Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.

The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.

These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.

Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.

The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:

1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.

2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.

3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.

Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

5 out of 5 stars Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26

We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24

My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18

I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28

If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19

I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A musical treat.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2007-01-10

If you're a fan of oldies from the 60's and 70's, you'll love listening to Ronnie Dyson for the first time or to reminisce. Ronnie's voice and music set you back to a time of love. His voice is a classic. I knew a few of the songs from growing up with soul music. But, this CD gave me a bigger look and feel for Mr. Dyson and his style. This CD is a must for the music lover.

3 out of 5 stars RONNIE DYSON.......2006-07-13

The cd was in "perfect" condition but I wasn't overwhelmed by some the music. I guess, I expected too much.

5 out of 5 stars When you get right down to it.......2005-04-24

Worth buying for this song alone - "When you get right down to it" is the quintissential classic from probably the most melodic soulman in history. His voice is liquid gold. Like Bruch with his unsurpassed violin concerto, Dyson has in this song a classic which touches the heart and soul of everyone who listens to it.

4 out of 5 stars The best from a singer who deserved better........2004-03-02

Ronnie Dyson never attained the level of superstardom an artist of his caliber deserved but this excellent collection does his talent justice. One can only imagine the heights he could have reached had he been properly marketed and promoted.

5 out of 5 stars Little boy can sing!!.......2003-01-10

This little Gary Coleman looking thing can sing. Powerful voice! Great.

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Above the rest of the pack.......2004-03-02

Girl-group compilations abound in the CD reissue marketplace but often recycle the same ol' titles. How many times can you buy the Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back"? Here, Varese Vintage has gathered up a generous 25-track sampler of girl and girl-group, mostly pre-British invasion tunes representing both the "oh-no-not-again" and the rare. Among the girl-group standards here are the Murmaids' syrupy "Popsicles and Icicles", the Paris Sisters' Spectorian "I Love How You Love Me" and one of the most ubiquitously compiled tunes, the Chiffons' "He's So Fine". More interestingly though, the apprearance of significantly charting but seldom-found tracks such as the Sapphires' "Who Do You Love", Brenda and the Tabulations' "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue" and Linda Scott's "I've Told Every Little Star" notch up the interest level for this piece. Going even further and really intriguing the genre's collectors are real rarities in the form of Candy and the Kisses' "The 81" (a Martha and the Vandellas sound-alike out of Philadelphia), Diane Maxwell's "Jimmy Kiss And Run" and Felice Taylor's "It May Be Winter Outside...". Also to the credit of the compilers here is the choice of the Shirelles' (an almost mandatory inclusion in any girl-group compilation) "Mama Said" over the usual "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and the Angels' "Til" instead of their anthem, "My Boyfriend's Back". And going one step further, while the Chiffons' "He's So Fine" appears in a collection for the umpteenth time, here you get the extraordinarily rare binaural stereo version. And speaking of sound, the quality here is top-notch with most tracks in stereo (1-4,7-12,15,19,20,23-25), tracks 9 and 19 having been newly remixed from the session masters. Rounding out the package is an eight-page liner notes booklet with backround and some illustrations for the included tracks and artists. All together, a top-notch piece way above the crowd of girl group compilations.

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Rich cross-section of '60s girl sounds.......2003-08-18

With so many girl group and girl singer anthologies and reissues on the market, it's hard to know where to start one's collection. Varese's generous 25-track collection provides a valuable tutorial, with a song selection that includes both iconic hits and lesser-known regional singles, it cuts a wide swath through girl groups (e.g., Shirelles, Chiffons, Dixie Cups, Murmaids, Paris Sisters, Shangri-Las), pop songbirds (e.g., Linda Scott, Marcie Blane, Kathy Young), and soul and R&B singers (e.g., Betty Everett, Claudine Clark, Barbara Lewis, Barbara George, Barbara Mason, Barbara Lynn).

Nearly all of these tracks started life on indie labels, some well known (Red Bird, Sceptor, Wand, Laurie), and some hopelessly obscure (Tuff, Seville, A.F.O., Arctic). They were produced and hustled to radio in a time when regional hits on indie labels could still break out nationally. Then again, some of these gems remained regional favorites; the Philly soul favorite "The 81" only touched #51, failing to ignite a nationwide dance craze, and Yvonne Carroll's sophisticated ballad "Laugh or Cry" was well known in Pittsburgh, but never cracked the national charts. And though Motown's Detroit sounds are missing, Felice Taylor sounds remarkably like Diana Ross on the Barry White produced "It May Be Winter Outside (But in My Heart It's Spring)."

In addition to the girls in the studio, the talent behind the glass is equally impressive. Songwriters anthologized here include Kenny Gamble (who would later co-develop the famed 1970s Philly Sound with Leon Huff), David Gates (whose "Popsicles and Icicles" is even stickier than his later work with Bread), and Brill Building stalwarts Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, Gerry Goffin & Carole King, and Barry Mann. Producers heard here include Kim Fowley (who would develop a rather different girl-sound with The Runaways in the late 70s), Phil Spector, Van McCoy and Shadow Morton, along with lesser-known names whose talent is laid down in these grooves.

Varese's gathered together an impressive number of stereo masters (1-3, 7-11, 15, 19-20, 23-25, possibly 4 and 12), and several of these tracks (6, 9, 13, 19, 21) are reasonably rare in CD circles, making this a good catch for both collectors and neophytes.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's a measure of Roy Orbison's classics that even some of the uptempo songs that break up the dominant balladic mood of this 20-song collection are themselves fairly melancholic. Rarely does Orbison allow himself the outright celebration of something like "Mean Woman Blues," more often going for the shades of gray that slip into "Blue Angel" and "Leah." Few could do what he achieves on these singles, and not just because few are gifted with such a voice. The biggest achievement of all may be Orbison's ability to make a devastated cry like "Only the Lonely" sound somehow peaceful. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Great sounds from the Best.......2007-07-25

This CD brought back lots of good memories. Roy Orbison was one of the Greats, Saw him in person years ago and will never forget the great voice he had. I recommend buying this CD

5 out of 5 stars Best 1 disc Orbison collection.......2007-05-27

This is the best single disc collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits. It was originally released on 2 LPs in the early 80's. One thing I've always wondered about is that this 20 track CD has always been also available as 2 separate volumes with 10 tracks each & having the same cover artwork (you'd have to be careful to read the list of tracks on the back) Why?? If someone is an Orbison fan why would they want one volume & not the other? Why not just have all 20 tracks on one CD, as it is done here? Also, one reviewer asks why "You Got It" isn't here, well it's because that song wasn't even recorded yet when this album was released, and that song was on Virgin Records, not Monument.

5 out of 5 stars It is Roy Orbison.......2007-03-29

What more can be said? Roy Orbison has a quality of voice that can't be duplicated. One of the few really original and great voices.

4 out of 5 stars Sound is good.......2007-03-21

I would like to suggest, contrary to the review of Aug 2006, that the sound on this nice collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits, is actually quite good.

With the puzzling exception of the song LOVE HURTS, which seems to have been mastered from a very muffled tape.

This Sony disk was issued in 1989, and has not been re-mastered since then, so you're getting a relatively unfutzed edition for a nominal price.

5 out of 5 stars All time greatest Hits of Roy Orbison.......2007-01-10

Love this CD. Just what I ezpected and wanted. Would recommend it to my friends.

    5 out of 5 stars Olympics All-Time Greatest Hits.......2004-02-28

Twenty-three Olympics recordings, plus two by other artists. I may not be an impartial judge of this CD, because the Olympics may be my all-time favorite vocal group. From 1960-1963 there was no group that could match the chilling excitement of the Olympics' R&B-rock recordings. Of the 14 songs they had on Billboard's top 100, this CD has 9, with The Bounce being the biggest hit lacking on the CD. I played original 45 singles of Big Boy Pete, Shimmy Like Kate, and Dance By the Light of the Moon (plus their flip sides) along with the CD, and the CD has all exact reproductions of the originals, same length, same mix, exact, complete with Arvee label's hits' missing most of the "S", "C" and "T" sounds. The liner notes are excellent, including notes on audio quality, and that to preserve the original sound, only two of the songs are presented in stereo. "Western Movies" (the only song on the CD from the Demon label) has the "S" etc. sounds, but interestingly it sounds like the CD was made from vinyl as you hear a bit of popping at the start. All-in-all, the producers of this CD (and, of course, the Olympics, too) deserve a lot of tribute, undoubtedly more than they get.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Compilation of the Hard To Find.......2003-10-14

The Olympics, an L.A. based group fashioned after the Coasters, had a couple of national and quite a few regional hits on several small labels. Titles like Good Lovin' and Big Boy Pete were either directly covered by or inspired hits recorded later by others. I wore out my vinyl versions of their albums before the 60's ended. As you rarely hear their music played, this well remastered collection was a welcomed fine. A bonus are extensive and well researched liner notes. I was disappointed that the extended album version of Hully Gully (one of their bigger hits) was not selected along with their outstanding rendition of What'd I Say (one of the best recordings - except for Ray Charles original - of this classic). Why El Pizza (not an Olympics record) was included I have not a clue - but I had forgotten this great send up of El Paso and it was fun hearing it again. Alternate versions and unreleased material will add appeal to any die hard fans, but there is plenty here to interest anyone who loves classic R&B.

1 out of 5 stars It must Be Good.......2000-12-21

It was sampled in Fatboy Slims "Soul Surfing" which was in his top selling album "Youve Come Along Way Baby". Lets face it we all new Norman Cook wasn't the one playing the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on the queso.......2005-08-30

You definitely have to be of a particular mind set to appreciate the dulcet tones of Chris Montez. Yes, he carried the gauntlet (or is that margarita glass) passed to him by Ritchie Valens. Yes, "Let's Dance" was on the Animal House soundtrack, which I used to hear at frat parties in the mid 80's. Yes, John Lennon got mad at him for some reason and dumped a beer on his head. Yes, Deke Dickerson's old surf band Untamed Youth did a cover of Chris' "Some Kinda Fun." Is it so wrong for me to drive around Nashville in a 1986 Oldsmobile with my windows down, singing at the top of my lungs along with "Time After Time?" Is it wrong for me to remember a particularly "special" moment associated with Chris' version of "There'll Never Be Another You?" Listening to the A&M recordings, you almost feel like you're right there at the party at some swanky tiki looking club, clapping along and pounding down tequila. Chris Montez helped to make lounge music cool. If only someday, I can see him perform in Vegas, I will be a happy chiquita.

5 out of 5 stars Very original sound!.......2003-04-05

Ok, first, I have to say, this man is my Uncle (I know him as "Uncle Zeke" for Ezekiel). So, anything I say is biased. But here goes anyway... Uncle Zeke has a very original voice and songs like "Call Me", "The More I See You", and "I Ran" are simply fantastic. No, he's nothing like Ritchie Valens and I don't think he ever wanted to be. He was a solo artist from the 60's who happened to be hispanic - so everyone drew up comparisons. But listen to his music. A hint of the Beach Boys in the early years and something sounding completely original in the latter part of his career. Nothing like Valens. And he was very original. You should buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Some Kinda Fun!.......2000-11-06

This was a great overview of Chris Montez's career."Let's Dance" is one of the greatest rock'n roll songs ever recorded. To be honest,I preferred Chris's early rockin' stuff more than his later jazzy pop period.Don't get me wrong,I love "Call Me"and "The More I See You",but 10 songs in a row in the same style got a little repetitious. All in all, though,a great tribute to a guy who carried on the Ritchie Valens tradition of Rockin' good songs!

5 out of 5 stars Nice representation of Chris Montez' career.......2000-05-04

This compilation of the two phases of Chris Montez' career was a welcome find, since no domestic CD existed and his LPs have been out of print for years. The Monogram cuts (1962-1964) showcase his phase as a protege of Richie Valens or aspiring Latin rocker. I've always enjoyed the organ part on "Let's Dance," which compensates for a relatively weak vocal. The A&M phase (1965-1968) is well represented, although there was ample space on the disc for more songs. The party atmosphere of these recordings, plus the instrumental work of Julius Wechter and Pete Jolly, compliment Montez' vocal style well, resulting in a satisfying and upbeat effect. What makes this package really special is the thorough and well organized biographical and recording history notes. This information is valuable because the LPs lacked complete credits. What we really need now are reissues of Chris' A&M albums THE MORE I SEE YOU-CALL ME, TIME AFTER TIME, FOOLIN' AROUND, WATCH WHAT HAPPENS and CARTAS DE AMOR. All are late 60s except the latter, sung in Spanish and issued in 1983 on A&M Discos (Mexico).
