HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven Mirkin

If you're into M.K's latest and greates tunes, you will love this CD!! I listen to it a lot more then most of my cd that are collecting dust.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but...........2007-02-20

How many times people have to pay for Michael Jackson greatest hits album? Come on this should have been a single disc album. I already bought all of his old albums! Anyway I review the new songs there.
I liked They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Come Together, and Little Susie. They are all excellent tracks and I enjoyed them greatly. Scream, This Time Around, History, 2 Bad, and Smile are all average songs acceptable as filler
D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.
Please Michael we all know you need privacy and tabloids are not treating you right and you had a "bad" childhood. I am sick and tired of hearing these type of songs over and over which are similar to old ones. So please stop nagging and make unique music

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Makes History.......2007-01-16

The title of the album is very appropriate. With the first CD giving us a blast from the past of amazing songs, and the second disk pulling us into the future. Many people have complained about the second disk, but I find that the songs on it are quite brilliant. The first song, Scream, is one of the most original songs of the nineties. It has a sound you won't find anywhere else, and the brother/sister duo mix their vocals extremely well. The second track, They Dont Really Care About Us, is so passionate and stimulating. You almost can't help turning up the volume. Stranger in Moscow is one of the most beautiful songs MJ's written, and its production is top notch. Earth Song is THE most beautiful song he's done, and it has a feel that gives you goosebumps. Overall, the album is one of the best I've heard. Some people critisize it for being too angry, but the anger gives the songs a passion and a depth that other artists lack. Its definitely worth the money for this deep and interesting work of art.

5 out of 5 stars HIStory Is Great.......2006-12-27

The media has attacked this album since day one! Why? Well, the reason is that this album is viciously attacking the media! After they tried to destroy Mr. Jackson with the FAL$E 1993 Allegations. This is Michael's most heart-felt album & definitely one of my favorites. The album still sold 18 Million Copies (36 Million Disks) worldwide.

This album mixes anger for injustice, racial equality, saving the planet and love. It is a truly wonderful album & Mike expands his musical abilities by producing the whole album and playing most of the instruments on the album.

Galactic has always known how to serve up the old-school Crescent City funk in all of its rump-shaking glory, and every stop on their endless string of marathon shows only tightens them up another notch. Late for the Future, their third record, builds on their solid funk foundation and stands as their most ambitious, assertive, and sonically interesting work to date. For one, Galactic bare their teeth like never before, adding a furious intensity and pure rock raunchiness that they haven't previously captured on record. Listen to the thick and meaty sounds they conjure on "Century City" and "Action Speak Louder Than Words." The band also explores new territory with tracks like "Hit the Wall," with its distinct Middle Eastern flair, and "Two Clowns," which takes the music further out than its ever been. Much of the credit must go to producer Nick Sansano, who has beefed up their sound and inspired a more multifaceted approach. Old-school funk remains Galactic's bread and butter, but it's no longer the whole meal. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Galactic is Godlike.......2005-04-11

Okay, maybe not quite that amazing, but this is still a great album. From the first track to the last, this album is definitely solid in terms of grooves. Stanton Moore lays down great tracks on this album. Villified, Baker's Dozen, Doubliewide, and Black Eyed Pea are all great tracks. Buy this album. Now.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal CD.......2002-03-09

I bought this CD having only a vague idea of who Galactic is and what kind of music they play. This CD rocks! It's pretty New Orleans-flavored funk/jazz with some bite. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Theyve been coolin off since "Coolin' Off".......2001-06-28

Being from New Orleans and having seen Galactic 15-20 times, I have seen them stray further and further from their groove oriented roots. As a fan of the jazzy style exhibited on Coolin Off, Galactic's first and best releaase, I just can't dig this hard and edgy rock style that the band has developed. Stanton's versatility and agression on drums, Rich Voguls funky spacey sounds on keys and the occassional brilliant flashes of funky jams keep me coming back, but in recent live performances and on Late for the Future, Jeff Raines' hard rock guitar and the metal sound inhibit the groove exhibited on the older material. On Late for the Future, theres more of the gaudy Houseman tracks I've grown to despise, which simply slow the band down and cause them to lose their tightness and fluidity. I dont know why Theryl thinks its hip to wear the same ugly 3 piece suits and dedicate every song to "all the beautiful ladies in the house tonight" every show, but he's no Al Green.

4 out of 5 stars Please don't go mainstream!.......2001-04-26

You know that band that you liked long before anyone else did? Like when you were listening to the Dave Matthews Band in highschool, only to wake up five years later to find your mom grooving out to Dancing Nancies? Same story with these guys. This funk/jazz band from New Orleans has been the foundation of my CD collection for a few years and has yet to make that big jump to my radio dial and I'm greatful. Every time I play this or any Galactic CD at a party I get comments. No one knows these guys and I love it. See a show. Get a t-shirt and enjoy the raw sound of New Orleans funk before your mom gets wind of it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best feels around, no doubt.......2001-04-06

I clued in onto Galactic after reading an article in Modern Drummer showcasing Stanton Moore. Little did I know that Late For The Future would be one of the best funk recordings that I've ever heard. The New Orleans influence of the group and the drummer gives their music the perfect blend of street beat feel and ripping solos. This almblum is great in so many respects; you can engage in the solos and the composition, or you can just sit back and let the groove do the work. I higly recommend owning this alblum.

The three electronic, hip-hop-influenced albums Herbie Hancock recorded during the 1980s--of which Future Shock was the first, followed by Sound System and Perfect Machine--have been the most maligned by fans of his enormously influential '60s-era jazz work. The reissue of all three albums, each newly remastered with bonus mixes and new liner notes, makes it clear Hancock was much more than simply a jazz pianist reaching for a pop crossover audience. To be sure, Hancock got his pop hit with Future Shock's "Rockit," and there's plenty on Future Shock that sounds dated, from the early 80's synthesizer tones to the almost consciously stiff-sounding hip-hop beats that permeate every track. But dig a little deeper, and it's clear this is supremely intelligent dance music, with a combination of producer-bassist Bill Laswell's Kraftwerk-influenced industrial production and Latin percussionist Daniel Ponce's Bata drum, Pete Cosey's screeching guitar--which echoes his work with Miles Davis's 1970s band--Sly Dunbar's rock-solid funk drumming, and Grand Mixer D.S.T.'s radical (for the time) turntable scratching. And, of course, there's "Rockit", the track that introduced a generation of young listeners to Hancock and break-dancing robots in music videos. All in all, a reissue well worth revisiting. --Ezra Gale

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I, Robot.......2007-01-26

The legs of one of the robots in the fantastic video for Rockit says it all; grooving to the funky beat while moving in a tight circle, keeping in step with the turntable scratches and driving the beat where dub, hip-hop and jazz became a new dynamic in the studio. Everybody dance now!

Future Shock was a new sensation when released in early 1983, as Herbie Hancock (and his Rockit band) & Bill Laswell teamed up to deliver electronics with funk, fusion and a sprinkling of avant-garde.

Rockit garnered a Grammy award for best R&B instrumental performance, while the video captured five awards - including Video of the Year - in the first MTV Video Music Awards show.

The CD has five cuts sandwiched between Rockit and Rockit (Mega Mix), the latter not on the original release. A true gem is Future Shock, a Curtis Mayfield composition. Earth Beat and Rough pump the funk through the speakers, while Hancock lets the jazz notes do the talking in T.F.S. and Autodrive.

That the collaboration of Hancock and Laswell was unable to reproduce the magic in subsequent releases speaks greatly about the quality found in Future Shock.

5 out of 5 stars Is it HERBIE or is it LASWELL?.......2006-08-10

Herbie's alway's had his hand on the pulse of music, especially cutting edge stuff. He hooked up with Bill Laswell just when Laswell started an incredible run of "production jobs" that continues on through the 90's, and beyond. It's hard to figure just WHO get's the most credit here. Who cares? If you like it, dig! If you don't think it's "jazzy" enough, that's cool too, because it's very hip-hop/beats oriented (no guest "raps" but some cool soul vocals). A jazz artist incorporating the use of turntables and a whole array of synths and such-- read the liner notes with all the folks who appear here. One can't expect "Kind of Blue" now can you? Get funked up!

4 out of 5 stars The bonus track is not so great........2006-05-19

I remember this album from when it first came out. I was just a kid then and bought the album because of the video for Rockit. I soon came to like all of the other tracks on the album as well. People I knew at the time expressed mixed opinions about the album, such as whether or not it was "jazz" or if it was worthy of Herbie Hancock's reputation as a "legit" musician or whatever. But like another reviewer on this site has said, this CD is pretty much full of mediocre R&B filler. But in my opinion, it is worth listening to. I like it. I'm not a serious music critic, so for people with a more casual interest I would say that this album is a lot of fun and worthy of your purchase price.

However... the bonus track is not very good at all. It really seems like a lame attempt to take up time on the CD. What it is is another version of Rockit with tons of extra (and might I add, profane) sound bites and samples piled on top of the mix. On my player I always skip this track. But the rest is still pretty cool in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, risk taking album from Herbie Hancock.......2006-04-10

I'd like to defend this album, because between his more mellow jazz albums of the 70s and what he's doing now in 2005-2006, this 1983 album is still one one of my favorites from Herbie Hancock. Herbie took a big risk with going for the hip-hop sound and he succeeded. Every one of the six original songs are dynamite, are edgy and very creative for that period. I still love Rockit, perhaps one of Herbie's finest performances. Its mix of urban jazz and the turntable scratches of hip-hop was very unique. It has some hard hitting beats that could even rival most of Run-DMC and LL Cool J's albums. I couldn't stop playing the 45 single of the single and album versions for several months! It's still played over 2 decades later! The video for that song was phenomenal with the art direction and the marionettes moving to the song's beats. The album's very keyboard oriented, but Hancock kept the jazz style intact on most of the songs. I don't think he sold out,as some purists say. I think this album helped make him a more respected jazz musician and artist later on. Even if the album's massive success took him by surprise, he did it with class and he is still respected today. Very creative, chance-taking and wonderfully performed and done!

4 out of 5 stars Up an Coming.......2001-03-17

Chronic Furture, as a band seems to have matured immensely with their album 4 Elements. Singer Mike Busse in particular brings energy and extraordinary vocals to this cd. The lyrics are all positive, not violent and still cool, which is fairly revolutionary in today's musical world. You have to give ups to anyone that can write such excellent words, put it with music that spread good vibes and is also rocking hard core, all at the same time. These boys have done it. I recommend this to anyone who listens to Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit, but urge everyone to give it a try as Chronic Future defines themselves seperately from any other band out there. I am even more excited to see what they come up with in the future. After hearing this album you know these guys are only going up.

5 out of 5 stars 'Chronic' is no illness.......2004-07-13

This album came to me in a used-record-store 25$ grab bag in 1999. Of the 30 or so cd's stashed inside, this excellent album is the only one that did not get tossed in the rubbish. From the uniquely heavy opening tracks 'Insomniac' & 'Surreal', I was instantly hooked. No snoozer here, as the music style jumped from metal to a sex-pistols' type of anarchist punk in at least 3 anti-police tracks. 'Scottsdale' proves to be the favorite here, with hilarious social commentary in the lyrics giving a full thrashing to the pathetic 'gangsta' scene of the late 90's.
All this combined with tight production & a unique sound makes this a must-have in any rock/alt collection.

4 out of 5 stars Chronic Future know how to party.......1999-12-27

The Collins brothers from this band had a party at their house once, and let me tell you, that scene was crazy. There was more grass there than on all the green plains of Ireland. I mean, really, it got to the point where no one knew what the hell was going on, we were all so bombed.

P.S.: The trampoline was pretty cool too.

I bought this CD after becoming completely enamored with the Ticklejunk All Stars during one of their live performances at Nectar in Seattle where they absolutely killed it. Featuring original beats, funk, hip-hop, house, and acid jazz this album is an intriguing glimps into the future evolution of sound. I was admittedly disappointed when the acid jazz scene from the early 90's never took off, however, the Future Funk Sessions is a dynamic approach to the genre offering a beefed-up style that will be exciting to not only acid jazz enthusiasts but to the mainstream as well. It's already getting quite a lot of play on Seattle's local indie station KEXP and I truly can't recommend this album enough.

From the opening bars of "Wild and Peaceful" (almost a description of the group's style) with its soaring strings, crystalline piano, and flawless vocal harmonies, it's apparent that No Time Like the Future is rich with Incognito's patented blend of soul and finesse. "It Ain't Easy," with its refrain of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On," is a classic funk outcry; "Fearless" is a wordless chant with some great rhythm guitar and booting jazz saxophone; "Nights Over Egypt" backs another great vocal with popping bass and orchestral atmospherics; "Black Rain" mixes exotic drumming with some subliminal dissonance. Producer-composer-guitarist Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick has added string arrangements by Simon Hale, appearances by the horns of the hot Cuban band Irakere, and the performances of small army of R&B singers (Maysa, especially) and British contemporary jazz players (Ed Jones stands out on tenor and soprano). The result is an irresistible combination of strong songs and pulsing rhythm tracks, all polished to slippery perfection. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars "No Time Like the Future" had some good songs on it........2007-05-14

Incognito's album "NO TIME LIKE THE FUTURE" is one of those albums that draws in the listener the moment that he or she begins listening to it, especially if one happens to be a fan of this particular genre of music, or this band, or both. (I'm in the "both" category.) Although this album contains only 10 tracks, quite a number of them are can certainly be classified as ear candy, and others are quite a treat if one is going out or shopping. For instance, we have:

Track 1: "Wild and Peaceful"
General comments: the title pretty much sums up the song title as well as the album as a whole

Track 2: "Get Into My Groove"
General comments: worth repeat earfuls; awesome, top-notch vocals

Track 3: "It Ain't Easy"
General comments: great for shopping

Track 4: "Marrakech"
General comments: such a nice, relaxing and calm background

Track 5: "Fearless"
General comments: The perpetual harmonizing quickly becomes addicting (this aspect of the song adds to it and hence the extra credit) and parts of the background remind me of video game that I used to enjoy playing. The aforementioned harmonization, or one very similar to it, would have done wonders for the song "Jacaranda."

Track 6: "Nights Over Egypt"
General comments: If anything, then the entire album itself is worth buying just for this one song alone. I first heard a condensed David Morales Remix of this song on the band's "BEST OF" album released in 2000. I didn't care much for it at first, but after a while, it just... grew on me. It became something to which I would give a 10, and it made me want to hear this, its original counterpart. This version of the song was pretty much everything that the original lacked and then some. For instance, one is treated to what sounds like a gong between the choruses, whereas in the remixed song, the choruses are pretty much added together with no space in between. However, the main aspect of the remixed song which held my interest was the second half. Here, it is similar, only one is treated to it for a longer duration. As if that weren't enough, the ending features a scatting M. Leak in conjunction with the other leading and backing vocalists. Despite being 7 minutes and 8 seconds, this song goes by very quickly. It is over before one knows it. Whether it is the condensed David Morales remix song found on "BEST OF" or the original song featured here, the second half of "Nights Over Egypt" is ALWAYS the best. I can't stress that enough.

Track 7: "Centre of the Sun"
General comments: great vocalization by Leak (so what else is new?), but somewhat on the slow side

Track 8: "More of Myself"
General comments: another one of those fun-to-listen-to-if-you're-going-shopping songs

Track 9: "I Can See The Future"
General comments: parts of the background of this song are virtually identical to "Jacob's Ladder" of "100º AND RISING." Other aspects of this song's background are calm and serene and parts of this are joined by a variety of saxophones. I can see myself listening to this song on "repeat" a least a couple of times a week from now on (looks like they're not the only ones who can see the future... LOL).

Track 10: "Black Rain"
General comments: You can't go wrong with a title like "Black Rain" and in the background of this song, you can even hear what sounds like pouring rain. It becomes much more audible near the end, however.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE GENIUS.......2004-11-24

I should have written this a long time ago. I'm a huge fan of horn bands. That's what initially drew me into the Incognito circle. Their early albums featured a horn section that wouldn't wait, reminiscent of Tower Of Power, Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago --- with a decidedly funk base. So I got them all.

When this CD came out, I was expecting more of the same horn-driven funk. And what I got was a spiritual experience unlike any other Incognito release up to this point. The horns are there, just more subdued and situated in appropriate slots, but with the emphasis on Bluey's return to his diverse roots. He found Mecca on this musical journey and I'm glad he took us with him. Maysa is featured, but all the vocalists are outstanding.

Even after their latest two CDs have been released, this remains one of my favorite driving music CDs. Every song whips you along in a wave of delight. My personal favorites: "Marrakesh" and "Nights Over Egypt". This CD is an invaluable addition to anyone's collection. It shows Bluey's maturity and range. And it is as Funky as you would expect. I wanted more horns, but I got more body and a more unified sound. Great CD.

they do it best."No Time Like The Future" offers a thankful
alternative to 1999's vapid jazz and R&B by presenting spiritual
lyrics, fantastic production and orchestration and a BAND playing

particurally on the pounding, horn and srting-fueled funk of
"Get Into My Groove" and "I Can See the Future".Smoother grooves

5 out of 5 stars The way a Bhangra CD should sound!.......2004-08-20

Since the rise of DJ Anjali in Portland's DJ scene, I have been on a quest to find great CDs of Bhangra, Punjabi, Bollywood, and Asian Garage, to name a few. Many of the albums I find are alright, the tracks are hit and miss, but overall decent. I continued my quest to find something that resembles Anjali's spins, but felt as though I would only find exactly what I wanted at her shows or at scarce websites like punjabisongs.com.

Last month, in LA, I found this album at Amoeba records and bought it on a whim. The cover looked cool, the DJ list seemed decent, but perhaps the driving force to purchase it was seeing Punjabi MC in the line up. Come to find out later, that although he was the ulitmate decision maker, his track was definitely the weakest in the line up with the constant repition of "I need money, money yo..." Trying to market on a blend of hip hop and Bhangra is fantastic, he did well with Jay-Z, but not in this fairly superficial track.

Nonetheless, the rest of the album is amazing. It's provided me with what I've been looking for on a CD for two years. The Buddha Bars, Punjabi Lounge, Siddharta, Mystic Groove, none of these CD series could provide me with the "dinka dinka dinka" beats and the pounding of the dhols that I continually searched for in CD racks and online.

I have shared this find with friends and co-workers, and whether or not these individuals were familiar with Bhangra or just like the beats, everyone has praised the musical style of Desi Nation. Without a doubt, you should check out this album. It's definitely worth it.
