Their remake of "Killing Me Softly" was the hit, but that's only the beginning of the story. A hip-hop trio whose talents reach out into the world of the pop song (Wyclef Jean is a fine guitar player, and Lauryn Hill's a heck of a singer), the Fugees are also all distinctive, inventive rappers--you find yourself waiting for each of them to take the next verse in turn. The beats are the familiar crossed-armed boom-bip, but the group's understated grooves and subtle effects lie low in the mix. Aside from two kicky covers of classics (the other is Marley's "No Woman, No Cry"), The Score's focus is on the stars' rhyming with the free-form grace of performance poets and showing that they've thought deeply about the issues they raise. --Douglas Wolk

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The sound quality is great and gives me the chills with certain stanzas. I love it and plan to listen to it for a very long time. I've known about Christen Chenoweth. She's pretty top notch and the actress playing opposite is gang-busters! What a voice! Such passion. I'm sure we'll all be very familiar with her name soon!

A hint for those who love classic storytelling: Any time you see a synopsis starting "In this Postmodern, Feminist retelling of...", run for the hills. I saw the musical Wicked at LA's Pantages theater with my family. While my girls (ages 11 and 13) thought it was OK, and I loved the Victorian sci-fi settings, costumes and such, the story about how the Wicked Witch of the West was really just a brilliant, misunderstood animal rights activist persecuted by the Evil George W. Bu... er, Wizard of Oz, who is using her imaginary "terror" as a pretext for turning Oz into a police state, had me grinding my teeth throughout. That said, the performances were generally great or at least good (except for the guy who played Fiyero, who couldn't carry a tune), in some cases superior to those on the official cast CD. My girls have had the CD in the car stereo on and off for the last few days, prompting this review. As a general observation, the music and lyrics are sub-par for a hit musical, with very few memorable melodies or lyrical turns of phrase. Virtually every number has a long, meandering preamble that morphs into the "song" in precisely the same way. The standouts for me were "Popular," a cute take on High School-College social climbing that has a nice, syncopated feel, and "I'm Not That Girl," a beautifully restrained and meloncholy meditation on life and love. "Defying Gravity," the big set-piece number, has a soaring chorus, but I defy anyone to hum, or even identify the verse melody. The rest of the tunes have a Broadway by-the-numbers feel that leaves me cold.

Like the book and the play, the Wicked soundtrack is mystical and magical. The cast is amazing and Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are enchanting. I recommend the soundtrack to anyone and everyone who loves a great musical fantasy. This is one soundtrack that truly sends you back to OZ. I never liked a whole album of music before Wicked. It is one CD I completely love.

Wickedly disappointing.......2007-07-20

Actually, I'd give it no stars. But Amazon is too charitable. Couldn't the house have fallen on the Wicked Witch in the first scene. "Wicked" is disappointing. It's as if the pyrotechnics, a la "Starlight Express," can make up for the lack of songwriting and original score. It's derivative. It's laughable in non-comedic sense. Its an incredible money machine for some reason. At least I feel for the actors who deserve the continuing paychecks. But I need a few magic monkies to fly in and pickup some of the teenies in the audience who always manage to use their cells they are so bored. Wave your magic wand! Make it all disappear. "Mommie, Mommie, rescue me." "Sorry, babe, Glendora told you to turn off your cells!."

For its fifth cinematic installment, the Harry Potter franchise gets a new composer as England's Nicholas Hooper (a usual collaborator of new director David Yates) succeeds Patrick Doyle and John Williams. The screeching electric guitar that suddenly irrupts on the very first track, "Fireworks," lets the listener know that all is not quiet on the Hogwarts front. The kiddies are growing up, evil is spreading: which is worse?! But actually this modern sonic touch is deceiving: Hooper works within an old-school format and mostly sticks to tried-and-true effects. His score is best when it goes for tension and unease, particularly in its use of low, rumbling tones: A choir starts by humming in a menacing manner in "Dementors in the Underpass"; the sound at the beginning of "The Death of Sirius" feels as if it's being belched out from some deep, dark, scary place, creating an effective atmosphere of dread. Elsewhere, the beginning of "Possession" feels as if it belongs in a J-horror movie, and then the track becomes deceptively calm before the storm hits again. Keen listeners will recognize Williams' "Hedwig's Theme" in "Another Story," but mostly Hooper is his own man. Just like the overall series, which gets darker and darker as it goes along, this CD makes for a rather brooding listening experience--the pizzicato violins on "Umbridge Spoils a Beautiful Morning" provide one of the few jaunty touches. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This CD is awesome!!! It is just like watching the movie except for no talking. Obviously. This is a great CD with great sound. Nicholas Hooper followed in John Williams footsteps by keeping the original theme song to Harry Potter.

A Breath Of Fresh Air.......2007-08-05

From the opening, I found this soundtrack surprising, unusual (for HP) and - ultimately - most refreshing. A new take on the Harry Potter movie universe that reflects the change in plot and character styles evident in Order Of The Phoenix.

I grew very fond of this work quite quickly. Knowing the story, I was initially taken aback by the sequence into which the pieces are organised (they do not follow the layout within the movie) but this does not justify any pertinent criticism.

The books have always conveyed a light-hearted impression of the world to which Harry is adjusting and this is reflected in the style of some of the pieces. As the books then inject a more cruel reality (in the guise of oppression, racism, selfishness, etc.) into this world, so too the music veers from light-hearted and humorous, sometimes through excitement (such as "Fireworks" - one of my favourites - and "Flight Of The Order Of The Phoenix"), into sympathy or intimidation.

With each new book, I have been impressed by the gradual maturation of the story and characters. Within this soundtrack, I was similarly impressed with the complex emotion conveyed through tracks such as "The Sacking Of Trelawney", "Possession"
and, most wonderfully, in "The Kiss" (another favourite). I think it lends maturity to a story that is 'coming of age'.

In one example, a light and pretty. theme is soon betrayed by its heavy and intimidating background. The character depicted by the piece is hidden and sugar coated - disguised with dainty frills, airy pinks - belying her fascist and sadistic tendencies. As is pointed out in the books, she is not necessarily evil; more extraordinarily authoritarian. I think this characterisation is reflected very nicely in "Professor Umbridge".

As a soundtrack should, this admirably fulfils the intention to support, enhance or even convey the personality of the image on screen. Earlier Potter themes are alluded to but the changes are a breath of fresh air. I am glad that we are no longer subject to the rehash of a six year old thematic concept.

Thematically awash in nothingness........2007-08-01

John Williams in the first three HP movies composed wonderful themes for each and every character/moment. After Star Wars, where he was forced to repeat and work with themes over and over, HP gave him a new lease on life. But here Mr. Hooper lets us down. First, he only uses "Hedwig's Theme". Aren't the others available or equally interesting?

His music is very atmospheric - that's good - but each track apparently goes no where. It all sounds like background music for a theme that's missing. "Delores Umbridge's Theme" is jaunty enough - anachronistic to her character, without a trace of evil - but we at least hear a theme. The "Fireworks" track - Fred and George leaving Hogwarts - was delightful. I actually like the folk element entering into the story a bit. But track after track sounds like accompaniment to a theme that no one played. Come on, Warner Bros., surely you can do better than this! (Don't get me started on the director either.) In my worst days as a composer I wrote as well as that.

THe other problem is the ordering of the tracks. Okay, JW did this on the early Star Wars movies, too, and we all hated it then. Some Broadway musicals had to re-order things, too, to accomodate the side breaks of LPs. They re-ordered stuff when CDs came out. So did the "Final" version of Star Wars 4,5 &6. There is no sense of pacing corresponding to the movie. It sounds great! But to quote a famous author, it is "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Excellent Mood Contrasts.......2007-08-01

I was highly impressed by the contrast between the light hearted and the dark in this soundtrack. That is part of the special magic of the Harry Potter books, of course, but I've never felt the movies, except for the first one, really captured it until now. The soundtrack for The Order of the Phoenix is relatively short, around 45 minutes in total. The tracks are arranged more by mood than by their placement within the movie, which can be a bit confusing at first, but I enjoyed the sprightly beginning of "Fireworks." I also found "Dumbledore's Army" and "The Room of Requirement" especially appealing. The tracks relating to Dolores Umbridge are interesting, too, in that they are able to convey her cloying surface charm and inner nastiness highly effectively. This is also true of "The Ministry of Magic".

The darker tracks, especially "The Death of Sirius" and "Possession," were well able to depict the tension and horror of those moments. I also enjoyed the forboding qualities of "Another Story" and "Journey to Hogwarts."

This CD well encapsulates the best qualities of the Harry Potter books and movies, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I thought it was fantastic. Hooper intigrated in music from the earlier movies, which were ignored by Doyle (not to say I disliked Doyle's). I felt the music really reflected the chaos and turmoil that surrounds Harry in this movie. The one thing I disliked was that the cd was not set up in a cohesive manner. However there is an easy fix to that, load it on an ipod.

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This soundtrack is excellent all the way through. With more variety than the first one...and I dont even want to mention the second one...it has graced my CD player more than any CD in the months since I bought it.

Hoist The Colours!!!.......2007-07-25

I have always been a fan of soundtracks. I really adore the works of Harry Gregson-Williams, Danny Elfman and, of course, John Williams. I now can say I have a new composer that I can add to my list; Hans Zimmer, the composer for Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and he also Overproduced the score for The Curse of the Black Pearl. Compared to past "attempts" I believe that Hans Zimmer has hit the jackpot.

The CD "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is unbelievably the best CD of the three. It contains 13 tracks including, one of my favorites, Hoist the Colours (the song the boy sings at the beginning of the movie, which becomes the back tone of the entire movie). It is a must buy for all soundtrack, movie, Disney and pirate lovers. I have never listened to a soundtrack this much since John Williams Star Wars Episode 1 Special Edition CD.

But there is a draw back for me. The CD is a Digipak. A Digipak is a CD that has cardboard-like outside rather than a plastic cover like most CD's. I don't `hate' them, I just don't like seeing things of mine getting ripped. So if you don't want your case/album art warped, get it on iTunes.

Overall it is a great CD and a must buy! " Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" soundtrack gets 5 stars out of 5.

This is the best soundtrack in the "Pirates" series. Hans Zimmer has melded the Eastern sounds with the West and composed an intricate melody which is hard to forget. My favorite soundtrack so far!

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

I had never heard of Josh Groban until one night I was looking at the
PBS series, "Distant Shores" with Peter Davison and this backgroun music came up. I had to search for the voice and the composer. It took me awhile to find Josh Groban. I am very old(veery!), studied music for years and he has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
From such a young man it seems unbelievable. He reminds me of beautiful voices of yesteryear- a pleasure to remember.

Loosely based on the popular Disney theme park audio-animatronic ride, one might expect a modicum of good-natured "Yo-ho-ho-ing"--or maybe a little rousing Korngold/Errol Flynn/Captain Blood orchestral romanticism--here. Instead composer Klaus Badelt initially entices us with some sparing Celtic folk charm, then unleashes a furious broadside of symphonic and choral thunder to rival his ominous score for K-19. The composer's fellow German mentor is an obvious influence throughout (the album is credited with a wink as "Score overproduced by Hans 'Long John' Zimmer") but Badelt brings his own muscular instincts to bear throughout. Perhaps shrewdly realizing that genre cliches are nothing if not for reinventing, Badelt delivers his rhythmically nervous Eurocentric sensibilities--sort of Holst duels Shostakovich on the Spanish Main--with the subtlety of a scorching cannonball. It's seasoned with a little romantic respite in the final act, if a bit gingerly, and could no doubt profit by some of Korngold's sparkling melodic verve. But it's a loud, unabashed Summer Blockbuster score at heart; alert the neighbors. --Jerry McCulley

I loved the movie, but I love the music even more. This is an excellent CD with only one problem - the last song (which is my favorite) is not long enough. It's easy to picture scenes from the movie while listening to each song. If you enjoy the symphony you will enjoy this CD. Happy listening!

I agree with the other reviewers about the music, which is fine, but also want to point out that this is a terrific work-out for sound systems with REAL sub woofers (not the scrawny boxes that say they are, but aren't). If you have a room shaker system, down to like 15 Hz, this is for you. The deepest and most sustained bass I have ever heard.

Secret - listen for hints of Gladiator and Mission Imossible. He helped with those films - maybe they are little inside jokes?

You needn't see the film of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to appreciate the wonder, magic, and fearful chills of J.K. Rowling's phenomenal bestseller in John Williams's outstanding score. Williams typically avoids the source material for the films he scores, but he reportedly derived great pleasure and inspiration from Rowling's first Harry Potter adventure, and created a perfect motif (fully expressed in "Hedwig's Theme") to dominate his score. It's first heard as a dreamy celesta waltz and embellished through myriad incarnations and moods, often with a sinister edge befitting the darker tones of Chris Columbus's direction. As befits an American movie set in France, this score starts off by quoting the French national anthem; fortunately, Michael Giacchino quickly turns off the cliché tap and gets the fun started. The composer, best known for his work on Alias and Lost, shows he can do light and nimble--and elegant, too: not many animated/kiddie movies have scores that evoke vintage Henry Mancini ("Losing Control"). "Wall Rat" is a good example of Giacchino's MO: It begins with a slightly melancholy melody played on the cello; that thread soon gives way to flutes and piccolo violins, which of course evoke the scampering of little feet--and that's when the bongos come in. Actually, those delicious bongos pop up regularly, flavoring the jazzy feel of "Cast of Cooks" or the tango-style "Special Order." Even when Giacchino uses that universal signifier of all things Gallic, the accordion, he does it sparingly ("A New Deal," "Ratatouille Main Theme") and with flair. And of course, Giacchino throws everything but the proverbial kitchen sink in the sprawling "End Creditouilles." Note that this instrumental CD starts off with the quirky pop song "Le Festin" (the feast) by the wonderful French vocalist Camille. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Since the company began producing features-length movies with "Toy Story" over a decade ago, Pixar's legacy as animation geniuses has flourished.

Growing right alongside that legacy is another: that of producing extremely memorable music for the movies.

If you want further proof, look no further than "Ratatouille," which is a great movie with a great score. Composer Michael Giacchino proves again that his style can melt seamlessly into just about any kind of film. This score could easily have gone way over the top in its "Frenchness," given the setting -- instead, Giacchino provides just enough Parisian styling to keep us grounded; otherwise, his music serves to put us in the mindset of Remy the rat, who just wants to be all that he can be. Thus, the music is a sort of psychological journey, and it's that aspect that makes the CD so successful. It aurally replicates the experience of the film's storyline, which, I think, is one of the best compliments a score CD can be paid.

Especial praise needs to be set aside for the gorgeous song "Le Festin," a Giacchinooriginal sung by Camille (whom I had never heard of, but would like to hear more of). As far as I'm concerned, this song immediately joins the ranks of timeless Disney classics, and if at least a nomination at next year's Ocars doesn't result, I will be calling foul.

This is an excellent score from Michael Giacchino. The first two tracks capture the romance of the setting of France perfectly. Camille has a sexy singing voice on the track "Le Festina". "Welcome To Gusteau's" is a warm and inviting track. I love the accordion playing here. I love the jazzy sound of the track "Cast Of Cooks" The sax playing is cool and slick. I love the frenetic pace of the tracks "100 Rat Race" and "The Paper Chase" "Remy Drives A Linguini" is a very fun track about the relationship between the two main characters. The music featured in the ending credits is sensual. It has a tango like sound. This score is so much fun to listen to.

Wonderful soundtrack to an equally stellar movie.......2007-07-11

While anticipating the movie, Ratatouille, I remembered what I thought of Cars -- a great movie, but one of Pixar's lesser works. Based on that, but also remembering how great a job Brad Bird did with The Incredibles, I put my expectation between Incredibles and Cars for Ratatouille. Once the reviews started flowing in, however, I started to have higher and higher hopes for the movie.

Come June 29th, I watched this sublime movie and decided that it was one of the best Pixar films to date, rivaling Toy Story 2 and The Incredibles for my personal favorites. One great thing about the movie was the music, however. The closing music in the final scenes of the movie was beautiful, forcing me to check out the soundtrack. I later found out that the music I heard was part of the opener to this CD, Le Festin.

Listening to the whole soundtrack, I would have to say that there is not one sagging part in all of its music. There are some definite highlights, of course, but as a whole, the music is cohesive to a tee. My personal favorites would have to be the beautiful Le Festin (the sound in the middle of the song where the singer goes, "Laisser moi vous émerveillez," is golden), and then two of the chase scenes -- the very upbeat 100 Rat Dash and The Paper Chase. For those who have seen the movie, you know that the choreography to these two chase scenes is awesome. However, the factor that seals the deal was the music that accompanied them.

I'm very happy to have purchased it and would urge the readers of these reviews to do the same. If you're still unsure if you wish to make the purchase, I suggest looking at the samples Amazon provides to hear for yourself.

It shouldn't be surprising that such a charming and clever movie is matched by a similarly attractive score.

Definitely worth a purchase, the disc features songs that are playful, reflective, jazzy... sometimes all at once. As another commenter rightly noted, one of the songs -- "Anyone Can Cook" -- is particularly notable for how it tugs at your heartstrings and evokes the more sensitive moments towards the end of the film.

In contrast, "Le Festin" (the opening track) is an delicious and quite hummable ditty of a theme that'll have you smiling every time.

Oh, and listen to that amazing trumpeter saucily shine through in the jazzy-and-multi-mood'd End Creditouille (the credits-music that kept nearly all theatregoers in the show I attended quietly in their seats 'til the very last moment)

So, given that I clearly love so many of the tracks on this CD, why only four stars? Alas, a number of the tracks just don't have that repeat-listenability thing going for them. It's not a CD I'll regularly listen to from start to finish.

But, oh, the rest of the tunes! Such a pleasure, bringing back great memories from the film. They'll be listened to again and again.

Perhaps anyone can cook. But not everyone can make such engaging compositions and arrangements, and for that, I salute Mr. Giacchino :)

The music is great all on its own. And there is a lot of it on this CD. It has the right amount of French ambiance without too much.

The year 2005 was big for Italian composer Dario Marianelli. His score for The Brothers Grimm received much applause (probably more than the film itself) and a few months later he came back with another batch of compositions for a period film. This time around, the plaudits are reversed: The film is better than the score. And that's not the only reversal: Since several of his compositions were to be performed by some of the characters on screen, Marianelli wrote parts of the music before the movie was shot, switching the order in which these things are usually done. The onscreen pieces are for solo piano, and Marianelli got a huge leg up by having them played by famed classical performer Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Marianelli was instructed by director Joe Wright to think along the lines of Beethoven (tall order!) but unlike The Brothers Grimm, which cleverly mixed and matched its classical influences, Pride & Prejudice fails to acquire a personality of its own. A few tracks, such as "Arrival at Netherfield," even border on George Winston territory. The intervention of the English Chamber Orchestra usually helps, but overall the score's palette sticks too much to a monochromatic beige. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Brilliant Score, Brilliantly Performed by Thibaudet!.......2007-07-13

I have always loved the Pride & Prejudice story, and both previous major versions of film adaptation. I fell in love with this particular version right from minute one, and was immediately captivated by the wondrous music, primarily centered on the piano. It is brilliantly performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

If more modern music was of this caliber, the world would be a more noble place. No film score collection is complete without this item.

I gotta tell you, the only thing better than Mr. Darcy confessing his love to Lizzy in the rain is listening to this score. I absolutely love it--I espeically love picturing the scenes, which one can see so vividly while listening to the music. It's beautiful. My favorite tracks are 9 and 11. Enjoy!

Piano Enthusiasts - rejoice!!!.......2007-06-01

I purchased this album some time ago, following having seen the dvd of the movie. What I had really wanted was the sheet music so I could play the beautiful piano pieces as heard in the film. It took a few months for the music to be published - Dario Marianelli is the composer - but until that time I listened to the c.d., which, I believe any lover of classical music will enjoy whether they play piano or not. Mr. Marianelli has crafted a hybrid blend between the best of classical form in musicianship with a more modern aesthetic. His music is cleaner, less fussy . . . and therein lies the beauty - you can hear the melodies singing out above all else, and they are rich, lovely melodies! Grab a cup of tea and the newspaper, or head out in the early morning dew to fuss with your garden . . . with P & P playing as your soundtrack. Hugely satisfying!!!

I can still remember the first time I heard this soundtrack. It was on my family's turntable. We happened to own the original vinyl addition. THE SOUND OF MUSIC (AKA THE SOUND OF MUSIC, in the words of Christopher Plummer who was Captain Von Trapp, in the film) is a classic musical that has really spanned the generations of young and old viewers, for (more than) four decades. For starters, the music is catchy ("The Sound of Music," "These Are A Few of My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss," as just a few examples). Secondly, this cast was just great! Though, I have a personal preference toward the original cast, with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. Nonetheless, Julie Andrews is great here. What a beautiful soprano voice.

This edition features bonus transfers of interviews with those involved in bringing THE SOUND OF MUSIC to the screen. What's more, this is the complete soundtrack (instrumental and music featuring vocals is included here). Definitely a "must buy" for true fans.

I loved the music when it came on the big screen. I loved it on LP and cassette. Now, I love it even more on CD. The joy I get from listening to it while driving is wonderful. It sends me back to fond family memories. This is a must have.

Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash.
