5 out of 5 stars F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best punk albums.......2006-01-25

actual punk comin out of boston. it must be a miracle.

4 out of 5 stars Step in a better direction.......2005-08-02

I'm not sure why this band signed to a major but that probably has a lot to do with the direction of
their sound on this release. If you think of what typically happens when a band signs to a major,
they usually expand on their most radio friendly elements and "Black Tape" is no exception.
There's an emphasis on big sing along choruses and big melodic hooks accompanied by a big
polished sound that's perfect for the soundtrack of an MTV show (oh wait, they already did that.)

You can see this change most dramatically on the re-work of "No Revolution" which also
appeared on their last record. They slowed it down a bit, added a new guitar track ringing out the
chords along with the original guitars and ended it with a solo that's no where to be found on the
original. These type of changes are sure to piss some fans off but I think it really adds a level of
distinction and character to their sound that they only briefly hinted at on a few songs on their
previous album. This is pretty surprising as usually bands get more generic when they sign to a
major but I really think they came into a unique sound here.

Of course any punk band slowing down and trying to write better songs is usually asking for
trouble as Face To Face found out after their "Ignorance Is Bliss" album but The Explosion keep
enough of their harder edged past in place to satisfy most longtime fans. They also don't attempt
any ill-fated ballads or try to stretch into pure pop. Most of the cuts here are faster paced,
energetic pop punk songs that retain the spirit of their previous work but add a layer of stellar
lead guitar work atop a more dynamic, varied sound. This emphasis on more melodic leads and
a less frenetic, less generic punk sound makes all the difference in this band making the leap
from good to great. With "Black Tape" they went from being a pretty good punk band to an
exceptional punk influenced rock band.

Of course I'm sure this album didn't sell very well as it's too hard for the radio and maybe not
punk enough for the die-hards so it will be interesting to see what direction they take after this.
Will they retreat to their older, more punk sound like Face To Face or stick it out? Only time will tell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too much soul (especially for the price ! ! !).......2007-05-05

This is a great compilation of early 70's SOUL sides - - You'll feel like its 1974 all over again and you're listen to some really good Black AM radio (o.k. I was quite young then, but still I'm a big fan of the air checks!) - - Though the artists aren't quite obscure, they are rare enough that finding them all together on one CD makes this is super/must have find for fans of soul that is sweet yet funky at the same side... groups include Crown Heights Affair, The Honey Cone, Chairmen of the Board, Fatback, Lamont Dozier - - sort of a roster full of groups that had their moments, especially in the era when the Philly International sound was setting the standards and EVERYONE was copying it- - This CD is great because it stands out in stark contrast to the "rare funk"/funky break beat that have the rare gritty stuff that DJs wet their pants to hear at one extreme of the spectrum and in contrast the over-reissued "greatest hits of the 70's" type compilations (that all have the same tunes and groups) - - walking a much sweeter road this CD catches a lot of groups that at one time were pretty mainstream in the world of Black Radio and dance music, but today at best are either long disbanded or oldies circuit rarities - - to put it more simply, if you came up listening to this music, you'll probably remember a lot of the stuff, as well as hear a few tunes you always wondered "Who did that?" - - and if you're new the sound, you'll definitely get an education.

All in all, if you're a fan of Curtis, Leroy Hutson, Willie Hutch, the O'Jays (and again, definitely the Philly sound) - - welcome to one of the most PLEASING compilations you'll ever here... In the meantime, when in the world is Don Cornelius going to reisuse all those '70s SOUL TRAIN episodes which were playing in repeat several years ago here in Japan?

I've only listen to one song and that was "It's so hard to get along" by Dottie Peoples. As I was listening to the song tears just started running down my cheeks because the words in her song is my life experience. No matter how hard I try my best to please people and myself at the same time its always someone whos ungreatful and satisfied. That song really lift my spirits in the lord and made me call on him more.
