In 1990, it was still fairly novel to mix R&B songcraft with overpowering hip-hop beats, so this spinoff by New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe seemed innovative and exciting. Sadly it hasn't aged well. None of the three are compelling singers, and they lack the ability to plead for love effectively (anyone can demand love, but a true soulman has to convince a reluctant participant). Nor are they imaginative rappers--neither their words nor their delivery stand out. But this disc came before the likes of Missy Elliott, Puff Daddy, Jermaine Dupri, or Dallas Austin made a big impact on the scene. As such it's a fine document of black teenage lust during the Gulf War months. --Martin Johnson

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO BRET'S VOICE!?.......2007-07-23

Poison'd! (2007) Poison's new album of cover songs.

INTRODUCTION:
Poison needs no introduction. These guys were the kings of glam metal, and their legacy lives on. Even after several band member changes, the classic lineup eventually reunited, continuing to tour and record. In 2007 the band released Poison'd!

OVERVIEW:
Poison released Poison'd! in 2007. The album features a mix of new and old cover songs. The band's classic lineup of Bret Michaels, CC Deville, Rikki Rockett, and Bobby Dall

REVIEW:
I was stoked when I heard Poison was recording a covers album - after all, all of their old covers had been good. A whole album's worth of them sounded like a great idea.

But there are two problems.

First, there are thirteen tracks on this CD, and of them five are previously released. Meaning five of these tracks most Poison fans already own on something else, and would therefore be forced to buy them yet again.

Secondly is Bret Michaels' voice. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?! This guy used to be one of the best singers in rock and roll. Now his voice sounds like crap! This alone pretty much ruined the album for me. Fortunately, the rest of the band holds things together pretty well, and it comes out as an average release overall.

Tracks 1-8 are newly recorded for this compilation.

"Little Willy" (originally performed by Sweet)
Not a bad little song, but definitely not the best Sweet song for Poison to cover. Poison is a glam band, so why didn't they cover one of Sweet's later glam-flavored hits? Oh well. This song stays true to the original, for the most part, though Deville throws in the occasional wild riff.

"Suffragette City" (originally performed by David Bowie)
One of my favorite Bowie tunes, this fast-paced glam rock number seemed like the ideal song for Poison to cover. The instrumentation is great here on Poison's version, and the only thing wrong with the recording is Michaels' now-crappy voice (expect to hear that same line a lot more times before this review is over.)

"I Never Cry" (originally performed by Alice Cooper)
One of Alice Cooper's classic ballads. As Poison has a lot of experience with ballads, this is a good choice. Melodic and peaceful by comparison to most Alice Cooper songs, Poison pulls this one off nicely.

"I Need to Know" (originally performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)
This had always been one of my favorite Tom Petty songs, fast-paced and hard rocking. Deville's guitar playing is awesome here, and overall it serves as a damn good rendition of Petty's old song.

"Can't You See" (originally performed by The Marshall Tucker Band)
An unlikely song choice - I didn't expect to hear Poison playing southern-flavored classic rock. Obviously, it can't compare to the original, but it's still a decent cover. Better than I expected.

"What I Like About You" (originally performed by The Romantics)
The classic party rock tune - definitely an ideal song for Poison to cover. It was a good choice for a song to record, and Poison's rendition is great. Once again, only Michaels' degraded voice drags it down.

"Dead Flowers" (originally performed by The Rolling Stones)
A less-popular, highly obscure Rolling Stones tune - I'm surprised the guys in Poison even knew this one existed. Michaels even tries to pull off a Mick Jagger impersonation throughout numerous parts of the song. Not a bad little tune.

"Just What I Needed" (originally performed by The Cars)
Poison covers a tune from one of my favorite classic rock/new wave groups. It seems like an ideal song for the group to cover. Sadly, it just doesn't work. The noisy guitars and Michaels' weakening voice weigh this one down. Probably the weakest of the newly-recorded covers. A real shame; I expected more out of this one.

Tracks 9-13 were previously released on other Poison releases.

"Rock and Roll All Nite" (originally performed by KISS)
Since this was recorded in the eighties, Michaels' voice doesn't suck. He sings GREAT on this tune. Poison did a great job covering this old KISS tune, and it's good to finally have it on a Poison album (and not a compilation or soundtrack.)

"Squeeze Box" (originally performed by The Who)
Although this isn't brand new, it did come out in recent years. That means Michaels' voice blows. Still, the instrumentation is nice. Noisy guitars are a wild change from the original Who version, but it works out pretty well for the most part.

"You Don't Mess Around with Jim" (originally performed by Jim Croce)
This was an outtake from the band's eighties sessions. Though never commercially released until the reissues the band did in recent years as a bonus cut, is a great cover song. Poison breathes new life into Croce's classic singer/songwriter anthem.

"Your Mama Don't Dance" (originally performed by Loggins and Messina)
One of the oldest songs featured on here, this originally appeared on the band's second album, Open Up And Say Ahh!. Easily the greatest cover song Poison ever recorded. If you want one cover song that stays true to the original, yet sums up what Poison is all about, look no further than this song.

"We're an American Band" (originally performed by Grand Funk Railroad)
This song was released one year prior to the album on the band's "best of" compilation. It's new so, obviously, Bret Michael's voice... need I say more? Oh well. As a whole it's a good cover. The rest of the band saves it.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good album. Not horrible, not great, just good. Average. If this album teaches us one thing, it's that it's time for Bret Michaels to retire. I have no idea how a guy like him can have his voice degrade so much in so limited a time, whereas plenty of old classic rock singers still sound find. Final verdict? For Poison fans/completists only.

EDITION NOTES:
BUY THIS ALBUM AT WAL-MART. NOWHERE ELSE. Wal-Mart includes a bonus track, a cover of Justin Timberlake's Sexy Back. I didn't know this and ended up getting it at a different retailer, only to discover Wal-Mart had the bonus track too late.

Great party album!.......2007-07-23

I just saw Poison on their 2007 summer tour and they played a bunch of songs from this album. They sounded great next to their old classics. Which is what makes this album a really great idea. How many bands that have been around for over 20 years can go out and play 4-5 songs from a just released album and have the crowd totally into it? Great idea. Poison are a great band. Glad to see them together after all these years still making great music.

Quite enjoyabe and way better...........2007-07-23

than expected. Being a Poison and hair metal fan had to check this one out. I was pleasantly surprised with this effort and hope it only leads to a studio album. Anyway,pretty much from beginning to end,it is filled with real good covers.Little Willy,I Never Cry,I Need To Know,Can't You see,What I Like about You and Squeeze Box are the standouts along with older covers,Your Momma Don't Dance and We're An American Band.Check it out if you like Poison and the songs they covered. They did a fine job and as I said,better than I expected. Go buy it now!!!! A solid 4.5 from me. Loved it....

This is the first new material poison that I have actually enjoyed since native tongue,although it is not really there songs they really do put the poison stamp on them.I love there rendition of little willie ,and surprisingly they do a good cover of marshal tucker,but the best ones are what I like about you ,squeeze box and of course your mama don't dance and rock n roll all night.I do wish they would come up with some good new material of there on but this one was really a good all covers cd.They may not be writing good music anymore but this one proves they can still perform it .Rock on Poison

Totally Poisonous!.......2007-07-16

There may be a pretty good reason why 80's rock bands revives old good songs, and pretty much I can say Poison delivers an impressive performance into doing it. The songs "I Never Cry, Just What I needed, Dead Flowers, Little Willy and Were an American Band" are among the best. The rest were also nicely performed but somehow, not the best selection of songs to be revived. If you're a POISON fan, this CD is recommended.

If you're talkin' bout Rock n Roll, then definitely you're talkin' bout POISON; the best hair metal band and the sons of glam rock! This 20th anniversary collection shows the undeniable truth that POISON marks as an icon to the 80's rock n roll. But I find it dissapointing that the songs included were almost the same in their first Greatest Hits collection. In my opinion, they should'nt have included songs like Were an American Band, Rock n' Roll All Nite and Your Mama Dont Dance since they were released in a revival album called Poison'd. The new songs included like Shooting Star and Last Song were impressive however. All the rest were truly great POISON classics. Overall, this CD may be the best substitute to their Greatest Hits 86-96 collection.

I was missing my Poison songs that I remember jamming to when I was in high school. This album brought back floods of memories! Some of their newer stuff isn't too bad either. Great collection of some of their biggest hits. Good purchase...

Poison is one of those 1980s bands that became "unfashionable" after the 1990s grunge craze, and is now looked upon with almost universal scorn. Reviled for their big hair, spandex clothing, and simple song structures, almost nobody even admits to liking them, but I still do! For one thing, who cares if 80s music is no longer hip and trendy? Time waits for nobody, and all music eventually becomes old. The grunge music that replaced hair metal is every bit as dated as hair metal itself is, and I don't see people bashing Nirvana or Soundgarden for being "90s has beens" do you? Nothing stays hip and trendy forever. And the other argument used against Poison is that their music isn't complicated or technically complex, it only has 3 chords, and doesn't require any talent to play. Has it ever occured to you hair metal bashers that there is more to music than lightning fast guitar solos that are so impossible that nobody can play them? Sometimes 3 chords is enough to make an impression on the listener, even if it isn't hard to play. In fact, virtually all rock stars s*ck at playing their instruments. You only need to look at all the Avril Lavigne, Green Day, U2, Nickelback and Nirvana songs that have ever hit #1 on the rock charts to realize that. Nobody thinks anything less of these people for playing 3 chords on their guitars, so why should it be any different for poison? I think this band has always been underrated.

Pop pundits might contend that a Poison greatest-hits collection should be an EP. Yet despite jeers from critics, these glam-metal pretty boys produced big hits, filled arenas, and fueled MTV in the late '80s. And the opening track on this 18-cut compilation sets the record straight: "Nothing but a Good Time," indeed. From down 'n' dirty rockers such as "Talk Dirty to Me," "Look What the Cat Dragged In," and "I Want Action," to mega-ballads "Something to Believe In" and "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," this is a treat for those who like big hair and bigger hooks. Included are two previously unreleased songs, "Sexual Thing" and "Lay Your Body Down," the latter a lush, likable five-minute power ballad. One complaint: the song-by-song notes by singer Bret Michaels somewhat lack the pizzazz one anticipates from a band with such a colorful comportment. --Katherine Turman

Quite possibly, the greatest 80's hair metal band, Poison's Greatest Hits is packed with explosive tracks picked from their first four albums and some late releases. As my very first POISON CD, I came to love the band and their songs that are driven by ultimate killer choruses. Every song is perfectly written and impressively performed, from cool glam rock to highly anticipated power ballads, and included in the booklet were passionate liner notes about the history of their songs written by Bret Michaels himself! Hearing this CD will leave you wanting for more! Definitely, a MUST-HAVE for Rock n Roll addicts!

Poison is a great band, even though most critics will disagree. There songs are fun and rocking. This is a great collection of there best songs and its great start for new Poison fans. Id even recommend it to anyone who likes good rock. They are better the Motley Crue.

This was the first CD i picked up from them and got hooked from the start. There are many other songs that aren't on here that are a 'must have', but this CD should be in every Poison Fans Collection!!

I never liked poison. The production of the actual albums are very good, but then they should be......so are Britney Spears!..and why? Well, after the new wave of British Heavy metal led to talented bands like Van Halen to get on the scene and make metal enorously popular in the US, record producers wanted to cash in on the act. So, just as Disney do today, groups were manufactured into iconic figures......in the case of poison, ....lets sell sex and string a few guitars in...oh yea, and hairspray.......and call it music! Its because of bands like poison that metal in the 80s was doomed. I hate grunge, but thank god it came before metal died forever. Poison existed because girls wanted to have sex with them....and, unlike motley crue, had no point to make musically
AVOID......unless you like manufactured tripe!!!

Groundbreaking in style and R&B/hiphop..........................2007-05-04

BBD kicked open the 90's with this timeless banger. No one expected these three of New Edition to be this good and dope. The production from Spiderman & Freeze and PE's Bomb Squad set this joint up for success. Many an act would take peices of their style, such as Jodeci, TLC, SWV and others. The smoothed out mental dress in back in style thanks to Usher, Kanye and just about every R & B artist today.

It was in the MTV era( when they actually played music )when i heard a beat that made me stop...it was Poison by BBD. That was just the begining for me and this album. i was just starting to DJ back then and i was always looking for the next heater for the dance floor. BBD gave me more than one, in fact they gave us all music that to this day is still being requested and played well after 12:00AM...their songs are still heaters!!!"I thought it was me" and " Do me" never got old on the dancefloor. I never played a party without all of the above being requested by everyone back home in Santa Paula,Ca. For anyone who had a taste for the 80's dance music ...this is a mixture of R& b, New Jack, Soul-(When will I see You Smile Agian?) that you need in your collection. It's 2007 and i'm still DJing and i'm still playing these same BBD cuts on the dancefloor on the regular! This album is a prime example of how good the music was back in the 80's...want proof...i'm still playing BBD almost 20 years later and getting the same reaction from the dancefloor...! JC Cota[...]

One one my favorite groups, with New Edition being my favorite. This cd takes me back to the days when your boyfriend use to make love song mixtapes. I know i had one with "I Do Need You" and When Will I See You Smile Again. Love every song on this and with the way music is now it's rare to have a cd with more than 1-2 even decent songs. Classic, Classic, Classic!!!!!!

Ivy League.......2006-07-11

The spin-off trio from New Edition formed by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe to form Bell Biv DeVoe. Their debut album and lead single Poison combined R&B, dance and hip-hop with timeless quotable "...never trust a big butt and a smile..." to bring back memories of that day in time. The ten song album starts off with "Dope!". This song definitely sets the tone for the LP and builds expectation that hasn't been left out with again memorable lyrics "...come here girl I wanna knock your boots..." that was also produced by Dr. Freeze. "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?" continued on exposing the multi-talented group and their style. As a majority of this LP "Let Me Know Something?!" continues with fast pace dance tunes smoothed by Bell's vocals. "...take a look at me / tell me do you like what you see..." bluntly stated on "Do Me!" as they slow the tempo down a few degrees for a hot sexual encounter. Referencing the life of New Edition and the transition, "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph And Johnny (Word To The Mutha)!" connects to the members and the fan which was produced themselves with the help of Peace Production. "Ain't Nut'in' Changed!" is all hip-hop down to the production from Hank Shocklee, Eric Sadler and Keith Shocklee (also Public Enemy) as one of the three songs produced by the team. Tracks nine and ten contains the only ballads found on this album produced by Timmy Gatling and Alton Stewart with "When Will I See You Smile Again?" and "I Do Need You". The ballads show more mature sound (N.E. with Johnny Gill) harmonies that made them popular for that time. As New Edition or B.B.D they still know how to entertain with great classic songs.

HIP! FUNKY! FRESH!.......2006-06-20

I got my hands on "Poison" 8 years ago when I bought it for cheap at a used CD shop. This album has its moments with the strongest tracks being the ones that were played on the radio: BBD (I Thought It Was Me), Do Me!, Poison, When Will I See You Smile Again?, and I Do Need You. The other songs I didn't care too much for. Thank goodness they didn't have more than 11 songs! Even though these guys had no real rap skills, they still delivered the goods. They had a style, they were hip, and had a few good singles under their belts.

Album Description

The Poison' is an album rooted in classic British metal, with brutal riffs and colossal, pounding drums all lovingly and respectfully thrown into the mix along with the band's own blend of powerhouse aggression and youthful anarchy and energy. With `The Poison', Bullet for my Valentine are set to firmly establish themselves as the front runners of UK Metal, and give all the US bands a run for their money.

From the stunning opening introduction track, guest staring classical metal titans Apocalyptica, the million miles an hour heavy as hell `Her Voice Resides', the acoustic metal classic in the making `All these things I hate (revolve around me)', through to the top anthem `4 Words (To choke upon)', this is a debut album to savour in all its epic, metal glory. Working once again with uber producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Cradle of Filth), the album successfully manages to capture the blinding raw energy and power of a band with the world at its feet, a band about to explode!

Nice metal album.......2007-07-25

After listening to this album I'll hook you guys up with a review. These guys really aren't the best metal musicians becuase of really simple guitar riffs. Even though they are simple they have a catchy tune and good song writing. Matt Tuck (lead singer) should sing most songs in their future beucause the other singer just gets annoying with his screams in the backround. I don't listen to most new metal bands but this band really has talent. I would rank them above any metal band that came out in the 2000's. This album really doesn't have a bad track except for "her voice resides". Hope you guys like my drunk review and give me a good rating. Buy or download this album!!!

My Favorite.......2007-06-21

My God, Bullet for My Valentine is one of my favorite bands. Not because of its "popularity," but because of its rather...unique sound. I'm not sure if it would be called unique due to the guitar solo's and excessive screaming, though...ah, well.

This band's sound is more in-your-face, like most Metal-based bands, with excellent guitar riffs and solo's. Certainly, this CD will not bore you, unless you get over things quickly. Other than that, this is a somewhat memorable band.

Somewhat. It could have been more shocking, it could have made us think, "Wow." And I mean, WOW. Oh, well. That all drives us towards the impossible perfection, now doesn't it? Hm.

This is highly recommended! Very nice, indeed!

One of the Greatest Metal Albums to come out of UK in a While .......2007-05-09

I first got this album after hearing there song Tears Don't Fall and I enjoyed it a lot. I like the fact that they mix good vocals with good screaming. I like screaming but I don't like too much of it and these guys give a good blend of both vocals and screaming. I a amazed that the lead singer can sing, scream and play guitar at the same time. This is a good album from a very talented band and I am impressed that everyone except the drummer gives significant vocal contribution. Recommended for anyone who enjoys Hardcore or Emocore. Highlights are Tears don't Fall, Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow, and All Theses Things I Hate (Revolve Around You).

Screamo-metal for mallcore kids.......2007-04-30

The Poison was introduced to me by a friend of mine who thought I might like them. The first song was good but,the rest of the album left a sour taste in my mouth. If I had to describe this record I would say it sounds like Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold had a love child. The guitar is actually really good but, the singing is way too emo for my taste. It isn't very original either.You might even think that you have heard some of these songs on other metal records that recently came out."The Poison" does have it's moments. I liked "Spit You Out" and "4 Words" alot. Had there been more metal singing, less emo singing, and a little more originality it might have been worth buying. Instead they just leave you wondering if the same people who created N'Sync created these guys. 2 stars weak

The metal I've been looking for.......2007-04-24

This is the metal I've been looking for. Speed and aggression WITH technical ability and good song-crafting. On top of that, the guy can actually sing (when he chooses to--he likes to do the Pantera/Hatebreed vocal-cord, shredding-screaming-thing, which I don't get personally). Cool riffs and some cool soloing (but not much).

For me, The Poison draws on those elements that were best in 80s speed-metal while still having a contemporary sound. I don't give out five stars lightly but this is the best new disc I've gotten in quite some time.

Highly recommended.

Just as two super-sexy, professional killers are inexorably drawn to each other, so is the Mr. and Mrs. Smith soundtrack inexorably drawn to the obvious. Husband and wife shootouts? This compilation gets into the spirit of things right away with "Love Stinks" (J. Geils Band) and "Tainted Love" (Soft Cell). It follows up with more of the same: "You Give Love a Bad Name" (performed by metal band Atreyu, and "Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)" from the ska-punk group the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Fortunately, this disc grows more interesting toward the midway point with Nouvelle Vague's Brazilian-style cover of "I'll Melt with You" and alterna-lounge act Pink Martini's "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love. The latter melts seamlessly into the lovely instrumental, "Assassination Tango." It's on these more exotic tracks that this compilation shines--if only there were a few more. The middle of the disc is romantic--the rest feels like action movie cliché. --Leah Weathersby

Best compilation/soundtrack I've heard in years!.......2007-01-10

OK, where are you going to get Poison & Air Supply in one CD? I really enjoyed this one, as it had all the really fun music from the movie, including the tango score the couple danced to and the "express yourself" music from their fight scene at home. There's a few odd remake/covers from artists I'd rather hear only from the originals, but otherwise I highly recommend this one.

WORTH IT!.......2006-05-18

This CD is worth the money for track 6 alone, Mondo Bongo's Alone. Everytime I hear it, I see Brad and Angelina fighting and then making up. It is the song for lovers who have lost their way.

build your own Smith soundtrack.......2006-04-29

If you liked the movie, you will like at least half of this CD. If you only like half, it will either be the collection of love-stinks songs (Love Stinks, I Used to Love Her [But then I had to kill her], Tainted Love, etc.) or it will be the collection of South-American-flavored tracks, like Mondo Bongo, Lay Lady Lay, and Let's Never Stop Falling in Love.

As for me, I love the second collection within this CD, so I used those tracks to make my own "soundtrack" (read: iPod playlist), fleshing it out with Putumayo's "Nuevo Latino" and "Music From the Coffee Lands." If you are in this camp, I highly recommend buying at least one of those CDs (Amazon sells them along with other South American Putumayo CDs) as the tracks on the official Mr. and Mrs. Smith soundtrack will not be enough.

Postscript: whichever way you go, you will likely scratch your head at the inclusion of Baby, Baby on the soundtrack. Geez, why not include Girl From Ipanema then (the song playing in the elevator of the home improvement store). The song was picked to represent the anti-John-and-Jane-moment, the vapid dull suburban cocktail party so why?? I would have preferred "(Who Discovered) America" by Ozomatli (you can find this track on their Street Signs album, also available on Amazon) or "Oxidados" by Plastilina Mosh (album: Hola Chicuelos), to name just two songs that were in the movie and did not make the soundtrack.

Not only was this soundtrack well-constructed to fit a high-paced, action/romance-type movie, but it is also attractive to a wide variety of personal musical tastes. From more traditional sounds like the latin Mondo Bongo and Pink Martini, to more pop rock sounds like Love Stinks and Poison, this collection is upbeat and fun to listen to from beginning to end. It has also proven to be an especially great CD to have on a road trip. I highly recommend it!

Romantic and fun..........2006-03-13

This made a wonderfull valentines gift for my Girlfriend and also nice romantic and fun background music. She has since put it on her mp3 player (of course) and she ejoys all the songs. Mr. and Mrs. Smith was enjoyable both as a movie, (because it was a chickflick I could make it through) and as a songtrack (Because the music is wonderfull!) Good buy, oh and good music to slow dance or heck, tango to!

WOW!!!!!!!.......2007-07-22

When I first saw this item I was browsing around the internet just killing time. I already own the original release of The Poison, so I was a little hesitant to order this for 4 new tracks and a dvd. I wish I had bought it as soon as i noticed it. The extra tracks are amazing and the dvd is fantastic. BFMV is one of the best new bands I've heard in awhile. The music is melodic and heavy. If you do not own this cd do yourself a favor and buy it. TODAY!!!

The second song on this album from the premier pop-metal band of the '80s sums up perfectly what Poison was all about: "Nothin' But a Good Time" isn't exactly deep, but it's a fun song. There's other good stuff on what is unquestionably Poison's best album; "Love on the Rocks" and "Look But You Can't Touch" show that this band is at its best when it's not taking itself seriously, though the wistful "Fallen Angel" remains one of Poison's best songs. "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," on the other hand, has nothing to distinguish it from the flood of power ballads of the late 80s. The cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance," however, more than makes up for this, with the sense of fun and humor that made Poison so entertaining. --Genevieve Williams

This record has a message, and that message is 'ladies, take off your clothes.' I put this whole style of music in a catagory I call 'Bitchin' Metal. Now where is my hairspray, fringe pants and cowboy boots.

Nothin' But A Good Time!.......2006-09-12

Poison doing what Poison does best. This album may not exactly be deep or profound, but it's great fun. `Nothin' But A Good Time' is one of the most fun tracks you'll ever hear from any band. Driving guitars, great drums and the typical Poison shoot from the hip nothing but fun lyrics. Truly one of the great rock anthems of all time.

The album kicks off with `Love On The Rocks', nothing too spectacular, but a decent 80s style rocker. After that the album kicks it up a notch with the aforementioned `Nothin' But A Good Time', what a fantastic track! CC's solo is a fantastic trip of 80s shred followed with an awesome pounding track of drums from Rikki. Great stuff! Afterwards the album tries to keep the high pace going with `Back To The Rocking Horse', a solid yet repetitive song about getting a second chance, wouldn't we all like that? God knows what I could do if I had the chance.

Next up, `Good Love'. It is what it sounds like, a Poison tribute to the sleaze and debauchery of their lifestyle. It's not so much about good love as it is good enough for the moment love. `Tearin' Down The Walls' is the next track, and it's a great attempt at a putting up a crowd sing along anthem. While it's not solid enough to remain in their set list today, at the time this would be a great live song to get the crowd pumped up a bit.

The other highlights of the album are the hit single `Fallen Angel', kind of a typical small town girl goes to the big city kind of track. CC's guitar work really stands out and makes the track worth listening too again and again. `Every Rose Has It's Thorn' is the power ballad that every band aspired to have. After this song hit it big, every hair band under the sun had to have an acoustic love song somewhere on their album, and few ever came close to being as good as this number 1 smash hit. Poison also continues to show their prowess at doing fantastic covers, this time with the Loggins/Messina classic `Your Mama Don't Dance'. The video is one of my favorites, not so much for the live footage, but just for the little intro that reminds us, back in 1988 Poison could be considered a skaters band. My how time's have changed.

All in all a stout album from start to finish, if you're a fan of that 80s pop metal sound, than this is one of the best albums you could hope to find.

Nuthin' but a good time..........2006-08-21

Back in the '80s, Thrashers had mortal enemies in the form of Glam Rockers, and one of the biggest and easiest targets was Poison. Hairspray, make up, spandex and a penchant for happy Pop songs mislabeled Metal by a clueless press made Poison cannon fodder for the bullet belt, mullet and obscenely tight jeans brigade. Poison didn't really give a damn, just carrying on their merry way, and selling millions of records.

`Open Up And Say...Ahh!' is a good exercise in the art of filler songs. Filler songs are like those gap filler products you can buy for fixing cracks in your walls - they match the wallpaper and you don't really notice them. There were four singles released from this album, a 40 percent strike rate for a ten song album and while they were all reasonably successful, the rest was filler, and pretty bloody bland and formless filler at that.

First though, the good bits. "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" is the power ballad which all other power ballads aspire to be. It is weepy, cheesy and catchy, and surprisingly wasn't written by Willie Nelson. It has a solo to die for, and to cry to, making a nonsense of all the criticism levelled at guitarist CC DeVille's playing ability. This is a white trash anthem to broken hearts and lost loves, perfect for singing with newly found beer buddies.

"Your Mamma Don't Dance" is an ancient Kenny Loggins song given the Glam treatment. It's harmless Poppy nonsense, about teen antics and a girlfriend's uncool parents. "Nothin' But A Good Time" is an '80s version of the same song, but the teens have grown up, and want a weekend escape from the daily grind of life. "Fallen Angel" is a too cheerful treatment of the pitfalls of a small town girl trying to make it in the big city. These four songs have more hooks than a fishing tackle shop and more Pop melodies than the Spice Girls mustered in an entire career. Poison always knew their musical limitations, and pushed their abilities right to the limit. Bret Michaels might not have had the strongest voice in the Glam scene, but he knew it, and made the most of what talent he did have.

And then, the filler. Oh dear...but you can hardly blame the poor wee Poison boys, because all their heroes had made careers of padding out a couple of songs and calling it an album. Just check out pretty much any studio album by Kiss or Van Halen or even Mötley Crüe, and you'll find half-hearted, underdone tracks aplenty. The song titles give it away- "Back To The Rocking Horse", "Look But You Can't Touch", and "Love On The Rocks" don't promise much, and deliver exactly that. There's the odd decent moment, like a fun melody in the chorus of "Look But You Can't Touch", but moments don't make songs. Poison manage to hit every cliché listed in the 1980s Glam Rock handbook, and add a few of their own. None of it is terribly cerebral, but then it's not supposed to be.

The vinyl album version of `Open Up And Say...Ahh!' had a brilliant gimmick on the cover, in the form of a three dimensional tongue stuck to the painted up cat woman on the album cover. Looking back now, the cover is somewhat ridiculous and over the top, but that matched Poison's music, and the lifestyle provided by a mega-million selling album. CC DeVille's heroin addiction and Bret Michael's appetite for shagging models and groupies are both well documented, and perhaps those excesses stopped the band ever reaching the same heights again. `Open Up And Say...Ahh!' remains a dirty little secret, kept in the closet by many a Rocker who steadfastly denies ever owning it.

One of the best 80's rocking CD's.......2006-03-14

May be the best Poison Cd, it has energy and fun, trademarks of Poison's songlyrics, glam/hard rock music and wildlife style, that why it became the album of the summer of '88, starting from the "Love on the Rocks" opening with a cool riff of CC DeVille to the "Bad to be good" where Boby Dall played bass on a 70's street style, playing this CD is a purely "Nothing but a good time" that with a high volume can "Tearing down the walls", with one of the best rock and roll ballad of the 80's "Every Rose has it's thorn" making you remember a long forgotten "Good love" on a "Fallen Angel" that you can only "Look but you can 't touch" and made you wish going "Back to the Rocking horse", so if your "Mama don't dance" and you Daddy don't rock and roll, surely this Cd will make them go to dancing & rocking! This is a MUST for every music collector or is you are looking for good times this is the CD you must pick up!

I hope Capitol will release soon this CD remastered and adding the 2 B-sides: "Living for the minute" & "Gotta face the Hangman" for the recording sessions of this album, also as cool value add the full MTV Accoustic with the 6 songs recorded (good love, let it play -these 2 unreleased- talk dirty, unskinny bop, Every rose and Your mama don't dance, there is enough room on the 80 minutes that a CD can hold- surely will be a hit!!!! Taking advantage of the 20 years of Poison's celebration and that they will be on tour this summer.

It's astonishing what Newman can do in this score with a simple crescendo. I hope someone comes to their senses and releases the score to 'Less than Zero' as well as 'Men don't Leave', another of Newman's heart-wrenching, unreleased scores.

If Raymond Rosswell and Peetus want to hear some GREAT Clasical/Orchestra Music then check out Black Aria from Glenn Danzig! It's not your typical metal/classical music you might expect from Danzig!

Less Than Zero Soundtrack.......2005-12-20

Good collection of songs. Poison has a neat rendition of KISS's "Rock and Roll All Nite". A great Slayer cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is a great slash metal tune. Aerosmith's cover of "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" sounds like nothing else, on par with "Train..", "Walking the Dog" and "Come Together" as Aerosmith's great cover songs. But, perhaps the steal of the record is a great Public Enemy song for enthusiasts and casual fans alike, "Bring the Noise" might have you coming back for more. Great collection on the car stereo or anywhere. The 4 out of 5 stars is mostly because of the song-to-song transition. Great artist sampler. Try it!!

Fair 80s nostalgia, but the score is best.......2005-04-12

For those who are looking for the original soundtrack score to the film, it's done by Thomas Newman. The same artist who did some other more recent and great soundtracks: American Beauty, Meet Joe Black, etc. I'm trying to find it too, but believe it may be unavailable.

A decade after alternative rock and grunge took down big-haired glam metal like a wounded bear, the tables have turned: The victors now snarl double-time covers of Eagles songs for their corporate masters, while the vanquished soldier on via the former's indie label spirit. On the evidence of this debut solo release, Poison frontman Bret Michaels has also learned a musical trick or two from the competition--and a few contemporaries. "Menace to Society," "Bittersweet," and the bonus track, "Party Rock Band," bristle with Silverlake pop-punk energy, while the title track and "One More Day" evoke no less than the Heartland spirit of John Mellencamp. "The Chant" flirts briefly with rap-metal, while the tongue-in-cheek excesses of "It's My Party" evoke an unlikely shotgun marriage between thrash and Lesley Gore. But Michaels hasn't forgotten the slick, hook-laden ballads that helped make his fortune either, with the buoyant "Raine" (whose video is also included on this enhanced disc) and melancholy bonus cut "Stay With Me" displaying both solid craftsmanship and surprising range. Bret Michaels is just as great! He rocked pretty cool. His metallic songs sounded like modern-day alternative (menace to society, bittersweet) and a bit grunge where he also looked like Kurt Cobain in the "Raine" video. However his ballads (one more day, forgiveness, stay with me, raine) sounded like Poison in their good old days where songs alike were timeless! Songs were very well written, performed and lyrics pertains to reality... real songs of life! Recommended for fans of metal, alternative and especially Poison fans! A must-have!

This cd really shows how well Bret can shine on his own. Don't get me wrong I love him with Poison, but when you listen to this cd you can really hear the difference in the music from the start. Personally i like the sound he has w/Poison better, but the songs he has on THIS cd really have ATTITUDE!
It's really refreshing actually. He covers everything from Break-ups to his first Daughter (Raine) to just standard songs.
Being a female, i'm not really into the song he wrote for his daughter, don't get me wrong its pretty and sweet, but if you like Bret it's like the last thing you really want to hear him sing about is a kid! sorry.
Not bad overall though.

Bret Michaels is a legend and writes fantastic music and alot of people will not admit or understand just how good he is.
Bret is a master at powerful ballads and some of them on this album are awesome. 'One more day', 'Raine', 'Menace to society' are fantastic tracks.
Bret michaels has a 3rd solo album called 'Freedom of sound' new country rock songs and some old country rock songs from a demo cd he did in 2000 called 'Country demos' but it's not available on amazon ?
