Caveat emptor, as the Romans once said: Let the buyer beware. There is a very good reason why the word "interpretations" is used in the title. Anyone looking for classic, standard, note-for-note renditions of their favorite Christmas songs will not find them here. That said, anyone looking for a unique and stylized collection of soulful holiday songs will not be disappointed--especially those who are Boyz II Men fans. The Boyz's rich harmonies and soaring flights of vocal fancy are their sonic calling card, and they display their talents at every turn here. Their reverence for the holiday is particularly evident with their treatment of "Silent Night." "Let It Snow," "You're Not Alone," "Share Love," and "Cold December" are also included. Why "A Joyous Song" is not already a Christmas classic is hard to say. Here's one last warning: don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to listen to some of these songs long after the holiday season is over. --Steve Gdula
From Parents' Choice®
With the huge popularity the vocal quartet Boyz 11 Men enjoys these days, this collection of holiday music makes a particularly "hip" gift for the pre-teen or teen on your shopping list. Rather than rely on holiday standards, the Boyz sing newly composed Christmas songs by a variety of tunesmiths.Virtually every track contains themes of love, concern for the homeless and one's fellow man, the joy of giving rather than receiving, and spiritual salvation. Not surprisingly, the Boyz's vocal harmonizing is rich, uncommon and wonderful, making the messages they carry that much more meaningful.

Soul Christmas Music At It's Best.......2007-01-04
After releaing their massive debut Christmas Interpretations, Boyz II Men decided to give fans a early Christmas present with the disc Christmas Interpretations. The group's four part harmony is present on the gospel flavored Silent Night and Let It Snow which added rising star Brian Mcknight to the mix. Many topics are covered on the disc including such as depression and suffering ("Why Christmas") and loneliness and poverty ("Cold December Nights"). It's also balanced with songs about the joys of giving (the elegant "Share Love," "Do They Know") and, of course, love ("You're Not Alone," "Who Would Have Thought"). All in all beter than most Christmas albums and a nice tide over until the II album.
Awesome.......2006-12-09
This is my favorite holiday cd of all time. They did an awesome job of giving the holiday feel yet putting their own twist on the traditional songs. The non-traditional songs are wonderful and in my opinion go on my list of christmas classics. This is one for everyone to place in his/her collection.
Best Christmas album.......2006-11-15
I never really liked Christmas Albums but I like this one! Even though it has been thirteen years since the release of this album it's still the best. It not only brings the traditional song such as silent night, but it has an r&b flavor that makes it really good. If your tired of all the "Jingle Bells" and "Here Comes Santa Clause" songs and want something nice, smooth, and relaxing this is the christmas album for you!!!
Not traditional, but still great.......2006-10-13
There is no denying that Boyz II Men is one of the greatest musical groups of our generation. Their harmonies, especially on "Silent Night", are amazing. My only complaint is that I wish there were more traditional Christmas songs on the album. Still worth the great price though!

Liona Boyd Xmas - Magical........2004-12-17
My brother gave this album (yes, ALBUM( to my parents one year, and I fell in love with her music. I bought the CD, and it kept me company on an 11 hour drive from Manhattamn to Erie, but I left it in the rental car and had no luck finding it anywhere until someone reco'd Amazon.
This is a great gift idea for people you haven't a clue what to buy for XMAS. It truly is a guft that keeps on giving
My No. 1 Christmas Album.......2002-11-24
Guitar for Christmas is a wonderful and charming piece of work. It's my all-time favourite Christmas album. I own a lot of Guitar Christmas music and a lot of instrumental ones and this one is by miles the best one i've got. The arrangements are fantastic. Highlights include: What Child Is This? Blessed Jesus, Christmas Overture (O Come All Ye Faithful Medley) and it contains the best version of The Little Drummer Boy I have ever heard. Away in a Manger and Silent Night are also very interesting, and very well played.
The Album has other instruments too. There are strings, flutes, oboes, a Trumpet and some minor percussions. Most of the songs are calm and relaxing, other songs are faster and almost dancable, like the fantastic Yuletide Garland (Holly and the Ivy Fantasy) and Parade of Toy Soldiers, both arraned by Eric Robertson. I recommend this Album to every one looking for good Christmas music. I give it five stars.
Exquisite!.......2002-10-29
An enchanting, gentle, charming collection of popular and classical holiday tunes. NOT to be confused with those bland, boring new-age guitarists. Ms. Boyd is an accomplished artist, joined here and there by a variety of other sympathetic instrumentalists. One of the very best holiday instrumental CDs.

From Solo Piano Publications.......2006-08-13
"Little Neighborhood" is one of pianist/composer Michael Allen Harrison's older recordings, but what a gem! Recorded for the benefit of The Robison Jewish Home in Portland, Oregon, the CD is comprised of Harrison's arrangements of traditional Jewish songs and several originals. Most of the pieces have minimal orchestrations accompanying Harrison's impeccable piano. Jewish music tends to have a haunting, melancholy quality that Harrison captures to full effect. Deeply emotional and soulful, this recording touches the heart and lifts the spirit. Some of the traditional songs that are included are "Sh'chuna K'tana," a lovely piece about the little neighborhood; "Ose Shalom," a gentle plea for peace in Israel and for all mankind; "Hi'ne Ma Tov," a lively and rhythmic toast to brotherhood and unity; "Maoz Tzur," the Jewish "Rock of Ages"; a gorgeous Wedding Medley"; and "Hatikvah," a deeply emotional song of the two thousand-year hope to be a free nation in Zion. Harrison's compositions include "Sivonne," a "welcome to the world" to a little angel; "Ilse'," written for a dear friend; and "Ema' sh'li," composed for the artist's mother. The music on this recording is both specific in its ethnicity and universal in its message. I can't imagine anyone not thoroughly enjoying this music. Highly recommended!
Beautiful piano rendition of Jewish Favorites.......1999-01-18
This CD was created as a fund raiser for the Portland, OR Robison Jewish Home. Michael Harrison is a competent composer and arranger. His rendition of Jewish favorites is easy listening for everyone. I found myself humming to songs I didn't even know.

A found object -- a once-in-a-lifetime gem........2006-12-23
I am a competent, if average, semi-professional musician who has practiced thousands of hours and played hundreds of live shows. I have done some cool things, but I will never make music as wonderful as this.
There are accomplished musicians, like Charlie Parker, Buddy Emmons, or Sonny Rollins, who provide windows to their souls by virtue of having practiced hundreds of thousands of hours; they can express their inner music effortlessly. There are others, like Thelonious Monk or Ornette Coleman, who arrive there with less technical proficiency, but nonetheless give us everything they have.
Barstow comes out of the latter camp, although that doesn't quite capture it either. While the treatments on these songs will make you laugh, it would be ignorant and obtuse to categorize this with Weird Al Yankovic or Comedy Central; nor is Barstow the 2nd coming of Christ, as some would have it.
He is, however, a singer with a unique approach, whose vocals, when combined with Larry Goldings' solid and dutiful accompaniment, result in something that is truly novel, wonderous, and significant in its way. Did you ever notice how Eddie Cochran sang a half-step flat at the end of the verses on "Nervous Breakdown," or how Joe Strummer often sang about 1/4-step flat? What makes Barstow's music interesting is something like this -- the tension between keys, as Barstow travels in and out of the home key of each song. On some songs, he starts about 1/2 step above the home key, coming back to flirt with it at the end of a phrase or chorus; on other songs, he'll start the song more or less on-key, but take off somewhere else, while the band chugs along like a reliable freight train. These superb results are in no small part due to pianist Goldings' inutive understanding about how to best showcase Barstow's singing (Goldings "discovered" Barstow). Comedian Allan Sherman once referred to the elaborate orchestrations around his own vocals as a "velvet pillow with an onion sitting in the middle" or something like that; Goldings does much the same here, setting off the tunes with elegant arrangements using the sounds of strings, a harp, a church organ, or even a banjo. Since the musical (and comedic) interest here derives from the contrast between Goldings' accompaniment and Barstow's atonality, I had to wonder what might happen if the accompanist used chord and key substitutions paralleling Barstow's harmonic adventures. That would make for an interesting second album!
However, intellectual descriptions like these don't really do the music justice, as Barstow brings a kind of natural enthusiasm to the whole process; he does not seem to be doing any of this consciously. Any trained singer could likely learn to sing a song a half-step out of pitch, but would come off as glib and facile while doing so. Most people singing with this sensibility perform only with reluctance and inhibition, having been told repeatedly throughout their lives what "bad" singers they are -- whereas Barstow effortlessly accepts himself while pursuing his obvious love for these songs. It's ends up as some weird combination of folk art and the avant garde --like a primitive painter who ends up working with the same problems in flattened abstract space as a Matisse or a DeKooning. I agree that Charles Ives would "get" this.
At least that's my take on it. If you're looking for that rare authentic and real thing that comes along only once in a great while, and you can handle the tension and "dissonance," this music is the discovery of a lifetime.
If you like Florence Foster Jenkins, Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, and Mrs. Miller -- you'll LOVE this!.......2005-12-26
I have just finished laughing until I couldn't get my breath and was seeing stars after listening to "A Bowtie Christmas".
Johnny "Bowtie" Barstow is nothing less than a latter-day Florence Foster Jenkins!
I'm a trained classical musician and I've sung Schoenberg, Webern, Ligeti and Penderecki in choirs -- but *nothing* was as difficult as when I tried learning "Do You Hear What I Hear" exactly as Mr. Barstow sings it! "The First Noel" is equally fine: be sure to catch the the little bit of falsetto just before the final line of the song!
The absolute show-stopper on this CD is his rendition of "The Girl from Ipanema". I don't think a trained musician could do what he does!
I wish Charles Ives had heard Johnny Barstow when Ives was composing his 114 Songs...

Product Description
This recording elevates the emotions within us and reconnects to the true inner values of living souls. Since excitement and challenge move the minds of modern man away from the solitude and security only love can best provide, do we find ourselves entangled when we lose this kind of love which elevates us into the heights of heaven. Love, alike faith, does move mountains, remaining the source of all life and allows us to reflect and improve our emotional state. This recording encompasses the everyday feelings of people and reminds us of some of the most wonderful tunes, touching on our modern time and also on the times which have passed us long ago. Love, longing and the feelings of separation right up to the moment of embrace, the return or even the loss of it, will never cease to corner our emotions, calm them or elevate them, depending on the sound of the music and the words delivered through it. In short, only the artists involved can best connect us! to the inner feelings we have when we fall in love or think of bygone days when love was kind to us. The sound tracks on Christmas Together return to traditional sounds, much more so appreciated when the voice of June Simon lifts the Ave Maria high up into the dome of any cathedral. HandelÂ’s work, his Largo, from his opera Xerxes, has the sound of intimate sanctity within its measures. Here the reverberation of a coupled tone, distant but attached to the uniqueness of June SimonÂ’s voice, melts into the feelings of this tune with deep emotions and appreciation of the composerÂ’s efforts, making it one of the most beloved sounds of anyone who enjoys harmony within music. The unique quality of WinstonÂ’s guitar brings true beauty to the season together with the magical piano of the French born pianist Pierre Grill, ending this beautiful CD quite appropriately with White Christmas.

Almost as good as listening in person.......2002-12-31
I used to listen/watch Watson and Edge as they performed on the streets of Boulder, and later in the mall when the city council became more outrageous in their control of the town. These guys were a joy to be around as they totally immersed themselves in their music. Watching Watson in his white tails and bare feet was often like watch dervishes spinning themselves into ecstasy. If you like violin and guitar, you need this album.
