    Album Description

Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) is a devoted housewife and mother of ten in the 1950s. Her husband (Woody Harrelson) can't seem to make ends meet, but that doesn't stop the car from breaking down, the mortgage coming due and the bills from piling up. It falls to Evelyn to defy the conventions of the day and find a way to keep her family together with the odds stacked against them. Applying her remarkable resourcefulness and an uncommon wit, Evelyn finds her own way in the profitable jingle contests popular in the 1950s and'60s.

Composer John Frizzell adds his own sophisticated sound to the compositions and brings on two great musicians - Sara and Sean Watkins - to play fiddle and guitar. The Soundtrack includes recordings by The Ames Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Dee Carstensen, Kay Starr and new recordings by k.d. lang "I'm Sitting on top of the World" and the film's Woody Harrelson.

The Simon and Schuster book The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less (by Terry Ryan) is currently available.

4 out of 5 stars Lockhart's Debut Recording with the Boston Pops.......2004-08-13

RUNNING WILD is collection of Glenn Miller favorites and is Keith Lockhart's debut recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The musical quality is good. While it does not demonstrate the style that Lockhart would later develop with the orchestra, it certainly offers glimpses of what is to come. Perhaps the recording's strongest tracks are the musical numbers with guests: John Pizzarelli and the King Singers, especially the album's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". One of Lockhart's greatest strengths is selecting guests to accompany the orchestra and this album is a foretaste of what is later to come, particularly on the Celtic and Mexican collections released later in Lockhart's tenure. While the album is good, and Lockhart seems to enjoy conducting these Big Band pieces, his rendition of "In the Mood" is missing something, which is surprising since this work is such a staple at Pops concerts, but even a not quiet the best rendition of any piece by the Boston Pops is still far better than much of what is available.

5 out of 5 stars "Runnin' Wild" will get you "In the Mood" for Big Band tunes.......2003-11-08

When John Williams stepped down as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra after 14 successful seasons, the talented young Keith Lockhart was chosen as his replacement. Looking more like a college freshman than music director of one of America's most famous orchestras, Lockhart has proved to be just as adept and popular as Williams and the late Arthur Fiedler.

1996's Runnin' Wild is a collection of songs made famous by Big Band era orchestra leader Glenn Miller, whose civilian and later Army Air Force bands provided audiences with music to dance to (and love to) before and during World War II. Before his mysterious death in December 1944, Miller's band and featured vocalists gave the world such beloved swing standards as "In The Mood," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "A String of Pearls," and his signature theme, "Moonlight Serenade."

Listen to this album, close your eyes, and the Boston Pops Orchestra transports you back to the 1940s, with young men in uniform dancing with either their wives, sweethearts, or USO girls to the fast-paced "Runnin' Wild"...gently swaying the sweet "A String of Pearls" (featured in the film The Glenn Miller Story)...or sharing that last sweet bit of lovemaking to the slow beat of "Moonlight Serenade."

Of the 16 selections, "Moonlight Serenade" is the one I am most familiar with, having heard it as incidental music or "source" material in so many World War II movies or documentaries. It's slow, gentle, romantic yet sensual, and it's the only "Glenn Miller" song actually written by the bandleader. Originally titled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep," it was a big hit in 1939 and was the theme song for both Miller's and Tex Beneke's bands. The Pops' performance of it captures its air of nostalgia perfectly, and the clarinet solo by Thomas Martin is simply fabulous.

Modern standards singer John Pizzarelli and The King's Singers show their stuff on several tracks, most vividly so in "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," which was another chart-topping hit for Miller in 1941, the year the U.S. entered World War II. Pizzarelli has a way of channeling the great vocalists of the era, with his easy-to-listen voice and flawless delivery. The King's Singers are wonderful backup in other songs, including "Serenade in Blue" and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo."

As a soloist, Pizzarelli shines in the more romantic (and slower) "The Nearness of You," a song that might have been on a serviceman's mind when reading a letter from his wife or girlfriend.

Another sentimental favorite where Pizzarelli performs well is 1940's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," a song introduced in Britain and popularized not only by Glenn Miller but also Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kay.

Several genres also get the Glenn Miller treatment, such as opera (Verdi's "The Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore), vaudeville ("My Blue Heaven") blues ("The St. Louis Blues March") and even Russian traditional songs ("Volga Boatmen").

So if you want to get "In the Mood" and have a good time listening to a fun Boston Pops Orchestra album, Runnin' Wild is definitely worth getting.

    5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-11-02

I bought this CD three days ago and it hasn't left my CD player since. There is nothing like waking up and putting on "In the Mood" to start your day, or listening to "Moonlight Serenade" to end it.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, but lose the cover.......2000-05-31

The Pops are a Boston institution. They have been a tradition for many and familiar to most. I have been to the Pops probably as often as to Fenway Park. I like both and find great comfort in each.

What happens with much of what the Pops attempt here is goofy. The cover art, is I presume, similar to the old Arthur Fiedler covers where he wore a funny coat or hat and tried to look less symphonic and more silly. Give it up.

The strength of the Pops is the traditional, predictable format and arrangements that are as easy to identify as your own child. That too is the unfortunate part of the Pops. There needs to be a little something new here.

So if you enjoy the traditional string arrangements and percussion of the Pops this will not disappoint you. If you are trying to get a youngster excited about this music you might more easily find an elevator and listen to the musak.

Classical arrangements, novelty music and patriotic songs are the best the Pops can provide. The swing music just doesn't do it for me.

Runnin' wild? Maybe with a walker.

5 out of 5 stars Swing at its best!.......2000-01-08

I'll tell you a little story about this CD from Keith Lockhart. I'm a baby-boomer brought up on swing and am constantly looking for quality big band recordings. I bought this album several years ago when it was first released and I loved it. Whenever I played it at home, my 18 y/o daughter gave me the business about my "old fogey" music. One day, however, I happened to come home unexpectedly and there she was in the family room with "String of Pearls" at nearly full volume. I bought her the album when she went to college and she says that she's since converted nearly half the dorm to swing. This is probably the best recording of big band sounds ever. Also look at "Pops Stoppers" which is half big band tunes and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Both are excellent as well.

THIS IS ONE OF PATTI'S BEST ALBUM.MY FAVORITES ARE OH PEOPLE, KISS AWAY THE PAIN, ON MY OWN, AND OTHERS. THIS IS A FANTASTIC ALBUM. PATTI DID A GREAT JOB ON THIS ALBUM I REALLY DO ENJOY THIS ALBUM AND I RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES PATTI TO PURCHASE THIS ALBUM. IT IS A VERY NICE ALBUM TO HAVE IN YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Patti at her best during the '80s!!!.......2004-09-07

This album still is a favorite to me! I like how the message-driven Oh People weaves into On My Own and then to the funky Something Special and to the bridge-heavy Kiss Away...,and to the no-nonsense Twisted. Patti sings in diva like fashion with her soulful voice on here. Only the last two songs don't grab me as much since there's so much solid material on here. But this album from 1986 is Patti at her best during that decade and solidified her as a well received singer to this day! Richard Perry, even after producing several successful Pointer Sisters albums and other artists, should be commmended for producing this album for Patti. I'd get that album or CD version of it again if I wanted to hear it! It's so very well done--she makes us a winner in us by having us hear it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Since Her Debut!.......2004-07-16

The title song of 'Winner In You' is pleasantly theatrical and I have plenty of fond childhood memories of "On My Own" but, once again Patti cooks best on her uptempo dance songs and there are some great ones here!"Something Special (Is Gonna Happen Tonight" and "Twisted" both shine in the same, brassy
synth-soul vein of "New Attitude" whitch is something this lady
has plenty of.Patti's "Greatest Hits" collections are recommended
highly but as albums go this and her 1977 Epic debut are the only
available full-lengh Patti Labelle albums you'll ever need!

5 out of 5 stars Don't overlook some of the tracks on this one.......2003-02-03

'Winner in You' is a great CD. Now you may be thinking, 'Why buy this CD when I can buy a greatest hits compilation?". To that I will say there are some tracks here not available on Patti's greatest hits CDs that should not be missed. Of course everyone knows 'On My Own'. But don't over look the power of 'Oh People', and the sweetness of 'Kiss Away the Pain'. Those tracks are not to be missed.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars heavenly music.......2002-09-12

A truly magnificient album with both depth and beauty. Angelika has a wonderful voice combining innocence with technical skilfullness. And although this is a "new Age" influenced version of the old hindu-chants she really stays close to the roots. Truly transmiting a sense of something holy. There has been some great mantra-recordings in recent years with artist like Krishna Das and Deva Premal, none the less Angelika is somehow in a league of her own. I simply love this record. Great for both healing and meditation.

    5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Devotion.......2001-12-30

Mellow and restful voice and music, professionally sung and played; I shall use this disc for meditation, healing sessions and background music for daily activities. Westernized in style while still retaining sacred intent. I bought this disc without hearing it first and am quite pleased with this selection. Om, Ananda Rasa!

Dr. Alsop is a truly gifted man. No two ways about this. I have had the pleasure of hearing him perform and his songs are timely, timeless and very catchy and uplifting. He imparts serious, thought provoking messages in all of his works and any one of these songs could stand on its own merit.

I highly recommend this work. This collection will leave you thinking and wanting to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs for Kids (and Moms).......2003-08-30

Peter Alsop's songs are perfect for not-so-perfect kids. My son and I listened to this collection many times over the years and just had a great time. The important message of a song like "Chickens for Peace" has the right blend of sassy humor (a marching song for chickens) and the promotion of the great ideal of laying down one's pride to "stand" for peace. Peter does it well. He's talented and funny, sassy and smart. He touches the heart without sentimentality. Just Terrific!

I think its Tiffany Evans who will make it as a star and will be a hit for everyone! She is already my favorite singer now. She sounds much better than any other female singer on this planet and I'm determined to be exactly like her. She is only 12 yet she sounds like shes 24! She is going to be a superstar and she could probably replace Whitney Houston anyday. She rocks! As for Spencer Day, to be honest I really don't care for him! Forget Spencer Day. Listen to Tiffany Evans, the girl who rocks! Don't listen to Spencer Day, the guy who sucks.

4 out of 5 stars When Is His CD Coming Out.......2005-02-15

Spencer Day is the first performer I've heard in a long time on reality television who is actually talented in ways besides having a good voice. Sure, Star Search limited his music to the basic standards to sell CD's, but check out his music on his website and you will be stunned. His songwriting abilities surpass Elton John. It amazes me that people like Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum are famous... and he is still working his way up. Whoever is posting here that Spencer sucks must have no musical talent or ear whatsoever. Seriously. It's almost funny- but not.

5 out of 5 stars To the reviewer below.......2004-07-04

You must be kidding! Spencer can't sing to save his life! It's a miracle he even made it to the finals! I guess just because he knows how to play the piano they wanted something different. As for Tiffany, she was the best performer on there. She may be a kid but there's nothing "kiddie" about her voice! Spencer is absolutely no competetion for her and it's like a joke that he's on the same CD with her! I think some of you guys who are hating on Tiffany are just jealous of her success.

4 out of 5 stars Spencer is "Wonderful", Tiffany is just another kid singer.......2004-04-29

Not a big fan of kid singers (think their voices need to be developed more), but at least the listener can hear a touch of the multi-talented Spencer Day. I had to take off a star because of the kid. (sorry)

1 out of 5 stars HOW LOW can you GO !.......2004-04-14

Spencer Day and Lil' Tiffany Evans are the current "flash in the pans" from Reality Television. Both song selections are dull when placed in the hands of these want to be artists. Evans manages to iritate more than Day simply due to the bad vocal guidance. She attempts to "Houston Up" her vocal performance...and badly falling very short. Anyone listening to this single with an average sound system will find it quite painful (after reviewing the bias remarks on this Amazon board; one can tell from the posts that her parents and grandparents are proud stage parents, however, the audience is far from being won over no matter who is backing this flawed project with massive amounts of funds).
