The best of Candi Staton's cd is very, very good. I love listening to all the songs. My favorite is "Young hearts run free". Her other 2 hits "Victim" and "When you wake up tomorrow" are nice songs to dance to.

She's Not No J-Lo, Mary J. Blige or Janet Jackson!.......2006-02-18

These Girls cannot out do Candi Staton, She's the best, I was a child back in the 70's went Young Hearts,Run Free & Victim first came out. I have both of her old 45's Records. I just purchase The Best Of Candi Staton. I listened to samples off her greatest hits.It sounds pretty good. I can't wait to get my copy. Forget Jennifer Lopez because she cannot sings and dance, Mary J.Blige is pretty good, Janet Jackson is okay but she sounds like a winey cat sometimes.

Back in the day..........2005-06-18

When I was under age and sneaking into the gay bars of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, I heard "Young Hearts, Run Free" and "Victim" and fell in love with these songs. I never knew who the artist was until I found Candi Staton here on amazon. I bought this Warner Archives release and only listened to those two songs...over & over! Finally I listened to the rest of the cd. WOW! What a great find. I recommend it. Nice mix of old school funk, disco, and ballads.

I am a native of Newark, N.J. I remember Saturday evenings, as a child, sitting on the front porch of my house on the southside, listening to 92WKTU's Chep Pedibone, Frankie Knuckles or Live radio mixes from Club Zanzibar's very own Tony Humphries. They would play disco, house and club in such a way one can only make sure they had enough 90min blank tapes available for recording. Then, from a slight distance you can hear the intro to "Victim" being faded in. Enters Candi; the voice of passion, feeling. She carries a song with the vibe preacher giving a sermon about experiences in life and love. From Young Hearts Run Free to When You Wake Up Tomarrow Candi has been there did that. You do not want to miss this one...

To find these songs on one collection after all these years is amazing! When You Wake up Tomorrow ... in all of it's 7 &1/2 minute glory at that ... just pure heaven! Also just nearly as good ... Victim , with it's 8 minute anthem version ... also pure heaven!

Hers is a Godly Gift .......2007-05-11

The great female song-interpreters of the 1970s - like Candi Staton, Tracy Nelson, and Ann Peebles - tend to be overlooked in favour of their more famous female singer-songwriter counterparts. But their contribution is just as fine, especially when they choose their material wisely.

After such a long break in recording, you would have to have quite conservative expectations of any Candi Staton comeback. But you would be wrong. This one is as good as and better than her 1974 classic "Candi".

Candi's son, daughter and sister make their backing contributions and she herself chips in with four originals. There's not really a dud moment in Mark Nevers' (of Lambchop) scholarly production, but the Will Oldham penned title track is a knockout choice. A great talent fills up your heart, her godly gift retained, against all the betting odds.

A Stax Retro.......2006-08-24

Listening to this wonderful, joyous album really felt like a blast back to the early 1970's on Stax Records, with those great singers singing and the Memphis Horns playing. Remember those great albums by Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Albert Collins and Albert King? (Albert King's "I'll Play the Blues for You" on Stax--oh, yeah!!)

This album is exactly like that. Ammy notes a bookend album of Bettye Lavette's "I've Got My Own Hell to Raise." A great album: but that one evokes Tina Turner in her prime. This one is more like Mavis Staples.

All of the songs are unfamiliar to me by title, but they all sound familiar. One of them (track #7) has licks that sound an awful lot like Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." I almost downgraded the rating to 4 stars on account of that.

But I couldn't do that, ultimately. All of these songs are tight and swinging, and Ms. Staton sounds every bit the confident soul diva that Gladys Knight and Mavis Staples were in their primes. Most importantly, this album had me smiling and clapping throughout. 4-star albums don't do that to me. 5-star albums do. RC

Wow! They don't make records like this anymore!.......2006-08-21

Mind you, this is the best blues/soul record since the untimely passing of Luther Allison, and everything about it speaks of a quality that you don't find in the aesthetics of many others making records these days. For one thing, the rootsy feel of the band harkens back to Muscle Shoals, to Booker T, to Otis Redding. These are deeply, deeply soulful players and singers who are committed to themusic. And with Commitment, all the rules change.
Staton has a voice so authentic that it makes all the caterwauling histrionics you haer from all the ballyhoo-ed divas seem so amateurish. In short, she is the genuine article. I can't think of another singer who commands such authority in her voice in the blues/soul/r n b world as Staton. And as chief architect and writer of most of the material herein, she has set herself apart from everyone else in this branch of music: this is as fine as it gets, the work of a consummate professional.
So why not 5 stars? Well, there is a monotony to the themes of the songs. They all deal with the devastation she feels from a failed marriage. And while I know that the pain is real, by the seventh track I found myself correctly guessing the lyrics and the rhythm patterns. A bit of variety in subject matter would have elevated this to possibly the best blues vocal record ever.
That's quibbling, and I know it. Her pain is palpable and real, and I mean no disservice to her emotions. But still, she must think about something else from time to time....
Regardless, while you may not listen all the way through every time, you will come back to this CD many, many times throughout the rest of your life. Superb!

TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO SOUL FOR MS. STATON!.......2006-07-20

Well what can I say about Candi Staton's new album HIS HANDS?! It never ceases to amaze me that when I listen to a Candi Staton album, she always has a way of hitting the head of the nail on issues that affect everyday people.

I was thrilled to find out that she was recording an album that would resurrect the sound she made famous when she was with FAME records in the late 60s and early 70s. When I first listened to this album, immediately I could understand the emotions and heartache that must have inspired Ms. Staton to sing with such conviction! My favorite song has to be "When Will I?" and it's such an inspiring song. My favorite line is "I see a lonely sparrow fly, and I wonder, when will I?"......reminiscent of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." The title track is shivering with vocals that hits the core of the human condition. Overall what an awesome album! It is also nice to note that Candi is receiving rave reviews, which she greatly deserves! I have been a fan for many years now and I hope that the rest of the world will come to realize what a great singer she is!

Is this a different version?.......2005-04-09

I ordered the Outside In (Uk Import) from Amazon and just received an email saying that they are unable to get it from any of their suppliers. I have a dance version of "You Got The Love" on a Club Classics CD that I have but if I remember correctly the Sex & The City version was a slower version? I'm looking everywhere for this album and wonder if I should even bother or is the version I already have the same one that's on the Outside In album (it's the Source mix version)? Does anyone know?

It's quite odd that Amazon has no stock on this item as of this writing, since it is IN PRINT and readily available on ZYX label's web site (Amazon edited the link out of my review; do a web search instead). But the Now Voyager mix of "You Got the Love" (the one used on "Sex and the City") is available in all its glory on Candi Staton's "Outside In" album (UK Import Version), which is available here at Amazon for a decent price -- and it's a terrific album with a number of other great dance tracks. Beware, the Japanese import of "Outside In" does NOT have "You Got The Love," so go for the UK version on the React label.

This is, by far, the best Candi Staton CD out. "I'm Just a Prisoner" stops you dead in your tracks (or makes you want to dance). Good luck finding another CD with that song along with several other of her greatest works!

What a voice!.......2006-04-18

What a woman with a razor sharp voice. Listen to the music with heart because Candi Staton puts her heart & soul into every song on this album. I have never heard an album were every song is just as good as the last one. Listen to track #9 I played it over, over, and over again. When I listen to Candi Staton I clear my mind and just listen to her pipes.

Blessed mix of new and old, known and unknown. I feel like a kid with a new Erector set full of familiar parts-soulful gospel lead vocals, charted horns sweeping in like precision cavalry, choreographed back-up singers in perfect step, Memphis players who have played together so long they work inside each others' hooks (note, however, that this is FAME in Muscle Shoals, but Stax), and all manner of pop accessories-that have been disassembled from old classics-Etta, Irma, Otis, James Carr, ...-and reassembled in fresh forms that bring late Southern soul (c. 1970) back to life in high-quality performances that I have never heard before. Old is new and all is better for it! Stand-out: tr 3-I'd rather be an old man's sweetheart (clear, unexpected ode to a December-May pairing). [74:18]

Candi's classic years.......2006-01-27

Candi Staton is perhaps best known today for a couple of big disco tunes, Young Hearts Run Free and You Got The Love, but before those she had enjoyed a big run of southern soul hits, all recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals AL with producer Rick Hall. They have the classic gritty Muscle Shoals sound with big, fat lithe horns and female choruses, and dissect the seamier side of life with titles like I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart (Than A Young Man's Fool), Mr And Mrs Untrue and Another Man's Woman, Another Woman's Man.
Candi had grown up singing, first in the church choir as a schoolgirl, and in gospel groups from the age of eight onwards, later touring with Aretha, Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and others, and had no difficulty whatsoever in switching to the rhythm and blues and country soul she recorded for Fame. Her naturally sweet voice was deliberately given a hoarser edge by Rick Hall through over singing to get the soulful effect he desired. Country music was as big in Alabama as soul so it was unsurprising that Candi should have hits with her heartfult interpretations of Stand By Your Man and In The Ghetto.
This collection gathers most of the best of the classic recordings she made with the Muscle Shoals crew between 1969 and 1973, and which had been overlooked for far too long. They are not presented in chronological order and the notes are very hazy as to what was recorded when, and which of them were singles and which were album cuts. Eight A-sides and nine B-sides are actually included, with all but one A-side (Love Chain, from 1973) and three B-sides (tracks 13, 19 and 26) also appearing on her first three albums.
In fact, the first two albums are present in full. I'm Just A Prisoner (1969) can be recreated by programming tracks 5, 3, 15, 2, 9, 10, 6, 1, 7 and 22, while Stand By Your Man (1971) comprised tracks 12, 17, 1 (again), 16, 14, 8, 9, 18, 20 and 23. Her third album, Candi Staton (1972) is represented by tracks 21, 4, 15 and 25.

SOUTHERN SOUL SUNG WITH CONVICTION.......2005-12-03

Candi Staton is my favorite soul singer of all time! During the time that Candi was with FAME Records, she recorded three albums (I'M JUST A PRISONER, STAND BY YOUR MAN, and CANDI STATON) and managed to have a Top 40 Pop hit (#24) with her soulful interpretation of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" in 1971. Other hits included the Top Ten R&B hit "I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart (Than A Young Man's Fool)", "He Called Me Baby", another soulful interpretation of Elvis Presley's "In The Ghetto" (which she received a Grammy nomination and even got a congratulatory note from the King of Rock himself!)

This collection of Candi's FAME material showcases southern soul at its best. All of these songs were superbly accompanied by astounding musicianship and were sung with strong conviction by Candi. Her voice is real and you can hear in each song some kind of experience that she must have been going through at the time in order for her to make the song come alive. To my amazement, this collection is missing the wonderful "Do It in the Name of Love" which was a Top 20 R&B hit in 1973.

However, these songs are masterpieces of the late 60s/early 70s southern soul era. Anyone who loves southern soul, will definitely enjoy this collection of Ms. Staton's FAME material. Personally, I enjoy her Warner Bros. material more, because I like urban soul/quiet storm grooves, but her earlier work is what she is critically known for. Overall, this album deserves an excellent rating and if I could, I would give it 100 stars.

Awesomely, Totally Soul!.......2003-08-13

Glad that am finally re-united with Candi... I searched and searched for Candi within Zambia, in South Africa, Germany - everywhere I went it was always "no longer available." Then a kind friend in the US agreed to purchase it for me off Amazon - and now my juices are running amok! Am listening to "Honest I Do" right now and, man, it turns me inside out! If you let the golden silky soul voice of Candi wash over you, you will experience a thorough re-baptism of what it used to be back then! I have missed and thirsted for this music for some twenty years, and now am totally quenched, it's a top thrill! Quite a fine balance between the mid-tempo dance tunes (touting the two giants Young Hearts and Victim) and the slower, easier cascades like Will I Ever Get Over It and Destiny.

If you love soul, and above all if you ever loved Candi, waste no more time - go for it!!

An Awesome Soul Singer!.......2003-02-06

Wow! That is all I have to say about Candi Staton. When I purchased this album, I was already familiar with the classic song, "Young Hearts Run Free". Listening to these two albums in their entirety has given me the true meaning of what urban soul/quiet storm sounded like back in the day of the mid 70s to the mid 80s. This fine singer showcases fine vocals on such songs as "Living For You", "Yesterday Evening", "What A Feeling", and the amazing, "Precious Lord". Now I am wondering, why wasn't she as big as other soul divas such as Diana Ross, Donna Summer, or Gloria Gaynor? Another thing to point out.....why didn't Warner Bros. (the original label) reissue these two fine albums any sooner.

To any lover of soul music, you have got to add this combination of classic albums to your collection! Also check out Ms. Staton's new gospel album, PROVERBS 31 WOMAN, which is a good collection of gospel tunes.

FINALLY.......CANDI STATON ALBUMS REISSUED!!.......2003-01-07

Finally, two of Candi Staton's Warner Bros. albums have been reissued! This is a real treat for all Candi Staton fans. These albums have been out of print for a long time and have been long overdue for a reissue. It kind of disappoints me that Warner Bros. did not do the reissue. Thanks to Spy Records, a lot of Candi Staton fans can enjoy listening to YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE and HOUSE OF LOVE. The sound of these two albums is incredibly clear and crisp. I have both of these albums on vinyl and this reissue certainly does the quality of these two albums justice! My favorite songs have to be "Living For You", "Yesterday Evening", "I Wonder Will I Ever Get Over It", and "What A Feeling". The reissue also includes liner notes by David Nathan, which gives a closer insight on the two albums and even includes an interview with Ms. Staton herself.

BOTTOM LINE...........this album is worth the praise of fellow soul divas such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, etc. Purchase this album and you will see why Candi Staton is called the Sweetheart of Soul.

Simply the best Granados piano recording we have.......2000-09-17

I encountered this recording, that dates from the early sixties, for the first time on a Musical Heritage Society double LP that one commentator had remarked "sounded like Hispavox recorded it off a public address system". Even so, these wonderful recordings communicated the essence of Granados' inspiration in perfumed and ecstatic performance by Ms. De Larrocha. Now we have this excellent CD transfer that puts everything right sonically and lets us enjoy the music undistracted. Since this recording was not the artist's last word on the subject, why not buy her later performance? The reason is that this is the ne plus ultra of Granados recordings- the summit of achievement that will become one of your all-time favorite piano records.

Gorgeously played, sumptuously written. Nobody can play this music like Alicia de Larrocha. Recording noise notwithstanding, it's still fabulous and I'm buying my second copy.

Finally Reissued on CD!.......2005-12-03

Candi Staton is one of those singers that can easily transcend different musical styles, whether it be gospel, southern soul, disco, quiet storm, or urban soul. This collection brings fans a long awaited arrival of her two Warner Bros. albums (CANDI-1974 and MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS-1977) on CD with 24-bit remastering that just sounds amazing.

The first album (CANDI) was released in 1974 and was her first album under Warner Bros. records. With CANDI, Ms. Staton was able to have a Top Ten R&B hit (#6) with "As Long As He Take Care of Home" and it included fine songs that were recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama. However, it was not a huge success and Candi decided to change producers, because she felt that it would be best to move with someone who was producing more in the disco/urban soul area. With that in mind, she recorded her next album (YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE -1976) with David Crawford. YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE also brought Candi a new change, recording in Los Angeles, California. With new musical styles chosen, Candi finally hit the top of the charts, with the title track reaching #1 on the R&B charts and making it to #20 on the Pop Charts.

The following year 1977, Candi recorded MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS with producer Bob Monaco (who was well known for his work with Rufus). In MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS, the songs had a more pop/rock feel to it and provided Candi with a slightly different sound. However it was not as big of a hit as YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE. But my favorite songs on MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS are "You Are", "When You Want Love", her soulful interpretations of the Doobie Brothers' hit "Listen To The Music" and the Bee Gees' "Nights On Broadway", and the very feel good instrumental "Cotton Candi". The latter is a wonderful instrumental that is very reminiscent of the mid 70s and reminds of what it must have been like to hear something like that in a department store. Overall both albums are wonderful and showcases Candi in two different styles of music.

Now all we need to make Candi's Warner Bros. years complete are CHANCE (1979) and CANDI STATON (1980). With CHANCE, Candi went for the big disco sound and with her self-titled album we get a wonderful sound of urban soul with quiet storm thrown in. My favorite Candi Staton album while she was at Warner Bros. is CANDI STATON. So hopefully David Nathan will release those two fine albums on CD as well!! That will make the collection complete!!!

candi is back and better than ever.......1999-12-28

recently in baltimore,maryland i had the oppertunity to meet a music legend..miss candi staton. annd even though i was only a child when i was first introduced to her music ,she still sounds as good as she did in the 70's. hearing her sweet voice ring throuhout the crowd of listeners at the meyerhoff symphony hall i realized that this is a voice that deserves a closer look ,or better yet a closer listen. i went out and purchased the cd and i really enjoyed it that sweet voice is still in top form and the music, although gospel and not disco , proves not only is she versitile , but she is going to be a welcome voice for the new mellennium
