EXCELLENT POP BLUES.......2007-04-24
Kim shows his talents as a bluesy pop songwriter. The outstanding producing talents of Neil Norman are evident here. Simmond's guitar playing is outstanding. Norman maybe had a hand in this. I saw Savoy Brown on cable about the time this album was made. I made note of the excellent vocal talents of Dave Walker. He is put to good use on this pop material. I like almost every song. Most of them are ballards. ALL BURNED UP is a rocker. HEARTBREAKS MAKE YOU STRONG is almost heavy metal, but with an outstanding singer like Walker, it sounds better than those bands. A MAN ALONE and UNTIL THE SKY FADES AWAY are my favorites, but there are other standouts. I guess Crescendo Records wanted to turn Savoy Brown into a pop hit group. Sorry, but 1989 is too late for this kind of material. The bad part is the over use of reverb/echo. It makes everything sound like it's in the background--almost destroys the record. This is a strange offering, but I like it, and recommend it for blues rock fans who also like 60s pop. It's very progressive, if you want to relate it to the blues field.
The Kings of Boogie is Dave Walker at his finest! Deep and Soulful plus,.......2006-12-08
he's back! I have two copies of this very special (to me, anyway) CD. I originally became a fan back around A Step Further and earlier. Chris Youldon was perfect dynamite. But, things changed..(hey, gotta get used to it with SB!) and Dave puts in an incredible performance on this disk. You have to hear it and you will feel it. It does seem like a "theme" as grego said, along with the rest of his very astute comments and perceptions. Dave Walker surfaced after 13 years after, I'm not sure, survivalist/indian perhaps, we have to ask him. Hey, there's a thought, Kim, why don't you dial Dave up and see how he is. He looks and sounds great on the tribute CD to Sonny Boy Williamson, rated five stars full, you'll hear classic Dave throughout the CD, starting immediately on at least the first three songs and many more. I guess I have been 'looking back' lately finally finding that song I just couldn't remember "Waiting in the Bamboo Grove" on that truly excellent CD A Step Further. It's a horns/drums/screeching guitar instrumental (do more like this!). It also seems like I keep finding CD's I've never seen before (an early one done in Japan, plus a couple of others). Kings of Boogie is, indeed, a very special CD, by a very special band.
A concept album?.......2001-03-16
Well!... now here's a soulful CD. Call it a concept album if you like - a chronicle of the various stages in a love affair that apparently was not meant to be. Between the idealistic beginning of the relationship and the bitter end, the singer (the great Dave Walker) takes us through the various stages of heartbreak by sharing feelings such as regret, anger, loneliness, frustration, horniness, resignation, yearning and love. Who said men don't know how to share their feelings? This album is PERSONAL. Dave tells us exactly how he feels. The intimacy is both engaging and somewhat shocking. "Too hurt to cry, I'm holding back the tears. I want to run and hide, from all the wasted years. In this lonely room, I sit and stare... a man alone... a man alone." But before the relationship went sour, there was lots of excitement. "I got a brand new shirt, my pants are pressed just right. I turned the TV off... I've got a date tonight! I'm gonna meet Lucille, we're gonna go downtown. She's got her dancin' shoes, we're gonna shake it down. 'Cause we're the kings of boogie... we're really gonna shake it down!" And where is the great Kim Simmonds in all this emotional drama? WAILING on guitar of course, and letting us know how all these emotions really feel to Dave. Kim Simmonds plays great slide guitar on the title track, as well as on "All Burned Out," getting those fat, thick tones out of his old Gibson Les Paul. His playing on the other songs is always tasteful, emotional and to the point, a hybrid blend of blues and rock, never just one or the other.
One of the reasons why Dave's having a hard time getting over his failed relationship is because his sweetheart left without even telling him why. He's lost and confused and when you hear the pained quality in his voice, you know he's hurting. That's why the songs have titles like, "No Win Love," "Mean Business," "Bad State of Mind" and "All Burned Out." Nevertheless, as he sits alone in his room contemplating his "No Win Love," we find out the depth of the conflict he feels. On the one hand, he thinks, "I'm so glad you're gone... I'm better off without you." But on the other hand he sings, "I miss you all the time, I need you by my side. I know I'll always feel this way... until the sky fades away." The conflict between "Heartbreaks Make You Strong," and "heartbreaks can sometimes destroy even the strongest man," is what gives this CD its edgy tension. We're never sure from one song to the next whether he's going to succumb to his own suffering, or triumph over it. As to which way it goes, I'm not going to give it away. Buy this CD and find out for yourself.

Comfort food...............2004-04-09
This Cd gives us songs we have loved throughout our lives. Catchy tunes like "Mustang Sally" really set the mood for the fabulous instumentals and vocals. It is hard not to dance around your house while listening to these memorable songs. It's a happy "hip swinging","feet sliding" experience and the songs stick with you all day long.....I love this CD. It puts me in such a good mood so quickly !! Even my dog likes to dance around the house with me, he really digs it !! I suppose you could live without this CD, but why would you want to?

Blue -eyed soul starts here.......2000-07-14
This CD is a must have for fans of soul music. The Boogie Kings are legendary in Louisiana and parts south, and the rest of the world should check them out to see why. Gee Gee Shinn and Jerry ("Count Jackson") LaCroix are unforgettable vocalists, the horn section is rich and warm, and the rhythm section is solid. Listen to "Cryin' Man", the electrifying "Funny How Time Slips Away", and the tender ballad "Lonely Room" for a taste of what these fine musicians can do. If you can locate them, try to get their following records on the Montel label. "Blue Eyed Soul" is equally as good as this record, and "Live at the Bamboo Hut" is the best live record you will ever hear. This band continues to perform excellent music today, and their newer releases are available. But during the 1960s with the Montel sessions they were at their peak, and you shouldn't let another day go by without hearing why.

texace on the Boogie Kings - Nine Lives.......2002-11-04
This is the Boogie Kings after they got fat and Clint West dropped out and they went on tour all the way to Vegas. Used to rock and sweat to this group at the Bamboo Hut on Galveston Beach. Some of the best Blue-eyed soul from the late 50's and early 60's. Check out Clint West, the Swamp Legend for some great late 50's Southwest Louisiana gumbo and belly-rubbing music, the original Boogie Kings.

The Stone Alone didn't cut all ties with his famous friends when he took a hike from the Rolling Stones. Indeed, Anyway the Wind Blows's star-studded cast includes fellow Stones alumni Mick Taylor, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee, and Chris Rea. And those are just the guitarists! The big names are along to bring some flash to Wyman's apparently fluid regular crew, which includes Georgie Fame, Beverley Skeete, and Geoff Grange on vocals. The lot of 'em tackle a handful of Wyman originals and an informed collection of blues-based covers, including tunes from Willie Dixon, Nellie Lutchor, and J.J. Cale. The result is an expertly played collection with the feel of a jam session at an upscale pub. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
At last, a good Bill Wyman CD!.......2003-01-30
Leaning on his experience with Willie and the Poor Boys, Bill assembles the best musicians from his rolodex and covers R&B, jazz and pop standards going back to the 30s. Bill is a music FAN in the greatest sense and he knows no genre boundary. This music is well executed and Bill keeps his singing to cuts that his limited vocal range can handle, and his singing has improved from earlier solo efforts. You won't even notice. Highly recommended for anyone who loves music from a time when music was music.
highly entertaining.......2002-07-22
this cd has a sound and feel different than that presented in the mainstream music currently presented. i enjoy each song and how it differs from the the one before and after it, yet it flows together beautifully.i have recommend this cd to all who will listen to me.noone was disappointed.
Nothing memorable.......2000-04-15
Considering some of the talent here, this album is so laid-back it barely registers. It's slick, it's polished, but there's not a lot of soul here. Mick Taylor is barely audible, Clapton's been far bluesier elsewhere, and the vocals don't have a lot of passion. For a Wyman project that rocks, check out Willy and the Poorboys, with Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea, and a lot livelier supporting cast. This was a nice idea, but it's too much of a misfire to justify spending full price on.
A letter to man who has everything, especially feel........2000-04-09
Bill, When I say you have feel, I mean...w'll get'm. Bill, let's talk about your tone. (Sip of water)What you've created, is equal to what... Tony Pena did for baseball! If you didn't shackle through thousands of women in your touring career, then heaven help me (pause)something's wrong! You have got the ,... the sickest feel(swallow)in all my bass playing years- with a very popular 80's band by the way, I have ever heard.I did weddings too! And ladies, if you have never dropped to your knees at the first clink of this man's flatwounds...then baby you've never heard BILL WYMAN! Purchase this album.Period(let's just say Webster, when asked to define feel, looked at me with a shaggy wig and straight face and told me to shut my mouth and put on Anyway the Wind Blows. With that he walked away!)
peace...and I'm out,,,igaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I love this CD........2000-01-11
I first heard a couple of cuts from this CD while shopping in a (brick-and-mortar) bookstore, and it had me practically dancing in the aisles. I went home and sampled some more cuts online through Amazon and ordered it. Bill and his friends have produced an album that not only sounds like they're having a great time, but makes you feel like you're in on it too.

Kings of Country says it all........2000-08-20
This album may have some old artists on it and may not be up to the contemporary country artists that we hear today, but let me tell you that this is one you should not pass up. This is the album that got me hooked on country music and I still love it every day. These are the artists that laid the ground work for country music; they made what we hear today possible. In my opinion, this is the greatest album of all time!
