Top of the line - incredible!.......2007-05-13
If I could give this 100 stars I would do it. Since my trip to Russia in 2006 I "discovered" Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and have since purchased much of his music on CDs and DVDs. All tracks on this particular CD are incredibly beautiful - beyond imagination. Mr. Hvorostovsky was rightfully chosen the "Best Singer of the World" when he was a young man. His lush, full baratone voice is, as the young generation says, "to die for". He has an impressive range, and one can tell he feels music deeply by the nuances in his singing. This CD is one of my favorites of his singing.
Long-awaited follow-up to "Dark Eyes".......2003-01-04
Ever since "Dark Eyes", one of the first albums of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, came out, I've been wishing for the baritone to record more Russian romances. Looks like Delos is more committed to preserving this magnificent voice on record more than Philips did. After all, "Dark Eyes" had a lot of orchestral music, though wonderfully performed by Ossipov orchestra, it effectively reduced the sang material by some about 15 minutes or so. This is certainly not the case here. Well oven an hour of excellent singing is recorded (close-miked) with no interruptions. The songs themselves are the ones most often performed as encored by Russian singers. While baritones or basses have the strongest claim to them, most likely stemming from a long Russian tradidion of low male voice solo, tenors and even mezzo-sopranos have performed some of those to great acclaim.
The absolute hardest thing about performing these songs is not to make them sound sappy, vulgar, or over-done. Of all Russian singers who dealt with this material, I most often think of bass Boris Shtokolov, who sang them with utmost care. Dmitri does just that here. His care for the texts is what strikes me first while listening to "I Met You", a reflective serenade to love long lost. While all songs are spectacularly presented, I would like to mention "Misty Morning" and "I loved you". Like the title song, they are both filled with gentle melancholy, and sang with great tenderness and feeling. Some high-energy items, such as "Troika" seem just a little out of place, but the voice is a sheer pleasure to listen to. In "Oh, Could I in Song Tell My Sorrow", there's a strange change from traditional "your heart would break" to "my heart would break". I am not sure as to why this was done, particularly since the Cyrillic texts are absent.
In liner notes, Hvorostovsky explains the dedication of this album to his father, a chemical engineer, who managed to convey his love for the classical music and Russian romances to his son. I think all fathers need to learn from this man. Wondrous results stem from right upbringing!
The only minor quibble I have is the cover picture. It seems like the producers wanted to target exclusively the female part of the audience by using lots of shades of red color and lots of subdued candlelight. Well, I am sure there are lots of Dmitri's fans among men, particularly those of us who study voice, so I wish Delos would not make the cover so extravagant.
The engineering of this album, though, is very appropriate. The voice is placed well above orchestra (conducted with perfection by Constantine Orbelian) and each word is clearly heard. Together with Verdi Arias recording this shows that Delos engineers are fully capable of capturing the voice of this size and beauty well on record, something I doubted when listening to an otherwise lovely album of Neapolitan Songs.
I am sure non-Russian speakers will enjoy this CD just as much as Russians. After all, we all feel the same, and Dmitri's exceptional talent just makes it easier to communicate across cultural barriers.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL ALBUM FROM DMITRI.......2002-10-11
Once again, Dmitri Hvorostovsky has done another beautiful album. I'm completely thrilled with his last three releases on the Delos lable--the Verdi Album, the Passione di Napoli album and this new Russian love song album. As I have previously indicated on my review of his Passione di Napoli album, I've been a fan of his since his very beginnings in opera, and I do feel that he is truly in his vocal prime.
This album is for the "romantic at heart". The songs are beautiful as is the singing. All I can say of this endeavor is Bravo!!
I'm truly grateful that Hvorostovky's recording career was extended by the Delos lable!!
Dmitri at his best.......2002-10-09
What a treat this CD is. I've been waiting years for the great Hvorostovsky to record another album of Russian folk music, and this is arguably his best collection of that genre to date. Recorded in August, 2001, Hvorostovsky has never sounded better, and the sound quality admirably complements his rich, velvety baritone. Unlike his earlier collection of Neapolitan songs for the same label (DELOS), the recording balance between singer and orchestra will please everyone this time. Furthermore, the CD benefits from stylishly idiomatic arrangements, some fine conducting from Constantine Orbelian, and the sympathetic support of both the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Russian folk music performers, the Style of Five.
The 19 songs on the CD are described as "Old Russian Romances", or in professional music terminology as "Russian Domestic (Household) Romances". These are passionate songs of love, "often against the background of vast, empty Russian landscapes with long roads under foggy, gray skies", as the liner notes tell us. Hvorostovsky's dark, expressive baritone is ideally suited to such music, and Dmitri aficionados will no doubt recognise two songs from his earlier CDs of this genre, the haunting title track and the wistful "O, If Only I Could Express In Sounds". The latter was featured on his best-selling 1991 "Russian Romances" CD for Philips, but here - if anything - his singing is even more poetic than in earlier days. Comparing the two versions, one is immediately aware of how much freer Hvorostovsky's top notes are on the latest CD, with his upper register showing none of the slightly constricted quality that occasionally marred the earlier CD. This is the voice of a mature artist, and it is rare indeed to hear such committed singing from the soul.
As if the above wasn't enough, the CD comes with translations, generous liner notes, and an alluring cover photo of the handsome Siberian.
Hvorostovsky in his Milieu.......2002-08-31
This is Hvorostovsky at his finest. His magnificent rich creamy baritone is not taxed. He makes you sigh at beauty of his high
mezzo-voce notes, held endlessly, and trailing off to nothingness. The songs themselves are lovely-sad ballads of lost love for the most part, with a few catchy little ditties thrown in for a change of pace.
As crossover discs go, this one is one of the best. A fabulous singer at his prime, singing the songs of his childhood memories.
Bravo Hvorostovsky!

Vanessa Williams Beautiful Christmas........2005-12-24
This happens to be the kind of an album you want to get cozy in well candle-lit bedroom on Christmas Eve. Vanessa's first Christmas Album(Which is also known as The 20th Century Christmas Collection) has the best Christmas music worth listening to. The Best time to listen is late at night. Her voice is very sexy and seductive and my personal favorite tracks on this album are 1,4,8,9, & 12. Track 9 & 11 were previously recorded on other albums. Track 9 was Recorded for "A Special Olympics Christmas 2"; and Track 11 was used in David Foster's Christmas Album. "Star Bright" remains one the best Christmas Albums that will eventually stand through the test of time.
Awesome Christmas Love Music.......2005-12-16
I love this CD and the nuances of the production are so multi-faceted as to make this music more and more a part of my Christmases each and every year. It is the perfect music to while away a snowy evening relaxing around the fireplace with a loved one.
Just what one expects.......2004-12-20
This is beautiful music, beautifully executed and arranged, just what one expects from Vanessa Williams.
'Said the Night Wind to the Little Lamb'.......2004-10-25
'Do you hear what I hear?'
Star Bright is another one of my favorite Christmas albums. All the songs are good, beautifully arranged. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" still moves me to tears. Recommended!!!

G.R.I.T.@home.......2005-11-05
Scott Krippayne is one of the BEST songwriters in the business! He is equally as good a singer. All of his songs are so thought provoking. He does not get near enough credit for his talent. He has written songs for Point of Grace, Avalon, and even John Tesh! This album is one of my favorites. I have to sing "I Wanna Sing" at the top of my lungs everytime I hear it. "Cross of Christ" is so wonderful...it is another sing-out-loud song. The Coffee song is very funny and true! If you buy this CD you will agree with me and understand how talented this guy really is!!
Soulful CD.......2005-03-06
Scott Krippayne I first heard on the radio singing a live version of a song on this album called the "Coffee Song." It's a hysterical song that all coffee lovers would get a kick out of, and at that point I had no idea he was a Christian artist. Anyhow, I wanted his cd based on that song just because it was funny, and when I listened to his other songs, I was dually impressed. He has a really pretty voice (not the most imaginative descriptive word but accurate) and he uses a lot of piano in his music. His songs are a mix of fast and slow, and it makes for a great album. I highly recommend it!

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12
Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.
This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.
If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.
Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30
A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!
Just lovely!.......2003-05-25
This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.
Amazing.......2001-08-30
I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!
Order this CD with overnight shipping!!!
The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23
One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

Wonderful recording.......2004-11-18
This might be my favorite holiday album. It's one of the first I pull out in November and doesn't get put away until February.
Bright and sparkling!.......2002-11-29
A perfect way to celebrate the Christmas spirit any time of year with some truly "old" favorites, performed with spirit and heart by the Baltimore Consort. Period selections imbued here with the consort's singular sound and creative improvisations include "Ding Dong Merrily on High", "The Old Year Now Away is Fled", "The Cherry Tree Carol", "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day", "Es ist ein Ros", "In Dulci Jubilo", and many more that may charm you for the first time. The Baltimore Consort is: Mary Anne Ballard, viols and rebec; Mark Cudek, cittern, guitar, viols and bandora; Custer LaRue, soprano soloist; Larry Lipkis, viol, recorder and gemshorn; Ronn McFarlane, lutes; and Chris Norman, wooden flutes and pennywhistle; with Webb Wiggins on organ.
why to get this disc (in rhyme).......2001-11-24
'Twas the day after Thanksgiving, and all through the house, Christmas spirit was stirring and starting to rouse feelings of joy and expectation in the hearts of the people who were there. Beautiful music and Custer LaRue's singing filled the air.
Wonderful songs, written by people long dead, caused pictures to form and stories to dance through each listening head. Stories of a virgin bearing a child, stories of the little Savior's entrance into this world...meek and mild.
Each song is sung with such haunting beauty and care. The Consort's playing could not be more wonderfully fair. Each song is a masterpiece--"The Cherry Tree Carol," "In dulci jubilo," and "Quem pastores laudavere." Each song's focus is on the true meaning of Christmas--no appearance made by St. Nick--but with singing like this, in your head they are sure to stick.
More beautifully than snowflakes this music drifts down. In sheer loveliness, "Christmas Is My Name" deserves the crown. Oh but each tune is strong--like "Ding Dong Merrily" and "The Wren Song." Most come in at under three minutes each, none is overlong. Each is stunning...how can the listener go wrong? How they twinkle...they are most merry. One even makes mention of Cherries.
(...)
I highly recommend this disc.
A Christmas Favorite.......2000-12-09
Had enough of animated snowmen and over-sweetened carol arrangements? Here's a hugely enjoyable recording of songs and dances done with flair by the Baltimore Consort. There are a few familiar tunes, such as the lilting arrangement of "Ding, Dong Merrily On High" and a beautiful solo flute version of "Lo, How a Rose 'Er Blooming." But most the songs are off the beaten track, and are therefore fresh and new despite their antiquity. Custer LaRue brings feeling and energy into the songs. This has become the most played Christmas CD in our household.
Excellent performances and unique music.......1999-12-13
This is my favorite Christmas CD, and it is very different from everything else we hear this time of year.

Album Description
An American Christmas classic, originally recorded in Hollywood in 1963 and digitally remastered in 1995, these performances by the Voices of Jimmy Joyce capture on CD the original arrangements of all 15 Christmas classics by Alfred S. Burt. This recording was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1964. It includes This is Christmas, Some Children See Him, and The Star Carol.
Customer Reviews:
This is Christmas.......2007-01-10
As a companion to The Christmas Mood, it will bring joy to your heart.
This Christmas music is lively and joyful.
Beautiful.......2006-12-06
Music is appreciated on opinion and personal taste, so I'll simply give mine.
This collection is far too good to be missed by anyone, dissuaded by a couple of negative reviews. If you haven't already discovered the Burt Carols, this is an excellent introduction. Alfred Burt was in attendance at these recording sessions by volunteer professional singers, including the King Sisters. Jimmy Joyce did a fantastic job of organizing (and I'm assuming arranging) these carols.
The arrangements and vocals are thoughtful, and beautiful. What an amazing legacy that Burt left behind, as he died at the young age of 33.
This music captures the spirit of the Christmas season perfectly, and musical snobbery should have no place in the face of these masterpieces.
You will love this collection of the complete Burt carols. It is part of an annual tradition at our household.

Modern Christmas Carols performed soft and sweet.......2006-10-04
The carols of Alfred Burt have always been something special, and thanks to the efforts of various singers (Nat King Cole, Julie Andrews, John Williams and the Boston pops, etc.) many of these carols are still heard occasionally though not frequently enough to my ears.
This album originated on Lp in the 1960s as a stereo answer to an earlier 10" Lp on the Columbia label which featured many of the Burt carols. This is a complete collection of all 15 carols. The effect is simple and pure as if a group of carolers were gathered at your door. The voices blend beautifully. There are a few glitches in the transfer and the opening notes of "We'll Dress The House" have been clipped.
For anyone looking for the real music of Christmas but wanting something beyond the standard two dozen famous carols, this disc will provide a welcome change of pace.
a definite five star album.......2005-12-19
I have nearly 120 Christmas albums. This ranks as one of my favorites. I am quite suprised that some of the reviewers were so critical. First, to the best of my knowledge there is currently no other complete collection of the Alfred S. Burt carols. That alone makes this album special. Secondly, the 16 voice a capella choir of the Voices of Jimmy Joyce do a wonderful job. The singing is crisp and concise, the lyrics easily understood. The musicianship is excellent and the arrangements are extremely good. The third verse is always performed with the original Burt harmonization. While the additions of new arrangements distress some reviewers, I believe that repeating the same harmonization for multiple verses would become tiresome and dry. The melodies are exquisite and harmonize well in new ways. The arrangements used by Joyce are fresh, but in no way dissimilar or out of context with the originals. The effect is of a continuous whole and the album works perfectly. I would highly recommend this album for someone wishing to purchase quality Christmas music. As for the Waring version, I have not heard it, and it is not currently available on CD. It would seem rather ridiculous to deny yourself the joy of these carols now in hopes that maybe at some future time another version might be released.
A Tall Order, but a Good Effort.......2005-07-15
(I own the original LP version of this album, so I am here commenting on the musical content only, not the quality of digital transfer, remastering or what-have-you.) Overall I was quite pleased with this album, my only previous exposure to Burt's carols being the selections performed by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. I will say that those remain my favorite performances of those particular tunes, as they are very simply interpreted and altered very little, if at all, from Burt's original scores, and that seems to yield the best results. However, I don't think the Joyce Singers' re-arrangements are inappropriate, as some other reviewers have expressed. In a few cases the arrangements get more elaborate than they maybe need to be, but I would not go as far as to say they are in bad taste. Burt's melodies are very strong --they do not suffer from the changes in the supporting parts, and if I am not mistaken, each cut on the album contains at least one verse of the composer's original part-writing. I have yet to hear an album of exclusively Burt carols that I've enjoyed more; very good overall. But, to my knowledge, nobody's recorded the perfect one yet.
