Customer Reviews:
The Young Lions.......2007-03-16
The prelude to greatness... before the elements went on to glorious heights, there were already a tight, progressive, positive band, with two powerhouse vocalists. One thing that is not mentioned much when commentary is made about the best band of the 70s is that they celebrated their African roots without a second thought.
Tracks like Mighty Mighty, Drum Song, Caribou, along with the spiritual overtones of songs like devotion exuded not only an awareness on their part of who they were, but they celebrated it without regard. This progressiveness continued up into the 80s and after a brief hiatus, continued into the 90s and recently with the wonderful release 'Illumination'.
Their legacy needs to be preserved by our young and held up as an example of what great music should be modeled after. Now with all that said, this album/CD is a delight to listen to even today. Thank God these old gems were preserved! Real music has become a novelty today.
Like Mr. White says, this music is Eternal.
Baddest Band in the Land.......2005-10-22
I was a Teenager when this Album was released on "Vinyl" (for those of you from the CD Age ask your Grandparents). Back then I loved every Song on the Album, and that love stands pat today as Earth, Wind & Fire's Music from those days Song just as Beautiful Today as it did then, and there'll never be another Band like them. I have every E.W.F. Album made in the 70"s on CD now. Some of the best purchases I ever made.
WHAT WE HAVE IS A BRAND NEW SOUND!.......2004-09-08
Whoa! Even with the enlightening evolution of EW&F's fourth release, Head To The Sky, nobody could have seen this coming. This album is nothing short of bold and brilliant. It is an all-out assault on several musical genres, as well as the full emergence of a newly refined and crystalized EW&F sound.
"Mighty Mighty" is an eyebrow-raising funk experience in under 3 minutes, that boldly uplifts those of African descent, completes with fierce guitar licks, a snaky bassline, and confident vocals that all overflow with attitude. I hope that soundproof booth wasn't made of glass, because Phillip Bailey certainly would have shattered it. Other immediate standouts are the arm-waving anthem "Devotion", the much too funky "Kalimba Story" and the wordless "Drum Song" and "Caribou". You must love "Tee Nine Chee Bit" for it's lowdown Ohio Players-like feel. An album like this could have very easily taken a wrong turn, but the fact is that this one doesn't. It is random perfection. The only possible thing you could criticize is the somewhat lazy sounding vocals on "Caribou", and still this is overshadowed by the fact that you can't get this sound anywhere else.
This album crosses pop, funk, gospel, jazz, R&B and African music barriers full-stride without missing a step. It's also saturated with musical, vocal, spiritual and commercial prowess without being preachy. How can you even call yourself an Earth, Wind & Fire fan without owning this musical goldmine???!!! Even the bonus tracks are really bonus. Get it while the gettin' is good, my mellow.
It sounds like they had fun recording this one!.......2003-10-31
Of course Earth Wind and Fire have tons of hits, spanning a couple decades, but the gems on this release are the non-single tracks. While both hits "Mighty Mighty" and "Devotion" are great, this CD is simply full of music from beginning to end that is funky, soulful, and fun. The title track "Open Our Eyes" is a wonderful gospel song, and the minor hit "Feeling Blue" is a great ballad which you may remember, but the highlights are the added tracks including the funky "Fair But So Uncool" and the gospel inspired soul in "Ain't No Harm to Moan". You will love the improvised jamming in "Drum Song" and the African inspired "Kalimba Story".
This is a wonderful collection of music and you can tell they had a lot of fun recording it. The music sounds fresh and alive, which is remarkable considering it has been nearly 30 years since it was recorded. A great and underrated release from one of the most talented recording groups of all time.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Get Yer Nazz Here!.......2005-08-05
"Open Our Eyes", the latest Nazz anthology really doesn't sport anything new, except for a cover of "Train Kept A-Rollin'". It is, however, a very complete catalogue of the work proper that the Nazz did. For sticklers this CD set will rankle, because the song orders for the original albums have been screwed up in favor of a more thematic approach. Generally the anthology is set up where the first CD is the hard-rocking side and the second one is the more cerebral one. As a result, most of the first album and some of the third takes up the first CD, whereas the bulk of the second and third albums comprise the second. This doesn't, however, prevent the best songs from opening the first disc! "Open My Eyes" was/is/and probably will always be one of the best songs that Todd Rundgren ever wrote. "Hello It's Me", the big single, follows, but fast forward a couple of songs and you get to Rundgren's pre-Something/Anything opus, the ethereal, string-driven "If That's The Way You Feel". This, along with "Forget All About It" and "A Beautiful Song" are the real reasons to buy this anthology-if you don't already have the Nazz on CD! For those who don't know, Rundgren would go on to have an immensely successful career as both artist and producer. As in the Nazz, his songs would straddle the fence between the human (the soulful ballads) and the absurd (his sometimes annoying obsession with technology and vaudeville). If you want a ground zero song for this dialectic, listen to the wonderfully whimsical Meridian Leeward. Also included in the anthology package are some good liner notes where Rundgren describes how the band came to be as well as some of the internal dynamics that were happening while the band was active.
Everything in one place...however..........2005-04-25
If you've got the 3 albums on CD from Rhino, the only thing you're missing is the one bonus track Train kept a-Rollin'. That can be found on the vinyl-only Best of Nazz (also from Rhino). The single album reissues did one thing this collection didn't do: it kept the tracks in their original running order, and that's how these albums sound best.
Same versions as on original LP's.......2004-04-25
"A Music Fan" wrote in his/her review:
"....the version of "Only One Winner" on this collection is not the same as the one on Nazz III, so a completist would still have to buy that CD. The Nazz III version had Todd singing, the version on here is, as best as I can tell, the same as the version on "13th and Pine", with Stewkey singing...."
Not true. Stewkey sang the original version on "Nazz III"; the same version found on this Anthology CD. Stewkey does indeed sing lead on the "13th and Pine" version; but it's only a slightly different mix of the same song. Todd sings lead on the version found on the "Todd Sings" CD. [confused yet?? LOL]
I've been a NAZZ fan since their beginning and would tell you that this CD is worth seeking out. Too bad the compilers didn't put the songs in the same order as they appeared on the original 3 LP's.......
Finally, a great band gets the justice they deserve.......2004-02-26
During the latter half of the sixties, a number of classic rock bands emerged, but sadly, most of them received no recognition whatsoever. Among these bands was a little group called Nazz. The group was actually the first major group to feature the legendary Todd Rundgren. The band got its big break when they opened for the Doors in 1967. They then recorded two albums, and put together some of their final outtakes and released them as their third album. At last, this material has been brought together in a single Nazz anthology. Read on for my review of this collection.
PROS:
-If you're too cheap or too lazy to hunt down all of Nazz's recordings, this collection is a fine alternative, because all of their songs are here for your listening pleasure.
-The booklet included with the set contains some handy new liner notes. If you're gonna do a so-called anthology, you may as well included the best notes possible on the band!
-The band originally recorded three albums, but this compilation brings everything together on just two compact discs!
CONS:
-The songs are way out of their original sequence. Songs have been grouped together so that songs that sound alike appear next to one another? Why the hell would they do this?
-As someone else stated, at least one track from this collection is NOT the same as the original version which appeared on the Nazz III album. Why the hell not?
-The sound quality is better for the individual remastered versions of the band's albums than it is in this set. Accordingly, you're better off hunting those down.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a very good set, but it does have some flaws. I strongly recommend buying all of the band's albums individually as opposed to buying this set, but if you can't find all of them (I'm thinking they're out of print), this makes an excellent alternative.
Great band.......2004-01-23
What makes this a "5" to me is that it has all of their songs in one package. Yeah, some of the songs are pretty strange and makes it evident why the second lp was not a double album but that was the essence of NAZZ. They were hit and miss. Who knows, without this band we may never have heard of Todd Rundgren. I must also mention that the liner notes are most interesting with many comments about the evolution of the group coming from Todd himself. For every fledgling musician that had a combo back in the late 60s this was a group that you could emulate and copy. You could play these songs at the roller rink and no one would give you any crap about performing "obscure" material. Everyone in the audience liked NAZZ even if they had no clue who they were.

Customer Reviews:
Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30
This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!
One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10
This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.
Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11
I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.

An Important Stepping Stone.......2003-10-01
This is Earth,Wind & Fire's third album featuring Phillip
Bailey and is by far they're strongest pre-"That's The Way Of the World" albums with Bailey-featuring the singer in prime form on the classic "Devotion" and as counterpoint on the equally
powerful uptempo grooves of "Mighty Mighty" and the slyly
humorous "Fair But So Uncool".The big surprise is the jazzy
"Spasmodic Movements" (odd for a funk group to do be-bop really)
but along with the African-influenced "Drum Song",the gospel
soul of the tital song and the hard-edged funk jams "Kalimba Story" and "Tee Nine Chee Bit" this serves as a time capsule of
varrious strains of Afro-American music cira 1974 so you get just about everything you want in that vein AND catchy tunes to
match-EWF's whole purpose anyway.
Back When EWF was More Earthy..........2000-06-13
...I encourage anyone who is a big fan of EWF Cosmic Brass Band sound as represented in the current releasing of their greatest hits to go back and listen to some of the earlier albums. That's because after the CD/album 'All'n'All', I feel that they had lost some of the rawness and realness and substituted it with slick and overproduced megasongs. Now far be it for me to understate their influence, especially, on urban gospel. But if the listener is like me, then sometimes he wants something less stellar, more earthy...
This album to me represents that mix well. Heavily Charles Stepney influenced, it is raw and real where it needs to be, and cosmic where it need to be. I just love songs like "Tee Nine Inch Bit" because they're done in a fun spirit...and we need a lotta more songs done in a fun spirit. "Feeling Blue" is quite a bit of easy listening jazz--it almost sounds like a fly the friendly skies airline commercial. But it still grooves, dig? "Open our Eyes" is a song taken from Stepney's stinct as a composer/writer/arranger with the Chess Records group...where he met young drummer Maurice White. Originally done by the group the Gospel Clefs, done here it is a heartfelt performance highlighted by young Phillip Bailey's off the chart falsetto...(am I the only one who was in awe when Bailey and Jessica Cleaves hit those notes together in earlier EWF efforts?)
"Fair But So Uncool", "Caribou" (the studio in the Rockies), "Mighty, Mighty"...How can you not enjoy what they have done on this production? More raw, less stellar, more earthy. It would be a great addition to anyone's CD collection...
But don't take my word on it, listen for yourself...
Our Eyes Have Been Opened.......2000-05-17
"Open Our Eyes" is the best studio album in Earth, Wind And Fire's extensive catalog, as it mixes the underground sound of the first few albums with the highly commercial sound of what was to come. Side one of the original vinyl featured five perfectly crafted pop songs which literally defined tasteful funk, R&B and pop in the mid-70s; the funk songs groove hard while the ballads still sound earnest (and are free from the cheezy orchestrations which mar those on the later albums). Everything is catchy, melodic and well sequenced; the second side features mini-explorations of all of the group's styles to date, including jazz ("Spasmodic Movements"), Santana-like jamming (Caribou), African percussion ("Drum Song") and street funk ("Tee Nine Chee Bit"). By the time the group sum up the proceedings with the haunting spiritual title track, the listener is overwhelmed by the group's talent and sense of style. 'Nuff said.
real solid.......1999-11-15
i love devotion, feeling blue has a strong brazilian vibe going on.that's maurice white's genius able to fuse different vibes and sounds.mighty mighty is still funky.
A BLAST of good vibes!.......1999-10-22
It's not often you hear a song as irresistible as "Mighty Mighty"! On their 5th album, EWF was getting it together tighter and smoother than ever. Each album seemed better than the one before it. Standouts here also include "Kalimba Story", "Devotion", "Drum Song" and "Open Out Eyes"-- but I also can't help but laugh when I hear 2 guys discussing their "problems" with women on "Tee Nine Chee Bit". Power, class, style AND humor! And dig that cool logo. These guys had it all.

Seller asking too much for the product........2005-12-08
I have bought CD's from this site, numerous times. You as a seller are asking way too much for this product. I would be willing to pay $9.99 for this item.
Loved this CD!!!!!!.......2004-08-03
I have had this CD since I was 15, I am now 23, and I am looking to purchase a new one. This CD is sooooo great! It continues to minister to me today.
OPEN OUR EYES.......2003-04-27
This is one of my all time favorite album's. Miltun Brunson does a great job of producing traditional gospel. This is why his music is so hard to find.
