4 out of 5 stars Reissue of a much-praised MTT debut.......2006-06-26

At 78 min., this is much more generous than other collections that pair Prokofiev's two Suites from Romeo and Juliet. The angry reviewer below is mistaken to accuse Tilson Thomas of composing any transitions of his own devising--he only placed portions of the ballet in dramatic sequence (Prokofiev's suites are in no particular order). This was MTT's first recording with RCA as music director in San Francisco, and when it was released in 1996, the U.S. reviews were rapturous.

Not so the British. The Gramophone grumbled about 'slick efficiency' and 'stickiness.' I think that's not true. The only problems that keep this recording from the highest rank, as far as my ears tell me, are first, the recorded sound. Though wide-ranging and dynamic, the original release tended to be coarse and thuddy (I don't own the reissue at mid-price, but perhaps something has been done to correct this).

The second and more important reservation isn't MTT's fault. Great conductors have already preceded him. Ancerl, Mravinsky, and Mitropoulos are among the old maestros who made outstanding versions of excerpts from the ballet. Among moderns we have had sonic blockbusters from Salonen and Abbado, both of whom dig into the score as MTT does not, and both of whom benefit from the astounding viruosity of the Berlin Phil. As for the complete ballet, versions by Lorin Maazel with the Cleveland Orch. on Decca and Gergiev with the Kirov Orch. on Philips stand out. MTT has a lighter touch than all of the above, which isn't necessarily a bad thing--his avoidance of shmaltz is admirable to me.

In fact, there are stretches here that sound just as good as the best. I can see why other listeners give this recording five stars; in light of so many great ones, I settled for four.

5 out of 5 stars The best available version of this music, hands down........2005-05-19

When Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony released their version of Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" a decade ago, critics hailed it as the gold standard among all recorded versions of this music. Even now, there seems no reason to revise that opinion. Choosing from among several available suites prepared by Prokofiev himself, Tilson Thomas shaped a version that is both dramatically and musically complete. He and his orchestra do full justice to the bittersweet lyricism and astonishing emotional range of Prokofiev's music. Especially at its mid-range price, this CD is a must for anyone who loves Prokofiev.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-08-04

Michael Tilson Thomas is truly one of the great living conductors. The things he has been doing with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for a decade now have been wonderful. This is one of the conductor's earliest collaborations with RCA Victor in selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Although other reviews have summed up most of my feelings on this CD, I do just want to emphasize MTT's musical vision in creating his own suite. The performance is incisive, dramatic, forceful, and thoroughly pleasing. As always, the SFSO plays with totally conviction and total faith in their music director. As one of the leading Russian experts of today, MTT has created here a fantastic disc.

2 out of 5 stars Decent interpretation marred by terrible intonation.......2007-04-06

I had great difficulty restraining myself from turning this off when listening to it for the first time, because London does such a terrible job of being anywhere near in tune for much of it. Combined with many missed notes in the brass, messy passagework in the strings, and woodwind playing that seems intent on doing anything BUT creating any sort of phrase, it's doubtful this is worth even the small price Amazon has it listed for.

For a budget recording of this that's actually decent, I'd be much more inclined to buy Naxos' release of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's version under Andrew Mogrelia.

5 out of 5 stars excellent choice for Romeo & Juliet.......2006-04-14

I am writing mainly in response to Sarman (Sweden). I own the fforte edition and have played this many years on several systems. On Onkyo DR-UN7 dvd receiver driving Epos 22's, the sound is excellent, as it was using Panasonic dvd player, NAD amplifier, and Epos 11's. Previn is one of best interpreters of Prokofiev--after all, he is a Russian born in Berlin. I don't know who could call either the playing or the re-mastering "dull". The natural alternative is Gergiev, re-issued on Philips great 50 recordings at medium price. That is also quite good. I would avoid the others.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A Beauty.......2006-01-05

While an appearance of both Argerich and Pletnev in the ten pianist "piano extravaganza", in which Lang -the I have no clue what I'm doing clown on the 88- Lang lived up to its expectation, did not set my expectations very high for a duo disc, this recording showed the danger of preconceived notions.
This is a truly great recording. Probably the best piano duo recording since the end of the Kontarsky Duo in the early 1980's.

Both the Prokoviev and the Ravel are superbly idiomatic and deserve a simple 10 out of 10. The duo playing is exemplary and this Mother Goose dwarfs earlier versions of Argerich in various duo combinations. The instruments are impeccable and so is the recording.

In all, a beautiful cd. I hope that more will follow from this eminent duo.

5 out of 5 stars Argerich and Pletnev Play Prokofiev and Ravel: Splendid Results!.......2005-09-13

That Martha Argerich and Mikail Pletnev are two of our finest pianists today goes without saying. When they play together, the result is magic. Few pianists can perform works for two pianos or one piano four hands with the kind of graceful aplomb and energy as these two - and make it sound like an afternoon soirée in their studio!

Mikhail Pletnev created this two piano transcription of movements from Prokofiev's ballet "Cinderella" and wisely elected to reference Prokofiev's own keyboard transcription as well as the orchestral score. The resulting work, dedicated to his friend Martha Argerich, is a witty, dreamy, multicolored pianistic synopsis of the ballet. Pletnev and Argerich perform with their usual panache and the keyboard has never sounded so rich!

In addition to this important Prokofiev two piano transcription the two artists join in Ravel's keyboard version of ' Ma mère l'oye' and they move into the world of Ravel with the same respect as for the Prokofiev. There are nuances here that at times are covered by Ravel's own brilliant orchestration and spending time with this delightful score is sure to enhance the listener's respect for the concert hall orchestral 'Ma mère l'oye'. Recommended without reservation. Grady Harp, September 05

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2005-06-26

I don't like throwing around words like "astounding", so when I say it, I mean it. The arrangement of the Cinderalla Suite, the performances and the recording all contribute to making this a most remarkable cd. You will not hear greater virtuosity anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Virtuosity.......2005-02-06

This is ravishingly beautiful and fascinating. Pletnev wrote this 2 Piano version of the Prokofiev Cinderella Ballet for Argerich and dedicated it to her. I cannot stop listening to it. Don't deprive yourself of this.

5 out of 5 stars Abbado's best Prokofiev in great sound.......2005-09-24

I am usually not a particular fan of Abbado in Prokofiev, finding him unsympathetic in the piano concertos with Kissin and a bit tame in Alexander Nevsky. But this relatively generous (68 min.) collection of the best excerpts from Romeo and Juliet is stunning. The viruosity of the Berlin Phil. is astonishing, even for them, and the sound is detailed and altogehter spectcular in its impact. This CD goes right to the head of the list, along with Salonen (also recorded with the Berliners), Gergiev, and Dorati.

5 out of 5 stars I agree 100 %.......2000-08-07

Abbado is a fine conductor, and he excels with Prokofiev's music. I've heard a few others, but this is easily the best.

5 out of 5 stars The best version available.......1999-10-15

Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic's version of Prokofiev's great work outshines any other available version. The sound is clear and the musicality brilliant. The demonstrate that overplayed hits like the Montagues and the Capulets march can be played beautifully, as if one hears it for the first time.

Aram Khachaturian's famous ballet, Spartacus, was first produced for the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad in 1956 and was hailed--in its 1968 version--as the most successful Soviet ballet since Prokofieff's Romeo and Juliet. High praise indeed. The story comes from the story of a Roman slave/gladiator who led a revolt against Rome but was betrayed by his followers. The ballet itself is distinguished by a wide range of distinct melodies and themes, and the three gathered here do cohere well. But the suites do not follow the ballet sequentially. These suites were written to stand on their own. Fun anyhow. --Paul Cook

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Music!.......2007-01-21

This collection of the three 'Sparticus' ballet suites by Aram Ilyich Khachaturian is one of the very few of Khachaturian pieces I've heard, and I got it primarily becaues my cinematic uberhero, Stanley Kubrick used KHachaturian's Gayne ballet suite in his soundtrack to '2001', so I thought other Khachaturian ballets would have the same charm.

This is almost true. What I discovered is the strong similarity in this music to Prokoviev, especially to his score for the film 'Alexander Nevsky' (and to some of the ballet music in 'The Red Shoes') None of this should be a great surprise as all three pieces were written about the same time by Russians!

My biggest disappointment is that while this music is immencely enjoyable, it is still not as strong as that greatest of Russian 20th century composers, Stravinsky.

This is primarily for those how are especially fond of ballet music in general, and Russian ballet music in particular.

4 out of 5 stars very good listening.......2006-11-07

I liked this recording very much since it comleted my whole ballet recording of Spartacus.Iloved the orchestra and of course Neemi Jarve is a fantastic conducter all in all the recording was very very good and I would recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars A generous collection of excerpts exceptionally well-played.......2005-11-29

Neeme Jarvi's selections from Khachaturian's ballet "Spartacus" are generous and exceptionally well-played, for the most part, by the Scottish National Orchestra. The brass, in particular, play with much gusto in these highly characterized excerpts. The three suites may not follow the progression of the ballet but they make an enjoyable collection nevertheless.

There is much to like in these extended excerpts, which comprise about thrice as much music as is usually gathered in a suite from "Spartacus", the composer's colorful ballet. Jarvi and his troupe obviously enjoyed themselves making this recording as they revel in Khachaturian's colorful score.

What keeps this from being a five star selection is the somewhat unidiomatic approach conductor and musicians take to the music. Jarvi, whose recordings specialize in unusual and oft-unheard repertoire, is perhaps too international in his approach to this music.

He and his band are neither big enough nor loud enough In "Variations of Aegina and Bacchanalia", the first excerpt from most collections of this music. They begin to catch on in "Scene and Dance with Crotalums" but still tend to rough over many of Khachaturian's hard edges.

The famous "Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia", which is the heart of this collection, is taken at a very rapid pace by Jarvi. The timing of 8:49 is 1:31 faster than a more idiomatic performance I've heard by Temirkanov. Jarvi's approach adds a passionate element to the music but also needlessly rushes it, denying its beauty and solemnity.

When Khachaturian conducted his own music there was never any room for subtlety and always room for sentiment in slower movements. Khachaturian's music is always full of pathos, which Jarvi tends to undercut in his own musical way. He dwells on musical values and orchestral execution at the expense of emotional largess.

You can hear this in just about every section of this performance including "Dance of the Egyptian Girl" from the third suite. It is wonderfully played but lacks the characterisitics that make Khachaturian's music unique.

It is as if Jarvi is trying to avoid the famous Chicago critic's charge that, "He who steals Khachaturian steals trash." In my opinion it is the trashy approach that makes Khachaturian's music so wonderful.

Still there is much to enjoy in this generous collection. Short of some languid bassoons, the playing is consistently first rate in a five by five recording that rivals the best work done today. Anyone that wants an extended collection of music from "Spartacus" or any Khachaturian ballet will not likely be disappointed with this compilation.

This twofer compendium--which contains all the songs from the Cro-Mags' first two albums--can serve as an ideal introduction to this tough-as-nails Gotham band, which swerved from brute-force hardcore to slightly more sophisticated thrash between the recordings. The Age of Quarrel material, sung by John Joseph, is pure street-thug hardcore--"Show You No Mercy," "Do unto Others"--that's heavy on both declarations of scene unity and threats against those who aren't part of the scene. Most tracks clock in under two minutes. The band stretches out on the Best Wishes songs, which see bassist Harley Flanagan taking over on vocals. More metallic in tone, à la Anthrax, the "new, improved" Cro-Mags prove themselves capable of kicking out the jams guitarwise and even provoking some thought through Flanagan's Krishna-conscious lyrics. --David Sprague

Anything by another Hardcore forefather is worth a listen. The older stuff is raw, but you can get and idea of where they were headed.

5 out of 5 stars "Survival of the streets"..........2005-03-10

I bought these two huge hardcore albums more a decade ago (LP versions...) and I still find it to be essentials of that very special musical style... "So, don't miss the occasion to get them in one CD!" Just because Cro-Mags was at his apogee during the eighties, and these guys were real... and not fake! They were talking about what they were really experiencing : pain, anger and hunger! You should see these two albums as a testimony concerning the new york city hardcore scene of that period...

1 - The Age of Quarrel : If you like oldschool hardcore, I guess you probably have this one in your possession but if you are eager to discover what hardcore meant in the late eighties (raw, fury, political lyrics and INSPIRED music!), you shouldn't ignore 'The Age of Quarrel'... All is said in fifteen 'bullets'. John Joseph is the definitive frontman of Cro-Mags. He is really mesmerizing in it. With the help of Harley Flanagan and Parris Mayhew, he delivers an astonishing performance we can hardly forgot... This album is so good that it's really hard to name the best songs... Just an example : the intro of the 'We gotta know' is simply amazing... No less than that...

2 - Best Wishes : more metal oriented and Flanagan is now singing (quite good, I have to admit). The band clearly refused to do a "The age of quarrel : the return" or "part II..." and decided to explore new musical territories with excellent results. I had some difficulties to accept it then. But now, I think it was the best thing they could have done and "Best Wishes" contains superb hardcore-metal classics... ('Death camps' is my favourite but 'The only one' is a great and touching (!) song too...

Needless to say, with these two superb albums, The Cro-Mags influenced innumerable hardcore bands around the world...

5 out of 5 stars you think all these lamers today are hard?.......2004-01-03

this is the original hardcore/metal band! this album was made specifically for people to mosh and beat the piss out of one another and spit on their lifeless body afterwards. my recommendation: do a few lines of coke, don your combat boots and find a fat girl. enjoy!
