Wonderfull Collection to have but no Orignal Art Work........2007-06-21

This is without any doubt the best musical presentation for STAR WARS trilogy with excellent remastering. Also, wonderfull music to listen.

It was arranged in same order as the movie and i think it has all the music from the films and more. Also it contain the original 20th Century Fox Fanfare recording for each movie which is rare to listen. In this way you can listen and enjoy the way was the music is recorded for each movie at that time without any enhancement, and that for Star Wars truly music lovers.

The only drawback i found that is lacking the orignal art work for each movie which are the finest and best ever. There are wonderful posters from different type, style A, B, C, and advanced, which i was expecting to see them again here or somewere els.

I was hoping and wishing from ( A Long Time Ago ... ) that they release again same original recording for Star Wars and Empire strikes back when they released first time in 1977 and 1980. I don't know why it has been decline ever since. At that time each movie released its sound track in two album with different and excellent arrangement. I believe this is a perfect arrangement and better in term of music listening. Im just hoping releasing them again with finest remastering.

A fountain of youth for a Star Wars geek.......2007-02-13

It has been a long time since I last dared to take out my old Star Wars LP, with its well remembered skips and pops. Now, thanks to the Boxed set of the Star Wars Trilogy, I can listen to it again as it was intended to sound, and as often as I like. It is like revisiting an old friend, but there are differences: for one, there is more music, and it has been restored to its actual running order, unlike the LP which cut and spliced a bit to create rounder, perhaps more balanced listening. But for a true fan of the films, it is deeply satisfying to hear the score in its proper order and entirety, even if at times it can ramble on or shift more suddenly than a typical symphonic work. That being said, John Williams is a master at composing for film, so that even taken out of context it is beautifully listenable.
The major drawback to the boxed set is the complete lack of liner notes or any kind of commentary--one of my favorite features of the old LP were the inserted notes. So much thought went into the score that it demands commentary. Admittedly, I haven't yet been able to access the "unlock and go" feature on the internet, so perhaps the lack of liner notes on the box is rectified there. Another surprise, given the fact that there is room on the CD's to include more music, alternate takes (and even an extended secret "inner groove" on the first disc), is that in the case of episode 6, music that was added for the new edition of the film is included but not the music it replaced. Admittedly this was the least interesting music in the soundtracks, namely the "pop" music in Jabba's palace and the Ewok's chant at the end, but for the sake of completion, it should also have been included. A minor quibble, and more than made up for by the inclusion of the 20th century fanfare and the second Cantina track.
All-in-all, this boxed set is a must for anyone for whom the original trilogy was a special part of their youth. It will instantly bring you back to that state of wonder when you first saw the films, and on repeated listens it will continue to reveal the genius of John Williams.

A New Hope:

What to say about Star Wars? It's all too known to say very much. But let me just point out a few things, instead. The Main Title track, after the fanfare calms, is quoting 'Mars' from Holst's 'The Planets'. "The Dune Sea of Tatooine" is a tribute to Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'. The bonus track contains several different takes on the Main Title if you sit around and wait--there is a LOT of silence 'til it starts, but it's fascinating to hear the subtle differences from take to take. With "May the Force Be With You" and "Princess Leia's Theme", we have the beginning of the lovely, melodic leitmotifs we have come to associate with Star Wars music.

The Empire Strikes Back:

Both the best movie and the best soundtrack of the original trilogy, in my opinion. Whether or not you agree about the movie, the music here really is the best, from a professional standpoint and not just an "it's pretty!' one. Three huge things happen in this movie, musically: "Han Solo and the Princess", the love theme which is based on "Princess Leia's Theme"; "Yoda's Theme"; and, last but certainly not least, "The Imperial March". I believe the two biggest, most recognisable themes of the saga are the Main Title theme and "The Imperial March", which was constructed from half-developed "evil" cues from 'A New Hope', and also Chopin's "March funèbre, Lento" from 'Piano Sonata No.2 in B flat minor' (trust me, you know it).

The Return of the Jedi:

The only new themes (there are plentiful delectable motifs) to come out of this movie are "Parade of the Ewoks", which nearly succeeds in making the Ewoks themselves cute, and the extremely luscious "Luke and Leia". "The Emperor's Theme", introduced in 'Empire Strikes Back', is emphasised, and voices lace over the epic duel between father and son (not nearly as stimulating as the music or the fight scenes of the prequel trilogy). It is true, there are some slightly embarrassing tracks ("Threepio's Bedtime Story", "Jedi Rocks"), but somehow all is set right by the power of "Victory Celebration" (which evokes much the same in its feeling of somewhat tragic triumph that "Now We Are Free" does in 'Gladiator'). It closes the saga perfectly (and we won't be mentioning the Yub Nub song, thank you very much).

I might also mention that Star Wars themes do wonders for hearing intervals. And that knowing the intervals make relationships between themes throughout the saga that much more interesting.

You can feel the Force around you........2006-08-31

I have never owned these before and I bought them for a SW Themed Party but constantly play them, if you are a fan these are a must own, especially since they include both end tracks for EP.6 the Ewok OE and the new Calypso one from the SE. Finally all of these Disc's are CD Text Capabile.

Quality could be better.......2006-02-14

This is the best way to get the soundtrack collection of the three original films. With some minor exceptions, the tracks are in the same sequence of the films so you can follow the story unfold the same as watching the movies.
The sound quality does leave a bit to be desired overall. Granted there is only so much that can be done from the original recordings, but it seems as though they tried to over-remaster most of the tracks and did not do enough with others. This has left many of the scores sounding thin, bright and shallow. For the price of this boxed set, I would have expected a little bit more time put into making this collection sound better. Ideally, having the entire saga re-performed would have likely offered the best solution for audio purists, though likely not capatured exactly the same feel as the original performance.
Essentially, this boxed set is a trade off between having the original scores of Episodes 4 through 6 and sacrificing the overall sound quality that a John Williams performance deserves.
For a point of reference, my sound system is a B&W and McIntosh combination with the speakers being the same model as what was used in nearly all recording studios at the time of the later half of these films.

a good album.......2007-06-27

I've been a fan of mewithoutYou for almost two years now. I got "Catch For Us The Foxes" and liked it. I bought this album not really expecting much improvement, but let me tell you, mewithoutYou has made leaps and bounds between the two records. This album stands as a cohesive album rather than just 13 rock songs randomly thrown together, which is what "Foxes" sort of felt like at times. This album is full of experimentation, as there are more instruments, more singing, even vocal harmonizing, new and creative rhythms--it's really a dramatic improvement in the band's sound. The lyrics are as sharp as ever, managing to be poetic and accessible at the same time.

The only drawback to this album is that Aaron Weiss, the singer, can be very irritating if you don't buy into what he's saying. Not that he's spreading propaganda or preaching fire and brimstone, but he's just very open and honest, and makes himself so emotionally vulnerable that it's hard to listen to if you can't let yourself become vulnerable along with him. Yeah, I know it sounds dumb. But it's the truth. This album will turn you off if you won't let it under your skin.

So, if you're prepared to let yourself be carried away wherever the album takes you, then by all means, buy it. Even if you're not prepared to hear Aaron bare all his emotions, you can probably still get it and let it grow on you.

I recommend this album.

mewithoutYou gets even better, incredibly.......2007-05-09

I almost hesitate to describe the songs on mewithoutYou's new album, Brother, Sister--it feels like spoiling a movie or revealing the ending of a book, as if I might take away some of the magic by telling too much. On the other hand, the depth and originality of the release are things I could rant about for pages. The album, which takes its title from a prayer of Francis of Assisi, has the same humble beauty one would expect from the title. Religion here isn't something to put into songs to evangelize or too appease a fan-base, but an integral part of life that is expressed with the same honesty you'd expect when talking about any other topic.

And the music! The music makes even the simplest lines (like "Open wide the door, my Lord / to whatever makes me love you more" from "C-minor") into heart-rending pleas. Besides the effect-laden guitar parts, you'll hear a harp, flugelhorns (courtesy of Anathallo), and more, all forming a lovely sonic palette that complements deep lyrics. This is an album where the lyrics wouldn't be the same without the music and the music wouldn't be the same without the lyrics.

The album starts quietly. Aaron Weiss almost mumbles the lyrics, "`I do not exist,' we faithfully insist, sailing in our separate ships and in each tiny caravel. Tiring of trying, there's a necessary dying, like a horseshoe crab in its proper season sheds it shell." Reaching a certain point, an acoustic guitar comes in strumming. Ship bells ring, giving the track's nautical feel an appropriate flavor without sounding at all cheesy. It ends with the superbly memorable lines, "If ever you come near, I'll hold up high a mirror / Lord, I could never show you anything as beautiful as you."

Not to say it's all so mellow. "O'Porcupine" is a rousing rock song that ends on an optimistic note--"In our darkness a light shines / and all I wanna say is that that light is God / and though I might've been mistaken on this or that point / that light is God."

The album ends with a lovely finale (one that I won't spoil for you) and closes. If you're like me, you'll turn it on again when it's done.

what new mystery is this?.......2007-02-04

The third album from Tooth and Nail Records' genre bending rock outfit MewithoutYou is a true musical delight and a brisk breath of fresh air. As a band that refuses to fall in line a just another hardcore/emo band, MewithoutYou's fresh new sound is continually being changed and refined heading into "Brother, Sister".

On this gem of an album lead singer Aaron Weiss had decided to share his singing ability with us, using less of the psuedo rhythmic talking that was used exclusivley up until now. If you're a long time fan though, don't worry, most songs are a strong mixture of the two singing styles. Also Aaron's soft singing voice fits the music perfectly. As the band continues to experiment with new sounds we are greeted with a few new instruments to the mix including trombone and harp. Overall this album has a more mellow sound that previous outings.

A real key point of the new album is the poetic words of Weiss. Though this has always been a staple for the group, the lyrics this time around shows the definate stregthening in the singer Christian faith since their debut LP "A->B Life". The prime example is in the amazing song "Nice and Blue (pt. two)" a sequel so to say of the original track featured on their first album. In his beautfiul poetic lyrics (I consider him the best poet in modern popular music) Aaron show this growth in faith "If you look out and see a trace of a dark red that was once my face in the clarity of such grace, you'll forget all about me."

The album as a whole is strung together beautifully. Each song seemingly meant to be place next to one another (like all great albums should) The threee acoustic laden "Spider" sing alongs, that are placed among the record like interludes, also help to keep the album more conhesive. While the last song, the harp filled "In a Sweater Poorly Knit", is my absolute favorite track, helping to end the album on an amazing note. MewithoutYou has released another amazing CD and are currently making some of the best and most original music of our time! This album stands up well if not surpasses the bands brilliant early work.
Now if people would just take notice...

Amazing.......2007-01-05

This is my favorite band, which is saying a lot because I normally listen to Hardcore and Metal, not what mewithoutYou plays. This album is even more unorthodox than their last two, but their music suffers none. If what you like about mewithoutYou is their driving beats, their airy and whimsical guitar overtones, or their unsurpassedly poetic lyrics, you won't miss anything in Brother, Sister.

What has changed, however, is that they have continued to gradually depart from their Hardcore roots. What on their other albums would have been a beat-carrying riff is now a beat-carrying riff slightly toned down and accompanied by an accordion or harp. If you are not one to appreciate a Bohemian approach to music, mewithoutYou may not be for you, but if you enjoy music well-made and inventive, they will quickly become a favorite.

P.S. ANY of their albums are excelent to go to sleep to.

MWY is an excellent, and haunting group. Aaron Weiss's delivery and lyrics are so unique. This is a great alternative rock band, and each cd gets better and better.

The best Star Wars soundtrack.......2007-03-02

While all the Star Wars films have extraordinary soundtracks, Return of the Jedi stands slightly above it's peers in terms of music. John Williams really went all out for the finale! The attack on the Death Star, Luke's final duel with Darth Vader, the battle on the Endor moon, Vader's funeral and celebration make this one incredible CD.

I love this soundtrack but - This release does not contain the "jam" that the Max Reebo Band plays while Chewbacca is being led to his jail cell......I wonder why?

A Final and Astounding Work of Art from John Williams.......2005-09-23

As always, John williams brings masterful composing to the Star Wars movie screen. The sweeping and spine-tingling score will leave you breathless and stick with you for years.

It starts out a little slow, but of course all the classic themes are present. The action picks up at track 7 (Dsic 1) The Pit of Carkoon/Sail Barge Assault. The moving track 8 will announce the arrival of the infamous emperor with deep male voices and dark themes, then we are swept back to Degobah for Luke's final meeting with Yoda in slow trumpets proclaiming Yoda's news and final announcement to Luke, finally we meet Obi Wan once again, whose conversation with Luke reveals stunning news with the trumpet theme of Skywalker and the warm, comforting violins. Comical additions such as Jabba's baroque recital and Jedi Rocks close the first disc with a slower pace, almost as if it were intermission.

Disc 2 opens with the playful Parade of Ewoks, a new theme created to portray the cute but deadly inhabitants of Endor, played on flutes, trumpets, and a variety of other instruments. Next we are introduced to the change in Luke and Leia's relationship with a slow flute and violin piece showing how strong their bond has become.

Track 3, Brother and Sister, Father and Son, finds the Skywalker theme as Luke tells Leia a wonderful secret, which transitions into their new theme. The Emperor's throne room conveys the serious danger of our heros in deep male voices and sweeping music. The three battle pieces are, of course, wonderful, but by far the best part is the piece matching when the rebels prepare to charge the Death Star in a great instrumental piece.

Last is the calm after the storm, the two tracks that are by far my favorite from this soundtrack. First is track 9, Leia's News/Light of the Force, in which we begin with a sweet, grand piece with Leia's theme and Luke & Leia's theme mingling in.
Next comes possibly the most moving piece of music created by John Williams as a lone trumpet breaks from the silence, playing the Skywalker theme, and it culminates in a tremendous and shattering climax, which settles back into the trumpet skywalker theme, as if in final send of, as Luke watches the man he had feared, redeemed, finally at peace.

Lastly, except for the extra tracks, we finish with the Ewoke celebration on endor, an amazing and wonderful piece of pure joy and revelation as we close upon our heros, all having found what they were looking for in the end, and see the final gathering of old friends.

Without a doubt, this is a must-have for soundtrack afficionados!

John Williams knows music.......2005-09-09

Okay, so this isn't my favorite star wars CD but it's good. I'm still hooked on Ep III soundtrack so that's why I haven't broken this one with repeated use. Still, ROTJ was an awesome movie and the soundtrack is responsible for much of the moodsetting. Happy or sad, the tune tells all.

Is it the best?.......2005-06-25

This soundtrack CD is probably one of the best John Williams has ever had and the best among all the star wars CD soundtracks of the classic ones. The songs are much more fun and lively. John Williams knows how to translate the music so well that it can blend in perfectly with the movie.

The compositions are really magnificent and the dynamics are really great. These are really among the unique ones. Very special indeed.

Some of the great songs are Jedi rocks (The part in the movie where Jabba The Hut is entertained by the new cantina band. The song is very lively and can really make your mood a lot better. Another one is the Victory Celebration (The last part where the death star was destroyed and they went to Endor to Celebrate.) The song really captured the mood of celebration. I loved it.

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

13 years ago, I had the tape of brother sun, sister moon and as a teenager and I would play it every night as I slept, I loved it. I dont know what happened to it and I have ever sence been looking for it, and I just baught the CD and am so excited.

Light and shadows.......2003-07-29

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

BNH really broke loose with this one, an intoxicating mix of jazz ("Snake Hips"), funk ("Fake"), and soul ("Spend Some Time").

A Flawless CD, Couldn't Make it Better if they Tried........2006-06-10

If I were trapped on a desert island with a cd player and I could choose one CD, this would be it. Brother Sister is flawless, plain and simple.

Wow, only 11 reviews for one of the better releases of the early 90's? Well, I just had to add my 2 cents worth of love for this disc. I fell in love with the single, DREAM ON DREAMER, which got heavy play on both the radio & video channels I watched back in the day.

The funny thing about a group like BNH which produces high quality music and is a somewhat self-contained band is that their music definitely stands the test of time. For those who get it in 2006 or after, they'll probably be very surprised to note that this disc was released in 1994! The group specializes in r&b funk and features one of the unique voices in r&b, N'Dea Davenport - while also producing terrific instrumental songs.

To this day, my favorite tracks are: DREAM ON DREAMER, DAYBREAK, SPEND SOME TIME, BROTHER SISTER, TEN TON TAKE, FOREVER & SNAKE HIPS.

If you don't have this disc in your collection and you like funkdified neo-soul, then you will love this disc!

I still love this album 12 yrs after the fact!
This album is like watching one of those great
Scorsese pictures that have been out for yrs
but every time you see it, you see something that
you never saw before!(In this case, hear!)
N'Dea and the boyz were kickin' azz
and takin' names on this one from the begining to end!
This is just a masterpiece and dare I say,
a template to which the whole neo-soul movement

Brand New Heavies.......2004-12-10

What can I say about one of the greatest funk bands known to man? BNH is pure FUNK to the core and inner most soul. Gravy-ness, nothing but pure gravy. Just put the music on and let it go. I love the songs and N'Dea Davenport is just perfect with them. The songs are way bomb, the bass lines are hotness and that makes for a great sound and an awesome band. I have never had the pleasure of hearing them live and if I had one regret in life that would be the one. Awesome band. Pure gravy-ness.

Barbara Cohen - a folk singer by trade melds pefectly into the rhythm's created by Paul Robb.

Long before Evenescence blended Classical Singing with Heavy metal Music,
Brother Sun Sister Moon (a.k.a. Luminous) Blended Techno and Trip-Hop with a Folk singer to make some of the best and most interesting music that I have come across in years.

Its so hard to explain this band beyond simply brilliant. The vocals are soulful and are conveyed in such a manner that you actually FEEL something from the recording. The music is beautiful, even the almost blatant Young MC bass line sample. It just works, and the whole album has a sense of completeness to it.

Actually, the lead singer's voice is closer to Souxsie of Souxsie and the Banshees than Portishead. The first track sucks you in!!! This CD is close to the trip-hop production of Bowery Electric's "Lush Life" in crackling vinyl sounds cradling electronic beats and bleeps.This is an excellent debut, but they have room to grow. And I look forward to it.

This is an album I keep coming back to over the years, and it always amazes me. I only wish that I could single-handedly convince everyone in the world to give this album (and the next album, under the name "Luminous") a chance.
