3 out of 5 stars It's worth it for "Give U My Heart".......2007-02-08

The first track seems to be hard to find anywhere else but here, and so for the wonderful songwriting talents of Babyface, the album was worth its secondhand purchase price.

The other songs are listenable, but not exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Boomerang is still #1.......2006-03-21

This is my message to everyone who does not own Boomerang the Soundtrack or the movie; PLEASE GO AND PURCHASE THEM. This movie is a classic and the CD. The funniest song is by Grace Jones, she makes me laugh like crazy, but her lyrics go along with the movie itself. Listen to "Reversal of a Dog", which talks about how Eddie Murphy was dogged out or what is called reversal of another dog whom is Robin Givens. The most romantic songs are by Johnny Gill called "There U Go" and by Keith Washington called "Tonight is Right". This is just some beautiful music! I had both the movie and the soundtrack on what we consider modern day recording VHS and cassette tape. I replaced them with DVD and CD. You know the strangest thing that I realized with the movie itself is the fact that the way they dressed back then or for that particular movie is kind of how some of us still dress for our corporate jobs or to go out on a date in 2006. Some folks are still rockin' Halle Berry's signature haircut, sporting the Robin Givens type hairstyle or hair weave, the tailored fitted business suits. Funny! Enjoy that movie and its CD, they are must haves for your your collection. Can you believe that Boomerang came out in 1992, wow that was about 14 years ago. Amazing!

3 out of 5 stars Grace Jones at her best, vocally. .......2006-03-09

This soundtrack is somewhat mediocre. Most of the songs are typical r'n'b cuts, but unfortunately, the album overall fails. Toni Braxton wasn't a star yet, Boys II Men hit it big time with "End of the Road" and Grace Jones' "7 Day Weekend" remains the highlight of the entire album. Most of the songs are boring, except Braxton's and Jones' tracks there really isn't much to shout hooray for. Mediocre at best.

5 out of 5 stars Sticking to the Script!!!.......2005-05-23

This was the era of conceptual soundtracks. Once you hear the selections you instantly remember the movie itself. The music and songwriting is so infectious, due to the combination of great artist such as Babyface, Toni, Keith Washington, BoyzIIMen, and sticking to the emotions of the script.

The cohesiveness of Face and Toni Braxton starts this disc off very strong with the feel good upbeat "Give U My Heart" (sexy & submissive).

"Tonight Is Right" had every guy working on getting their sound system real sweet at home and tweaking the lights perfectly to woo that lady just as vintage Eddie Murphy has done in the flick.

The airy "I'd Die Without You" is phenomenal while "End Of The Road" is probably the biggest slow jam of the early 90's. It was the classic end of the night song at the skating rink (couples only-backwards skating).

The sensual "Feels Like Heaven" is very hot, yet another classic slow jam tape essential. Newcomer Toni Braxton puts it down on "Love Shoulda Brought You Home", the performance was very seasoned. It portrayed so much conviction reminding us that the things that we have right at home . . . most often are the best things (especially if Halle lives there).

As a real boomerang's flight comes back full circle, I hope that our music someday return back to its moments of truth (Music with substance). Until then I feel good that I can always select the Boomerang soundtrack in itunes and reminisce on those days.

A must-have CD for music lovers of 90's R&B

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack. Great movie!.......2005-03-05

This is the only way to get PM Dawn's "I'd Die Without You" single. I'm glad Im not the only person that loved that track!!! Played very little in the movie, but I play it a lot at home!

5 out of 5 stars A "Heady Wine".......2007-04-07

The Creatures were born when Siouxsie and the Banshees members Siouxsie Sioux and Budgie recorded a sparse percussion and voice number called "But Not Them". The song soon appeared on the Creature's debut EP "Wild Things" and in 1983, they realeased their debut LP "Feast". "Feast" was a dreamy, impressionistic album inspired by the steamy jungles and spooky caves of Hawaii and 60's psychedelia. In 1989, in the wake of the Banshees's hugely succsessful album "Peepshow", the Creatures resurfaced with "Boomerang", their first bona fide masterpiece. The album didn't make a huge impact on the U.K. charts, which is where the Creatures saw their first big sucsess, but its two singles "Standing There" and "Fury Eyes" made a pretty big impact on the American modern rock charts. The album replaces the atmospheric, reverb-heavy production of "Feast" with a more laid-back feel. The mood on "Boomerang" is refreshingly light, given the Banshees's tendency to have more macabre themes in their music. And then there's the music; along with the expected tribal percussion and marimba, there's also a lot of brass on this album, like a Spanish trumpet on "Manchild" and numerous Blues/Jazz influences on songs like "Killing Time" and "Strolling Wolf". Sioux's vocals are in top form, with a sinister, almost witch-like sound that lends a perverse atmosphere to songs like "You!". Lots of unexpected instruments are used also, like drum loops and ambient effects on songs like "Pluto Drive", steel drums on "Pity" and "Venus Sands", and even an accordion on "Speeding". There are way too many great songs on here to name just one favorite, but it's probably a tie between the fun-filled "Untiedundone" and the moving "Manchild". The only song that comes close to being sub-par is "Venus Sands", which would have been better if it was shorter and less melodramatic. If you're into Siouxsie and the Banshees and want to experience more, buy "Boomerang" right away!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2006-03-11

This has to be my favorite album of all times. Even though there are a wide variety of sounds on this album, from soothing to energetic, I can't think of a bad track. I had to pay to download this since it seems you can't buy it new anymore. It's beyond me why they don't re-issue this. It's an album that's a must hear in my opinion. This was the best album The Creatures released, the other albums such as Anima Animus have great tracks too, but this is the most consistantly great album. If you can get hold of a copy, buy it you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars It keeps coming around to me........2006-02-06

Yet another time I blindly bought an album and was rewarded. All I knew was that it was a Siouxsie side-project, and while it's easy to tell that it's her, this is no Banshees record. This is more experimental and less catchy. Even though "Boomerang" was released around the time of "Peep Show", it's not as pop as that album was. The majority of this I like, but after many years of listening, it's the tracks "Standing There" and "Pity" that always repeat in my head. Overall a good play for big fans of Siouxsie, others might want to stick with "Kiss Them For Me".

5 out of 5 stars in my top 10 for over a decade.......2005-11-02

A desert island classic that sounds as if it was actually recorded on that desert island.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing from start to finish.......2004-08-19

It's been years since I bought this, and it remains one of my favorite recordings. The big hit, "Standing There," has a lazy bit of percussion that could be straight out of some late-night cocktail lounge, with Siouxsie sarcastically wailing, "Hey creepos, I'm talking to you." But then the song changes, becoming much faster with a whirling, infectious beat that positively throbs with energy. Other faves include "Speeding," with its zooming car effects, the languorous "Pluto Drive," and the mysterious "Simoom" that somehow sounds almost Moroccan to my ears. The world music influences on this recording only add to its infectious spirit.

This was one of Siouxsie's first forays into a style different from her work with the Banshees. As the Creatures, she and husband Budgie offer a more stripped-down style, heavy on the percussion. The assortment of instruments, electronics and other special effects used here is totally invigorating, with Siouxsie's inimitable voice sailing over it all. The sound, too, is excellent, with lots of glittering detail, and all the various layers coming through crystal-clear. I don't think it would be overstatement to call this one of the great rock recordings of the 1980's.

It's not as though wide-ranging avant-garde jazz clarinetist Don Byron hasn't pulled a rock tribute out of his trick bag before: His 1998 album, Nu Blaxploitation, resurrected songs by '70s funk-rock band Mandrill. Still, this tribute to Junior Walker, the Motown singer and saxist best known for his 1965 hit, "Shotgun," comes as a surprise--as does Byron's decision to play tenor saxophone on all but two tracks. A full-scale, supercharged, organ-wailing production featuring Chris Thomas King and Dean Bowman on lead vocals ("Shotgun" is sung by the latter), Do the Boomerang was built for pleasure. While it lacks the raw, earthy essence of vintage Junior--with his smaller tenor sound, Byron hangs back much of the time--the fullness, energy and tightness of the music make up for that. And while King's bow to James Brown on the hard funk tune, "There It Is," seems out out place, it's good hearing forgotten songs like the instrumental, "Mark Anthony Speaks," alongside familiar faves like "Pucker Up Buttercup." --Lloyd Sachs

1 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish.......2007-07-10

I am speechless!. The special sound of Autry DeWalt, better known as Jr. Walker is butchered by Don Byron...Stick to Avant Garde, my friend, and don't sully the memory of a soul giant

4 out of 5 stars Worthy Tribute.......2007-05-06

As something of a Junior Walker fan and connoisseur I was interested in how a a great Jazz man like Don Byron would interpret some of Junior's work. The Soul Session tracks and Cleo's Mood do lend themselves to a Jazz interpretation and he does make the most of it, particularly Cleo's Mood, Mark Anthony Speaks and Satan's Blues. Warm renditions and funky improvisations by all of the band.
Perhaps what is lacking though is the raw, spiky even crude production values of the originals that made them stand out against the 'usual' gloss of most of Motown's output of the time. The non Junior track 'There it is' (James Brown) also stands out and it's probably the nearest the band gets to a raw funky sound.
Nevertheless, it is enjoyable, and as a fan I am just pleased that some overdue recognition is made to a much underrated musician who's influence is always readily acknowledged by many sax players and few else.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted to hear but a good recording for what it is.......2007-04-10

I love Don Byron's creativity and love his fearlessness when choosing music and bands but this album just won't get played by me. The reason why I don't like it is that it it so unlike Don Byron that it bores me lol. I want creative interpretations and to be wowed by some twist here or there when I listed to Don Byron and I don't get that *at all* on this album.

This album is "in the pocket" and it seems to be recorded from the perspective of, "Let's see how close we can sound to a band in the 1970's who is recording an album of covers of a soul band in the 50's." Forget that - I'm not interested in that lol. If you want to cover these great songs, I want to hear it but I *don't* want to hear the exact same arrangements that I can hear in any R&B bar on a Tuesday night jam session :(

Overall, this album is predictable and, if you like soul/blues, you are better off buying an album by someone who does that stuff for a living. Don does a good job playing it but why listen to him when you could just go straight to the source? What's the one thing I don't want from a Don Byron album? Rote sticking to the form and predictability. What do you get on this album? Predictability and rote stick-to-the-1-IV-V.

2 out of 5 stars ...I made it through the whole album!!!.......2007-03-06

He's certainly assembled a very fine band. That's for sure.
Another thing that's obvious is that this album is much of a stylistic departure from the usual...interesting sophisticated thaught provoking albums, this listener has come to "expect" from don byron. I think HE could have done something more interesting with the material. This however is not my main thing about this CD...
His clarinet playing is great .His Tenor sax playing is..."OK". Maybe it is the music that doesn't quite live up my street,...but then again,David Gilmore's guitar is "Just Right" and does that what I miss in byrons sax playing Gilmore sounds a lot more authoritative on his instrument than byron does on his -to my ears anyways- (the same goes for george colligan on organ-check out the recordings he did with gary thomas, brad jones on bass and rodney holes on drums).
On the whole a good album though it is just Don Byron whom I had hoped a little more of.
I am hoping to hear more Saxophone playing from him (the little bits from Bug Music and Ivey Divey is the only other Sax playing I have heard from him and Ivey Divey has left a similar impression on me in terms of saxophone playing as the Boomerang has...so far) to gain a more informed oppinion than that displayed in this review.

4 out of 5 stars he's a soul man.......2007-02-03

this recording is just what it is: the music of junior walker. by don byron on tenor sax on all tracks except when he plays clarinet and bass clarinet on two other tracks. lots of organ and guitar and heavy bass and drums summon from the past funky rhythm and blues, not quite as drenched in funk as the old school originals, but not bad for a visitor. yes, you can dance to these tunes, and there are vocals.

as for jazz? i was thinking of ornette coleman and his origins of funky soul music before he went jazz and jazz classical.

Boomerang is one of my favorite songs off this album and I really love this movie as well. I rate DVD and album 5 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-08-13

This soundtrack has always been very special to me. It was given to me as a gift years ago when the movie was released. Whenever, I need to escape the world and find a special place, I play this music. So smooth and gentle, it feels as if you are actually floating on the sound.

5 out of 5 stars The music of pure rapture.......2000-04-26

One of the most stirring soundtracks of any film I can recall, much of this music can take the listener to a place so calm and thoughtful it seems as if time has ceased to exist. There's little conventional "melody", but instead sweeping washes of sound and chords which convey ambiguous, tender and searching emotional states. Sometimes pensive, sometimes mystical, sometimes passionate, it is truthful, complex music, whether intimate or grand. I like to play it while driving in the mountains. It has become indispensible to me!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Stirring and a Wonderful Infant Relaxer.......1999-07-16

When I heard this soundtrack during the movie, I was swept away with it's beauty, expansiveness and, oddly, its intimacy. It soothed me like no other instrumental body of work I had heard at the time--or since. When we had our first son in 1990, I would bathe him at night, bring him into the living room, put this on and put him on my chest. Within 5 minutes, he'd be asleep. It worked equally well for our second son. Beyond infancy, it was a calming resource on more than our fair share of family car trips. You and your family can't miss with this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Drama Score.......1999-01-09

Michael Convertino definitely nailed it on the head with the score for the 1986 film adaptation of CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD. The score is gentle and uplifting, yet examines the underpinnings of humanity. "Rain Pool" and "Underwater Love" are cues that truly stand out in an album that conspires to bring the listener to the brink of tears. A good listen, if you're in the right frame of mind, and a worthy addition to any score collection.

Joyous rhythms, hopeful lyrics and sterling instrumentation give life and soul to Boomerang, the third disc from Cuban collective Habana Abierta. The eight members reside in Madrid, but the group's collective heart remains in its native Cuba. They address issues of identity, political unrest and isolation, but the music remains spirited throughout the set. Boomerang is an effortless, elegant and often electric ode to not only native sounds, but music in general. Songs flow naturally into each other, incorporating elements of rap and rock alongside bolero, jazz and flamenco. Each member takes his turn behing the mic, but it never feels disjointed or haphazard. The complexities--and ultimate beauty--of life is what ties all of Boomerang's stellar tracks together. Standouts are impossible to pick, ranging from the aching beauty of "La Novia de Superman" and "Corazon Boomerang" to the prickly tropical flair of "Bailala Bien." An easy pick for one of 2006's best releases--and a likely award contender in the coming months. --Joey Guerra

"Been born in Africa, growing up in America, rap has just gone around to come back," proclaim Senegalese rappers Daara J on the title track to their appealing new Boomerang. It would be a perfect summation of the group's sound, except that Boomerang resembles nothing so much as recent albums by Cuban hip-hoppers Orisha--with hard-hitting hip-hop grooves and lush vocal choruses embellished by tasty snippets of acoustic guitars, flute, accordion and percussion. While there are some West African touches here and there--a gorgeous guest vocal from Rokia Traore on "Le Cycle," some afropop-ish acoustic guitar on "Le Precipice"--the group mostly belongs to an emerging wave of global hip-hop that also includes Boomerang producer Sergent Garcia and Daara J's Senegalese/French compatriot MC Solaar. The group's lyrics, mostly in French and their native Senegalese Wolof, eschew the braggadocio of much American hip-hop for some Afro-centric social commentary that harks back to old-schoolers like KRS-One and Public Enemy--although non French or Wolof-speakers may be disappointed that full translations aren't available in the CD booklet. --Ezra Gale

The first song I heard off this CD was Exodus, and I bought the CD the next day. Every time I've played it at a party someone asks me about it. It's really fantastic -- a mixture of rap, hip-hop, and Senegalese music. Despite my high-school (and, sadly, college) French, I still don't understand most of their lyrics, but the music is so great it doesn't matter (and I'm a big lyrics person, so that says a lot).

Best picks: Exodus, Esperanza, Number One, Babylone, Le Cycle. All great and groovy in their own way.

Highly highly recommend. I could listen to this every day. And sometimes I do.

    5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change!.......2005-06-25

As a few others, I heard Daara J's "Boomerang" in the interview on NPR a few weeks back. I was so taken by the interview and the music, I went on-line right away and ordered the CD. With my "limited" knowledge of French and Spanish, I was able to understand some of the words which are very powerful and moving, their native Senegalese Wolof is just as beautiful. What else can I say, but I love it and will keep my eyes and ears open for more to come from these very talented young men.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2005-02-06

This is a great disc! Equally great to listen to in the car and to dance to at a party. Exodus, Paris Dakar, and Esperanza are my personal faves of the moment. I also recommend buying Global Hip Hop -- a collection that includes Esperanza... The perfect record for hip hop fans who are a little tired of cheesy samplings and expletives every other word.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing blend of styles, genres, languages........2005-01-17

This is an extremely high-quality album. The blending of hip-hop, with reggae, Senegalese music, and even Cuban music (in Esperanza) is masterfully done. While I've seen some reviewers bemoan the "is it reggae or rap?" quality of some international hip-hop artists, I think that Daara J's ability to appropriate these different styles (and discourses they represent) and make them work together seamlessly is brilliant. You don't have to understand the lyrics to recognize the skillz present, and -- of particular importance in hip-hop -- the production is excellent.

In contrast to a prior review, I would suggest that this is not a dance album. There are certainly a few catchy & danceable songs, but on the whole this is probably not going to drive people en masse to the dance floor. But it certainly will have everyone listening & making mental notes to purchase the album ASAP.

    5 out of 5 stars A change can be a good thing.......2005-03-31

Although different from her first three cd's, I think that this cd is nice. However, this has more of a folk feel than of a techno beat. If you are are a huge Stacey Q fan, than this is a CD for you. However, if you are just beginning to Listen to Stacey Q, I suggest listening to some of her earlier records to get in touch with Stacey Swain the "singer". Some of these CD's include: Better than Heaven, Hard Machine, and Nights like This. You can also check out the Return of the Living Dead movie soundtrack, she performs the last two tracks. Stacey is also rumored to release a new CD titled Stardust. I hope all of this was helpful to someone.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-12-10

Her cd's of the 80's are great: Playback, Better Than Heaven, Hard Machine, Nights Like This, and a few others. NIghts Like This is in my top 20 favorite CD's of all time as far as synth pop goes. Boomerang is nice but by no means is it her greatest work. It has a folksy feel with some catchy tunes but for someone whos been in the musiz biz for so long I would have thought her writing skills would be stronger by now but instead the cd is a collection of personal musings with a very mellow touch. Where's the old energetic Stacey from the past? Is she getting old now?? :) Well, this cd is one for die hard fans I think, if you really want to hear classic Q, get her Greatest Hits CD from Thump. It's great. At any rate she's still the synth pop Diva of all time so I hope she keeps making cd's, but next time in a dance style. Shes' the original Kylie.

    5 out of 5 stars Dreamy.......2004-05-15

I am most pleased by this CD. It has been heard by few and needs a spotlight quick! This really showcases Stacy Swain the artist. I list this in the "3 cd's taken to a desert island"(Boy George-You can never be too straight and Sparks-Little Beetoven being the other 2). The obscure and alternative upstart as a techno pop performance artist are remembered here. But this time she brought along some sentiment and atmosphere. Beautiful and avant garde and still just pop music. I lurve this record made almost 10 years ago. This forgotten cd is worth remembering.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest thing ever.......2003-12-21

Stacey Q has done it again! After her masterworks, Better Than Heaven and Nights Like These, she has finally reached what most would agree to be her peak. I personally think that she tops George Harrison ten-fold with her stunning rendition of the (now-timeless) classic "My Sweet Lord". This stands up there with Blonde on Blonde as one of the definitive American musical statements. Go buy 50 copies you brainwashed bastards.

    3 out of 5 stars Worth Buying.......2002-01-30

I admit that I feel Boomerang is not as good as Swain's first, Better than Heaven, but I have no regrets about the purchase. The first two tracks--including the title track--make her voice sound reedy and weak instead of using its beautiful clarity, but the remainder of the CD is at least competent and often very good. "Tara" in particular has a calm, dreamy quality reminiscent of Donna Summer's song "Lucky." Many of the songs have a definite retro sound and the overall effect is odd but pleasantly interesting. This is very much a departure from previous Stacey Q efforts, and I must applaud Swain for stepping forward instead of trying to record a clone with a new name.
