Ruth "Miss Rhythm" Brown was the hit-making queen from 1949 to the end of the 50's to a point that Atlantic Records was once called "the house that Ruth built". No less! She was one of the main artists who established New York label's predominance in the R&B field. She was forgotten later -only to come back stronger than ever with a worlwide reputation as R&B pioneer and advocate for the rights and royalties of her peers from her non-profit "Rhythm & Blues Foundation". Inspired by jazz legends Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, Brown's seductive vocal delivery delighted millions on legendary chart-toppers such as 'Teardrops in My Eyes', 'So Long', 'Mambo Baby' and many others. Later, her sharp sense of humor lead her to a TV sitcom and a role on John Waters´ movie "Hairspray", plus a Tony Award for her starring acting in Black and Blue at Broadway. On the aptly titled Black is Brown and Brown is Beautiful, originally released in 1969, she puts her strong voice to soulful covers of 'Yesterday', 'Please Send Me Someone to Love' (Mayfield) and own songs such as 'Miss Brown's Blues'. Beautiful Music, Yet There Is No There Here.......2003-01-13

The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."

If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.

Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.

If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

A collaboration of rap artist "from the Golden Gate to the Lone Star State," as phrased on the cd's cover. Beat-wise, 34 Reasons keeps it clean and simple. 34 Reasons creates a calming vibe to bump to, but it also carries plenty of hype. Featured in this collaboration is a familiar artist that goes by the name Baby Bash. Baby Bash has two tracks on the second disc, "City of Dank" and "Sideshow." Baby Bash's "City of Dank" creates an image in the mind of what it is to be coming from the streets of California with a thug mentality. It's not negative, but it's not very positive either, it's simply a realistic look at how things are. A few other artist worth honorable mentions are Andre Nickatina, Cougnut, and Mr. Kee, who is featured on four tracks. 34 Reasons is a loaded book, with 18 tracks on the first disc and 20 on the second. Listening to 34 Reasons definitely fills time. In the name of 'gangster rap' this collaboration meets quality from track to track. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!! Excellent music.......2003-09-14 Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel? Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version. Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18 I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing. Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13 CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack. INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31 Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues,who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack. Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. If you have scrolled this far down the page, you are obviously interested enough to be serious about this genre. I therefore say - you MUST buy this CD. The "Briggs Fair" alone is worth the price, I'd pay half as much again for their recording of the Turtle Dove.

Such a beautiful clear tenor voice, perfect tuning, not too fruity, not too dry. Add to this truly glorious phrasing and overall shape, and the unteachable sense of the shape of the music, and you have an almost impossibly good combination.

The first time you hear this disc you will fall in love with it. You will have to buy it, if it's not yours already. Don't waste time. Addict your friends. Get it NOW!
