Customer Reviews:
A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26
I can categorically say this album was the cream of Sam Cooke. The reason for saying this, is to counteract the previous comment made by A. Sturley. Sam did not change his voice for this concert. Sam was getting more mature. His voice was breaking. Which I preferred. Had he lived longer, he would'nt be too far of Bobby Womack or a more polished soul singer. Also him moving with the times, who knows how he would really sound like had he lived longer. A. Sturley, if you do not believe me,buy and listen to the album (Keep Moving On).Both albums will always make music listeners take notes. The One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club was Sam Cooke delivering at his very best!
An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17
This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.
Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.
You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!
One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12
Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.
The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21
This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!
should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19
This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!
The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.
He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!
You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.
A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.
This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.
What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.
Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

one of the best bocephus albums ever.......2006-04-26
now this is one of the best bocephus albums ever, yes the sound of country in the 70's was a raw sound and i like that sound alot, hank jr can still make good albums and still does, this is the sound of hanks i love best, daddy i need you tonight is still my favorite hank jr song, those type of songs, well the songs hank jr does about hank sr are by far my favorites by him... a fan of bocephus always, and the williams family...
Classic Hank jr Gold........2002-06-18
I own over 10 Hank jr albums and I am a very big fan of his so I know Hank's music well, so trust me when I say this is wonderful.
You can't call yourself a hank fan and not own this CD, it's the first he made under the new label and the first of the Bochepous years.
There is some really great songs on this and only one song is a let down, the song "All by myself" is not so good but with all the other strong recordings on here who cares?
I love his late 70's stuff since it had such a raw sound and..."real" sound to it.
so do buy this CD (heck the price is low as you could want so why not?).

Customer Reviews:
Awesome Hard Rock Album!!!!.......2006-12-27
One Night Stand is the best pure hard rock cd that I have had the pleasure of listening to since the classic Back in Black. It has the same energy from start to finish and is just one of those albums that you listen to all the way through. The music will remind you of some classic 80s metal while the vocals sung by the lovely Abby Gennet will captivate you. The guitar riffs are catchy and drums and bass are heart pounding. This is a great cd by band that has an unlimited future and should be at least checked out by anyone that claims to enjoy just good old fun rock and roll!!!! Rawk On!!!
Give You Love.......2006-12-22
Slunt: filthy name, sleazy music, dirty attitude. In other words, a winning combination. At a time when bands either deliberately play up their don't-give-a-damn attitude or tone down their antics for wider commercial appeal, it's refreshing to see a band genuinely being themselves. Slunt is a white trash band from the wrong side of the tracks in New York City, and they make no apologies for it.
Forget schoolboy double entendres a là AC/DC. Singer Abby Gennet has the vocabulary of a drunken sailor and the attitude of a thousand pre-menstrual harpies, and her voice has a trashy, potent sexuality to it. She has the voice which could launch a thousand obsessions. There are no subtle Riot Grrl feminist undertones here. These songs are the equivalent of a girls' night out in a too small mini skirt, drinking till you puke, kissing a biker in a dirty alleyway, and then getting up on stage to sing about it.
Sure, the initial attraction to the band for many a horny teen might be the fact that there's two chicks in the band, who aren't afraid of using their feminine, uh, charms to attract attention, but if you can get past the T and A (Pay attention! Eyes up here!) you'll notice this band can really rock. Imagine if Mötley Crüe could actually write decent songs, or if Wolfsbane had been fronted by a woman. Guitarist Pat Harrington has that easy, effortless swagger only the most confident guitarists, like Joe Perry and Malcolm Young, ever achieve.
One of the highlights of the album is the boogie feel of "Absinthe In Munich". It is the sort of song which would set dance floors alight the world over. Elsewhere, "Dirty Blonde" is a Bluesy aural strip-show. "Here To Rock" is a new take on the "Let There Be Rock/I Wanna Rock" style of song.
Some bands have it and others simply don't. Slunt are haves rather than have-nots. You won't find a better female fronted Hard Rock album than `One Night Stand' for many a day.
SLUNT Rocks! Get this CD!!!.......2006-11-17
SLUNT! ROCKS!!
Do yourself a favor, my friend. Buy this CD. I don't do reviews. I've only done one other in my life I think. But I really felt the need to do one for this CD.
I had never heard of Slunt before a couple nights ago. I went to see Paul Stanley play a show here in San Francisco. Heard that this band would be opening up. I just wanted to see Paul. Well, that changed as soon as Slunt hit the stage. It was loud. And Raw. My 4 friends and I stood there looking at each other, just smiling and nodding our heads.
They `Tore it up'. We went from wanting Paul to hit the stage to not wanting the opening band's set to end.
Charles Ruggiero (drums) Is a really clean drummer who plays with a lot of aggression, and fury. Jhen Kobran (Bass) `ruler of all things bass'.Great musician and fun to watch. An absolute cool rocker chick! Plays her A** off. Abby Gennet (guitar, vocals) Looks wonderful on stage. Also plays her A** off. Great singer. Really knows how to work a crowd. Oh yeah, and is one of the most beautiful women on the planet. And Pat Harrington(lead guitar) What a Bad A**! Such a cool dude. Great guitarist. Looks like a tough guy, but I had the opportunity to meet the band after they played, and he was exceptionally friendly, and went out of his way to talk to me. They were all friendly.
So yeah. Get this CD. It is great. Every song is amazing. Described as `post-punk b*tch metal', but it's much more. The first two days I had it I listened to the entire CD probably ten times.
I said `Get it!'

New Fan.......2006-09-21
I purchased this CD after hearing a cut on CBC radio. Melissa is a new artist in my collection and I've been listening to the CD over and over the past couple of days. It's funky, mellow, smooth, sultry, funny and more. If you enjoy listening to talented female vocalists then I would recommend this as a must try. Great "making a road-trip alone" music (if you are having to carry on a conversation with someone in the car you might miss out on the lyrics).
Much improved over 'stranded in suburbia' (4.5 stars).......2006-08-19
Let me start by saying that I purchased this album and 'stranded in suburbia' at roughly the same time. Therefore my comparison is at face value and I don't prefer one over the other simply for nostalgic reasons.
I found 'Stranded...' had several tracks that are very very poppy in that 'OC' sounding way. Not a bad thing necessarily, but certainly not a good thing either. And while the album did have some ocassional fine moments, it quickly found it's way out of my CD player after a couple of listens.
Fast forward a week later when I got 'Thumbelina...' in the mail and gave it a listen... and then another listen... and then another listen. This album is simply much better. To use a cliche, it shows maturity- she has discovered a style of music that suits her. Everything is improved- from the music which incorporates solid flavorful blues & country styles (ala Neko Case) to the production of Melissa McClelland's tangy voice, simulaneously sultry and meloncholy (Feist) this album is splendid. In fact, it may be one of the best albums of 2006. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would (of course it's not perfect), but in this case I will err high and give it 5 to encourage people to check out.
As an aside, I saw Melissa McClelland perform here on Maui with the Ladybird Sideshow. She was remarkable and everyone I was with thought so too. While this album cannot capture the pressence of her in person, it still easily holds it's own and then some...

Joe Lynn Turner was a member of Deep Purple and Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. He also issued four albums with his group Fandango. Originally released in 1978, this was their second album.
Customer Reviews:
Another solid release by Joe Lynn Turner's earliest band.......2007-03-18
I was taken aback by this release. I liked JLT's work in Rainbow, and later with Malmsteen and Deep Purple, and definitely his solo work is fantastic. I just reviewed Fandango's Last Kiss CD. That was their 2nd release from 1978. It was good, some strong material on it, just not something that's an instant classic or memorable but it'll grow on you the more you listen. One Night Stand is Fandango's 3rd release, from 1979, and it's a stronger, slightly more rocking effort. Last Kiss seemed to mix Doobie Brothers Michael McDonald with the grooving sounds of early Journey before Steve Perry joined. One Night Stand continues with the later 70's era Doobie Brothers but with a bit more Eagles edge to the music. Joe Lynn Turner sounds young, and fantastic. Songs like One Night Stand rock, Thief in the Night sounds like a radio hit single (this song was later reworked onto on of JLT's late 90's solo albums), and the ballad I Would Never Leave sounds just like it would today if JLT released it on an album, it's that good. I like this band, and I ordered the rest of their CD's (only 2 others) so hopefully they'll be just as good as this (hopefully better!). A quick fact, the guitar player in Fandango was Ritchie Blakemore! How funny, since Joe went out to work with Richie Blackmore in about 2 years with Rainbow. That is funny.

"Fatha Hines" Catches A Break.......2004-12-27
Like a lot of black American jazz musicians in the 1950s and 1960s, when playing in the U.S., Earl "Fatha" Hines was stuck performing music he was good at but didn't necessarily love to perform - in his case, after 1948 or so, mostly Dixieland standards. It paid the bills. But in 1957 he went to Europe, where he cut two albums in Paris playing the much more modern jazz he had pioneered and at which he excelled. This CD combines both records on one disc, and if you haven't heard "Fatha" Hines much, this is a great place to start. You can hear some of his signature innovations, such as a left hand that played almost recklessly with timing, acting almost like impulsive punctuation to his precision right hand. It was a departure from stride piano that influenced probably every major piano jazzman after him. You can also hear a couple selections of the Dixieland he was slotted into in the U.S. - notably, a fine version of "Muskrat Ramble" without the Dixieland band, but with plenty of strut remaining - it's different from what you might expect in this genre and very interesting. He's playing with a small ensemble on these cuts, so you won't hear examples of his big-band skills, the ones that had him playing for years with longtime friend Louis Armstrong, but you'll hear just about every other style that made him famous. He died in 1983 so when I saw this terrific compilation of late 50s pre-comeback cuts, I was delighted. Highly recommended.
A thing of beauty.......2004-11-01
I liked every track on this CD on the first play. This rarely happens. Earl Hines had an beautiful sence of melody backed up by virtuoso technique. Come to think of it so did Louis Armstrong. This is probably why these two got along so well. I find there is a lot of jazz out there that is just too complex for my liking. Often the melody is lost and so am I. Not so on this one. A bargain price for a great CD.

Opera in English.......2007-03-19
Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)
4 1/2Stars...exciting voice and singing.......2004-12-02
Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.

Album Description
Two CD's for one Soft Lights,Sweet Trumpet & One Night Stand. Both of these albums date from 1952 but represent contrasting sides of the great trumpeter and his band. Soft Lights... spotlights the velvety tone of Harry's horn, while One Night Stand is a performance at the Aragon Ballroom. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

Two sides of James.......2004-02-05
Unlike the other reviewer of this cd, I enjoy the softer side of James. Sure they are standards, but the mood is very relaxed and it DOES NOT place the James band in the easy listening category. There are many improvised moments during the solo spots. I would agree that if both of the live albums were put together, it would have made for a more logical music flow. Maybe time restrictions could not allow both of the live performances to be placed to together. Sonically, the studio performance is much better than the live one. The live recording sounds curiously dated. Not bad, but it certainly can be much better. Considering that the studio album is older by a few months and is sonically superior. The live album also contains a disppointing version of Ultra. This older version is in no way competitive to the updated arrangemet Harry would record for MGM. This version is available on a Verve cd titled, Harry James - The Silver Collection. That version, also live, is far superior to this slower version. This version lacks the energy and excitement that James had in his newer version. Sonically, it is superior too. It is in stereo with nice clean highs and full bass. Still, this is a good cd if you are a James fan.
The Two Sides of Harry James.......2002-12-24
Harry's Columbia studio recordings of the early fifties were no doubt influenced (victimized might be more appropriate) by the dominating presence of Columbia A&R man Mitch Miller -- the "sing-along" guru who almost ruined Frank Sinatra's recording career, was responsible for much of the cornball schlock that filled the radio airwaves at the time, and who, as a consequence (in my estimation), probably did more to promote the rise of rock and roll than any other single individual. In "Soft Lights", we are (no doubt at the behest if not the insistence of Miller) presented with a liberal dose of the schmaltzy ballad style for which Harry James would forever be scorned by jazz critics. Contrast this with "One Night Stand", an exciting live performance that illustrates the true dynamism that was Harry James and his band. Just listen to the fire and passion of the James horn in "Feet Draggin Blues". Or the warm, passionate (no schmaltz here) "You Go To My Head". Or Harry (on bongos, no less) in "Mam Bongo". For a change of pace, dig the brilliant accordion solo in "Flight of the Bumblebee" (Lawrence Welk need not apply). Great stuff. Alas, this CD rates no more than three stars due to the inclusion of "Soft Lights Sweet Trumpet". Had it instead been coupled with "Live At Hollywood Palladium" (another exciting live performance available on another CD that is also sadly coupled with a schlock studio session), it would have rated 10 stars!!!
