Borrowing as much from UK pre-Beatles instrumental legends the Shadows as the reverb-drenched American surfmeisters of the '60s, Toronto's Shadowy Men are a tough act to duct-tape to the chair. These '90s guys keep squirming loose to add unexpected elements to their brew. Benny Goodman's "Swing, Swing, Swing" pops up in "I Know a Guy Named Larry." And "Bang Bang," the Sonny Bono tune, tellingly combines gypsy swagger and 007 intrigue with a rockabilly bridge. Like San Francisco's Mermen, this is kinda surf and kinda not. When the Shadowy Men play Brian Wilson's "In My Room," you can bet they've got a pail of water balanced over the door, just waiting for some sap to walk in. --Jud Cost

Dim the Lights, Chill the Ham.......2007-03-18
This album is a must have if you like surf.
Grab a beer and fire up the grill!.......2006-04-01
I've owned this CD for a couple of years and I don't listen to it much, but I played it a few days ago and I was immediately transported to a wooden deck by a house with a gas grill cooking burgers and I had a beer in my hand thinking about how good life it.
This kind of music just sets a kind of mood, and whatever that mood is depends on your imagination, but I'll bet you imagine something in the Summer that is fun or relaxing. I love this stuff.
Best of Surf/Indie Rock.......2005-11-29
Along with Man or Astroman?, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet released several outstanding indie instrumental albums in the 1990s. This is their second and probably best one, and still sounds great almost 15 years later. Fans of this band should also check out 'Fresh Gasoline' by Phono-Comb.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the legendary Shadowy Men!!!.......2003-12-27
Anyone who is a fan of great Instrumental surf, lounge, or "spy" music must pick this up. This album makes great background music to conduct your own secret covert spy missions to. The performances here are one of a kind!!! You owe it to yourself to check this one out!!
A Whooping crazy happy spazzy Five Stars O' fun!.......1998-10-16
A very upbeat recording from a bunch of happenin' Canadians. A must have to add to your collections! An added bonus? Not many people know their groovy style so they are relitivly CHEEP! Also look for their (first?) one "Savvy Show Stoppers!" or try the Barenaked Ladies (Gordon) or Moxy Fruvous (Bargainville) for other upbeat canadian tunes!

I Don't Know Why, But I Like It.......2003-10-17
Lo-Fi garage/punk. I listen to everything from rock to country to folk to jazz to blues. Somehow this thing keeps making it's way back into my CD player every few months - I really can't explain it.
Can I get an Amen!.......2001-11-27
The Neckbones came to town while I was in college in Athens, Ohio. I walked away from their show knowing what it must have been like to actually see the Stooges in a little dirty bar. They drank, threw beer, and caused at least two fights - one which involved the bassist jumping off the stage mid-song to pummel this little punk kid. But most importantly, they played sloppy, memorable, brilliant punk/blues tunes. This band should be legendary, but seem to get very little, or no promotion. Fat Possum Records seems to sink all of their resources into RL Burnside - and don't get me wrong, Burnside is great - but they need to promote some of their other immensly talented acts, most notably the Neckbones. Everyone is proclaiming lately that the Strokes have saved Rock and Roll - The Neckbones already did it but no one was listening. And if you pitted the two against one another in a steel cage death match, the Neckbones would kick the hell out of the Strokes.
Twist it up and shake it on down.......2000-07-06
Don't buy this record. Save your money for when the Neckbones come to town, get really drunk, and go see the only band that matters live and in person. You may not have been around in '56 to see Elvis get banned from T.V. or in '65 to see the Who play the Marquee club in London, but the Neckbones are as close as you're going to get to anything that dangerous at this late date. Just like the Who, the Neckbones' records are a feeble approximation of their live show, but you might want to buy the Lights Are Getting Dim anyway so that you have something to listen to on the 364 nights a year when the Neckbones are not in town.
Rock and Roll's Last Chance.......2000-06-21
Jesus H. Christ, what an incredible album. If these guys had been around 20 years ago you would have read about them in Music History books. Rock-n-Roll baby, like it was supposed to be. The label for which they record should be ashamed of the lack of promotion these guys have gotten. They are undoubtedly the last gasp for true rock. From the guitar driven genius of "64 Days" to the beautiful crafting and singing of "Red Wagon" these guys blow me away. It makes you cry when you look at the sorry shape of pop music today, and see somebody like this on the sidelines. I haven't heard music like this in years, and it makes me sick that the rest of the world will never know about it. Three singers, catchy songs with sing-along choruses, and most impressive, danceable music. Fat Possum has really laid an egg in marketing what is truly the only sure thing on their label. A ringing endorsement that crack and record sales don't mix. Shame on the label that has the best band in the world and is foolishly sqaundering their chance.Buy this record if you still look for and appreciate true, unbridled rock-n-roll, and tell Fat Possum Records they have truly [jeopardized the chance for] the only real band in the world.I weep for the future, as my Neckbones records sing me to sleep. MUST HAVE!
Now Playing on the Himalaya ride in Hell.......2000-02-13
When I was about 14, I bought a beat-up electric guitar at a flea market in Florida for about ten bucks, took it home and sawed huge chunks of it off in the garage, spray-painted it fire red, tuned it to an open chord, and played it through my dad's vintage tube amp so loud and distorted it blew the speakers on the very first try. I became sullen after this experience, and decided to create my very own record, slicing open the front cover of my parent's copy of the soundtrack to "Jesus Christ Superstar" and re-taping it together, blank-side up, with duct tape, gluing photos of me and my friends to the cover, and adorning it with an artistic rendering of my guitar-feedback-amp-blowing escapade. The name of this fictitious rock-god outfit? The Boogers. Our imaginary set was to consist of Ramones covers and the obligatory fifteen-minute feedback jam-session wherein we would pummel the crowd with beer bottles. I hid this masterpiece album-that-never-was under my bed for years, staring at it and laughing until it disappeared, sadly, in a move.
I recant this meaningless story to announce that The Band That Never Was has resurfaced as this, the greatest independent release of the year. If there ever was a reason to listen to rock music, it might well be this album, of which basically nothing is said anywhere, and that's cool, 'cause they're relatively local and I get to see them whenever I want (although I haven't yet). It gives me great and perverse satisfaction knowing that many people might refer to ths album and its music within as "gross". I don't care if anyone thinks this is immature, unimaginative thud-rock, because THIS IS WHAT PUNK ROCK WAS MEANT TO BE, and albums like this come along once in a decade and remind me why I started listening to rock and roll in the first place. Good grief, it's fantastic.

The final flying burrito brothers record.......2000-06-17
"Dim Lights" is a reissue of the album I originally bought called "Sleepless Nights". To me, I think it's a great album because the songs or more of a precurser to Gram's solo material.
Songs like "Dim Lights", "Close Up The Honkytonks", "Crazy Arms", Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down", and "Your Angel Steps Out Of Heaven" have the "sound" of Gram's first solo LP "GP".
Then you have Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home", which is a Gram "classic". One song nobody ever mentions is "Green, Green Grass Of Home", perhaps my favorite all time Gram song. He was known for singing a sad song with that aching, cracked voice, and this song captured Gram at his heartached best.
Throw in the Stones "Wild Horses", "Six Days On The Road", and all of the others, and you have an absolutely classic recording.
Odds and ends from the Parsons era.......1999-12-01
Gram Parsons helped found The Flying Burrito Bros. and helped create one of their all-time greatest albums (69's brilliant, must-have debut ("The Gilded Palace Of Sin"). He completed one more lp with the Burritos before embarking on a short-lived solo career--short lived because he himself was, dying in 1973. He was very obviously one of country- rock's founding fathers and one of the all-time greats. But you probably would never know it from this album. Basically this collects various stray tracks not included on the first two lp's and which surfaced on a couple '70's compilations. There is a great b-side in 'The Train Song' though. The great tracks, with the exception of 'Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down' and the b-side, are on the domestic compilation ("Farther Along")--rendering this cd pretty dispensable to all but Burritos completists and/or Parsons diehards. While the songs are all great, and while the other Burritos are great as always, Parsons vocals are not always up to snuff on these leftovers. And thats actually being generous on more than one or two tracks. So, while this is a superb country-rock collection, it's not a superb Flying Burrito Brothers album. Just a good one.

Album Description
Slow songs of loss and longing, regrets and hope, unashamedly sung, broken-voiced and honest. Get the headphones. Dim the lights.
Under the name of The Worry Knot, singer-songwriter Michael Hughes releases his first collection of songs--echoes in minor keys on life and love that come back around as highly personal, vulnerable and brave tracks on this debut, "Under Trees."
"Do you remember that little bed on Highland Street? We'd get all tangled up and free," writes a searching Hughes in "That Place." "Help me find that place again / I'm dying here with you so near / And there's so many things between us."
Hughes is clearly staring himself down in the mirror, playing and singing in a way that cuts very close to the bone.
The most sure tracks are "Rain Keeps Falling" with its accessible guitar work and "Lazy" with its sardonic refrain of "So what, so what?" Indeed, Hughes' lyrics seem to paint pictures of people who are decidedly unsure, perhaps a bit like you and me. And while he paints canvasses in shades of blue and gray there remains some hope, some faith in love to save the day.
"Under Trees" is Michael Hughes' first quiet hello in the dark; a portrait of an artist surfacing, about to emerge. The playing is necessarily understated and the poetry is superb!

Epic of one's personal struggle, success, and mediocrity..........2001-09-14
Insightful, inspiring, moody, depressing, sleepy, jolting, and comforting are words that describe this record. Nick Drake and Tim Buckley come to mind. What else can I say? At times, I laughed and at other times, I cried. Take time and explore this heavy epic of one's personal struggle, success, and mediocrity. I was not prepared for the journey of emotions and how true at times the reflections were to me. Enjoy.
