Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars Music of the Night????????.......2007-02-28

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great short version!.......2006-12-06

If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A long time favorite.......2006-08-26

This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21

I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:

1)It has the original London cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-14

I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Almost as wonderful as the first.......2007-08-02

We bought Beethoven's Wig 1 and loved it. My kids (ages 5 and 9) really enjoy listening over and over. Number 2 is almost as good. All of the songs are amusing and a couple are very funny. The lyrics are clever and do help you become familiar with composers and their music. I like that the pieces are played again in the second half without the lyrics. I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy music.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

Americano is the most significant album, start to finish, that Roger has ever written. This is not Americano but harkens to a beautiful mix of Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy and the classic Peacemaker chords. The Peacemakers are not the Refreshments: they're better.

Buy it. You'll question the direction on the first pass and love it on the second.

The Peacemakers are making the most significant, organic contribution to new rock music in America today. If you doubt it, go see a concert: anywhere. You will be amazed

2 out of 5 stars Not Giving Up Yet...but I Continue to Hope for Better.......2007-06-22

I'll admit that I am perhaps a little too attached to Honky Tonk Union, but I have really struggled to embrace the direction that Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers are going. Clyne continues to have strong chops, and the musicianship remains top notch. The song-writing, at least to my ears, has been on a bit of a decline over the last couple of albums. No More Beautiful World has a moment or two that reminds me why I became a fan, but I can't justify listening to an album front to back for a moment or two. It's understandable that bands need to evolve, but until that evolution equals or surpasses their origins, I wish RCPM could do a little more channeling or their early work.

4 out of 5 stars rcpm.......2007-06-21

not there best album but there are some good songs here. give it a listen before you buy

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2007-05-21

Don't even think about a Buffett comparison, Roger's a much better lyricist. This is a great album. Just buy it.

An amazing album, Angel Dust unfortunately has limited appeal, although perhaps "unfortunately" isn't the right word; the record's oddities are also what make it such a fascinating listen. "Land of Sunshine" is a rocker with a foot-tapping rhythm punctuated by insane laughter from vocalist Mike Patton, whose distinctive voice and frequently disturbing lyrics drive the album. To call it hard rock does Angel Dust a disservice; it's far more musically complex than such a label implies. There's the funk-influenced "Midlife Crisis," the ballad "RV" (a bitter monologue from the point of view of a middle-aged discontent sitting in his trailer), the hard-edged claustrophobia of "Smaller and Smaller," and the rock-married-to-electronic-organ "Be Aggressive," which includes positively inspired cheerleader chants on the chorus. Impossible to classify but incredibly entertaining (there isn't a single boring moment on this album), Angel Dust is well worth picking up. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars underappreciated alternative band.......2007-07-23

FNM brought an innovative and independent jam to the rock plateau. Lyrically and musically they are brilliant. A thinking-man's band.
Gotta get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh memories.......2007-07-06

There is something about this album that is able to uproot the listener and emerse them in a listening experience that is skilled and varied. This album is not for everyone, maybe not for most people even. But this is one of those albums that takes me back to my youth because it did such a good job imprinting on me. I love it. - if you like "good music" and are able to transverse genres, check it out. No matter what your taste, you'll have to give props to a band that put alot of thought into what they delivered as a whole.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2007-03-14

i finally bought this after hearing so many good things about this album. but now that i have it, i dont think its really as good as everyone says. the songs arent funny, the music is boring. the only good song is midlife crisis, and that is still medeocre at best. i dont understand why people like this album. to tell you the truth, i think mike patton sounds terrible on this album. he sounds much better in mr. bungle, and that band is just so much better anyway. the only good thing patton has done is mr. bungle. anything else by mike is not really worth listening too. i dont consider him a musical genius like many others do. there is so much more out there that is so much better than this. i find this album a waste of money. it got two stars for midlife crisis.

I have now said my two cents, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars The album that killed FNM's career...........2007-02-12

....and secured their musical legacy. The Real Thing was a solid rock/rap mixture with newly hired Mike Patton providing vocals. On Angel Dust, Patton had a lot more creative input, providing his wonderful vocal stylings and schizophrenic persona to Faith No More. It's a joyous ride that after a less than stellar performance initially, has become something of a cult classic and favorite among many newer acts - and with good reason. This album is all over the board. Land of Sunshine reads like a list of fortune cookies (which is the supposed inspiration), while Caffeine is an anthem for Patton's drug of choice, and one of FNM's most energetic recordings. Then there is the occaisonal oddball track showing Patton's range and sense of fun, like RV, which is like a melancholic rant from the stereotypical figure you might find living in an RV. Not exactly bilboard material, but fun.

Adding to the record were the internal tensions of the band. Jim Martin was having creative differences, yet pumps out some of his best work here. Tensions may have fueld a more agressive record, and FNM would never sound better than they do on this album. It's the bands chemistry - both good and bad - that make this album work. Commercially, this might have not been the hit the record company wanted, but its legacy can still be heard today and it's still a great record to crank up for a drive, barely showing its 15 year old age.

3 out of 5 stars Everything's Ruined!.......2007-02-10

Patton... His fans love him and everything he does. But to the outside world he is ultimately known for his work with Faith no more. Their album "The Real Thing" spawned a hit single "Epic", then it seemed like they dropped off the map. No they didn't drop off the map; they released an unsuccessful commercial(at least in usa) follow up called Angel dust. This album is crazier than everything they had ever released. The 1st track Land of Sunshine sounds like FNM until the chorus goes into laughing and circus music. Caffeine is one of the hardest songs on the cd and prolly one of the best lyrically. Midlife Crisis was the 1st single, which is my favorite song. RV is funny but is kinda a throwaway for me as is Be Agressive, A small victory. The two songs I just mentioned previously are chalk full of homosexual themed lyrics. Be Agressive: It's hard for me...I'll take it on my knees. You know what I won't go further into detail the lyrics to these songs in particular are gross and kinda distracting to the creativity of the music throughout the cd. There is enough good tracks like "Everything's Ruined" to almost redeem its missteps.

Faith No More are virtually impossible to categorize; they blend metal and rap elements in a mix that becomes seamless on The Real Thing, whose hit single, "Epic," is a perfect combination of these disparate genres. Other high points are the thrashy "Surprise! You're Dead!," an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the funk-layered-with-keyboards "Falling to Pieces," and the soft but spooky "Zombie Eaters." With the addition of vocalist Mike Patton, the band secured a highly talented frontman and skilled lyricist. The Real Thing is one of those rare albums that is impossible to quantify but astoundingly good. More accessible than the follow-up Angel Dust, it's also the first album new Faith No More listeners should get. --Genevieve Williams

1 out of 5 stars badly in need of re-mastering .......2007-06-19

The album itself is without question five stars. The one star is for the HORRIBLE sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars What is it?.......2007-01-10

Sure, this album has been out a long time, and it may even seem dated if you weren't born when it came out. But it's so damn good. I hadn't heard it in more than 10 years and just wanted to check it out again, to see if it really was as good as i remember. The short answer: you damn straight it's good. It's freaky-deaky! Heavy and soft, loud and quiet, chocolate and kiwis.
Go get it.

5 out of 5 stars Faith restored.......2006-12-24

In the midst of near band melt down and free for all, FNM fired their lead singer and brought in friend Mike Patton to pen lyrcis to their album that would be known as The Real Thing. Mixing Mike's love for vocal ranges and styles (everything from rapping to just rocking out like a true rock frontman) with the band's most accessible sound to date (and looking back now, THE most accessible period), FNM created a staple sound/album of the alternative scene, mixing some true music styles from rock to rap to a pre-acid like jazz sound. While some reviewers will try to sit there and say this is THE ALT ALBUM and Nirvana's Nevermind is a St. Anger for it's genre(?), FNM's The Real Thing is one of the cornerstones of the Alternative genre that evolved into Grunge (sorry but while TRT is great... Nevermind DID change an entire rock world by going back to the roots of rock that were long forgotten and bogged down by hair spray and power ballads, destorying what was left in the wake of GNR's AFD).
There is nothing much to say but Faith No More's The Real Thing is just a rocking album for the masses.

5 out of 5 stars It's still fun!.......2006-11-10

I LOVED Faith No More back in the day and owned most of their albums. My old cassette version of this got eaten in the player and I didn't replace it for the longest time. Finally got around to getting it on CD and realized how much I missed the band and the album! They were pretty groundbreaking for the time. Saw them in concert and loved them even more. I can't talk all technicla with you about styles, revolutionary sounds and whatnot, I just know what I like!

5 out of 5 stars One word, Genius........2006-09-11

This album is pure genius. The blend of music that this album has is simply out of this world. To here the totally different contrasts on the album, listen to the funk "Falling to Pieces" and to the metal and darkness of "The Real Thing". This truly a masterpiece of an album. If you like music, i recommend this album. One of the best of all time and CERTAINLY FOM's best.

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

1 out of 5 stars Stilted.......2005-12-15

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Walking the trail.......2005-08-07

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

5 out of 5 stars Superb concert.......2005-08-02

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

2 out of 5 stars Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.

In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16

Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.

However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".

With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.

5 out of 5 stars Great tunes - great lyrics - great harmonies.......2006-11-04

If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.

I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.

John we miss you.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Music.......2006-08-22

I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Larson Lives.......2006-05-06

I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Music, but i wouldnt want to see it live.......2006-04-30

I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:
30/90
Green Green Dress
No More
Sugar
Come To Your Senses (originally from Superbia)
Louder Than Words
and i also enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Anyone who's purchased one of Mary J. Blige's albums understands that the "queen of hip-hop soul" would much rather push artistic envelopes than lick 'em. With No More Drama, her enlisting of hip-hop's finest beat-makers to create lush musical soundscapes is nothing short of genius. On the Dr. Dre-produced "Family Affair," Blige implores the club set to "get crunk 'cause Mary's back" as she introduces some new slang to the hip-hop vernacular ("holleration"). "Steal Away" is a classic Neptunes-induced head-nodder in the "Love Is All We Need" vein, as Pharrell Williams chimes in a Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto. Those who like their R&B straight might be offended by the acoustic guitar solo by Lenny Kravitz on "PMS," or the album's title track, which samples the theme from The Young and the Restless soap opera. But listen to "Where I've Been" (a redemptive tale of Blige's not-so-rapid ascent from the 'hood, featuring guest raps from Eve) and the Missy Elliott-assisted "Never Been," and misgivings vanish. Whereas past Mary J. efforts were limited to tales of relationships gone awry, her outlook is more diverse and upbeat, while her scratchy, bluesy vocals have become more expansive, too. She raps on "Love," scats on "Beautiful Day," chats on the a cappella "Forever No More," and caps No More Drama with a string of uplifting ballads ("2 U," "In the Meantime"), neatly polishing off a release that will stand as one of the best of 2001. --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars Mary J. Blige.......2007-02-07

This is a great album! It's like Mary's "My Life" album where you can relate to the songs.

5 out of 5 stars ..beautiful!.......2006-12-29

I hadn't listened to this CD for a while for some reason. Boy was I missing out! This is one of, if not my absolute, favorite Mary J. albums. It is truly beatiful. Her vocals on here are wonderful, the production is great. Every single song is great!

I actually like the original version a little bit better. I would recommend finding the original and buying it along with this one. This re-release is still great and the new songs keep the quality and integrity of the album. (That is very rare with re-issues.)

I definitely recommend this, along with the original if you can find it. This is one of my all time favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars One of her greatest.......2006-07-17

I have several albums by Mary J Blije and have to say that this is by far one of her best. I am completely satisfied and happy with my purchase and would reccomend it to anyone, whether they are already a fan of hers or not. Even my father loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing Realism Back Into The R&B World.......2006-06-14

After reviewing THE BREAKTHROUGH, which besides WHAT'S THE 411? is in my opinion Mrs. Blige's true tour de force, I thought I'd give here critically acclaimed NO MORE DRAMA some love. NO MORE DRAMA prior to THE BREAKTHROUGH was her last truly great album. LOVE & LIFE was good, but it wasn't quite as good as the album before it (NO MORE DRAMA). Once again on this album, Mary J. Blige sings of heartaches and working through life's struggles. While with other R&B artists this subject matter or topic might become tired and boring, Mary always makes for a good album, even on her weaker releases, which are very few.

NO MORE DRAMA opens up bombastically with the hit though too short in duration "Love" in which Mary J. Blige asserts her role as the queen of hip-hop soul. Perhaps what the draw is here is the catchy chorus in which the background vocals say each letter in the word "LOVE" using it as an irregular acronym in a sense. Following the opening anthem is perhaps Blige's best known universal hit and her only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, "Family Affair". It is what it is, just an exceptional track with exceptional productions and seering vocals. "He Think I Don't Know" has the queen talking about a man thinking his women is stupid of what he is doing and stupid in general. While the song is long and drawn out, it is an irresistable listen. One of the real treats comes with "PMS" which uses a sample of the Al Green Soul classic "Simply Beautiful". Blige is at her most soulful. Later on, the Soap Opera theme sampled "No More Drama" is great with a hip-hop beat and painful-soul renching vocals from MJB. Finally, "Testimony" is a great, uplifting track and shows a more cheerful Blige.

Overall, this album is a production masterpiece with a number of samples and soulful hip-hop backdrops for Blige to paint with her incredibly soulful voice. Overall, it isn't the masterpiece of THE BREAKTHROUGH, but it is an incredibly strong album, period. 4 stars.
