Bar-B-Que Soul-A-Bration [Box set]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Despite heavy industry competition, Rhino Records has yet to cede its title of "Label Most Likely to Make a Silly Idea Work." Latest case in point is the new "Party Packs" series' double-CD selection of grill-soundtrack sides packaged with recipes for ribs, catfish, and other delicacies, manufacturer coupons included. The music leans hard toward '60s soul (Otis, James Brown), often with a food-related bent (King Curtis's "Memphis Soul Stew," Little Milton's "Grits Ain't Groceries"). Left-field entries by Tony Joe White (who schools those of "y'all never been down south too much" on the mythical "Polk Salad Annie"), the Clovers, Willie Bobo, and Betty Wright ("Clean Up Woman" closes the set, naturally) assure that the discs avoid the over-familiar: They go down real easy, don'tcha know. --Rickey Wright

Bar-B-Que Fun.......2005-07-05
This album is just plain fun -- a mixture of R&B, Zydeco, jazz. It is a hodge-podge and whether or not you agree with all the selections -- and I am fine with every one of them -- it's still fun. If you don't have an extensive collection of these kinds of music, this is a fine "starter."
Fair-So many tunes don't really belong on here!.......2002-06-05
OK, so far I am the first(and perhaps only)one to review this BBQ collection of soul/r&b tunes. Luckily I borrowed this collection from a co-worker; I am glad I didn't actually have to pay for it. I've put together better collections of fun tunes for picnics, barbecues, hanging at the beach parties, etc. than Rhino did with this boxed set. The karaoke tunes alone shouldn't be on here-what were the folks at Rhino thinking when they slapped together this haphazard collection? Don't get me wrong, I love Rhino, thanks to them at least half of my sizeable music collection consists of stuff put out by them. Skip this one no matter what, just dig out your favorite party tunes & your guests will have a terrific time.
