legitimate release by the Johnny Otis Show, comprised of the musicians mentioned. It opened with "Signifying Monkey", a musical treatment of a traditional 'toast' (an african-american oral tradition, see Roger Abrahams [...])
From there it continues with straight up high-quality 1969 L.A. Blues. This album could be found in record stores.
"For Adults Only", on the other hand, was an entirely anonymous production. My guess is, that's because the cover art alone, let alone the songs, could have landed anyone involved with the project in jail on obscenity charges. Though the band is clearly the same, and F.A.O. even opened with the same track as Cold Shot, no real person's real name appeared anywhere on the original album. This album could be found in Adult Bookstores.
After Signifyin Monkey, "Snatch" continued with other examples of classic toasts Poolshootin Monkey, (here as "Signifyin Monkey part 2"), Shine and the Titanic (here, to a Bo Diddley beat and the melody of Otis' own "Willie and the Hand Jive, as "Hey, Shine") and Stack a Lee; plus anything else, it seems, they could find or put together, that had a whole lot of swearing in it. Two-Time Slim, an I'm-the-baddest-motha-you-ever-seen rant, incorporating some parts of "Who Do You Love" (walk 99 miles of barb'wire, wear a cobra snake for a necktie, etc.) has parts that are hilarious, and other parts that are unfit to be played in company (I'm the type that'd crawl over 50 good ***** to get to one fat boy's...WHAT?? Sorry I can't quote that here, just buy the album).
The last three songs are the weakest. "Two Girls" was on the original, but is stupid and embarrassing and 4 1/4 minutes too long. "It's Good..." is a protest song, not bad but not a shining success either. "Dirty Dozens" (aka "Yass Yass Yass") is a classic, done well.
Note: the original version of "Sittin Here Alone" ended with the lines "Oh, I ain't gonna do it no more/Cause every time I do it, you see/It makes my little wee-wee sore". Nothing about the song up to that point was anything but serious and heartfelt; in fact I never noticed the total non-sequiteur until I'd owned the album for a number of months. Unfortunately, that ending has been cut from this remastered release. Too, bad, it was (like a whole lot of this music) unique and hilarious.
Note 2: The original albums were "Cold Shot": tracks 1-10 here, in order; "For Adults Only": track 1, then tracks 11-18 (track 1 was the opening track for both albums); tracks 19-20 were not on either original record.
Note 3: Looks like R. Crumb did the artwork, doesn't it? Nope. Johnny O. himself.
How can you possibly go wrong..........2006-02-16
...With a title like "Snatch and Poontangs?"
I picked up this dusty old Johnny Otis title after stumbling on and freaking out over the Johnny Otis compilation Watts Funky - highly recommended as well. Enthusiastic reviews and some curiosity took care of any possible indecision. And, true to form, there should be none. So long as you have a sense of humor and a little stomach.
And perfectly complimenting the liberal does of raunch here are the serious blues chops and groove hounding going on with this unnamed house band. You'll also notice that proto-blues guys like George Thorogood were definitely keenly aware of The Johnny Otis Show.
Not sure another album like this exists. 3 Words: Big John Jeeter.
One of a kind.......2005-04-23
I hadn't heard this in thirty years,im glad they finally re-released it! Outrageous music and lyrics.lots of extra songs too.
And it's about time!.......2003-09-09
Back around 1987, I was working as a guitar tech for The Replacements. Billy (the stage mgr) had a beat up cassette copy of the Snatch & The Poontangs album. It was a huge hit on the bus. I don't think a day went by w/out one of us popping it into the deck for a listen.
I dubbed a copy shortly before the tour ended, and brought it home w/me -- where it became an instant favorite with my friends. Somewhere along the line, I lost the tape. I searched high and low, but was never able to find another copy.
About a week ago, I was washing some dishes and "Two Time Slim" popped into my head. As soon as I finished, I did a web search and was pleased beyond words to see that it's been re-released on CD.
It's every bit as good as I remember it... =o)
Buy It To Hear Shuggie!.......2003-01-04
There are a lot of reasons to recommend this CD. First, it's a double CD featuring Johnny Otis' 1968 comeback release "Cold Shot" combined with Johnny Otis' 1969 "Snatch and the Poontangs". Second, it contains two previously unreleased tracks, "It's Good To Be Free" and "The Dirty Dozens". Third, the music is excellent and shows that there is a lighter and humorous side to the blues and last but not least, it features some funky rhythms and wicked lead licks by Johnny's then 13-year-old son Johnny Shuggie Otis Jr. Not much material is available from Shuggie who retired at the ripe age of 22 and it's a real shame. Today, Shuggie is in his early 40's and is starting to resurface, lets hope he comes back and lives up to his potential. X-rated? Well, maybe in 1968. However, if this were released today, it may warrant an R rating solely for some of the language used in the later half of the CD.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Keyboardist Robert Walter has built a reputation for his gutbucket Jazz-funk chops from his work in the Greyboy Allstars. Now taking it to the streets with his own 20th Congress, Walter is joined by Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Greyboy guitarist Elgin Park, and some funky cats from the San Diego club scene. A fine crew of funk-jazz chefs, the Congress cooks up a soul-stirring mix of Walter originals, Dr. John and John Patton covers, and even a hidden cover of Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Walter and Co. have no problem making their points in a relatively quick five minutes accorded most tunes. Nonetheless, when they do stretch out, as on closer "Blues for Y2K" and "Instant Lawn," listeners can get a sense of the players' ingenuity. Perfect for the backyard BBQ or the downtown lounge, Money Shot is a fine solo debut from Walter and another great addition to the Fog City catalog. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
Boombox-optimized "back to the chicken shack" grooves from keyboard player Robert Walter (founding member of the Greyboy Allstars). With special guest Stanton Moore!
Customer Reviews:
File Under Old-School!.......2006-08-27
Robert Walter may have been born on the West Coast, but his style is from New Orleans. And how funky it is! All of these 11 tracks (even the hidden'12th one tha tcovers a heavy metal song) posess serious groove and bite - New Orleans style.
And while hitting that deep pocket, Walter and his cohorts do not forget to show off their musicianship. All too often, funk jams can get boring due to meandering and directionless solos, but that is not the case here. Of particular note is Walter's organ and Gustalem's alto sax for their ability to keep solos exciting and climactic.
And when I say this sounds like a New Orleans record, I am the oppositte of kidding. If one closes their eyes during the second track (originally played by Dr John and the Meters) one could easily be fooled into thinking that the Meters were playing this version as well, with Walter playing the part of Art Neville and Stanton Moore, the spitting immage of Joseph Modeliste.
Highlights for me were the aforementioned "Everybody waanna get rich) rite away," the slow, grinding "White Russ," the extended jam of "Instant Lawn," and the very experimental "Blues for Y2K."
Simply put, though, this CD grooves like nobody's business from front to back.
From Galactic and KDTU, go to RW20C.......2002-06-27
I bought this on an Amazon recommendation while purchasing a little Galactic and Karl Denson. It took me a while to truly appreciate it, but now it won't leave the short rotation in my car. As with any of these jazzier jambands, I would recommend seeing them live to ge the real flavor. These honkies know funk.
It's not for everyone, but if you like that B-3, funk, 70's cop-show theme song sound, you'll like these guys. Stanton Moore, my new favorite drummer, does a great job on this album, but don't fret that he's not a permanent fixture. Whoever they have on drums these days is fantastic.
Give this one time. It'll gets better with age.
I like it, but something's a little off..........2002-04-16
I love the Greyboy Allstars and follow the individual musicians as they have come into their own. Robert Walter is finding a niche, and it's a pretty nice one, but this disc isn't quite there yet. It doesn't have the drive of Soulive or the unbridled funk of Stanton Moore, I would recommend those before this disk. It's a little restrained to me.
A nice album.......2001-11-10
RW and Stanton Moore put together some phat grooves in this album. If you don't mind some trite melodies once in a while, I recommend this CD. Peace :out
neo-funk contenders.......2000-10-10
A rock-solid set of organ-driven, '70's-style instrumental funk easily reccommended to fans of MMW, Galactic, Headhunters, etc. IMHO, the 20th Congress are among the better practitioners of the increasingly popular neo-funk style. While nothing here could really be called original or groundbreaking, the disc features a nice variety of grooves, deftly avoiding the boredom-through-repition effect that all too often undermines groups within this genre when they attempt (and fail) to replicate the energy of their live sets within the confines of a recording studio. The 20th Congress displays a crack level of collective musicianship throughout(particularly Mr.Walter on the keys and drummer Stanton Moore, on loan from Galactic) and the disc is very well-produced. As an added value, this is an "enhanced" CD with additional audio and video tracks that can be played on a CD-ROM drive. I should also note that there is a bonus track hidden at the end of the album in the usual fashion -- it's a highly funkified cover of "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." (Yes, the Judas Priest song!)

OFFICAL HIP-HOP REVIEWER.......2006-12-12
hello there rap fans around the world, im here to write another review to hopefully help you with your decision on the cd.
Now if you guys looking into buying this album have not heard richi rich on his own and have just heard him on tupacs albums and from such songs as " YOU AINT GOTTA LIE TO KICK IT " from 2pacs album "ARE YOU STILL DOWN" and wonder if he is any good on his own1?
rich has the same lied back style of lyrics and voice as in " LIE TO KICK IT " and on his album he has a great producer which trows good beats for rich to do his THANG with.
deep bass line with a G-FUNK like sound in the back and a unique OAKLAND style but i must admit thought i thought more of the cd when looking at it's reviews on amazon but when i got it home after buying the cd found it a little dissapointed! it is a hard to listen to album but it did eventualy grow on me but i still wouldn't pay big bucks for the cd. i do love rich's voice and style of lyrics. (most be a oakland thing) lol. anyway as i do in all my reviews which you are more then welcome to read lets.
** sum up the album for the listeners. **
if your a lied back listener and enjoy loud bumping bass then this album maybe for you.
if your more of a dj quik fan and prefer more groovey funky beats and song, like biggie then itz worth buying but dont pay big bucks for it. i think around about $16 under is a fare price. hope i was helpfull every1.

Takin' Ends.......2002-07-10
This Cd Right here Popped in the summer of Nine Tre`. I use to Bump this in my Blazer. I remember all the show DMS us to put o in the city. This Cd was the best Seattle had in a Long time. Just waiting for something New! Still thinkin of you DLD!
206 Underground at its finest!.......2001-08-28
Back in the City Where it Rains All the Time aka Seattle, this album was the only thing you heard during the 93-94 era. Taking Ends gives a peak into the true Seattle hip-hop vibe not the bamber booty shake you hear coming from sir-mix-a-lot. The beats are laid back and the lyrics are tight. I think that if this group wasn't on D-Shot's label they would have really made a name for themselves. They also have the tightest song on the D-Shot "Boss Ballin'" Album, "Hoes [Be Trippin]"
This cd shows good command of lyrical content........1998-12-10
This cd shows good lyrical content and the beats are hittin' on more than a few tracks. The overall perception I get on this cd is that this group is bringin' the "real" to everyone who likes hip-hop.

Amazing.. One of the best Rap Albums EVER created.......2003-12-30
D-Shot has some of the illest trackst ever recorded to date, one of the most under-rated rappers of all time. D-Shot takes you on a adventure full of hard chocolate battering rams, deep dark caverns, toothless whores, and Harley Davidsons. If you like rap, and don't own this album, buy it NOW. If you already own this album, smash it in your mothers face, and buy a new one. PEACE..
...excellent example of TRUE bay area rap..........1999-12-08
this album is a classic...every track will have you jumping...it will become necessary for you to try and learn all of the words...this is definitely d-shot's best album...i highly recommend this cd...peace
Awesome debut by D-Shot .......1999-10-31
This album is just amazing and you can't believe it's from 1992. Sick Wid it released a perfect album. D-Shot is such a tight rapper, and with the help of some label inmates and mighty producer Studio Ton he drops a perfect album. It's pretty short but it's WAY BETTER than those 20 plus track albums they deliver these days. A perfect album you just press PLAY and listen to every single song on this album. An album you'll really enjoy listening too, it's gangsta hardcore rap but most of it is some playa s**t, what D-Shot knows best. Shot Calla is a "old" album, but it was really ahead of its time when it was released and you get to hear a Sick Wid It Record before the label got distributed by Jive nationwide. It IS a classic, and any West Coast rap fan should get it. For those who don't know - D-Shot, together with his brother E-40 and their crew The Click, is one of the first ones to get into the independent game. After Sick Wid It's success, many rappers (especially from the Bay Area) followed their lead and made themselves a lot of money. Just don't forget where it all started.

What Is Soul?.......2005-01-28
An impossibly wonderful collection of rarities from a Los Angeles based soul label. I wasn't familiar with any of the artists on this CD, but don't let that stop you - this is classic soul with an intelligent and often slyly humorous bent to the lyrics, as evidenced in songs like "Loving You is Killing Me," "Everybody's Got a Hang Up," "Put Another Dime in the Parking Meter," and the document-of-the-era "What Is Soul," in which voices of all ages attempt to define soul over a smokin' soul backdrop. While Motown and Stax may have dominated the charts in the late 60s, this CD is proof that vital music was still being made elsewhere. Good times.
