Stevie Wonder was getting his fusion of soul, rock, and various other styles together when Music of My Mind appeared in early 1972. A bit shapeless compared with Talking Book, the masterpiece he'd release by the end of the year, this disc nonetheless finds the then-21-year-old self-assuredly deploying an array of synthesized textures and natural voices: check out the drawl lurking around the edges of "Sweet Little Girl." Not an essential album, but an entertaining one--and one that, in retrospect, carried enormous implications for the future of American music. --Rickey Wright

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

A QUANTUM LEAP FOR STEVIE.......2007-02-23
I WOULDN'T SAY THAT WITH THIS ALBUM, STEVIE WONDER CAME INTO HIS OWN, BECAUSE HE HAD RECORDED A LOT OF FANTASTIC MUSIC BEFORE THIS, BUT THIS ONE TAKES HIS MUSIC TO A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. I HAVE HAD THIS ALBUM, CASSETTE, CD, SINCE IT CAME BACK LONGER THAN I CARE TO REMEMBER. THIS ALBUM WAS THE STEPPING STONE TO TALKING BOOK AND INNER VISIONS, WHICH WERE ALSO ALL TIME CLASSIC RECODRINGS. IF I HAD TO DESCRIBE THIS CD, I WOULD SAY IT WAS THE FIRST ONE THAT REALLY FEATURED THE MATURE VOICE OF STEVIE WONDER.
An absolute beauty.......2007-02-11
Dear fellow music-lovers:
Even though some music-critics think that Music Of My Mind is inferior to Talking Book, I would urge you to take a plunge into this record.
It's Stevie at his very best. Lovely melodies, unheard-of harmonies, only the drum is out of beat once in a while. But then: this is the music they played in the 70's - it's entirely without computing, and therefore as real as the hum of beas!
Stevie is impressively inspired, at his most sensual. This record is outstanding; every song has its high moments.
I hear myself humming those tunes over and over - more than 35 years after recording.
It's a record for all time. Why don't you make it your own soundtrack?
Superwoman (Where were you when I needed you).......2006-09-14
... this song Superwoman (Where were you when I needed you)... if you don't allready know it will blow your mind.. get it
Good but not Great.......2005-08-15
Are there lots of good songs on this Cd? Yes of Course. There some songs that haven't aged at all. Most songs are great soul and R&B. Girl Blue lyrically is the best song i have ever heard, to bad he decided to play around with the synthesisers to much!
This isn't a Stevie wonder album i would start on, his others are much stronger 1-10. Some of these songs just aren't that good.
Essential.......2005-04-23
Music of My Mind is Stevie Wonder's first fully-successful recording in which he assumed complete artistic control. Recorded at the start of the 70s, when the singer-songwriter-multi-intstrumentalist was not yet 25, this suite of songs sounds remarkably fresh and relevant; and its arrangments transcend whatever changes in musical tastes have rendered so many lesser recordings from lesser artists of the day passe.
Despite its lack of any obvious hit single (the album's catchiest songs far exceed the four-minute mark), Music of My Mind is an essential recording. From the celebratory opener, "Love Having You Around" to the emotionally raw indictment of "Superwoman," to the rousing r and b shouter "Keep on Running," Wonder manages to extend and develop catchy songs into full-blown mini-epics. The shorter songs here are equally impressive: "Evil," the album's closer, is sung with such conviction, such faith, that it's difficult not to get caught up with Wonder's vision for a more healing, loving world; "Been So Long" and "Love Everything About You" are two distinct variations on romance--one moody and introspective, the other playful and light; and even a gag tune like "Sweet Little Girl," which functions in part as a powerful satire on blacksploitation, is too ingratiating to dismiss.
A must-have for any music collector.

Wonderfully American.......2007-05-14
I've had a copy of this CD for years and love it. The power and optimism of the music is really quite remarkable... regardless of who or what is actually playing here. The arrangement of Swanee is light but rich with major chord trains like you just want to go marching around the room. And American In Paris leads you on a swaying, dischordy journey the deeper you go, as the narrative begins to trade delicacy for passion. (and I love renditions where you can hear the MUSIC and the instruments don't get in the way, like four-voice midi versions of Bach which reveal the eloquence).
When I listen to this CD now, and which is most surpring to me, I hear a profound pride in America - back "before." I play it when I have people over and we put burgers on the grill. This CD is the song of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.
"Before" - OK, there is no old perfect Amercia; but I'm thinking of the time before we learned to distill petroleum into toxic pollution, before pride meant vanity and thuggery, before hate-filled invective became public amusement, and before presidents went to war because it was good for business.
A Gersh-winner.......2007-01-07
George Gershwin had a long association with the mechanical device known as the player piano. At the age of ten, Gershwin used a neighbor's pianola to teach himself how to play, by very slowly pumping the foot pedal that advanced the hole-punched rolls, and placing his fingers on the depressed keys. His parents were so impressed by his abilities they enrolled the boy in formal piano studies when he turned 13. Thus, an American genius was born.
The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range.
The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made.
Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 60:36
Interesting... but I think I'd prefer a good Gershwin interpreter.......2006-05-14
Composers are not necessarily the best performers of their own work. A songwriter's songwriter like Jules Shear or Jimmy Webb comes to mind -- surely the best representations of their songs are on other artist's albums.
This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it!
I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances.
Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing.
Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.
Gershwin's playing overated.......2006-04-09
After I heard this cd I bought Gershwin plays Gershwin on the naxos label which arn't piano rolls. Any pianist can tell that many of these rolls are heavily edited and can't be played by a pianists with two hands. On the naxos album that has some of these same songs Gershwin's actual playing doesn't sound very good. Many of Gershwins contempories such as James P. Johnson, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts and even Zez Confrey were much better pianists than he was, however they didn't have his melodic gifts as a composer. I would recommend Artis Whodhouse's
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.
The jazzy Gershwin. What a CD!!!!!!!.......2006-02-23
I got this CD as a gift. I am all for the austrogerman post- romantic music and as imagined Gershwin is not my favourite composer. I know him from his best known works such as the 'Rhapsody", the 'American' and his great songs. This CD is a treasure as mentioned from other reviewers of this site. Gershwin full of passion, his music being jazzy to the very end and that great feeling you get after a great live performance is present all over the length of this 'treasure'. No question about the presence of the music. Not to be missed

Mellifluous melodies.......2007-07-22
I've had this CD for almost ten years and it's still one of my favorite albums. This is Gordon Lightfoot's first album with Reprise after five with United Artists(later renamed Liberty)Records. The title track was a big hit and is now a classic. Here he is augmented by Randy Newman, John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful and Van Dyke Parks("Walk On By"). This album is almost entirely acoustic with one track, "Baby It's Allright" featuring drums. The only track not written by Lightfoot,"Me And Bobby McGee" became a hit for Janis Joplin. The album as a whole is a great listen with great instrumentation. When you play this album, sit back, close your eyes and enjoy the ride.
a songwriters dream.......2007-07-18
If You Could Read My Mind is probably Gordon Lightfoot's best album. I've always felt he was a master at the folky/singer-songwriter/camp fire crew. Occasionally he would let it rip and whip out some light rockers, but on this release, it's mostly a collection of songs that has a very distinct homemade feel to it. The perfect music to listen to if you live in a wooded area surrounded by trees.
I can't find much to complaint about and if you're a Gordon Lightfoot fan, you won't either. Even in the early days of his career he was pumping out one memorable song after another. He was very good at consistency. His cover of Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" is pretty awesome with a pretty dark vocal melody from Mr. Lightfoot. Some of the songs I admit repeat a bit often, such as "Cobwebs and Dust" but that doesn't interfere with the well above average songwriting. It's probably easy to get some of these songs confused with each other, but you'll be humming the vocal melodies to many of them well after the album has finished playing in your CD player. Good music.
The Master.......2007-01-06
Gordo is the master of his genre. I don't know of anyone who's had more of a genius for writing great songs in his category of music. If you love acoustical music, masterfully composed ballads, then get anything Gordon's done and you'll find it more than an enriching experience.
I truly find it odd that virtually every one of my favorite folk singers are Canadians, i.e., Joni Mitchell, Loreena McKennit. In the male category, though, Gordo reigns supreme.
Great.......2006-11-05
I bought this item becuase it was one of the results when I was searching for "If you could read my mind". I'm very glad I did, the rest of the cd is great.
It Just Wears Well.......2006-08-02
It doesn't sound dated. Sweet without being maudlin. Worth refreshing my memory from the vinyl, buying this CD. From a gentler time. If you liked Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme by Simon and Garfunkel, or the first few Peter Paul and Mary records, or Poems Prayers and Promises by John Denver, this should be around your house for feeling good, full of light and hope.
Particularly, Your Love's Return: Song for Stephen Foster, is masterful lyrically and musically. It doesn't make any 'best of' compilations, so I think you need this album too. Roses are waiting for dewdrops to fall...

Album Description
Got you on my mind is the collaboration between chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux and harmonica virtuoso/ guitarist William Galison, with whom she has toured extensively in recent years. On Ms. Peyroux's first recording since Deamland, Madeleine and William cover a wide variety of tunes, from a Josephine Baker classic through tunes made famous by Willy Dixon, Stevie Wonder and John Lennon, as well as three delightful original compositions. The accompanying musicians are stars in their own right, including Bob Dylan's bassist Tony Garnier and Saturday Night Live's drummer Shawn Pelton, and there is a delightful cameo by none other than Carly Simon. To many of Madeleine's fans, Got You On My Mind represents her exquisite singing at its most natural and unconstrained -- in an informal, musical context close to her roots and to her heart. What comes across most strongly from this CD however, is the amazing musical chemistry between these two extraordinary artists.
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-05-07
I love Madeleine Peyroux and now have all her CD's. Her voice blends perfectly with William Galison's playing. I highly recommend this selection.
Melodious Madeliene, Magnificent!.......2007-03-26
I love her relaxed phrasing and the tone and easy flow of her vocals
Wonderful Cd.......2007-03-13
This is a wonderful cd and a nice addition to my collection. I recommend it highly.
fun stuff.......2007-03-09
These musicians clearly are in synch with each other on this very good album. For fans of Madeleine, this is an example of her singing in a very relaxed style. Not quite as intense as her more mature work, yet beautiful nonetheless in a timeless manner that her voice communicates so easily. All in all, sweet harmony.
Addicting.......2007-01-03
I found that I had to play the CD over and over in the car. Haven't done that with a new CD in a long time. Made traffic seem to disappear because I just didn't care how long I was in the car.

Disappointing transfer to CD.......2007-07-01
I own both of these albums on vinyl. Since they were acquired in the 1960's, they show some signs of age and I had hoped that modern audio transfer technology might even improve the original recordings; that is certainly not the case. The Make Someone Happy tracks are the worst--distortion and fuzziness make some tracks almost unpleasant. There just doesn't seem to have been much attention paid to the final product in the transfer process. That's a shame, because We Five has always been one of my favorite groups from that era, and they didn't leave behind a lot of material. I'm sure someone could do a better job on re-mastering, but I'm not optimistic because the market may not be there.
2 great albums for the price of 1 CD........2007-03-30
After playing my vinyl copies of We Five I decided to check Amazon to see if they might be available on CD. I was pleasantly surprised to find that both albums were on 1 CD and at a price lower than many single CD's.
The sequel is not the equal.......2007-03-26
You Were on My Mind is a great album. With the exception of a couple songs--particularly Love me Not Tomorrow (first cut), which sounds amateurish and has a grating lead vocal--the choices of material, the arrangements and the performances are fresh and such a pleasure to listen to over and over, which my girlfriends and I did in the late 60's and early 70's. When I found it on CD on Amazon.com I was really excited. I had never heard or heard of the Make Someone Happy album. There are a few songs up to the standard set in the first release, but the sequel is not the equal. But, since they are both on the same CD it's yours anyway.
A great listen and a great memory.
An incredible voice with good arrangements .......2006-12-24
I listen to this CD more than any other. Although this is not one of the better known 60's recordings; it offers one of the "best" voices I've ever heard. I never tire of Beverly Bivens. How many voices can one honestly say that of? If you liked her strong, rich delivery in "You Were On My Mind", you'll love it in "If I Were Alone." Her tonal range (reportedly low tenor -> high suprano) and style difference between "High Flyin Bird" and "Tonight" is impressive; but, her ability to "range" from "richness" to brilliant clarity, has not, in my experience, been equaled. Couple this with "feeling" and "articulation", and you have a voice that's consistently interesting and pleasing. A lot of female voices came out of the sixties, and many think none were better than Beverly Bivens. To me, the others weren't even close.
This CD offers: Foke Rock, Blues, Show Tunes, Standards and a couple "Quirkies." The arrangements are nicely done. Although the re-mastering is not what it could be; the CD is well worth owning.
BEV BIVENS - simply the best.......2006-12-04
The first WE FIVE album is now 40 years old. It remains the best album of its genre still to this day. Bev Bivens singing is a gift to all of those who have become long-time addicts of this album. The album is a masterpiece that still brings chills when those haunting Broadway show tunes play. I wonder if she ever realized just how good she was?

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15
My only other experience with Charlotte Church was seeing part of a PBS special on her, where she sang songs like "Some Enchanted Evening". I actually enjoy her voice on this style of music.
I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".
If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.
It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20
I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums! I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!
Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!
La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.
Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!
Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!
The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!
The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!
All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.
It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!
Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!
I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!
Sorry Charlotte!
Charlotte Church.......2006-07-29
Love that voice!! This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.
Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07
I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.
Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.
But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'
If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.
R&B For Charlotte .......2006-05-07
If a bird can be annoying as in a Rooster Crowing in the morning, some people will like it. A dog can bark in the nights we sleep, some People will like it. A human voice so light, so vibrated within their own dimensions, people will like it, but not I. I never really saw the beauty of opera, agitating to the ears, just like a Rooster calling on it's hens. With that said, Charlotte needs to turn to Blues Rock or R&B. Yes, Boogie style Blues Rock, she has the voice for it. No matter how many here perceive Opera or know what should sound good, no opera singer could ever sing Blues without a voice and a heart for it. Not One! So why should a girl with soulful music embedded in her, do the same? I say, "it's time to really Rock Charlotte!"

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.
Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20
After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.
Excellent!.......2006-08-10
Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.
Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14
I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15
At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.
But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.
The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.
Pure delight.......2003-08-02
--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.
--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.
--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).
--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.
--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.
--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.
--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.
Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06
The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."
Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30
This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.
