Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
His First was His Best.......2007-05-25
Avant is an underrated artist in the game, but i think he rushes his albums and they aren't as good as "My Thoughts". This album had very good songs as well as inspirational like "Why". This album touched a few topics and the songs seemed liked they were well written by Avant and Steve Huff but they lost some steam along the way. The rest of his albums suffered since but this one definitely is worth a listen.
Avant.......2007-03-12
This album is fantastic, i love it, every song you can isten to over and over again if you are a fan of avant.
I LOVE IT.......2005-11-03
I actually bought this cd the week it came out a couple of years ago. But for some reason I felt the need to rate it. Now let me just say that I love love R&B. I love albums that I can put into my cd player and basically walk away from it. This is one of those cds that you can do that with. The lyrics range from diffrent outlooks and everyone can relate to at least 2. I would go on track by track but I cant say enough about it. This cd is a must for every R&B colection......GET THE ALBUM IF YOU DON"T HAVE IT AND IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT Y NOT PLAY IT. IT'LL MAKE YOU FEEL AS GOOD AS I FEEL WHEN I LISTEN TO IT
Album sounds very R. Kelly-ish.......2005-07-20
This was a good first effort for his debut. But most of the time Avant sounds too much like his Chicago competitor R. Kelly, since this album was recorded in the same city. The same bump and grind themes so common in R's songs are felt within this album. Steve Huff's production wasn't as well known in 2000 before his 2001 assault on three different albums. But it showed Avant's promise as an R&B singer and he has gotten better. Album #2 is really his best.
avant is no r .kelly...... .......2004-11-22
avant is a great artist... one of the only r&b male artist i will listen to nowadays (van hunt, glenn lewis, and donell jones are the others i can listen to without trippin)....i love his first cd... i like 'seperated'. i remember this song hit hard. every1 felt this song because mostpeople went through a situation like that. but i like the remix w/ kelly rowland of destiny's child better... it gives the girl a chance to say something...
'my first love' w/ keke wyatt is one of the best tracks on the album.... this is probably the best love song (practically the only one since every1 is talkin about cheating and drama) to come out in years.... 'serious' is also a great song...
if you like real men singing about real situations and no exaggerations.... buy this album.... its packed with real issues (good issues that you can learn from)
4.6 out of 5 stars

Really really good CD.......2006-03-18
This is a really really good CD. You will LOVE it. Really really good lyrics, songwriting, voice, vocal arrangements, musical arrangements. Inspired, intense, grabs you from the first listen. Every song is different. Alice Russell is a force and she keeps getting better. This is very original work, great fun to listen to. It makes me feel a big "EEEYYYOWWWW! This is SO cool!" Songs 3, 4 and 7 are my initial standout favorites, but the others are growing and may take over. What a wonder Alice's voice is, and with her fabulous writing...so fresh, gritty, real. YUM!
Awesome. The British are coming!!! The British are coming!!!.......2006-03-05
I love this album. I hope one day that this woman will make her way over to the U.S. Im trying to wonder why Simon Cowell is not trying to Endorse this woman. Heck she's from his country. but I love. If she ever came to the US she would be dangerous.
Please refer to my other review for additional comments about her other album.
listen listen listen.......2006-01-06
I am always looking for fresh female vocalists with a strong sound and interesting tone and it's hard to find music of this sound that doesn't lapse into the weepy love cliche sad-bag but this CD provides hope and good times! Alice Russell is fantastic!(I've been dancing in my room secretly kind-of-music). Lyrical ideas are pretty cool- admittedly sometimes I can't understand what exactly she's saying but the drive of the tunes allows you to happilly make up what you can't make out.
I definitely recommend at least checking out the samples.
Love it.

Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10
I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.
Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22
Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.
Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12
Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.
Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26
This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

awesome baritone.......2002-05-01
This is a great CD to me because I play Baritone of course. But this is a great CD even if you've never even heard of a Baritone before. This music will get your attention no matter who you are!
A Euphonium player's essential CD.......2002-03-13
Plain and simple- if you want to here what a euphonium player should strive for, this too-good-to-be-true CD is it.
What a wonderful performance by both the soloist and band........1999-09-11
The euphonium isn't as well known as other brass instruments, and I think Michael J. Colburn will help it to be better known with this CD. Mr. Colburn brings out the beautiful sound of this instrument. I recommend this CD for anyone who likes to listen to virtuoso solos and wishes to hear a great euphonium player.
Great Euphonium Playing!.......1999-01-15
This is really great CD! Michael Colburn is a great performer. I could listen to this over and over and over again...
An excellent CD played on the best of Brass instruments.......1998-12-17
This is a CD that one can listen to countless times. The virtuoso playing and beautiful tone produced by Michael aptly display the characteristics of the euphonium. The selections are for college and graduate level players, as well as the occasionally "gifted" highschooler. A must hear, and a must buy.

Germany's answer to Soilwork.......2007-04-10
This is the first I've heard of this band and I must say I'm impressed. Razor sharp melodic deathmetal from Germany but it could easily be from Sweden. Definitely in the vein of Soilwork, but heavier and lacking Soilwork's devotion to major pentatonic soloing. At times they also recall later period Dark Tranquility, particularly their penchant for weird electonic noises behind the music. As far as choice cuts go, Survival Scars is the pick of the litter (at least in my humble opinion). The title track Vulcanus is a long instrumental with effective hypnotic qualities. For fans of post-Gothenburg melodic Swidish death metal this would be a worthy choice.
Continued progression from one of Germany's finest.......2007-02-12
After the incredible lasting power of Hell Sweet Hell, calling Vulcanus one of my most anticipated discs of 2007 would be a great understatement. Fear My Thoughts has never been one to make the same album twice if you go back through their catalogue. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to recognize them as the same band if you played a song from 23 (their debut) and Vulcanus back to back. It's been a treat to see their evolution over the past three albums, from The Great Collapse forward and Vulcanus might just be their most fulfilling album yet.
Whereas many might have said that Hell Sweet Hell saw them emmerge as 'another melodic death band', Vulcanus sees the band challenge themselves to create an album that falls in line with HSH but expands and diversifies the formula tenfold. There are the thrashy melodic death tracks like opener "Accompanied by Death", "Accelerate or Die" (featuring Schmier and Mike from Destruction), "Lost in Black" and the neckbreaker "Survival Scars" that offer a logical progression from the previous disc but some new twists as well. There's a more melodic side of the band that comes out on "Blankness", "Soul Consumer", and the Opeth-like "Culture of Fear", as well as an experimentation with more proggy elements in tracks like "Wasteland" (wow, spoken word can work!) and the instrumental title track. But wait, there's more! One can find more straight-forward, old school death metal sound and groove with "Both Blood" and even some black metal elements within "Stamp of Credence". It's obvious the band has worked hard and upped their songwriting abilities to avoid being pigeonholed into one particular genre.
As with any album that stands the test of time, I'm hard-pressed to identify any "favorite" tracks, as I'm always noticing new nuances each time I hear the disc. There's the more obvious moments such as the clearly Soilwork-influenced chorus of "Gates to Nowhere", the addictive groove of the wisely chosen single of "Blankness", the growl-along goodness of "Lost in Black", or the savagely melodic riffs of "Survival Scars" that are some of best I've heard since Soilwork's "Possessing the Angels". But then there's the more subtle moments such as the gorgeous melodic lead in "Both Blood" at 2:50, the brooding atmosphere of "Stamp of Credence", or the keyboards that lace "Wasteland" that bring me back to these songs over and over again.
I don't think this disc could have come out any better for Fear My Thoughts. As I've mentioned, the songwriting and musicianship has noticably increased and the songs feel just as engrossing on the 50th listen as the first. Mathias' growls have been some of my favorite in metal but his clean vocals have improved drastically from Hell Sweet Hell. At this point I'd say he's up there with Christian Alvestam as one of metal more underappreciated vocalists. Finally, Jacob Hansen's production is easily one of the best to date, as everything is clear but there's just enough crunch in the guitars (see "Blankness") to keep it decidedly heavy.
Vulcanus was an extremely rare circumstance where I was still playing the previous disc quite regularly (after 2 years even!) but it has more than proved it's worth. As a major step-up from Hell Sweet Hell (though I'll have to wait 2 years to see if it holds up the same) and having major label-backing (Century Media), I'd say that 2007 is the year that Fear My Thoughts finally breaks through to the metal mainstream. It's February, but I have a feeling that this is one of the strongest discs you'll hear this year. For any melodic metal fans, this is 2007's first mandatory purchase.
awsome melodic death metal with a twist.......2007-01-28
i just finished listening to this album. i gotta say i really like it. i like is as a whole even better then their last album. its their heavyest album yet. and the musicianship is great. they all play their parts very well. the guitars can be really heavy and agressive they play in harmoney allot. really cool guitar lines and riffs. at times they do clean guitar parts that remind me of opeth. my only complaint about the guitars are there is not as many solos as the last album. the arrangements are still great but they could use a few more solos in certain parts. and damn the drummer is really good. he has great timeing. and the volcalist is really good too. he screams, growls, and sings very good. the album has lots of really fast agressive songs and also more melodic songs with influenses of jazz and classic rock. this album is very intense melodic metal. i highly reccomend this. if your a fan of in flames, soilwork, or even opeth these guys will probly be right up your ally!

FMT Best Record To Date, Although Lost In The Sea Of Metalcore Stagnation.......2006-01-08
I've heard all four Fear My Thoughts albums (from their debut "23" up to this release) and it's been interesting to see how the band has evolved from a chaotic, noisecore outfit to the metalcore sound they embody now. However every evolution the band has gone through (most notably the jump they took between "Vitriol" and "The Great Collapse") has strengthened them in every way. To be honest I heard "The Great Collapse" and wasn't really impressed. It wasn't a bad record, but in some places it seemed like they were trying too hard, and in others not hard enough. It was also their first album to take on the swedish melodeath influence and transform into "metalcore". Whatever you want to label this cd as, be it metal, hardcore, melodic death, or metalcore is fairly unimportant, as the music should speak for itself. And on "Hell, Sweet Hell" it does.
First off the vocals have improved so much on this record. If this is your first Fear My Thoughts record, you really won't appreciate how much this band has stepped up their craft since their last outing. Listen to any of their earlier releases and you will understand why I believe this to be their best effort. Where on "The Great Collapse" the vocals came off sometimes cheesy, often sounding too much like the proto cookie-monster style (and the less than stellar production didn't help), "Hell, Sweet Hell" sees the vocals primarily going to route of a raging, throaty scream, occasionally mixing in some deep growling. Like I said you really have to listen to any of the band's previous releases to understand my appreciation for the improvement this band has undergone.
Musically, they taken heavy influence from swedish melodic death this time around, ala Killswitch Engage. Unfortunately though this guitar style is far from original or refreshing right now, which is ultimately why people are coming down so hard on these guys. While it's not necessarily ground breaking, the band's musicians show an apt ability for playing this style of music that has become fairly popular now. The excellent guitar riffery on "My Delight" (love the accenting background fill solo behind the bridge at around 2:07) and "Sadist Hour" is worthy of noting, as it stands side by side with the genre's heavyweights. The leads found in the title track and "Dying Eyes" are also extremely accomplished. The drumming is top notch, as with most metalcore, although nothing jaw dropping. It basically follows the formula, which is what most of the record does...
...And is ultimately is what detracts from Fear My Thoughts appeal. While they are talented musicians and great song writers, they just sound way too much like everything else. There's little distinction between them and most other bands in the same music scene. While they do add some interesting synths and electronic elements in places ("The Master's Call", "Windows For The Dead"), it's hardly enough to make them amazingly different from anything you've probably heard before. The addition of clean vocals this time around are also a major downfall. I like my fair share of melody in heavy music, but where Fear My Thoughts tries, it doesn't work well. Songs like the opener "Windows For The Dead" and track 3 "In The Hourglass" are rolling along fine until the melodic crooning starts. While it's far from being a whiny, high-pitched emo howl, the melody just doesn't fit with the band or it's sound. "Trying To Feel..." is ambitious, and especially in the musical department it is welcomed addition, but the vocals don't really do much to take the song to a higher level. There's no denying the band is at their absolute best on pieces like "My Delight" and "Sadist Hour" where they're not trying to throw out catchy choruses. There's also a significant lack of breakdowns as compared to other previous releases, furthering the comparison to metal, rather than their roots in hardcore.
Still "Hell, Sweet Hell" is definitely Fear My Thoughts most accomplished record. When reviewing I had to compare it to the band's earlier albums, which in turn makes this look like a masterpiece. Compared to the rest of today's metal and hardcore I'd say it's more of a 3 star, maybe 3.5 at the most, but in relation to their earliest recordings this definitely the band's opus (4 or 4.5). If you do listen to this record, I'd encourage you to also listen to anything previous you can get from the band ("The Great Collapse" is easy, "Vitriol" and "23" are harder to find) to see how much significant growth this band has taken. For that alone I give them credit, and that's why I like this record. It's best to listen to every once in a while, or hear live, because constant exposure will mostly likely lead to boredom. Overall not a bad record in the least, and undoubtably FMT's finest effort yet. Hopefully these guys can continue to grow and keep evolving, because they have tons of potential. As for now "Hell, Sweet Hell" will do.
Fear this album..........2005-09-14
I understand this band was a metalcore album, and this is the only album I have by them. I will tell you right now that it is fantastic. It has heavy melodic death elements, hints of industrial metal, and some metalcore elements. But in general, this is a great melodic death album. Actually, many of the songs sound nothing like American music. You do not understand how many times I've listened to this album after getting it, which is rare because it either has to be original and catchy, or somewhat inspiring. What I truly enjoyed was how some songs had singing, while others were very heavy. These elements are presented with 2 different types of vocals. My favorite, being the growling vocals, sounds monstrous combined with european-sounding riffs (very death-metalish), and Fear My Thought's sound is nowhere near just imitation. When I listen to bands like As I Lay Dying, I feel as if they are trying to copy Swedish bands. Fear My Thoughts is nothing like that, and they can very well be passed on as a European band in some songs. In others, I did feel industrial moments such as "In the Hourglass." The singing is put to a minimal, and isn't used as part of choruses. I highly recommend this album, as I come back for it many times while listening to music.
Hell Sweet Hell: the melting pot of metalcore and melo death.......2005-09-10
I haven't heard any Fear My Thoughts albums before, but I know this is their fourth album, and by many touted as their heaviest and most 'metal' release. From what I understand, Fear My Thoughts used to be more involved in the metalcore scene, until they decided to bring in more Gothenburg elements, utilising more melodic passages, guitar harmonies, some synths, as well as a thrashier approach for the heavier stuff. Whether they've fully achieved their goal is debatable, however.
It is true that some songs certainly have the fingerprints of Swedish death metal bands like At the Gates and the more technical arangements heard on earlier Darkane discs. "My Delight" and "Sweetest Hell" are both insanely melodic in structure, but at the same time, there is an obvious forced effort on the band's part to inject some truly unnecessary scream vocals in the mix, just to keep true to the Killswitch Engage-type of singing. While the thrashy riffage mixed with speedy drum work on these songs is highly impressive, Matthias von Ockl's vocal style make them a hard listen. Similarly, the more metalcore works on this album, such as "Windows for the Dead", "In the Hourglass" and "Ghosts of Time", are filled with rather bland generic guitar riffs that seem to repeat themselves not only in one tune, but pretty much every other track. Clean vocal harmonies are used to create a more catchy chorus but hardly blend with the intense Gothenburg guitar melodies that are pushed into the song for reasons I don't understand. This just strengthens my opinion that, when writing this album, the band must have been in a huge identity crisis, not knowing whether they should play metalcore or melodic death with nothing new to offer. Some bands just need to realize that the fusion of metalcore and Gothenburg rarely succeeds, mainly because they are entirely different genres with no common ground.
Still there is a good dose of dual harmonic lead guitar work, with interesting stop-start breaks, and the occasional synth line that helps lift the choruses. Sadly, repeated listens only serve to reveal how many recycled riffs and drum fills permeat Fear My Thoughts' songcraft. The only exception is the last song, built around acoustic guitars, entirely clean sung vocals that slighlty border on gothic rock, spoken words, huge keyboard atmospheres that surround the guitar theme, only to be replaced by the initial acoustic melody in the outro. The album was produced by Jacob Hansen known for his great work with Mercenary and Communic.
Fear My Thoughts strikes me as one of those bands you'll hear a couple of times, but will rarely want to go back to their albums. They really have to forge themselves a more defined musical path if they want to survive in a genre with so many metalcore and melodic death bands.

I was pretty excited to hear FMT had a new cd coming out. The Great Collapse was indeed well, but i thought they could have done better. and they did. Hell Sweet Hell blew my mind. i had heard the songs from their label, Lifeforce. i was so impressed i had to buy the cd. everything about this cd is great. the few clean vocals that there are, are great. his high and low screams are killer. the melodies and thrash style make this cd great. and yes they do have breakdowns. imagine something along the lines of In Flames' Colony/Clayman with some breakdowns...good stuff
