About the Artist
Innovative, driven, compassionate, and powerful…just a few words that come to mind when attempting to describe Oakland, CA born singer, songwriter, and spoken word artist Jennifer Johns. Since birth, Jennifer has been making this world "just a little bit more melodic" with her some times boisterous, some times soft, but always powerful voice. If you were to ask her when she started singing she would say, "I don't remember a day that I didn't."  However, her first experience on stage was at church at the tender age of 3 and she hasn't stopped since.  Reflecting on her diverse musical influences as a youth, from  Earth, Wind and Fire, Phoebe Snow, and Sade,  to Paul Simon, Whitney Houston and Sweet Honey in the Rock, as well as the , West Indian rhythms that filled her home as a youngster.  And then there was hip-hop….

Jennifer says it was somewhere between Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh's "The Show",  Rakim's "Know What's on Your Mind", and Queen Latifah's "Ladies First" that she first fell in love with hip-hop music and soon identified as a part of the culture. She says "just as I am music,  I am hip hop".  At 13 Jennifer pursued her love of music by joining the award winning Oakland Youth Chorus where she studied music in numerous languages under the tutelage of nationally revered conductors Trente Morante, Elizabeth Seja Minn, and Grammy nominee Melonie DeMore. Jennifer soon graduated to OYC's professional a capella ensemble, Vocal Motion where she was afforded the opportunity to work and perform with such musical luminaries as Nancy Wilson, Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson, Melissa Manchester, and James Ingram.

At 17, Jennifer began to look deeper into a professional career in music and began performing locally in Oakland. 3 years later, after making "a little noise" at home, she decided it was time to move to Los Angeles where she quickly built a name for herself and began recording with Goodvibe Recordings artists The Anonymous and BIG DRO.   During her time in Los Angeles, Jennifer became a member of both SAG and AFTRA, securing voiceover work for commercials with the LA Weekly, Macy's, and Pacific Bell. She also stayed busy building pure.love entertainment a media company she founded in 2001 that produced live music and spoken word events which quickly became a staple in the rapidly growing Los Angeles spoken-soul community.   In 2003, having built her fan base through pure.love, Jennifer made the decision to isolate herself in Seattle to record songs for an upcoming project.

And now, with the release of her new EP heavyelectromagneticsoularpoeticjunglehop co-produced by Grammy nominee Spontaneous on her own label, Nayo Movement Music, Jennifer is set to give the world a taste of her "Electric Soul."  With the release of Jennifer's EP heavy…, listeners can expect some of what you love about  Sade, a lot of what we needed from Lauryn, the warmth and conversational energy of Jill and the mystery of Dido. Hands down Jennifer Johns is a heavyelectromagnetic force to be reckoned with.

Recently,  Jennifer has performed around the US with artists like Common, KRS-1, De La Soul, John Legend, Medusa, Gift of Gab, Souls of Mischief, and Mystic.  In addition Ms. Johns just spent her summer on a 6 week tour through Europe with Blackalicious.

5 out of 5 stars Butter!.......2007-05-10

What can be said? This album is appropriately titled. Thats exactly what it is. I think this type of music is the next evolution for House Music lovers. There are no misses on this album. Well except her take on Sade. That did not do it for me. The rest are incredible. I like that its not too popular.

I heard this album on Rhapsody. Actually I heard one of the tracks. I loved it. So I bought the whole album. As each song played I would say to myself, yea I wanted to buy that song, did not know it was her. turns out the song I bought the album for was the 'bonus' track at the end. an amazing album I am eager to play for friends while driving.

Pure butter!

Jennifer's music is amazing. I love the blend of poetry, thoughts, and various music styles. Every song is a different part of her mind, and she isn't afraid to really get into the music. Music needs more artists like Jennifer Johns!

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of it.......2006-03-11

One of those hard to define artists except that she truly is an artist. The sound varies from up-tempo jungle/break to mellow thoughtfull soul. She is a great lyricist and singer. She lives within her music.

5 out of 5 stars touches your soul.......2006-07-04

I purchased this CD over a year ago after a 5 month search. I purchased it for the song "O". Once it arrived I was in love with the music after the 1st song. The whole CD is HOT. She has a few other songs I recently heard on her myspace but have been unable to find.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS STILL AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.......2005-12-30

Don't pay any attention to what it says up top! This album is still available on amazon.com but it is listed under a different product number. Just do a search under "jennifer johns" and pull up the other listing and you can order it no problem. Keep supporting that independent music baby!!!

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2005-11-16

I first heard a song by this artist on Rhapsody and immediately had to hear more. The album is an eclectic mix of music. Very different. I'm really enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars amazing CD by little-known artist..........2005-11-14

I picked this up at Tower Records, intending to listen to another CD (JoJo's, if you must know) and I heard this by accident. After the first amazing track, "Heavy..." I knew I had to get it. I rarely buy CDs based on one listen to a song, but I did this time. It's beautiful and amazing and truly "soularpoetic." I found out later that Jennifer Johns is from Oakland, thus maybe someday I will get to hear her in person. It's somewhat hard to find, but her website, which is her name dot com, allows you to buy it, as well as (...)

This CD is one of very few I've bought on the strength of one song. Anthony Hamilton's Comin' from where I'm from, which I bought after seeing the video once, and Brooke Valentine's Chain Letter, after seeing her perform on AOL Sessions, are it - an artist has to really really impress me. (I bought Lewis Taylor unheard, based on a strong recommendation by the late great Aaliyah). Jennifer Johns deserves more recognition, but it's hard because she's on an independent label.

1. Heavy... the stellar opening track. Strong bass, hyper song, "if I lead you will you follow me to the sun..." Great Song! 11/10
2. Do you believe in love - sweet, soothing, she does some spoken-word as well as singing. Nice after Heavy's frenetic pace. 10/10
3. Beautiful: soothing. 8/10
4. Fallen: haunting. 9/10
5. Never Give Up: ok, but not my favorite. 7/10
6. Truth: for some reason, I never remember this song. 6/10
7. O: great, very passionate. 9/10
8. Cherish the Day: a great cover of Sade's classic. 10/10
9. Fire: another party-starter. 10/10
10. Afraid of Me (bonus track): long and hard to get to (it's after a bunch of blank tracks) but WORTH IT. The best track, after "Heavy..." Jennifer's asking why her man is afraid of love, it's quiet and melancholic but not sad, if that makes sense. Meditative. 11/10
