5 out of 5 stars Cured my insomnia.......2007-07-14

I used to rely on drugs on a regular basis to go to sleep and stay asleep. After using this CD for a month I no longer struggle with going to sleep and I can put myself back to sleep if I wake up early, or I just want to relax and sleep in. Now, I usually fall asleep in the first five minutes. Even when I use different CDs, I still use some of the skills taught in this CD, signal breath and clearing my mind. I highly recommend this CD if you have trouble falling or staying asleep.

Other titles I recommend are Listen to the Whisper in your Sleep Guided Meditation and Body Scan: Managing Pain, Illness, & Stress with Guided Mindfulness Meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended Highly.......2007-07-06

I recommend this CD for Everyone-people trying to sleep, or just relax, adults, children, fearful people with anxiety and fearful fliers. It is the best CD of it's kind I have ever listened to. The narrators voice is superb and it really does the job. A resounding five stars! Kelly Austin Atlanta, Georgia

5 out of 5 stars JUST AMAZING.......2007-06-20

What an amazing CD. I use it for sleep, when I travel, and just for general relaxation. It is very special, soothing and peaceful, wonderful for adults and children. I recommend it very highly."

5 out of 5 stars Really Calming and helpfull.......2007-06-19

This CD helped me getting better, and calmer sleep. I think Ms. Shapiro deeply understands the human mind and therefore, was capable of putting together this amazing CD.

5 out of 5 stars Soundly Sleeping in Dallas, Tx.......2007-05-13

This is unlike any cd that I have ever listened to. Ms. Shapiro's soothing voice seems to cut through all my anxiety and relax me in a magical way. Ms. Shapiro speaks over a delightful selection of music which collaborates to intensify the hypnotic effect. I would recommend this CD to anyone I know.

There's only one word that comes immediately to mind when describing Anberlin's Never Take Friendship Personal release. The word? Amazing. This is one of those truly remarkable releases that is so refreshing, so defining, and so well done, you will feel a need to let every know about it. Much like Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown and D.C. Talk's Jesus Freak, Anberlin's second release captures the musical styles of the day but recasts them in a unique and exciting way. Much credit up front should go to producer Aaron Sprinkle, who never lets the music overshadow Steven Christian's emotive alto vocals. Joseph Milligan's guitar work is nothing short of phenomenal and propels such blistering tracks like "Paperthin Hymn," "Runaways," and "Feel Good Drag." Let's not forget the rock-steady rhythm from drummer Nathan Young and bassist Deon Rexroat that continually lays down a concrete foundation. Also worthy of note is the intelligent songwriting that prevails throughout the release, showing that Christian-based bands don't always check their brains at the studio door. Moody at times, exhilarating at others, this is a giant leap forward for a relative newcomer in Christian music. It's also a release worthy of widespread acclaim and a breath of fresh air in a genre that is sadly growing all too predictable. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars No sophomore letdown at all.......2007-08-05

If anyone thought that Anberlin wouldn't be able to follow up with a smash from their debut Blueprints for the Black Market. They would be oh so wrong.

They start with the title track Never Take Friendship Personal, with a nice rocking beat that your sure not to forget along with some solid playing. Followed up nicely by Paper Thing Hymn pretty good on the 2nd track as well. After that comes Stationary, its interesting how they come up with the song titles for each of their albums. One of the ones i like most on the cd Symphony of Blase, love the title, the song and all else about this track.

Day Late Friend about a friend who hasnt kept in touch with you like they promised. i like the line "is there no pen and paper where you are". Its actually pretty good with people that have for some reason or another not kept contact like they said. Runaways, Time and Confusion, The Feel Good Drag, Audrey, Start the Revolution all play equally well in order on the cd. A mid tempo song or two helps keep NFTP rolling along at a steady clip.

The last and best song on the CD (the others rock as well) just this is the song that i can play over and over again. Along with Symphony of Blase and Dance Dance Christa Paffgen. Its hard to put into words how much this song just flows from beginning to end. I find myself just getting lost all it has to offer. Great lead vocals, guitar, drums and background really help this song.

Overall i give "Never Take Friendship Personal" a 4.75 out of 5. More than close enough to give an even 5 score. Don't miss this cd it is more than a worthwhile collection to Anberlin cds and cd collection overall.

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars This album is just amazing.........2007-06-12

I just got this album a few days ago, so i have yet to determine my favorite songs or even the names of songs. This cd has yet to leave my ears. When I'm driving..Never Take friendship personal..on the computer..NTFP..even at work..NTFP. I bought Cities before i bought this cd and this cd is even better than Cities..some how. This cd is incredible it mixes every single great part of rock into this cd. Extremely catchy breakdown, powerful, emotional vocals, great lyrics, and choruses and verses that are almost too addictive. There is honestly nothing to hate on this album if you like any genre of rock. There's an amazing slow rock ballad, fast-paced songs with some guitar solos..and that's just the beginning. Some songs that i remember singing in my head constantly are Paperthin Hymn, the feel good drag, a day late, and dance with... I also love the song start the revolution (i think thats what its called) Buying this cd will be the best decision you will ever make and it is worth every penny...oh yeah and see them live if your the slighest fan of anberlin..which i know you are

4 out of 5 stars Solid album, one of my favorites!.......2007-03-08

I had not heard of Snow Patrol until I heard "Chasing Cars" on the radio, and I bought their cd on a whim. I must say I was not dissapointed. The only reason for 4/5 stars is that a couple of the songs seemed a little off to me. But that is only a couple of songs. You will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning!.......2007-03-06

This is IMO, Anberlin's strongest album. The only average song on this album, ironically, is the title track. Every other song is stunning and single worthy.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've ever heard..........2007-02-19

To start with, my music tastes are quite different from a ton of people out there. Most trendy music these days I find to be absolutely horrible - i.e., pop, rock, and rap. My favorite music genres are videogame soundtracks and techno/electronica, probably because they are generally free of lyrics. I also tend to like anything instrumental due to the same thing. This said, I also am a fairly large fan of classic rock, Pink Floyd, Foreigner, Journey, The Police, etc.

Now that I've conveyed my general musical interests, you have an idea of where the review is coming from. My friend made me listen to yet another band in his car one day and I sighed and said "whatever". About 20 minutes later, I wanted to know the name of the band that played "that song", which happened to be "We Dreamt in Heist" from Anberlin's first CD (Blueprints for the Black Market). I proceeded to check out the entirety of Blueprints that evening and shockingly discovered that a mainstream rock band had taken my musical tastes by storm! Anberlin's sound is so amazing, and for some reason so unique from other rock artists out there these days, and it really hit the spot.

A few weeks later, I got my hand on this CD, Never Take Friendship Personal, and at first I found myself going back to Blueprints for the Black Market. However, a few months later here I am, and I have decided this disc is my favorite not only of Anberlin's, but of any collection of music I have ever heard.

I highly recommend this CD, and in particular Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen. If at first you don't love these songs, listen a couple more times and I guarantee you'll be singing them in the shower. ;)

The recordings Johnny Cash started making for Rick Rubin's American label in 1993 launched a journey through the Great American Songbook--from traditional tunes to alt-rock--that continued until, literally, the end of his life. What wasn't known at the time was that Cash had anticipated the American Recordings concept 20 years earlier. A series of informal private sessions he recorded in 1973 featuring just voice and guitar--with a few numbers added between then and 1982--were left untouched at his House of Cash studio, unearthed only after his death in 2003. These 49 songs, labeled "Personal File," show him exploring 19th-century parlor tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, gospel, little-known Cash originals, classic and contemporary country, and even a recitation of Robert Service's poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee." On many, his spoken introductions reveal personal ties to a given number. Cash reprises early country fare like Jimmie Rodgers's "My Mother Was a Lady" and "The Letter Edged in Black." He also revisits later country classics like the Louvin Brothers' "When I Stop Dreaming," close friend Johnny Horton's hit "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)," John Prine's "Paradise," and stepdaughter Carlene Carter's "It Takes One to Know Me." The second disc is a virtual hymnbook, blending traditional gospel and A.P. Carter tunes with a sacred composition by Rodney Crowell and Cash gospel originals. For those enchanted by the illness-ravaged soulfulness of Cash's later American recordings, hearing him in his prime is not only breathtaking--it underscores the depth of his still-remarkable musical vision. --Rich Kienzle

Album Description

Deep within the House of Cash, Johnny Cash's recording studio, office suite, and museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, behind the studio's control room, was a small vault-like space in which many of his most prized possessions were stored. A collection of rare firearms dating back to the 18th Century, some personal effects of Jimmie Rodgers, artwork and letters from fans all over the world and much more was carefully arranged and locked away for safekeeping. Then there were the tapes. Hundreds of them. Demos from songwriters, album masters, multi-tracks of the ABC television series, and some boxes marked simply "Personal File." These are Johnny's most intimate sessions, recorded mostly in 1973 and then subsequently at his leisure. Just a lone voice and an acoustic guitar, singing songs and telling stories about them. A concept that has since come to be thought of as revelatory but, as is evident in this stunning new set, is something Johnny Cash had been doing all along—if only for his personal file. This 2-CD collection features 49 previously unreleased recordings.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I'm comin' Lord for my heavenly reward........2007-06-14

This 2 CD set features songs Johnny Cash recorded at his home recording studio. They are from tapes marked "personal file". The tapes feature Johnny Cash alone with his guitar and were recorded for Cash's personal use and were never intended to be released. About half the songs were recorded in July of 1973. The rest of the songs were recorded between October, 1973 and December, 1982. The first disc features secular material and the second disc features religious songs. There are a lot of good songs here, but the similarity in the arrangements gets a bit repetive after a while. This is a real treasure trove for serious Johnny Cash fans, but I suspect that casual fans may not enjoy it as much.

3 out of 5 stars Personal File Review.......2007-04-02

This 2CD set is for hard core Johnny Cash fans. The quality of the mixing is marginal with the guitar often being less audible than I would optimally prefer. On the first CD JC sings some great old folk tunes. The 2nd CD consists entirely of renditions of spiritual tunes and reflects a much more personal side of JC. This CD set requires having a taste for Johnny Cash without any of the fancy trimmings. But in the right mood this can also provide an incredible listening experience.

1 out of 5 stars Sometimes there's a reason some things are "unreleased.".......2007-03-16

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan (love his old stuff AND new), but I really can't take this album. Some songs are preceded by entertaining anecdotes, but that's about the only highlight I can find. I really don't plan on listening to this ever again. Disc 1 is all "family-man" songs, disc 2 is all gospel.

I think the only people who will be able to appreciate this are guys who are married with children, really, really, REALLY die-hard fans, or both. I'm sad to say I can't recommend this to anyone else. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars it would really be best for you to get this........2007-01-16

a must for all johnny cash fans. a must for all fans of americana music. beautifully subtle recordings that capture johnny cash alone with an acoustic guitar, singing with heartfelt warmth and spirit. this is my favorite reissue of any type of music from 2006. it would really be best for you to get this. honest, it really would.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2007-01-11

Three stars is in no way a knock on this CD. I'm a big Cash fan and enjoy this CD but at times it can be a bit slow. It's just Johnny and a guitar. I think Personal File is more a fit for serious Johnny Cash fans.

On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also written for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up? Maybe not entirely yet, but Lohan is showing the promise of an honorable mainstream career. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars as much as i'd hate to admit it..........2007-07-20

i loved every song on this album.i don't care for lindsay in the least but i did love this album.i listened to her first c.d and this is one is way better.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing respectability.......2007-07-11

This sophmore album from Lindsay does grow on the listener, I must admit it. It's nothing spectacular, but it's very listenable and quite enjoyable. Ignore Lindsay's personal life and, to be honest, the things she tries to say about it on this album. They're not particularly credible or interestig. Focus on the music. It's a bit more of a rocky and edgy sound than the debut "Speak." Lindsay's husky voice has its own unique quality to it, can't be said that she sounds just like just a carbon copy of a whole gaggle of other young singers. The songs A Little More Personal and Who Loves You are very good, I hit the repeat button. In summary, quite respectable female pop/rock.

1 out of 5 stars Lindsay Lohan Needs To Find Another Way To Make Money..........2007-06-04

**I want to give this work of the ludicrous Lindsay Lohan a (-)100 stars, but the review format only lets me go down to 1 star...

Poor Lindsay Lohan...

She's been enabled practically all her life to produce terrible movies, music, posters, and personal actions. Unless you, the consumer, enjoy having a reverse peristaltic reaction to this horrible album, then by all means waste your money and buy it. Emergency Rooms should stock this album for use when a patient must evacuate their bowels do to poisoning.

I suggest that if you need to listen to the pathetic groans and moans of an adolescent alcoholic and drug addict, buy stuff from the Olsen Twins; that way you'll get a two-for-one deal...

Good Luck...!

3 out of 5 stars Defending Lohan and It's Okay.....I Guess.......2007-02-04

I would never review music, but I felt bad at all the people knocking her. I don't think this is a terrible CD. I do think that this may very well be Lohan singing. Her voice is decent but just flawed enough that I think it is genuinely hers. The songs aren't terrible, they are actually listenable. Her cover of the Stevie Nicks song was actually sort of good. I guess her biggest problem is that they are very forgettable. I would never buy it, but if it was given to me for free I would keep it. This is probably best for mom's that are looking for something to buy their tween's that isn't completely and uberly sexed up.

5 out of 5 stars Love this girl!.......2007-01-01

Lindsay Lohan's "A Little More Personal (RAW)" is amazing. I love the kind of 80's feel to it. Its definetly moody, and she gives her soul and heart into this album. I love to listen to this CD...it's timeless....

Mathis was among the singers who, in the '60s and '70s, churned out an album every few months--often made up largely of the same recent chart hits his peers (Andy Williams, Jerry Vale) were covering. Despite the presence of "Feelings," however, this four-CD box is low on chaff and high on the wispy romanticism of hits such as "Chances Are," "Misty," and "It's Not for Me to Say." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The music of Johnny Mathis.......2007-05-24

Excellent! A LOT of good tracks. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Collection.......2007-02-07

I had forgotten how great Johnny Mathis is until I recently watched his "50 Year concert celebration on PBS. I enjoyed it so much, especially one song, "99 Miles from LA" that I went on Amazon to find one of his cd's that had this song in it. Fortunately for me, I decided on this personal collection. It is hard to believe that I have four cd's in this collection that contain so many wonderful favorites of his that are absolutely fabulous and for such a small $ amount. Anybody that wants to revisit Johnny Mathis cannot go wrong with this collection. Bravo, Johnny.

1 out of 5 stars not received.......2007-01-16

I haven`t received the CD's. I would like to know what happened since I made the order one month ago. thanks

5 out of 5 stars Mathis at his best.......2007-01-10

This collection contains 4 CDs of Johnny Mathis singing the songs that made him an "American Singing Icon". The selections have been beautifully re-master and showcase Mathis's pure singing style and talent. The collection includes all of the big hits; Chances Are, Misty, It's Not For Me to Say. However; included are a number of truly wonderful Mathis songs like "Yellow Roses On Her Gown".

This Mathis collection will take you back to a time when couples held hands, and a "Kiss" was a "Kiss". Hearing Mathis sing these songs will make you remember the best days of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Mathis, the male singer of all times for standards and classics.......2006-07-29

When Streisand was growing up, she was imitating the pure vocal sound of the one and only Johnny Mathis! Was I surprised? Not at all! They reflect each other's style, repertoire and classiness in live performance. I have always been a Mathis fan forever and ever. And to have this precious boxset and play it in my laptop or CD player is priceless. Mathis has always been the benchmark for standard male singers. Even the new guy who has been making waves for singing standards like Michael Buble will not be at par with Mathis... at least not at this time! This is the best boxset of Mathis, in my opinion. One of the few CD collections I am keeping after de-cluttering my apartment... I cannot find it in my heart to let go of these great collections of music by the finest male voice of all time!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still in Love with Nancy!.......2005-12-11

I'll keep my review brief and simple. I've been a fan of Nancy Wilson since the Fall of 1963. It's as if every song she's ever recorded, every live performance she's ever given and every one of her practice sessions for the past forty plus years have been just warm ups to R.S.V.P. Some reviewers are commenting on technicalities of midrange vibratos, etc. That's not the point of listening to a CD (unless you're a professional reviewer which none of us here should be). Every song on this CD is perfection. Her accompanists (both vocal and especially instrumental) are also incredible. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to it (often with headphones to pick up every nuance of her voice). Buy it. Share it. Love it.

4 out of 5 stars Always a class Act!.......2005-10-05

Nancy Wilson has always delivered a consistant and dependable great performance. I love the material chosen for this collection as well as most of the collaberations. Bravo to Ms. Wilson again!

5 out of 5 stars Finally- back to what she sings best .......2005-06-29

This is a great jazz album. The selections, arrangements and vocals are all top notch. I am glad she has gotten back to what she does best instead of all of those "contemporary" albums with mediocre material she seemed to be doing for a while.

5 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Effort.......2005-01-28

The New Yorker lists this as one of the ten best albums of the year. I respect their opinion, though I don't agree with it. But it is a 5-star album, and one worth owning.

This album is gorgeous. It consists of Nancy Wilson, now a senior citizen, dueting with numerous musicians, principally jazz musicians. But the concept of the album is quite different than Sinatra's, Bennett's, or Brother Ray's career-end albums of duets with various singers. Here, except for two singers (Kenny Lattimore and Ivan Lins) the musicians are instrumentalists; and the guest artists really are accompanying Ms. Wilson. The whole album has the feel of a glass of dubonnet by candlelight, at the end of a very good day. In particular, "Minds of their Own", "Little Green Apples", "Why Did I Choose You", and "You'll See" are just drop-dead gorgeous.

So, why do I not quite agree with The New Yorker? Sadly, as in the case of Tony Bennett and Jimmy Scott, Ms. Wilson in her golden years has lost the tightness in her voice which governs vibrato. She still has fabulous breath control, and can power a loud note; but when she's singing at midrange in a mezzo voice, her vibrato goes wide all over the place and misses the center of the note. It's noticeable throughout.

So when I say that this is a Gorgeous Effort, I mean that literally: this album is gorgeous; and it--unlike her seminal albums from 40 years ago with Cannonball Adderly and George Shearing--is an effort.

5 stars nevertheless. RC

5 out of 5 stars Boss Lady.......2005-01-04

After listening to this latest Nancy Wilson offering a few more times, I'm revising my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Initially I was probably disappointed that on none of the tunes does she body slam me to the floor (I'm still shaking from her incredible performance of "Hello, Like Before" from the late 90s). But with the exceptions of the two vocals she shares with Kenny Lattimore (an androgynous duet that goes nowhere) and Ivan Lins (who sounds like a rank amateur compared to Ms. Wilson), this is no less than a perfect collection by inarguably the world's greatest living jazz singer.

"Day In, Day Out" is the only up-tempo tune on the album and Nancy naturally kicks butt on it. But the control she exhibits on the ballads is no less impressive. No one but she could do justice these days to Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye." With that uncanny sense of pitch that is hers alone (she must think exclusively in terms of micro-tonality), she requires no more than a phrase to take us from a plaintive lament to a sense of comforting reassurance.

As for "Blame It On My Youth," she's probably the first singer since Sinatra to get the song's tempo (it's usually taken way too slow) along with its sense of self-mocking irony right. And she risks the high note at the end, hanging on despite a trace of waver that would not have been there 5-10 years ago.

While the guests include a number of venerable all-stars--ranging from the comparatively "youthful" Gary Burton to those ageless wonders, George Shearing and Toots Thielemans, Nancy doesn't give them an inch. This is her session, and her supportive musicians, no less than we the listeners, are privileged to be along for the ride.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Love Lust.......2007-06-23

I just wanted to tell everyone that I love this double disc. Louie Vega is truly House and this is a wonderful example of what the music is all about. New tunes, classics, and the erotic imagery of Jonas Larsson are fused together in a package that puts the listener in an art gallery/club setting. This is an uplifting compilation that will make you forget your troubles, dance, and feel sexy at the same time. I love Lust.

5 out of 5 stars Some DJs think they know house music, and then there are those who actually do........2007-06-14

Louie Vega (Nuyorican Soul and Elements of Life) of super DJ group "Masters at Work" is the latter. Truly a master of the craft who proves here that he is deserving of that title "Master at Work". A double CD, 27 track non-stop mix of sexy, soulful, rhythmic harmonious grooves, and tropical beats. I just love it when I pick up an album in which a majority of the songs are above par.

The album "Lust, Art & Soul" is kind of a joint venture between Louie Vega and artist/photographer Jonas Larsson ("Off The Record") in which music and graphic art are fused and play off each other in an artistic image. "Lust recognizes that graphic art and music full of soul can feed off each other, satisfying the eye and the mind."

Even though the CD case is lacking a little in the department of photographs (let alone erotic ones), the music is sexy and erotic enough to fulfill Larsson's theme through sound. I think that this work hits its target and accomplishes what was trying to be done and conveyed.

While some tracks are very housey or have a Latin vibe to them, others sound very retro electric 80's like. But I am not complaining at all, on the contrary I am just pointing out the diversity that can be found from song to song. Thumbs up to Louie for compiling a great album of sexy beats!

Sage is an accomplished spoken word poet and emcee with several competitive titles to his name within both genres. He is equal parts serious and silly, but never fails to be entertaining. 18 tracks. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The right man, raise up one hand now, I'm taking you down.......2006-11-03

The first word that springs to mind, having just listened again to this album, is "depth". As mentioned in another review he verges on poetry to a hip-hop beat, but to typecast his sound as hip-hop would not give credit to the range of live instruments, issues, tones and styles he demonstrates or comments on.
It really is a great album but I can imagine if you are expecting the commercial sound of Busta, Elliot, Eminem etc. you are not going to get the gangster hip-hop sound you are used to.

In summary It's one continuous, refined and well produced, piece of music. But as always with something complexed you owe it to yourself to listen to the tracks Amazon provide.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums out there!.......2006-10-13

The ones who are trash-talking this album are probably less intelligent beings. Or maybe they just feel insecure because Sage is turning hiphop into almost everything it's not. Or wasn't.

This album is great. The songs are well crafted and some of them are unforgetable classics. This masterpiece is, without a doubt, the best CD Sage has given us, and definetly one of my personal top 10's. But if you're looking for songs about ca$h and crime, where curse words are used to fill out the blanks and women are constantly referred to as 'hoes' or 'bitches', don't buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical Abstraction at its finest..........2006-04-19

I have nothing to add to the brilliance of this record...there are over eighty entries below mine, but Personal Journals did affect my whole outlook on hip-hop when I first heard it four years ago, and made me see and appreciate this gifted emcee in a whole new light. Personal Journals is a triumph of a debut album that succeeds in every regard. From "crack pipes" on, the album seems to weave itself and at times you forget that the tracks are independent of each other since they are so finely intertwined. Sage's spoken wordplay is awe-inspiring and not at all watered down from his "sick of..." releases. The choice of producers adeptly complement his lyrics, and Personal Journals should be appreciated for what it really is: a classic on par with any of the best old-school hip-hop.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme fluctuations and temperature changes..........2006-03-19

Sage Francis is a phenomenal battle emcee. It doesn't show on this album...Fortunately Sage is also an incredible poet, and that shows on this album like red on white. To get a few things out of the way before I go into track listings I'll tell you if you are a fan of good rap then you should probably buy this album. If you like Cassidy, don't buy it...or buy it to shoot it with your gat. Sage Francis is "Different in a Different Way" and if you have never heard him before he may take some getting used to.

You will have to listen to some songs multiple times just to hear some incredible wordplay lines like "If you ever need to paint with razorblades and need a canvas use my skin," from Inherited Scars or to understand the layed on intracicies of a song like "Runaways."

Obviously there are no songs necessary to skip on here, but some stand out more than others. Some of my favorite tracks are: Crack Pipes, Personal Journalist, Inherited Scars, Broken Wings, Smoke and Mirrors, Eviction Notice, and Runaways.

If there is anything this CD is missing it's lack of collaborations, which isn't unusual for Sage or for his type of hip-hop-however I like the work he's done in the past with artists like Sixtoo, Buck 65, Slug, and Brother Ali (Doomage). This CD is very replayable, and although not the best from Sage darn close.

5 out of 5 stars Sage converted me to gangsterism.......2006-02-02

Ok, joking. I'm no gangster, but I definitely have a huge appreciation for rap/hip hop after hearing Mr. Francis. He's simply amazing! His music is art--original and mind-blowing. His lyrics are like spoken-word poems, so powerful and passionate.

I use to despise rap/hip hop, as if it were some mainstream poison my educated ears could not handle. Now I love it, all thanks to Sage.

This album displays Sage's poetic talent at its best. He's a deep, thoughtful man. His other stuff is good, but not as spectacular as Personal Journals. Sage will always be my homie.

Like many other senior bluesmen, Delbert McClinton is getting back to basics: Nothing Personal, his first album for New West, is the raw, stripped-down sort of material that sounds best when you know it comes from experience. It is this sense of things seen and done that pervades every track, and which prevents songs like "When Rita Leaves" and "Don't Leave Home Without It" from lapsing into sentimentality. The more emotional, personal numbers--the album's title notwithstanding, this is a highly personal album--are balanced with high-energy material, though even these songs, such as "Livin' It Down," have a serious thing or two to say. McClinton also neatly avoids several clichés. Take, for instance, "Nothing Lasts Forever," which has, as a theme, the necessity of living life to the fullest without burning yourself out. One might expect such a song to be an uptempo rocker. Instead, it moves along at an easy, swinging pace, the musical personification of following a path of moderation. Nothing Personal is full of little touches and techniques like this, moving out of the realm of merely good, and into the ranks of art. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Getting better with time!!.......2006-12-30

Great tunes, great grooves, great vocals!! Delbert's at the top of his craft to me right now. Great section, love Lynne Williams on drums. Delbert visits all the genres of Americana music encapsulating the pure tradition along with that distinct "Delbert" sound. The band is off the top on this disc, and will just flat groove you dealth. RIGHT ON DELBERT!!

5 out of 5 stars Delbert is the best.......2005-09-20

I'm never disappointed by Delbert. I chose this purchase because I heard him recently singing the song, When Rita Leaves, and when I did the research - this was the album with the song. It's not often you hear a rhumba - and this one is great! I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Delbert's the BEST of Texas music.......2005-07-31

Delbert has aged to PERFECTION. For the essential Delbert, you must get both Nothing Personal and Room to Breathe. Delbert's rocking is infectious, his wit is wry, his blues are pure Texas... he's simply THE BEST of Texas. Want some great humor and clever rhyming? Try Living it Down. When you listen to When Rita Leaves, you KNOW that man really did something awful to get a woman so mad that she... (you'd better listen to the lyrics). The joy of sex with a twist of humor? Try All Night Long. More sex? find it at the steamy Baggage Claim. The song I first heard by Delbert that got me wanting to hear more was Squeeze Me In...what a fun rocker. I'm proud to be from Delbert country!

5 out of 5 stars His best.......2004-08-17

I thought "One of the Fortunate Few" would be Delbert's best ever, forever. I was wrong. This is great stuff here. Took me a few listens to really get into it, but it is GREAT. "Read Me My Rights" is just the greatest. "When Rita Leaves," "Desperation," 'Don't Leave Home Without It," are all top, top notch. This CD has variety and quality from start to finish. This isn't just GREAT DELBERT, this is GREAT ANYBODY!!

5 out of 5 stars On the money..........2004-05-12

I've been a Delbert McClinton fan for 25 years or more. I had not bought anything in the last 10 years by him, so I recently bought this CD. Delbert financed it himself, took a year to record it, and released it in 2001. "Nothing Personal" did not blow me away. But I found it very easy to listen to. Good grooves, good feel. It's hard to believe he 60 years old. Anyway, I listened to it again. And again. I am not one to wear the grooves off any record (or should I say the pits off a CD), but in three weeks that I have had the CD, I must have played it through completely a couple of dozen times.

And are a few songs I stop and play again - simply because I like them. Songs like Squeeze Me In, Gotta Get It Worked On, Nothing Lasts Forever. He is so totally sincere in All There Is Of Me. Some really good piano and guitar playing. And Delbert's a soulful harp player.

It is an honest, sincere work with story lines I could certainly relate to, and I am sure others will too.

5 out of 5 stars SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH THE ENCHANTING DORIS DAY!.......2006-12-22

22 Personal Favorites with a voice and singing style that is sheer magic! Doris Day weaves a Christmas web of enchantment as she sings some truly beautiful holiday classics. Great renditions of "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Ol' Saint Nicholas" have a 1940's nostalgic charm. The soothing sound of the slow Christmas ballad, "Snowfall" is simply flawless, you can visually see the snowflakes drifting dreamily down, as Doris casts her wintry spell. I highly recommend this cd for endless listening pleasure during the Holidays and also the Dean Martin Christmas cd, "A Winter Romance." These Christmas cds will cheer up your Holidays with great entertainment that is truly one of a kind!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-11-07

There is no better way to bring in the warm, wonderful feelings of Christmas than with this album. Doris can enrich any song anytime, but with these traditional holiday favorites she is in top form. Just listen to these classic songs and the cozy, glowing feeling of Christmas takes over. You cannot go wrong with this set. The best female singer of the 20th Century.
