redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Customer Reviews:
(3+Half) Its fairly comfortable in DADDY'S HOME........2007-04-03
This is an album that I found abit frustrating at times and exceptional at others. The main problem for me was the most irritating voice of any mc Ive ever heard in over 15years of listening to hiphop, Big Scoob, who appears on no less than 4 tracks and completely ruins them. He's better known as one half of Kane's dancers Scoob+Scrap and he really should have stuck to just that. The ironic thing is Ive never really found him as annoying on Kane's other albums, ah well... The good points however far outweigh this minor negative point. The production from Kane, Easy Moe Bee, L.G., Kool T, Da Rock and the one+only DJ Premier is all top notch. The rhymes from Kane are what we've come to expect, sharp, original, witty and skilled like no other. Unfortunately he sings abit in the middle of his flows, even though he does that on his other albums he just overdoes it at times here. Apart from that his flow is flawless. Tracks like "Daddy's Home", "Lyrical Gymnastics", "Thats How I Did'em", "The Way Its Goin'Down", "W.G.O.N.R.S." and "Let Yourself Go" showcase his lyrical prowess expertly. "Lyrical Gymnastics" and "The Way Its Goin'Down" in particular are Kane at his peak, breathtaking. Both "Sex According To The Prince Of Darkness" and "Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed" are were his smooth sexcapes come out to play to great effect. Apart from Scoob's verses in tracks like "In The PJ's" and "Show N Prove" they are also decent tracks that enhance then album. Overall its not as consistent as his "Veteran's Day" and "Looks Like A Job For...." albums but its still a nice+necessary addition to the Kane collection.
the most underrated classic out of 94.......2003-03-18
When the first time i bought this album, i didn't what i'm going to hear, cuz i never heard Kane's rap before. Every songs in this album were well handled except the skit which is allright at the first time hear but you don't want take more after. You'll find a lot of gems that's includes an allstar collabo produced by Primo in "Show and Improve" featuring Big Scopp,Sauce Money,Shyheim,"Mr.Strickly out from a Brooklyn Zoo" ODB, and up and coming Jay-Z. The last two names steal the show, each with their distinctive style. Nice to hear young Jay-Z fast rap, it's added a fresh flavour on the track, and ODB crazy as usual and he even borrowed his lines in this track on other WU-mate production (RZA's Kiss of The Black Widow). The other songs was tight both musically and lyrically every song take you into another trip on Kane's world eventhough it's released almost 10 years ago, the beat never sounds old and the lyrics still relevant on today. This album improve that Kane still one of best MC to count in the middle of 90's beside handfull of new comers and golden era of gangsta rap.

Album Description
Shoes were pop classicists in the manner of the Beatles & the Raspberries, and if their low-tech recording setup dictated a leaner and more basic approach than the Fab Four, the thick guitar lines, smooth backing harmonies, and trickier-than-they-sound me
Customer Reviews:
Milestone DIY indie-power pop release.......2005-08-09
Though they'd recorded a few earlier self-distributed releases, and would go on to record for Elektra, this album is ground zero for understanding and enjoying the band's unique take on DIY power-pop. An initial single on Bomp had its renown magnified when this self-distributed album was picked up by PVC, giving those outside of their home base of Zion, IL a fuller look at their 4-track brilliance.
There's a crowded sound to this buzzing and chiming pop - not unlike the Raspberries early LPs. But unlike the Raspberries, there's a fuzzier edge to their melodic guitar hooks, and a dispassion in the vocals that isn't as AM radio-friendly. At times the lack of passion can seem fey (the Bomp single of "Okay" trumps the album take, for example). Their later LPs for Elektra would give the music more breathing room, but it's the claustrophobic living-room vibe that gives this LP its distinction.
Nominally recorded as a demo, this set has become the defining document of this great indie pop band. Overlooked by many of the band's Elektra-era fans, it seems to go in and out of print on the band's own Black Vinyl label. Pick one up when you can!
The birth of Indie Pop.......2003-10-01
When I first discovered this album it stood out like a sore thumb in my CD collection. Sure, I had most of the Cheap Trick CD's, some Badfinger and Big Star stuff, and actually even had Shoes "Best of" CD. However, only one cut from this album was represented on the Best of, and their later albums featured fuller production techniques. This is not the first Shoes album, they actually released one called Un Dans Versailles in 1975 and crafted an unreleased record called Bazooka in 1976 (collected on the compilation As Is). These early recordings give credit to Shoes being among the first indie pop pioneers. Black Vinyl Shoes is stunning because at that time (and pretty much to this day), NOBODY sounded like this record. They recorded everything on a 4 track, kept the cover art simple, and released the record through their own label. It was a D.I.Y. production that preceded (and gave hope to) pretty much every indie pop band. With their lo-fi fuzz sound washing over sweet melodies, and soft vocals, on paper they sound like an early version of Jesus and Mary Chain or Dream Syndicate, but in fact were nothing like either band. They were pop traditionalists, they just couldn't AFFORD to make their guitars sparkle like the Byrds or Big Star could. The sound is beautiful in it's own right, and some of the songs are instant classics. Even if it's not the most consistent Shoes CD, it is a must have due to its often underestimated (and uncredited) influence on the D.I.Y. pop crowd.
Best Tracks:
"Boys Don't Lie" - 2 minutes of sublime fuzz pop. Structured like a basic pop punk song, but sounds like nothing else.
"Do You Wanna Get Lucky" - Sloppy drums, screeching atonal solo, but still just a pretty, catchy song. Sounds like a Revolver-era Beatles song done by a garage band rather than experienced pros.
"Tragedy" - Some of the best vocals on the CD, even if you can't understand a word. Great song.
"Capital Gain" - Weird twists and quirky lyrics show that this band had more than met the eye.
"Okay" - My #1 track here. Bouncy, simple, and textbook power pop. Early Beatles given the lo-fi treatment 15 years before bands like Apples In Stereo.
"Fire For Awhile" - When Shoes slow it down, it is stunning. The harmonies pave the way for their later records with denser vocals, and the guitars chime with a drowsy sadness. Beautiful.
A classic!.......2002-06-27
Browsing through and finding that this underground classic is represented by only one, one-star review, I felt that I had to weigh in.
I think this album is amazing. Buzzing, surprising guitar hooks, supersweet falsetto vocals, early Ramones bounce (really!). Recorded in a living room. This album really puts a smile on your face.
Everybody is welcome to their opinion, and if you simply don't like power-pop, then you probably won't like this. But if you enjoy such bands as, say, Big Star, this will be a treat!
These 'Shoes' should walk to the discount bin!.......2002-06-07
I don't know how these guys' later releases are,but I bought this on rave-up reviews about the band from the net. If you like listening to throw-away cuts of early 60's era Who songs-then you might enjoy this. Otherwise-avoid like the plague!! Buy at you're own peril.(if you enjoy 'pop'-get SUGARBOMB-'Bully')

The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11
Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!
Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15
I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.
Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.
I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.

Somewhat obsure, Shep and the Limelites are the BEST.......2005-12-25
James "Shane" "Shep" Sheppard is one of the greatest song writers and performers of the Doo Wop era. His music is as alive and memorable today as it was 45 years ago. His life would be the source of a great movie about getting into "the business". This album is a collection of his greatest works, and there is not a "clinker" in the mix. This is, I believe, the best value album I have seen. Long live Doo Wop.

Wow I never thought I would ever rate a Sir Mix-A-Lot cd this low but this cd is very very different than his older ones. Some of the production doesn't fit Mix at all along with most of these lame hooks. It sounds like Mix is trying to appeal to the radio more on here than before. It was so awesome to hear Mix was coming out with a new album and I couldn't wait, but after hearing this I wish he would have just stayed retired so he wouldn't have this weak album in his great catalog.
Sounds like Britney Spears.......2006-05-17
Man,
Sir Mix-A-lot had great albums and constantly evolved with his sound and lyrics.
Seminar, Swass, Mack Daddy, Chief Boot Knocka, Return of the Bumpasaurus all great albums.
But this here... if I wouldn't have known that this garbage was from Mix I'd never guessed so.
This CD is a Nightmare.
Maybe he tried to sell out I don't know.
This CD sounds like a mix between Britney Spears, NSync, 50 Cent on LSD.
It's a cheap disco nightmare.
Daddy is definitely not home or at least I hope he don't is.
what happened?.......2004-11-05
I'm not saying this is a bad record, in fact it is a really good one but why did you have to change your voice up for? Thats the only thing that gets to me but other than that it's worth getting to any mix fan. Please return to your traditional sound on your next cut mix. I respect that you want to experiment but i really hope that this is the only album. The lyrics, beats and styles are tight so don't think this record is bad but if your used to the old mix sound this may take a while to get used to.
Damn you, Mix!.......2004-09-12
I listened to this entire cd in less than a minute. I guess not even Sir Mix A Lot isn't infallible. I don't know what's sadder; the fact this thing was released or the fact that i'll never get that fifteen bucks back.
Great Cd.......2004-04-08
Sir Mix-A-Lot is back! "Big Johnson" is a must listen and response to the old school "Baby Got Back." Great CD. Worth buying!
