Excellent.......2007-03-29

I remember my father listening to these songs way back in the late 70s. After hearing them over and over, I got to like them too. Whenever I hear them on the radio now, it always brings good memories. My favorites "Easy," "you bring me up" and "Sail On." These songs are classics. Excellent melodies and vocals.

There are just so many times when it comes to making a good hits package, they can be either good or bad, but the cases with the 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection has been either a considered hit or miss when it comes to showcasing a artist definitively. That has been the case with so many acts like Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart and classic Motown legends like Diana Ross and The Temptations. For The Commodores, the group hasn't been around in years, but there is always the possibility of finding a good hits package all theirs, following the R&B legends from Alabama.

The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenuim Collection is a simple and convient reflection behind one of the most unique R&B groups of the 70's and 80's. The collection does a really good job at highlighting Lionel Richie and company. The songs here are arguably as simple and definitive as you could expect. The compilation includes some great party anthems like Brick House and Machine Gun, as well as classic ballads like their tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson on Nightshift, Sweet Love to even simple ballads like Three Times A Lady and Easy. While there are a lot of great tracks here, there are a couple of disadvantages to the record. One of them is that the album overhadows tracks like the Funk track Girl, I Think The World About You and Zoom. Not only that, but the tracks on the collection weren't remastered as well as well as other collections like the 1997 Ultimate Collection of The Commodores.

Despite a few flaws, The Commodores 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection is a very simple and straight forward reflection of one of the best 70's groups of all time. This is a very inexpensive, but mostly well-thought out reflection of Lionel Richie & Company. If you are on a budget and really want to get your groove on, I absolutely suggest this great album.

More "Lionel Richie" than "Commodores" but..........2005-12-29

This 20th Century Masters is the best I've heard in the whole "20th century" series, but doesn't do too good a job at spanning the Commodores lifespan. Before Lionel Richie became a household name, The Commodores were mostly funk, as can be seen in "Brick House," the group's biggest hit, but beyond that song, the disc doesn't cover that side of the group very well at all.
But, I still give the compilation a perfect 5 star rating, because even though it covers a pretty narrow portion of the band, it covers the BEST portion. Lionel's ballads aren't nearly at the same level of genius as some of Marvin Gaye's or Stevie Wonder's greatest work, but I think they're just as enjoyable. Songs like "Sail On" and "Just To Be Close To You" will simply never get old.
I absolutely love this CD, it's one of the most played in my collection, but if you're looking for a true Commodores overview, you might want to look elsewhere.

You tend to forget just how good the Commodores were, but this perfect collection is a concise reminder of songs that were all over the place 25 years ago, but not so much today. Way back before Lionel Richie became best known as Nicole Richie's pere. Timeless production and great mastering make this one of Motown's better CDs.

Brick Houses.......2006-03-05

There is just so much in this industry these days to where a lot of artists in R&B seem to be more pop oriented, rather than having the feeling of traditional soul. That has been the case with acts like Beyonce', Usher and Mariah Carey. Nevertheless, there are some acts from the past that have absolutely delivered towards what the essence of traditional soul has been like from Motown back in the 70's, and The Commodores were absolutely no acception. Their essential mixture of Funk, R&B and Soul have been a absolute mainstay on the classics of R&B radio, and that feeling Lionel Richie and company have mixed together is all in one convient collection.

The Commodores Ultimate Collection is a fine mixture of the groups most recognized tracks from the 70's. The songs here are just simply the best the soul legends from Alabama had made all of their own. The songs here were remastered very well, and stay as definitive to what made them classics. The album includes tracks ranging from the essence of funk like Machine Gun and the classic party anthem Brick House, to contemporary ballads from Lionel and company that have withstood the test of time like Still, Easy, which was recently used for Levis Jeans, Just To Be Close To You, and Three Times A Lady. While the album does maintain being definitive, many die hard fans were just hoping for a bit more from this collection, but The Ultimate Collection does stand out well enough for newcomers to this legendary R&B group.

It is just sad that Lionel Richie and company of The Commodores haven't done anything new together since they departed back in the eary 80's. Nevertheless, the legacy of these songs is still alive and well. I absolutely love The Ultimate Collection by The Commodores, and you will love this album too just as easy as Sunday morning.

Pure musical Genius- Classic.......2006-01-25

This is one fantastic CD despite a few classics left out.That said, I will focus on one specific song. You could buy this CD for this song only. It is " Nightshift ". It is pure musical Genius. If you know any talented individual who has died before his time, you will understand this song. It is simply heartbreaking. Substitute " Heaven " for Nightshift, and you will understand. It will bring tears to your eyes. Play it 5 or 10 times, and listen for the background vocals . Search Lyrics on Google. It is not just a song, but a tribute to lost souls who needed just a little more time here with us....

I ENJOY THE COMMODORES THEY WERE A GREAT GROUP AND I WISH THAT I COULD GIVE THEM MORE THAN 5 STARS. THEY WERE ABLE TO SING AND DANDCE AND THEY HAD THEIR OWN TRADEMARK STYLE WITH THEIR ELABORATE CLOTHING. AND LIONEL RICHIE HAD HIS DISTINCT TRADEMARK SINGING. Great, but not "The Ultimate.".......2004-05-21

I love The Commodores and this is one awesome collection of songs. They left the full album versions of "Sweet Love" (my favorite Commodores song) and "Zoom." But where is "Sail On?" Where is "Jesus is Love?" The were both huge hits for The Commodores and I can't consider this "Ultimate" with the absence of these songs. I have them on vinyl but, unfortunately, I don't have (and can't afford) a turntable right now. Still this is a good disc and I would consider it a must own.

to Me Personally in terms of a Artist mattering big time with a Group&then Solo only Michael Jackson to me ranks ahead of Lionel Richie in this category. Lionel Richie did it up big time with the Commodores&then Solo. He truly has left a strong Catelog of songs that are timeless. on this double Compilation these Songs showcase a Artist who Dominated 2 decades which to me is the mark of a truly Great Artist. a Good to Very Good Artist can run a Decade if everything goes right,but to have two strong decades as Lionel Richie did is truly amazing. as a Songwriter Lionel Richie is way up there. His Lyrics are something else.his musical stylings touched on so many styles&themes. the Classics such as "Just to Be Close to you",Easy,Truly,You are,"Hello"(Which that video is still timeless&Everytime a Lady would call me I'd use that pick up,Hello!!!!! is it me your looking for??) Great Collection&Full running time. Lionel's Music covers R&B,Pop,Country&Gospel. Lionel was hitting some notes back in the day which he never fully gets his due on. also The Man could write some bridges in songs. A great collection of songs by a great artist. It is so nice to see a greatest hits collection that features all the original full length album versions. I am a big music fan and I hate when greatest hits collections are released with the "watered down" radio versions. It would have been nice if Universal could have tracked down the 12" version of Brickhouse, But hey, I'm not complaining. The sound quality is fantastic as well.

Let's hope Universal releases more greatest hits packages with more full length album versions.

The one to get if you want all of the (full length) classics........2007-02-28

There are songs included on this double CD set that I had not heard in years. They are all full length songs remastered to sound great. Get this one if you are a fan of both Lionel Ritchie and of the Commodores. It's outstanding! Cool CD jacket too!

Brick Houses.......2006-04-11

The Soul & R&B today doesn't really have a unique distinction for what made the sights and sounds of the classic Motown era. It definitely is quite a shame, because there are so many people in this generation who are more interested in Lindsay Lohan, Ashanti, and Beyonce' that haven't discovered classic soul from one of the most legendary eras. The same is sadly said for The Commodores. Throughout three decade of Funk, Soul, Pop, and R&B, Lionel Richie, Walter Orange and company have made some of the most irrestible hits ever showcased. Their unique blends of harmonies and songs have truly shaped the era of feel good music, and now it is stretched into one unique anthology.

The Commodores: Anthology is a well-recognized reflection of one of the most unique acts to have ever discovered out of the 70's. The double album deliver well in showcasing the classic Motown vibe, and reintroducing so much from classics of the past. The collection includes some great guilty pleasure delights like the classic party track Brick House, Lady (You Bring Me Up), their breakthrough smash Machine Gun, and laid back mellow ballads like Easy, Still, Just To Be Close To You, and the soulful Three Times A Lady. The album does a great job delivering everything that The Commodores had from beginning to end, while letting listeneres have a vivid imagination to Funk, Soul and Pop into one. Not bad for a group of guys from Tuskegee, Alabama.

The Commodres: Anthology is a fantastic compilation for die hard Motowns fanatics, and Commodres followers young and old. It is definitely worth the purchase. Howvever, if you are not interested into this great double disc storyteller, I definitely would suggest their '97 Ultimate Collection instead.

Solid, Festering Funk..........2005-07-21

Mid-tempo grooves, poignant slow jams and the tasty love songs! Over the years, Motown has made some major missteps when re-issuing classic music, but this time around they actually hit the Bulleye! Even if you weren't around when these guys originally laid this material down, you can still enjoy it. If you want to catch Lionel before he became the "lovey dovey pop musical king" of the 80's, then you need to cop this double disc set of pure "Commodore" Heaven.

It is continuous enjoyment and listening pleasure...from the ever chart popular songs: Brickhouse, Lady (You Bring Me Up), Sweet Love and Night Shift to the less radio played but nonetheless spittin' fire tunes: High on Sunshine, Say Yeah, Fancy Dancer and Come Inside! Just check the harmonizning on "High On Sunshine." Phew! There is but one song missing I would have loved to have in the collection and that is the dynamite instrumental "Rapid Fire" from their "Machine Gun" album.

Nevertheless, you can not go wrong purchasing this package of pure, smoldering, TNT! I guarantee, you'll either be blowing the roof off the sucker, grooving and swaying or simply chilling depending upon what song is playing. I can guarantee you this too, when you do listen, you will not be disappointed and you'll take a trip to your past, while enjoying the present! Also, for a "live" feel of these fellas..pick up there "Commodores Live" Cd. I waited years for that gem to be re-issued and it was worth the very long wait!

The Commodores were the consumate Pop/Funk Dance music band that had it all... The Look, the voices, the harmonies, the horns... All of it in a tight knit, correographed musical explosion! This anthology of the Commodores is everything it should be and more. I will say that Lionel Richie was at his best with the Commodores and by the same token, THEY were at their best before he left! So many great songs on here, the most complete Commodores compilation. A must for 70's r & b/soul/funk lovers!

This is such a great live set!
I remember back in the day I would be playing the Wild Cherry version of "I feel sanctified" do a seamless mix into the live Commodores version on this album, let it ride into the next song "Brick House" and mix that seamlessly into the studio version of Brick House. It was some of my best work of the day! Kids screaming and dancing and having the time of our lives. It's all good! (Just Like this CD)

I am an old school R & B guy and actually went and saw the Commodores in concert several times in the late 70's and early 80's. This CD brought back some great memories!

Live in 1977.......2004-05-19

One of the truly outstanding live albums of all time. The guys recorded this at the height of their beginning into a supergroup. All of the early classics are here. You will feel as if you are right there back in Atlanta in 1977. The guys are having a lot of fun and it is evident in their live show which has always been a staple of the Commodores. If only they would do a reunion tour (sorry J.D. original members only). These songs are too good to never be heard live again. If you don't have this in your collection, get it soon while it is still available. This is a must have.

A trip back in time...........2004-03-28

My older sister had this album when I was a kid. The Commodores were LARGE back then, I mean, everything they touched turned to gold. I am so glad this is on CD for me to own. This is one of the most enjoyable live CDs that I own, just all around fun to listen to. These guys knew how to rock a party, and on a dime, slow it down to make it romantic and mellow.

The CD kicks off with a fantastic high-energy version of "Won't You Come Dance With Me", and that sets the tone for everything you hear afterwards. You can hear and feel the excitement the Commodores were giving out, and the love the crowd was giving right back to them. I especially loved the live versions of the funk/jazz groove of "Funny Feelings" and the hit "Just To Be Close To You"...at the end Lionel Richie and Clyde Orange do some gorgeous doo-wop harmony! It has to be heard to be believed, their voices sound so good together!

Other standouts are "Fancy Dancer" (which breaks into a hot dancehall beat at midpoint!), "Sweet Love" (another harmonic masterpiece - look out, Temptations! Clyde hits a high falsetto note that reaches to the rafters - whoa!), "Zoom" and "Easy". I loved how the guys go from "I Feel Sanctified" into a bangin' ten minute version of "Brick House"...and they have the "Brick House" contest, another high point of the recording. I found myself laughing along with the guys! I loved the friendly stage rivalry between Lionel and Clyde...hey yall, you REALLY need to reunite and show every just WHY yall got the name "The Funkiest Band In The Land"! You have so many fans out here who would love for that to happen. Just like Lionel said on this live version of "Sweet Love"...yall reached your goals TOGETHER...which is where yall need to be now...BACK TOGETHER!

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes live concert recordings. You'll feel like you were back in 1977 and partying along with the crowd, I know I did! A must have.

the real commodres.......2004-03-13

This album is truly the best the commodores recording. To define a group or singer to real talent a live recording will tell the truth. The harmony and togetherness of this group can not be found any more defined than with this recording. Truly a real joy to listen to this great cd over and over again.

I will be the first to go see a reunion tour and buy whatever recording that they put out............

A funky album!.......2007-02-07

Yes,this is a funky album featuring two Top 10 hits,BRICK HOUSE and EASY. It was 1977 and disco was very much dominating the music world even with some white artists like The Bee Gees and K.C. & The Sunshine Band. Lionel Richie,the Commodores' staple member brings fans the nice,subtle piece EASY(for those who can't stand funk will like that track). BH really rocks,funkily. BH is a popular favorite amongst many infamous cover bands,whether their forte(s) is/are pop,rock or soul(those categories inarguably describe the style of Daryl Hall and John Oates). The Commodores put out four more albums following this one and Richie would then leave for a successful solo career(his first three solo releases were best-selling megahits). The Commodores carried on for a few years without Richie,possibly with a replacement for him. Fans of the Commodores are also fans of The Gap Band,Kool & The Gang,Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio and Chic.

Commodores cross over, but are still funky.......2005-01-10

The year was 1977 - and this was the album that turned the Commodores into certifiable superstars in the crossover and commercial market. Not that they weren't popular before - they had a huge R&B following, consistently amazing albums, and some pop music success, but nothing like it was after this album was released. 1977 was the year that the group embarked upon a massive nationwide tour, and their audience grew and grew to monumental proportions. This album was flying off the shelves in the music stores. Three of the songs from it that would go on to be classics were responsible for that. Ad campaigns, movie and TV roles for the funk sextet from Alabama followed as a result.

1977...we had not yet lost Lionel Richie to the pop world, so we get some wonderful funk jams and ballads penned by him and his Commodore brothas in this self-titled album, their fifth. They had not yet compromised the sound that made them famous (that wasn't until 1978), so that's what makes this CD such a triumph. Opening with "Squeeze The Fruit" and closing out with the unlikely #1 R&B smash, "Easy" (I say unlikely because "Easy" might as well had been a country/western song), COMMODORES is a perfect example of just how versatile these guys were. It also includes "Brick House" (what more can be said about this Southern-fried funk smash that still moves the crowd today - except that too many people think that Lionel Richie sang lead...nope! It's the group's drummer/percussionist, Walter "Clyde" Orange on lead vocals, you know, the short guy with the glasses) and "Zoom"...you'll want to fly away too, because hearing this song takes you to another time and place...gorgeous!!! "Patch It Up" should have been a single on its own; it's a rumbling slice of funk that is written by group keyboardist Milan Williams, whom IMO, was the best lyricist in the group.

I love all the songs on the album. There are several that should have received more attention, like "Won't You Come Dance With Me", "Funky Situation" and especially the R&B/funk ballads "Funny Feelings" and "Heaven Knows". Although I enjoy "Funny Feelings", it does tend to lumber along just a little bit. The version of that song from the guys' incredible live album released later that year is much better and absolutely a MUST HAVE! "Heaven Knows" shows the growing potential of Lionel as a romantic composer, even though at this point he had not opted to go the sweet, syrupy route with his lyrics and production. We had seen it the year before on the hit single "Just To Be Close To You" from HOT ON THE TRACKS (1976), and this is basically a continuation of that theme. Starting off with a mellow R&B groove, it then goes into a raunchy vamp, and then back to being mellow...and then the change comes at you again.

Check this CD out and you too will have to agree that the Commodores were one of the best funk bands of the 1970s...before Lionel had solo aspirations, and they were all into having a good time. Squeeze the fruit, give up the juice and enjoy!!! Owww!!

Caught In The Transition!.......2004-07-25

By 1977 The Commodores became known for songs like
"Easy" and "Zoom",both mushy ballads to be found here.On the
other end "Squeeze Th Fruit" and "Funky Situation" lean too far
into funk-by-numbers stylings and don't stand out as much more
then album filler.This is where The Commodores funk tunes
began to become songless album tracks,bar the bands stunning
theme song "Brick House",clearly the best thing on the record.
So I baught this expecting a consistant album on a par with
"Brick House" and ended up with an uneven collection,but that was a vinyl LP with a poster.So why would you want the CD?Because it's available I suppose.

Welcome Superstars!.......2004-02-01

I think this is one of the best albums that the commodores have done. The single that was released "EASY", seemed to be the record that shot them in to superstardom. Followed by "BRICK HOUSE". Their combination of funky rythums and the ballads of Lionel Richie always seemed to work. Another album that is not mentioned is "Midnight Magic". This is got to be another master piece by the commodores. Out of all the albums the they have done. In my opinion, these two albums seems to be their absolute best.

By far, easily the best album by them in the 70's. The next being "Hot on the tracks" the year before. The give us a little bit of everything on this album. FUNK ON.....FUNK ON!

Excellent starter album for new fans of the Commodores, this collection features the essential, signature hits from 1974-81, as well as 2 never-before-released tracks, including the mid-tempo R&B/Funk of "Painted Picture" (vocals by J.D. Nichoals) and "Reach High" (used for an early '80s television sitcom). Small, simple collection of high quality classics.

Worthy Starting Point.......2004-11-11

This collection is a great starting point for anyone interested in this group. The sound quality might not stand up to some of the more recent remastered discs and even modest fans will prefer the more extensive Ultimate Collection. Still, this disc contains most of the classics, including Easy, Brick House and Machine Gun, and it's all the Commodores many folks will ever need.

Hey if you generally only know The Commodores for their Commodores and the hit "Easy" then 'Machine Gun' will blow you away!The Commodores in 1974 were a very different kind of band.Having opened for the Jackson 5 for many years the band had got their rhythm section cooking and fasioned a very chunky funk sound filled with the fattest wah-wah possible,clapping drums,the RAPID FIRE clavinet riffing and SHRIEKING synthesizer bursts of Milan Williams and horns with punch-you-out impact!And from the classic title song,it's equal masterpiece "Rapid Fire" on through "Young Girls Are My Weakness","I Feel Sanctified","The Bump" and the MESSED UP "Gonna Blow Your Mind" and "Superman" this album NEVER LEAVES the territory of that heavy,nasty,catchy RAW uptempo 70's funk!The band do take a little break from the nonstop funk barrage for the dancable soul of "The Assembly Line","There's A Song In My Heart" and the quirky "The Zoo (The Human Zoo)" with it's light latin refrain.Aside from the now almost impossible to find Caught in the Act and Hot on the Tracks this is BAR NONE the most full on funky album The Commodores ever made.While 'Machine Gun' has plenty of variety and plenty to sing along with you won't find one ballad or smooth groove here whatsoever.And you won't be complaining either!

Before the sellout years the Commadores were a chunky,horn
heavy funk band who debut with this album,containing two fine
instrumentals in the hit title song and "Rapid Fire".The quircky
"Zoo (The Human Zoo)" points to the bands good sence of humor.
Further more this album contains no ballads at all and is filled
with sweaty horns,yoweling vocals from Lionel Riche and alot
of staccato clavinet spats!But BOY do times change!

Motown's answer to EWF and the Ohio Players...........2004-05-03

During the early to mid-'70s, funk bands ruled the R&B world. This was not lost on Motown, and they wanted an act that covered the down and dirty funk/R&B bases like Maurice White's Earth, Wind and Fire and the Ohio Players did. They discovered the Commodores, a sextet straight out of the Dirty South (Tuskegee, Alabama) in a New York City nightclub, and they found their answer.

MACHINE GUN was the group's second album on Motown (their first one was recorded in '72 but never released), and signaled that this group was an important force to be reckoned with. Featuring the amazing keyboard wizardry of Milan Williams, this album kicks off with the title cut and grabs you from start to finish! The three lead vocalists' voices (that's right, not just Lionel's) are wonderfully soulful and earthy, especially drummer Walter "Clyde" Orange's voice!! That brotha, all 5'4" of him, is SOUL PERSONIFIED!! Lionel did go on to become the most famous of all the Commodores, but Clyde was the FUNKIEST by far.

I especially loved "Gonna Blow Your Mind", "The Bump", "Young Girls Are My Weakness", "I Feel Sanctified" and "The Assembly Line" (the last of which has been sampled by hip-hoppers time and time again, and musically similar to a later tune that Lionel Richie wrote on his own, the popular "This Is Your Life"). Lots of syntheziers and horns (courtesy of Lionel on alto sax and William King on trumpet) drive this CD and you'd never guess back then that these guys could come funkier than this...but they did, even more so because their follow up album to this, CAUGHT IN THE ACT, is even better!

Pick this up today and believe me when I say, the mighty, mighty Commodores existed long before "Brick House", "Three Times A Lady" and "Still" and why they will always be a funk band first and foremost in my book. This CD is living proof! Get it!

This is some Phunk 4 ya!!.......2003-05-17

This was the first album ever realeased by the Commodores. After hearing various songs from it played on "The History of Funk" radio show here in the SF Bay Area, I dug up this album a few years ago in a record shop because it's THAT FUNKY.

It's now on CD for all to hear and get down to. Keyboardist Milan Williams was the real breakout artist on this album..."Rapid fire" is one of the illest, funkiest synthesizer jams ever made. The title track was a breakthrough of early synthesizer use for it's time as well, and was the album's only actual hit at the time of it's release, despite it's later "shameful" use in the movie Boogie Nights but...I'm telling you, almost every song on this album is funky and great. "Assembly Line" has a classic breakbeat with "Ho's!" that has been sampled/scratched by untold hip hop DJ's and producers over the years...If you're any kind of Hip Hop fan you'll go "Oh Yeah, so that's where that's from!" as soon as you hear it. "Blow Your mind" is also real funky. "Superman" and "Song in my heart" is where you can hear Lionel Ritchie's earliest gospel oriented strong singing. All in all, this is a "lost classic" of sorts. Almost all the songs here have a happy funky 70's sound, yet almost none of these songs have ever made it onto any Funk or Old school compilations. Trust me, it's a great slab of 70's funk, especially "Rapid Fire"

this is some funk 4sho young kids hearing this who grew up off lionel richie's solo stuff won't believe he had some funk up in his bones at one time get this and plus this whole cd has 2 of the original funkadelics eddie hazel and billy bass nelson in this no wonder the commodores were funky they've been maggotized.

Both as a founder member of the Commodores as well as a solo artist, Lionel Richie is one of the best singers/composers/performers from "the miraculous MOTOWN Hit Maker". This import compilation has a very good selection from both stages in LR career, including the wonderful hits "Easy", "Brick House", the nice and funky instrumental "Machine Gun", "Stuck On You", "Hello", "Do It To Me" (single version), "Love Will Conquer All" and more. If you're planning to go into Lionel Richie's magnificent career in music, this CD is definitely for you.

Lionel Richie is One of the Few Artists who truly did it the right way both as a member of a very Successful Band&then later on as a Solo Artist. He understood what Words&Music was truly all about. his material covered R&B,Pop,Gospel&country. He didn't sound like anybody else&just always understood the power of using the Bridge in his music. the Man is One of the All time Greatest Artists as a Singer,Songwriter&all around force. so many great songs that truly stand the test of time. this is what a Double Set is all about. Lionel Richie is One of My All Time Favorite Artists.
