Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Funk-rock-jazz classic! .......2007-06-27
This was, of course, Prince's breakthrough album, packed with huge hits: two #1's ("When Doves Cry", a bassless dance track; sterling funk-rocker "Let's Go Crazy"), one #2 (the slow, moving title track), and another Top 10 hit to boot ("I Would Die 4 U", Messianic but catchy), as well as the infamous "Darling Nikki" (which transcends "sexually suggestive") that spurred friggin' Tipper Gore to start the PRMC (an insult to everyone who believes in freedom of speech).Needless to say, it was huge -while I wasn't around during the decade, I think it was an '80s pop culture touchstone and certainly the album that made Prince a household name. It's also quite creative - check the bizarre ending to "Darling Nikki", which sounds like they chopped up and rearranged tapes or the one-ma nfunk-rock jam "Computer Blue". Add that to Prince's guitar, bass and keyboard playing everywhere (only Eddie Hazel is a better funk-rock guitarist) - particularly his guitar soloing on "When Does Cry"; "Computer Blue" and the title song. He's possibly the most talented multi-instrumentalists of our time, though Eric Dolphy and Brian Jones are stiff competitors. Topping it off is "The Beautiful Ones", a personal favorite of mine - it's one of the most intense, cathartic songs I've ever heard. So much for my perception of the '80s being totally soulless. Anyway, my only complaint - and a small one at that - is "Take Me With U" - not a bad song, but disarmingly sunny. Doesn't at all fit in with the rest of the album. Still, if this isn't his best album, it's second to Dirty Mind. (Oh, almost forgot the party song "Baby I'm a Star" - yet another standout song, the most traditional funk song here).
prince fan.......2007-05-24
i love purple rain that and still is the best movie and soundtrack. i love darling nikki and beautiful ones. i love this movie. the other two movies was ok. prince is still sexy with the hip huggers and heels. no other man can wear that and be sexy. he is still handsome after all these years. i have been listening to prince since the 70's when he first came out. to all the fans purple rain was the movie of the decade. i love under the cherry moon also.
Greatest Album!.......2007-04-12
I love Prince and the movie Purple Rain, so naturally I would get it. The cd is worth every penny, I love every song on the ablum. It's truly one of those albums where you can listen to the entire thing without having to skip over songs you don't like which is rare. I recommend this cd to all Prince fans and Purple Rain lovers.
Prince Reigns!.......2007-03-30
What a great soundtrack...brings me back to the age of 14, but who cares! The songs that were not overplayed on the radio are even better than the ones that were, but "When Doves Cry" will always be a fave no matter what - add it to your collection!
Start to finish one of the best albums of all time!.......2007-03-10
What can I say that the other 166 reviewers already haven't?
One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.
My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.
Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.
Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

If film and music fans sometimes wonder why soundtracks are often little more than pastiches of past pop hits and chart flavors of the moment, it's largely due to the blockbuster success of releases like this collection from 1987's surprise Patrcik Swayze/Jennifer Grey romantic hit. The film's retro-romantic concerns came shrewdly wrapped in a (largely manufactured) dance craze conceit tailor-made for such pop chestnuts as the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," the Zodiacs' "Stay," and the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night." Mickey and Sylvia once again argued that "Love Is Strange"--if not quite as strained as Swayze's own attempt at balladry, "She's Like the Wind." Eric Carmen's "Hungry Eyes" showcased the former Raspberries leader to good effect, but the real soundtrack sweepstakes winner here was the Jennifer Warnes/Bill Medley duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." That performance not only won the Best Original Song Oscar the following year, but became one of the era's most performed songs and a ubiquitous radio staple. --Jerry McCulley

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song gets caught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.
Note that this two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

ITS a DREAM the Dreamgirls Sound track.......2007-08-04
For those people who loves the musical pictures, this is the most powerfull soundtrack I ever bought. Te performances of Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Hudsun are AMAZING!!!!. Its like you are seen the picture, just AMAZING!!!
"You Will LOVE This CD!!!".......2007-06-27
I just got my CD and I love it... My favorite songs is Listen, I am Changing and Of course the NO.#1 HIT--"I'm telling you I'm not going"
Just Purchase it and you will not be disappointed.!!!!!
Your Goin' To Love this!.......2007-06-20
I was very sceptic about this adaptation. I was very dissapointed in Evita when they chose populairty over talent. I am a fan of Madonna and Beyonce but the performance by Beyonce is amazing.
In answer to T.T.'s remarks. RENT THE MOVIE! Gosh, a movie cost 4 bucks at the rental store. And there is very little talking. Most f the songs are like they are in the movie. But anyways...
THe performance is atstounding. I think that this album goes right up there with The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz and Chicago (never seenthis one, too young).
The songs are movig and the add ons are amazing. Listen is my Favorite, but more of that latter.
The Performances:
Beyonce- Beyonce was born to be Deena. Infact she mirrors Denna a whole lot (see Wikipedia - Destiny's Child). She delivers a superb performance, better that the original Bway Deena. Dreamgirls is phenominal.
Jennifer Hudson - Well what can I say but SIMON COWELL YOU WERE WRONG! And as she sings in I am Changin' AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP[HER]
Anikki Nonni Rose - Sorry if I spell her name wrong, but it is very odd. Honey if there was n unsung heroe of this film it would be her. Her phenominal and most of the time hilarious performance is what adds character to the film. Esp. when they brake Jimmy up with them she delivers a hilarious speech.
Eddie Murphie - Wonderful, Who knew he could sing.
Jamie Fox - GREAT!
Best Songs:
Move - Amazing! Wonderful beat. And SHAKE IT ON!
Cadilac Car - Wonderful song, esp. If you have a crappy car or a real Cadilac car
Steppin' To the bad Side - WONDERFUL, BEST SONG OF THE WHO MOVIE
I Love you I Do-lovely
Dreamgirls-Just hair raising
IT's All Over - Cuss a lot, I know, but amazing adittude though. Don't let little ones listen to this one.
And I am Telling You I'm Not Going - Just bye the CD for this song. I can't put in words the emotions in this song.
I Am Changing- Beautiful
Effie Sing my Song-Not in the movie but amazing
One Night Only- great
Disco version- great, but would have loved the wooshing like in the movie. A little too long, but when you see the extended version you will get the longer version and think WHY DID THEY CUT IT????!?!?!?
Listen - AMAZING SPECTACULAR! SUPER! IENIBOIWEBWEJKFDIVLEFB!
Dreamgirls Finale - " " (same as above)
Family (End Credits)- Better than the ordinary version for reasons I can't explain.
1 Dissapointment:
When I first saw you was a gereat song in the film, but in the original cast it was after Dreamgirls (To Sig. that Deena and Curtis were Together)
and it was reprised with an argument about Deena's Dreams. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS! but they cut out Deena and the purpose of the song was lost, but it is still wonderful.
My Only Thin is Get the Orginal Bway Cast and this CD. The Orig. Bway cast has a cool One Night Only Too. Try Them both. They have diff. textures, but are both truly amazing.
Ok.......2007-06-03
Apart from Beyonce singing Dreamgirls, this album doesn't bring much. It's a dud. Most of the songs are just a lot of talking not actual singing. The movie was good, and I think it's better to watch that and listen to the songs. Unlike the soundtrack "Casino", which I can listen to and enjoy without seeing the movie, I can't with this. they should have done what most movies do and pick a bunch of great oldies by other artists back in the day to create the movie/soundtrack. and i'm also very sick of Jennifer Hudson. sure she can hit high notes, but she only sounds like she's screaming. her voice is not appealing. i rather listen to Beyonce's voice any day; it's easier on my ears. i also don't like how she's so arrogant and ungrateful to Idol. i don't think she's going far with that kind of stink attitude. it just shows you're a sore loser.
Quite forgettable.......2007-05-15
I've had this CD for several months now and I hardly ever listen to the music. I'm surprised how uninteresting it is to me. Yes, there are some good musical moments on this CD and Jennifer Hudson can sing, but she also screams too much, in my opinion, and I think she was extremely overrated in this performance. I just don't love listening to her sing on this CD.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!
afterglow.......2007-03-27
delivered in good shape and timely. and I love the cd its great music.
Another great CD from Sarah McLachlan.......2007-02-20
I particularly enjoyed this CD - as inspired an endeavor as Mirrorball.
love it.......2007-02-15
I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.
Classic Sarah.......2007-02-06
I can listen to this CD over and over and still find it refreshing and beautiful. Sarah's songs are soothing to my soul.

Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme ("Misirlou"), for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although that sound runs throughout the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog from the movie), this is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs. I don't know how it all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the same for the interwoven stories in the movie). Where else are you going to find Chuck Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang, Urge Overkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield, and the Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD player and stayed there for weeks and months thereafter. --Jim Emerson

Tarantino knows his music.......2007-08-05
It's a safe bet that the Soundtrack to any Tarantino movie won't disappoint, and Pulp Fiction delivers. In addition to reviving the career of John Travolta, the movie resurrected many classic songs: Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie", Dusty Springfields, "Son of a Preacher" and the Statler Brothers, "Flowers on a Wall" were invigorated by the movie.
With classic lines from the movie spliced in ("In France, it's a Royale with Cheese") it brings back the best of the movie. Certainly a great CD for the car CD player when the movie's not available.
Where's Wray?.......2007-04-16
I can't say anything about this soundtrack that hasn't been said a hundred times. The known songs are great and the surf songs are better. I just wonder why Tarantino didn't include Link Wray's "Rumble" that is played in the background during the Jack Rabbit Slims scene. It is such a great song, it would have put this soundtrack over the edge.
The soundtrack is better than the film..........2007-04-03
I like this soundtrack a ton. Surprisingly, despite the fact that I love films, I rarely buy soundtracks. I only buy them if I dig the music. This is one of the few soundtracks I have, and I play it quite a lot. I think Tarantino is an overrated filmmaker, but his choice of music here is excellent. I really like the Chuck Berry song You Never Can Tell, and I really love Miserlou, the theme of Pulp Fiction. Son of a Preacher Man is a bonafide classic, and I dig Jungle Boogie, which is superior to Kool and the Gang's awful Celebration song. This soundtrack is better than the film.
Still Tarantino's best.......2007-03-13
PULP FICTION is a movie replete with coarse language and violence. The soundtrack album accurately reflects that film. In particular, on track #1, Honey Bunny's exclamation prior to "Misrilou" is not for the faint of heart. Be advised that this CD is definitely NOT for the easily-offended.
The PULP FICTION soundtrack is a unique mix of primarily surf music, with a sprinkling of funk, pop and country. If you enjoyed the movie, this album is sure to please. Just don't play it for your grandmother!
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 41:28
I recommend this soundtrack........2007-03-09
Even if you aren't a big fan of the movie, the Pulp Fiction soundtrack is a must-have for music lovers of all types. It's especially enjoyable if you like the movie.

Italian Amercans--a must buy.......2007-07-28
As an USAF Air Attaché, I played this music at many a dinner party with a surprising amount of interest and positive comments from my foreign colleagues--often asking for copies of the music.
As a child of the 60's, these songs resurrected long-lost memories of great Italian music that was at one-time almost prevalent in the entertainment industry. I am proud that our culture produced these great songs, hope you are too! I still often listen to this music at dinner while enjoying a glass of great Italian wine.

This was a great cd. it came on time and was as promised in good condition. I would recomend the seller again.
Terrific!.......2007-05-30
I bought this CD because I missed listening to the music my grandfather played. This CD brought back a flood of memories for me. Wonderful compilation of my favorite italian classics.
So-So CD.......2007-04-06
This is more cafe style but still worth listening to.
Great dinner background music.
This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26
We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).
While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.
Could have gone to the library for this one.
Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

Do You Remember!.......2007-07-29
Dimitri's best work in some time. A refinement of his classic Latin Jazz style; he really calls out to all who enjoy the best of that Mid Century Modern "Love Boat" Lounge and Disco Style. You can really hear the Greats like "Shirley Bussey" brought out in such an updated magnificence .
Needless to say, I have followed this truely gifted Artist since the beginning of his career in the States and this wonderful compilation really takes you finally on that journey through the craft and evolution of his grasp of the genre.
If you want to become reaquainted with his work or are a seasoned fan of the first "French Revolution" in music please check out the 2nd CD of "Disco Forever".
dj dimitri transports the love boat into the new millenium!!!.......2007-07-25
all hats off to the chairman of the world of underground disco!!! i always knew dimitri had some rare stuff to offer all of us music lovers, but i did not know his disco crates ran this deep!! dj dimirti brings us some songs that i ain't never even heard before, even though i can say that hearing these tunes makes me think i've actually heard them before, lol!! scuh standout tracks include "summertime", "little high things", "disco village", "the girl from ipanema", and what is now becoming my favourite track of all on this compilation, "again", the perfect kind of disco duet with deep male bass 'lou rawls/barry white' type vocals and the most magnificent groove i've ever came across!! there's 2 cd's worth of these gems, so this should make good music to listen to at a social get together, so hop aboard this fancy and elegant love boat full of love, passion, music , and dancing, it's a grown folks cruise you wouldn't want to miss!!
Cocktail Disco is the Perfect Love Music for One's Daily Vacation Get-away.......2007-07-22
This is both ultra classic, i.e, the Girl from Ipenema and Summertime, but the versions are an enchanting remix of a disco beat and lounge, with those so beloved lyrics - and that is not even the best of the two discs.
Dimitri from Paris obviously has selected the most happy and enchanting selections from his personal collection. It is pure love anad heavenly disco. It transcends the decades and makes the love boat come alive. If there is a rave in heaven, this would be playing on the turntables. This music makes you move, puts a smile on your face and is the happiest music heard.
Go on vacation just for this CD - I did- and then relive it on the morning commute.
Cocktail Disco.......2007-07-07
A fantastic collection, easily the equal of Dimitri from Paris' best disco compilations. Feel good music.
"Greetings ladies and gentleman, welcome to the wonderful world of Cocktail Disco.".......2007-06-24
This 22 track, double CD showcases a special sub genre of disco music that in its heyday may have been referred to as "Slease", but now Monsieur Dimitri the king of disco has coined a new name for it in which it will forever be known now to the world as "Cocktail Disco".
Dimitri from Paris (DFP) is no stranger to disco and anyone who has been following his career knows that he is possibly the number 1 de facto leader or ambassador to this genre of music post its rise and fall in the late 1970's. Not surprisingly he continues to favor and deeply supports the genre faithfully, this album is a true testiment to that note.
"And what does Cocktail Disco refer to you may ask?... Rich orchestrations, a touch of Latin influence, the ubiquitous 4/4 Disco beat, and rather over the top vocals... Maybe some would find it Cheesy, I would rather say cheeky and glamorous, something that would be fit for a Broadway musical show."
His two album releases from the "Defected in the House" label showcase the music side he is known for spinning when he is in a live event club space. Here Dimtri returns to the major indie London based DJ label "BBE" in which he also has two prior album releases with. DFP with this record label is oriented with his disco loving side (Both prior albums have disco in the title "Disco Forever" and "The Kings of Disco"). Contrary to what all previous albums were like, this one is different in the fact that it is unmixed but rather compiled. He chose to unalter any of the music to keep them true to their original sound. All the tracks are their full-length versions however and even though they are not mixed or original compositions, they still are very much Dimitri and each song rings his name loudly.

Subtlety is both a blessing and curse for Robert Cray. In the studio, his increasingly restrained arrangements have served to frame his growing mastery of classic Memphis soul, allowing his soaring, vibrato-rich voice to carry tunes that directly echo the Stax years. That can work well live, too, and does so here in "Phone Booth" and the funky distillation "Back Door Slam," an ode to sexy down-home belters like Little Johnnie Taylor. But too often Cray downplays his incendiary guitar abilities on stage, which makes long numbers like "The One in the Middle" interminable, and leaves this two-disc live set--recorded during a week of shows opening for Eric Clapton at London's Royal Albert Hall in May 2006--full of cold spots. Things heat up whenever Cray picks up his Stratocaster in earnest, whether he's plucking out fat, singing notes à la Albert Collins in his radio hit "I Guess I Showed Her" or weaving a slow, soulful path through the bridge of the ballad "The Things You Do to Me," using his whammy bar and unpredictable variations on the melody to conjure shades of introspection. Overall, this set will please Cray's die-hard fans, but is unlikely to lure new listeners. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-04-18
Dont like his politics, but love his music. Good to finally get a live CD.
Increasingly dull.......2007-04-04
I saw Robert Cray on this tour and have seen him more than 10 times. We just him opening for Clapton last month. Sadly, his live shows get duller every year. He seems to be stuck playing these mid-tempo songs from his playbook that just aren't that interesting. Phone Booth and Our Last Time are slowed down to the point where they have lost whatever charm they once possesed. Songs such as Bouncin Back, Consequences, Picture of a Broken Heart, or Survivor would have made a much stronger playlist.
There are some bright lights on this album: I Was Warned and Time Makes Two are riveting and intense. It is time for Cray to get some new collaborators as he and his longtime band have settled into a deep and somnambulent rut.
There are many better ways to enjoy Cray's music than this. I strongly recommend Strong Persuader and I Was Warned as the best ways into his songbook.
marvelous.......2007-03-23
Refer to my first review of the Robert Cray Band. There is nothing to add.
Amazing.......2007-03-15
I saw him first on Eric Clapton's Guitar Festival and was blown away. This CD is another amazing performance live and the man is brilliant. Not a real blues fan until now but his guitar work can change your mind. His band is top notch too, never thought I could groove to an organ before.
Love this album bought two, one for a friend, you must share this man.
Highly recommend it.
Editorial review?.......2007-03-04
This isn't a review of the album, it's a review of Ted Drozdowski's (?) editorial review. I just heard Cray open for Clapton in Dallas a few nights ago. I didn't hear Cray downplaying his "incendiary" guitar abilities on stage, either in this album or the recent concert, as Drozdowski contends. B.B.King says he plays in "sentences." Cray is similar--but with longer, more complex sentences. Still, though, sentences. The contrast was startling when Clapton came out and played his melodic paragraphs. Neither is better. They're the unique voice of the respective artist. Cray is so smooth that the transition from vocal to guitar solo is seamless. He's always "incendiary," but it's often a slow burn.
Oh, and BTW, Cray doesn't have a "whammy bar." He plays a Strat with a hard-tail bridge (i.e., no tremelo).

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

Nice CD.......2007-07-15
This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.
Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22
I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.
relaxation.......2007-05-13
This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.
amazing.......2007-05-07
Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.
Talented violinist.......2007-03-29
When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

The "Theme from Shaft" is now so ingrained in popular consciousness as the blaxploitation-movie track that it's hard to listen to it without a faint smirk. ("Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?"!!) But if you can get past the inadvertent humor, it's still a devilishly exciting piece of music--all hi-hat 16ths, wah-wah guitar, strings, and woodwind, like a Norman Whitfield Motown production taken to a baroque extreme. The rest of the album consists mainly of incidental mood music of no great worth: "Walk from Regio's," "Ellie's Love Theme"--you know the sort of thing. Only two other tracks feature the Black Moses pipes, while the endless "Do Your Thing" takes its place in the catalog of Hayes epics that began with Hot Buttered Soul. --Barney Hoskyns
Album Description
Of the many wonderful blaxpoitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists. With the Theme From Shaft, Hayes delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. Soulsville operates effectively as the sort of down-tempo ballad Hayes was most known for, just as the almost 20-minute Do Your Thing showcased just how impressive the Bar-Keys had become, stretching the song to unseen limits with their inventive, funky jamming. This CD features cinematic moments of instrumentation, composed and produced by Hayes while being performed by the Bar-Kays - some down-tempo, others quite jazzy. A Stax records
Customer Reviews:
A Groovy Soundtrack album for a groovy movie!!.......2005-12-31
This Shaft soundtrack album from 1971 is obviously one of the best selling albums ever in the history of American music (and, I believe, one of the best selling albums released by Stax Records back then). This title made Isaac Hayes (aka "Black Moses") a mega superstar upon its release, due to the title theme, which is the first track on this album. It has an unforgettable intro sound, and the song lasts for barely over four and a half minutes, with Isaac's vocals lasting only for about one minute (or slightly more) halfway through the song. He only sang on three of the songs on this album (the title theme, "Soulsville", and "Do Your Thing"), with the remaining twelve songs being instrumental incidental music from the movie. Some of the other songs on this album are quite good. "Bumpy's Lament", "Shaft's Cab Ride" (which only lasts barely over one minute), "Ellie's Love Theme" (with its soft, easy listening sound that sounds like a song to slow dance to), "Soulsville" (this one containing a sax), "Early Sunday Morning", "Shaft Strikes Again", and the funky track, "Do Your Thing" (which is the longest song on the soundtrack album, clocking in at almost 20 minutes) (!!) and "The End Theme", which is almost two minutes long, playing at the closing credits of the movie. This is the album to get. I first heard the "Shaft" theme years ago when I was little (on a 45 that my mother had years before, not on the soundtrack album), and I consider it the first Stax recording that I listened to. I got the movie for my 24th birthday (in April, '04), and really liked it a lot. Before I got the movie for my birthday that year, I had never seen it ever on TV; not even on the Encore channel! I only knew the title theme and some of those other songs that I mentioned before I got the movie. It is really incredible and quite enjoyable. I highly recommend seeing the movie and getting this album, if you have not already done so. Very groovy! Kudos to Isaac Hayes for his wonderful voice and a good job that he did singing on this album!
But,,I'm talking about Shaft.......2004-11-13
One of the best soundtracks to come out of the 70s, if not the best was Isaac Hayes'Shaft' soundtrack. With the academy award winning 'Theme from Shaft'.I still remember seeing him performing the song at the awards show on tv. Isaac Hayes recorded Shaft during his best creative years. So what makes Shaft so special? Well to answer wy own question.Shaft is a blend of funk, smooth jazz (before it was called smooth jazz) soul and rhythm & blues. And it all comes together to produced the Isaac Hayes sound.Very few artist have manage to bring together both film and sound like Isaac Hayes did with the Shaft soundtrack. You find yourself enjoying the music just as much as the movie. Before Shaft Isaac Hayes was best known for working his magic with other people's material like 'Buy The Time I Get To Phoenix,Our Day Will Come and The Look Of Love etc, etc, etc. But Shaft if I'm not mistaking was Isaac Hayes first whole album of his own original music. And he rose to the challenge.I think Shaft gave Mr.Hayes an opportunity to record songs that weren't a part of his normal routine. And this gave us songs like Ellie's Love Theme,Early Sunday Morning and Shaft Strikes Again.Just to name a few on this great album. So thanks to Shaft we got to hear these gems.Yes Shaft is a fantastic soundtrack it's Isaac Hayes at his best and I highly recomment it.After thirty-five years the music still sounds good. The only downside to the album to me is the length of Do Your Thing. Why so long? I don't know why Isaac Hayes made it so long.Maybe he needed to fill in some space.Well I guess I'll go and watch the movie Shaft on my DVD player now.
Ikes a bad mutha-.......2004-01-18
By 1971 Ike was a big name in the R&B world. On his 1969 debut `Hot Buttered Soul' he had changed the game with his genius and innovation. However his two follow up albums had only shown flashes of the brilliance he flaunted so effortlessly on his debut.
Nevertheless much like Curtis Mayfield with `Superfly', being recruited to provide a film score (In this case Richard Roundtrees awesome Shaft) seemed to unlock the door to a hidden world of inspiration inside Ike's mind.
Everybody knows the distinctive and tongue in cheek title theme which these days seems to epitomise everything 70s. The remainder of the album is largely scene-related instrumentals and mood music that never stops being pleasing on the ear. The other two vocal cuts are the jazzy `Soulsville' and the mammoth `Do Your Thing'. In its 3 minute radio edit form `Do Your Thing' is a classic hard fonk number, however, the album version is dragged out to no less than twenty minutes(!), largely by an overly long electric guitar solo. Whereas previous extra length songs by Hayes had justified every second of their playing time, for once Ike seems to be doing it purely for the sake of it. Still it's a good tune and other than that its difficult to find fault with this album, which was a major hit and sealed Ike's name in history forever.
One of those Must Own type records.
Nothing Better!!.......2003-12-08
Simply put, the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. No other soundtrack has seemlessly tied together a storyline, mood and the time it was released. It's a lyrical painting of urban America in the 70s. And the opening cymbal/wah-wah guitar combo has NEVER been matched. Think about it. What other classic is immediately recognizable within the first five or ten seconds?? I'm a white, suburban, 42-year-old guy who grew up on great music like this. I just wish American youth (white and black) would be more exposed to guys like Issac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Al Green instead of the hip-hop garbage that passes today as urban/soul. They could learn a thing or two about arrangements and composition too!!
A Classic Soundtrack.......2003-11-30
And just a classic recording, period. I love every track. My favorite track has to be "Soulsville". I have listened to this recording all the way through three or 4 times in succession. That's how good it is.
