When this CDS came out, the Puff Daddy Mix was all over the airwaves. The album version is very true to the Marvin Gaye track, in terms of the accompanying music.

RZA, the man who sculpted many of the early Wu-Tang sounds/solo albums/group albums/etc, came in and remixed his original. It was kind of updated, more futuristic sounding. It's got tight, crisp drums, which was kind of outside of the realm of his normal, "dirty" sound. The melody and bassline might sound repetitive, but its that motion that helps catapult Meth's grimey vocal. The fact that Mary J. still sounds flawless over this very underground Hip-Hop track shows all of their genius. This version rips any of the others in my humble opinion. One of my favorite Meth tracks, ever.

This is the best MM track that exists. The Puff Daddy remix is the best thing either PD or MM will ever make. Good luck trying to top it. You never will.

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. This two-CD package of 31 hits brings together selections from Brightman's original Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, including many definitive versions of Lloyd Webber classics. Also included are songs from her album Encore, which itself was largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections.

Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," and an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats, delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulley

Both of these discs afford great pleasure. The Lloyd Webber compilation presents many of his biggest hits in fine performances by his ex-wife. The Encore disc gives fascinating glimpses of worthy but little known pieces from musicals. Arrangements are wonderful, and Sarah Brightman is in excellent voice throughout. At times she has a tendency to wax a bit operatic, but she certainly does have the chops to bring it off successfully, so I'm not complaining. Obviously, Ms. Brightman was trained in the classical tradition, and she knows how to use her voice to best advantage in service to the material. In short, she has musical integrity.

Before she was a sparkling pop/classical diva, Sarah Brightman was a Broadway star and the onetime wife of the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber. This two-disc set that includes her "Encore," a collection of songs from mostly-obscure musicals, and "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection," several of Webber's songs (mostly picked from "Songs That Got Away" and "Surrender").

"Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" starts off with the gothic "Phantom of the Opera," but quickly moves on to lighter fare in the airy "Unexpected Song," a soaring duet with Cliff Richards in "All I Ask Of You," the sparkling "Love Changes Everything," and some tepid forays into the shrill "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory."

"Encore" is far more ethereal and steady. The piano-led "Whistle Down The Wind" starts it off on a strong note, before the aching "Away From You," operatic "Think of Me," affectionate "If I Ever Fall in Love Again," and the symphonic "Nothing Like You've Ever Known." A particular highlight is the sparkling "What More Do I Need," a little tune that celebrates how love brightens up even the most dingy little apartment, in the most miserable weather. "With your love/what more do I need?"

Sarah Brightman was obviously on solid footing with these two CDs. It might leave a bad taste in some fans' mouths that "Collection" is mostly compiled from a pair of other Brightman albums, but if listeners don't have "Surrender" and "Songs That Got Away," this two-disc set would be an excellent way to acquaint themselves with it.

"Encore" is steady and well-suited for Brightman's voice, as well as having a sort of Victorian-garden air. "Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection" has the most flaws of the two -- some of the songs like "Memory" aren't suited to Brightman's voice, and she comes across as shrill and uneasy. But in songs written for her talents and "Encore," her voice alternately soars and murmurs in an airy soprano.

Sarah Brightman reached her artistic pinnacle so far in the velvety "Eden," but her stuff here is still quite beautiful. "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection/Encore" two-pack is a satisfying look at some of Brightman's Broadway-based songs.

Yes, it's true. Sarah has nothing to do with these cds, but her voice. It's another record that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really "not that" Useful Group release to make money. Those two cds are very good though. If you have one of them, i suggest to get the other separatly.

A Will Must have!.......2007-03-09

This is a Will must have, track after track it just keeps on getting better!

After delivering serious and elegant jazz-soul albums that critics and a small but loyal core of fans enjoyed for over a decade, Will Downing should be allowed to pander a little to the masses.

Rather than "sell out" to the New Jack Swing (which was played out by then anyway) and the ever rising tide of hip-hop, "All The Man You Need" relies on a lighter, more breezy version of Downing's signature lush balladry and midtempo jams. It's a little trendy, by Will Downing standards, but not a dramatic departure.

"When You Need Me" (with Chante Moore) and "Only A Moment Away" are two more traditional standout tracks from this album, while "Grandma's Hands" and the title track take Will Downing into slightly different textures than his longtime fans expect. The overall effect is calming, but yet energizing; a far more memorable affair than the previous release: the classy but staid "Invitation Only."

Downing followed this album with the fiercely traditional "Sensual Journey" and that may be a better choice for his jazz-minded fans. That said, however, "All The Man You Need" is easily worth your time and should please most every adult R&B lover in your house.

Disappointing........2003-06-28

After recording such wonderful, jazz ballad-oriented albums like "Moods" and "A Dream Fulfilled", I found this CD disappointing as it is hip-hop and new jack swing-based. A great and gifted singer like Will needs better material and production.

Take Heart, This is Still Trademark Will Downing Music!.......2002-03-14

So, okay, this Will Downing CD is more "Urban"(rather than classic Soul/R&B that we are used to hearing from Will Downing) and this Will Downing CD is more Hip/Hop based (rather than smooth, mellow Jazzy sound that, again, we are used to hearing from Will Downing). Still, this Will Downing CD is a true "must have" in your CD collection. For all of you "Urban" and Hip Hop listeners, take special listen to "Summer Day", the Intro "It's On", and "All the Man That You Need" (all of which may, to you, be a first listen to this exceptional, soothing, sensuous R&B/Soul artist). For all of you long time listeners of Will Downing, take special listen to "When You Need Me" (his duet with Chante Moore), "Everytime It Rains", "Only A Moment Away", and "Love of My Life" - true, trademark, Will Downing. Still, for all of you Soul listeners, take special listen to "Grandma's House (did Bill Withers actually sing this first hand?) and "Tired Melody" - Will Downing's apparent homage paying to Old Skool Soul/R&B. Yes, this CD is a true example of the old and the new......however, a special plea to MOTOWN/UNIVERSAL: We true Will Downing fans do not need the hype, the pump, or this new-fangled so-called "today's modern R&B" from Will Downing to make all of us snatch his CDs. Remember the old adage: IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!! Please allow Will Downing to keep true to the his musical/singing/composing formula that has allowed him to hang around and to sing and bring to us great, beautiful music; and not have him succumb to Fad!!

I never listened to Will Downing before, but I listened to it and it sounds good. I like it though. If you get it, you won't be disappointed.
