This is a peculiar project. The title suggests that it's the latest collection of traditional spirituals done country style (Alan Jackson, what hath thou wrought?), which it isn't. The artists' credit of "George Jones and Friends" suggests that it's another tribute in which the master and acolytes collaborate on duets, which they don't. Actually, the spirited "Beer Run" features Jones and Garth Brooks trading verses, but the title cut, which Jones sings himself, represents his only other appearance here. The rest features artists who are mainly past their commercial prime singing songs that Jones made his own. The best performances are by those who know they can't sound like Jones and don't try, like Vince Gill's luminous "She Thinks I Still Care" and Pam Tillis's tender reading of "Take Me." Much of the rest sounds like George Jones Karaoke Night, with Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, and Sammy Kershaw all taking their best shots. It should be against the law for anyone but Jones to sing "He Stopped Loving Her Today"; Kershaw's tortured rendition sounds like he's still shaking off the dentist's Novocain. --Don McLeese

A Must Have For The True Country Music Lover.......2006-11-07

This CD is the best of the best of TRUE country music singers. These are people who when you hear them on radio, you know who you are listening to. Every cut on this CD is great and the title cut by George Jones is a wonderful song that should be heard by everyone on the radio. Sammy Kershaw's cut of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is truly beautiful considering that this song was George Jones' biggest song and has to be the most difficult for any singer to even think of re-making. But Sammy Kershaw has done the Possum proud with "He Stopped Loving Her Today." I love Pam Tillis on "Take Me" and Vince Gill does a great job on "She Thinks I Still Care." The bonus of this CD is getting the DVD on the making of this CD. Love getting a chance to see the "behind the scenes" view of how an album gets made. Thank you Category 5 for putting this fantastic tribute to George Jones together!

A shout-out for traditional country.......2006-10-17

This album is classic traditional country music performed by artists that are not "past their commercial prime", but performed by artists that country radio abandoned in their quest for the "stud or babe of the week" format that pervades country radio these days. I would much rather hear some of these artists than the one-hit-wonders that you hear on the radio. These people still have the chops and it's a pleasure to hear them perform classic Jones songs.

Another rocking hair band that doesn't rock anymore.......2004-03-12

What happend to the firehouse of the early 90s? This group went from a once hard rocking band to putting out shlock like Category 5. If you are thinking about buying this because you enjoyed their earlier albums, be prepared to be dissapointed. It's a bunch of mellow rock that I would expect to hear on a radio station in a dentist's office. A station that plays Phil Collins, Sheryl Crow, and Bryan Adams.

Is This Firehouse?.......2003-01-20

I don't know what CD most of these reviewers are listening to, but it must be different than the one I just heard. What happened to Firehouse? First off, this is easily their softest CD. I don't care about that, though. What I do care about is good songs. This CD maybe has one or two of them. "Dream" is a good ballad. It fills the power ballad thing that Firehouse has one of on every CD. "Acid Rain" is ok, I guess. The rest is all filler. It's not total crap, but it's definately not on par with their other CD's. They even have two songs that are basically country tunes on here. "I'd Do Anything" & "Arrow Through My Heart" sound like they would fit well on country radio. I am not even kidding. "Arrow...." is a decent tune, though. But, can I get a guitar solo or a decent thundering drum pound, please?!!! And what happened to C.J. Snare's voice? He was one of my favorite singers and on this CD he sounds tired and worn out. In fact, the whole band just seems like they are going through the motions here and have had it. If they keep putting out CD's like this one, they will have had it. Permanantly.

HOT HOT HOT.......2001-10-11

Firehouse was in the zone this time. No doubt about it. The songwriting is superb and this is easily their best release along with "Good Acoustics" coming in a close second. The melodies are smooth and the lyrics are better than usual. "The Day the week and the Weather" has got to be the best Firehouse song ever. "Acid Rain" and "If it Changes" are also dynamite. So good is the songwriting this time around, that you can almost forgive them for previous childish lyrics like "Rock on the radio/turn it up 'til your speakers blow!" Hey, let's be fair, they've matured a lot and these songs aren't as disposable as their early hits like "Don't Treat Me Bad". A lot of groups from the 80's are unmercifully dumped on some fairly and some unfairly. Firehouse has lasted because they have grown into something more than a product of it's time, they actually make real music. If you compare them to pretentious acts like Trixter, Mr. Big, and Lillian Axe, you can see why they have out-lasted their competetion. Some not familiar with this genre often compare bands like Firehouse to Bon Jovi which is not a fair comparison. Bon Jovi while musically competent, doesn't have the songwriting talent that Firehouse does. It's a shame their bass player quit after this album because I think he brought a lot to the band's sound. His absence is sorely apparent in their follow-up CD "O2". To summarize, if you are recently discovering or re-discovering Firehouse you'll be pleasantly surprised. They have come a long way and I hope they continue to make real music.

Weather permitting, an ultimate listen..........2001-10-10

To date, this has to be one of the bands best efforts. Sure, it's a bit lighter than usual, but it still kicks. Firehouse has been an amazing quartet since the release of their debut album in 1990. They have only got better with time, and this album help to showcase that. From the start of "Can't Stop The Pain," right through to "Life Goes On," which is followed by a bonus track titled "To Get To Know You," this album truly stands out. C.J. also stands back and allows a fellow band member due to lead on the bonus track! The success of this disc in North America pales in comparison to other countries, due to the lack of support for it here. Stand-outs, aside from the entire disc itself include "I'd Do Anything," "Acid Rain," and "Have Mercy." If you're a fan of the band or the era know as "hair bands," this is a MUST HAVE. If you're a fan of great melodic rock, this is a MUST HAVE. Simply put, if you're a fan of music period, this disc is a MUST HAVE.

Most Under rated band in America.......2001-06-06

This band is truly the most overlooked band anywhere. Forget the hairband mentallity, just listen to their music and how it has progressed. I suggest to anyone who likes harder rock or accoustic music and even well written lyrics to buy all of there cd's. "I am here for you" off of Firehouse 3 and "the day, the week and the weather" off of Category 5 are their best. The new album 02 is simply fantastic. Hey Big Label Record Companies, You are defenetly missing the boat on these guys.

Great classic country!!!.......2007-04-01

Excellent selection of country-country [with the emphasis on the first "country"], i.e., no pop music. The ballad "One Step at a time" is perhaps my favorite; also the "fun" songs are very good, such as Tennessee Girl, Honky Tonk Boots, Baby's Got her Blue Jeans On, and Cantaloupes on Mars. Plain old country, that rocks you off your feet or gets you singing along, and definitely, if you are in your blues, or feeling down and out, lifts you off and makes you feel good about yourself. All in all, a very good buy.

Sammy Sings Again.......2007-01-11

It has been a long time for Sammy to be out of the spotlight. I used to enjoy him and missed some of his humorous songs. This is a good album for him and he stays pretty much with what he sings best. I liked it and it is more upbeat than downbeat. If you are a Sammy fan you will like it.

Prime Cuts: One Step at a Time, Evangeline, Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On

Donned with a George-Jones vocal fedora, Kershaw has an in-born country credibility that one can't help but think country whenever he sings. However, rather than finding asylum as Jones' clone, Kershaw has carved his own niche with his brand of contemporary pop-country with an occasional toss of novelty thrown in (a la "Queen of the Double Wide Trailer," "Your Tattoo" and "National Working Women Holiday.") However, the lack of promotion and cycle of mediocre singles have had left Kershaw without the support of a major label since the turn of the millennium. "Honky Tonk Boots," is Kershaw's sophomore CD released on an independent imprint. This time being released on the enterprising Category 5 Records which also umbrellas artists such as Travis Tritt and Craig Hand. Despite, being released on a tighter budget, producers Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson, have bent over backwards in helming a product that's vacuously superior boasting cuts written by some of Nashville's most sought after scribes including Craig Wiseman, Bob McDill, Bob Dipero, Jeffrey Steele and Tim Mensy.

Famed writer Bob McDill (writer of Alan Jackson's "Gone Country" and Alabama's "Song of the South") has a whopping three cuts here and they are this CD's apogee. "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," a former number 1 hit for Mel McDaniels, is a sensuous trump card with an infectious melody that easily resides in the memory bank after a few listens. The second McDill entry, albeit a newly composed, is the Cajun-spiced romper "Evangeline" that is punctuated throughout by some toe-taping mandolin. While "High Society," this time finding McDill teaming with Dickey Lee, is Kershaw's version of Garth Brooks' "Friends in High Places," giving some well-deserved kowtow to the blue-collars.

When it comes to the ballads, Tim Mensy's "One Step at a Time," is regret-laden 3/4 lament finding Kershaw radiating a Jones-like ache that's sure to square with the heart. "The Battle," on the hand, deals with domestic unrest framed by some mournful sounding steel guitars. However, not everything works, lead single "Tennessee Girl," despite being written by Craig Wiseman and Bob Dipero, is a nondescript uptempo love ditty surrounded by a hot messy of a production. And "Mama's Got a Tattoo" (that's in the shape of America) is a far too desperate attempt at patriotism and social justice that turns around biting itself as trite. Much better in terms of upbeat numbers is Danny Mayo's Caribbean-tingled scorcher "Cantaloupes on Mars" --- a catchy kiss-off by Kershaw to his no-good paramour vowing that he'll never go back to her "even if there were Cantaloupes on Mars."

Overall, "Honky Tonk Boots" testifies to the still commanding voice of Kershaw that breathes and nuances country music at its best. With a set of mostly well chosen songs, this is a vast improvement from some of Kershaw's lackluster latter Mercury CDs. And with the number of "older" artists resuscitating again vis-à-vis independent albums, this shoulders as one of the better ones without given to any indications of inferiority. The boots that Kershaw wears still encase footprints of greatness to come.

Sammy Kershaw is back!.......2006-06-30

If you loved some of the early music that Sammy Kershaw did, then you will LOVE his new release, Honky Tonk Boots. The first song on the CD (as well as the new single), "Tennessee Girl", is the kind of fun true country song that is not getting played on country radio. All the songs on this CD have the true country song that is missing on radio these days...none of that "Pop" sound here. Some other great songs on this CD are the title cut "Honky Tonk Boots"--another tap your foot fun song, "Mama's Got A Tattoo"--love the way Mama shows her patriotic feelings, and "Cantaloupes On Mars"--this song is just GREAT. The ballads on this CD ("One Step At A Time" and "The Battle") are just fantastic country ballads! But my all time favorite song on this CD is "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" the old Mel McDaniels' song that Sammy Kershaw does justice! Great to here this old song!!

So go and get this great CD! You will not be disappointed!
