Customer Reviews:
The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12
The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!
A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26
One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.
Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.
The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.
A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29
"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.
All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.
Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.
The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!
I Love it !.......2006-09-06
I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.
The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!
The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13
The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
one of my favourite r&b albums.......2007-01-20
I purchased this album and brandy's self-titled debut around the same time and was playing them all the time. While I prefer brandy overall, this album was pretty good. I love monica's beautiful voice and it fit really well with the r&b tunes on here, which contained splashes of new jack swing, hip hop and funk. Before You Walk Out Of My Life and Why I Love You So Much were singles and among some of her best ones. Dont Take It Personal and Like This & Like That were big r&b hits in 1995 and were uptempo and radio friendly. A song that stood out to me was Skate, which would have made her an even bigger star, it's a feel-good dance/disco song for the dancefloor. Another highlight is tell me if you still care, which is a remake of the SOS Band hit, and it was remade way better than when janet jackson and mariah carey sampled it, I'd take monica's remake over those other two. The remaining is mostly ballads and they totally match her voice and are melodic & smooth like butter. R&B teen music ruled in the mid 90's, but now girls are all about being slutty and trying to have sex appeal instead of letting the music speak for itself the way these young stars did back in the 90's. At the time of this album, she did several other songs that are worth checking out: a song for the nutty professor soundtrack, and a beautiful ballad, For You I Will for the Space Jam soundtrack. When I first heard the latter, I thought it was a new whitney houston song and was pleasantly surprised when I learned that it was Monica. Also check out Boy Is Mine, she shows a lot of maturity on that album, but it's more pop than r&b like this debut.
Still the best of her four albums (and she was only 14 when she made it).......2007-01-18
Back in 1995, there were some high expectations of then-14-year old Monica. This album certainly meets and exceeds them. "Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)" is a 90s old school classic, as is the slightly uptempo ballad "Before You Walk Out Of My Life". Though not a charting hit, "Skate" is also a great song that really should be played at skating centers.
Remember this?.......2006-07-23
Remember this? Back when R&B still had some actual MELODY instead of that lazy "thug" droning that now permeates the airwaves?
Another Example of "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number".......2006-07-02
Actually I gave 4.5 Stars. When I listened to this debut for the first time,I really doubted whether she was only 14 years old,cuz Monica's vocal showed mature talent indeed...I like every track in the album, which always lets me feel so comfortable...A pretty good work of modern R&B!
BTW,I think that Monica should leave Missy, which maybe is the most important thing for her...
Just one of dem old school days.......2006-04-21
Monica's debut album was really hot, each song of this ambum is nice and reminds me of the Old School days when R&B was better. It's been almost 11 years since it was released and it still sounds great, this album is a true classic.
This girl has had talent since an early age (15), although her voice still changed respect "The boy is mine" and "After the storm". She's an underrated singer with a precious voice

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Soul beyond stereotypes.......2005-04-01
Every song on this album has it's own perspective and "Bill" is not the only one here that is unexpected but all-too-believable. "Slow Drag" is one of my all-time favorite hot dance numbers for three years now. Great music on the love/lust songs ("Burning," "I Don't Want to Steal It," etc.) and great lyrics too on the more atypical numbers about what happens when you're past all that ("You, Her, and His," "Help Yourself," "Cleaning House," etc.).
Anyone who loves this album should give a listen to Jimmy Lewis' album "Soulgasm" where Peggy and he do a fantastic duet, "See You Next Weekend."
If I could only have two soul albums from the modern era, I would choose these two.
Fabulous.......2003-01-31
This is a dramatic album of deep soul songs. This is most evident on the scandalous hit single "Bill" which clearly tells a story of the man she loves that has a young secret lover which turns out to be another man. The remainder of the album is just as good. She has great vocals thoughout the cd.This is a real keeper that proves soul music is still alive and well.

THIS ALBUM BLEW ME AWAY. FROM THE FIRST CUT TO THE LAST ONE. I HAD NEVER HEAR OF THIS LADY BEFORE BUT WHEN I HEARD THIS ALBUM I BOUGHT TWO MORE AND SENT TO FRIENDS.

Awesome collection of music!.......2005-09-12
Watching the movie I KNEW that I would get the soundtrack. Great selection of music!
Fabulous soundtrack, thumbs up!!.......2005-06-24
This soundtrack is very good. After I watch this movie on DVD, since I like this movie and I immediately listen to this soundtrack of this movie (The bad news is I buy it separately, not together in one DVD box). Frankly speaking, this soundtrack is just excellent. Most of them are rock music, no boring music like slow music. All tracks are absoultely fabulous and stunning all the way around. As the result, I like it and truly recommend to everyone. If you are planning to buy this movie on DVD, get this one also together with your movie. Trust me or you will regret it.
(Tracks that I like: all of them.)

A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

By the time she left Atlantic Records in 1963, Ruth Brown could look back on 24 R&B hits dating back to her first, "So Long," in 1949. Raised in the church, her chops honed in Lucky Millinder's Big Band, she could deliver technique and attitude to burn, breaking hearts with smoky ballads and raising the roof with brash jump-blues numbers. Over the years her reedy, delicate voice evolved into a deep, full-bodied instrument, more expressive in its varied colors than it was early on, and she used it to devastating effect, especially on her double-entendre workouts ("Wild Wild Young Men"). The 40 tracks on this 2 CD set chart all the early, towering entries, as well as some interesting non-hits (among these a scintillating foray into gospel-based pop, "I Can See Everybody's Baby") and three previously unreleased cuts. In recent years Brown has delivered exemplary work on the Fantasy and Bullseye Blues labels, but Miss Rhythm is the rock the legend is built on. --David McGee

LUCKY LIPS.......2007-03-06
Finally i found a great song from a great artist ! May her sweet sound live on forever !!
The Young Ruth Brown.......2006-03-16
I first heard Ruth Brown's Wild Wild Young Men on a local blues show. I bought the CD to get that song. I listened to samples of the rest of the CD and thought it would be nice in my collection. Wow was I pleasantly surprised. I think just about every song on both CD's is a winner. I like Ruth's new stuff, she still can belt it out. The energy and quality of her "young" voice of the fifties really sends me. If you like the post war era and roots of rock and roll then this is I believe a good choice to add to your collection. As for me I love the slight naughtiness in songs of this period. I could name them all but a few good examples on this CD would be... Lucky Lips, This Girl's Gone Rockin', Love Contest, 5-10-15 Hours and of course Wild Wild Young Men. I am certainly not learned like many other reviewers, I just like this one and play it alot. Like they used to say "it's got a great beat and you can certainly dance to it."
Atlantic Records' Queen Mother of Soul At Her Early Best.......2000-07-23
Ruth Brown was among a handful of performers (among them, Atlantic Records labelmates Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, and LaVern Baker) who saw and led the 15-year shift where blues and jazz formed rhythm and blues, was renamed rock and roll, then was branched off into the beloved soul era that followed.
"Miss Rhythm," an exceptional collection of greatest hits and rare performances, captures the not always subtle changes black music underwent during the turbulent 1950s. Brown's voice was equal parts Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday (hear the ending of "I'll Get Along Somehow") and even Bessie Smith (the pleading roar of "Standing On The Corner," a song about domestic violence and helplessness).
Being among the first stars of the still-new Atlantic label meant songwriting and arrangement help from its bosses, Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, most notably on a swinging "Sentimental Journey" (with the Delta Rhythm Boys) and "Shrine of St. Cecilia" before climaxing with the #1 hits "Wild Wild Young Men" and "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean."
Disc two finds Brown becoming more a song stylist with less to style. Rock and roll was in full rush, leaving Brown copying the soul and style of hits by LaVern Baker ("Lucky Lips"), the Bobbettes (Bobby Darin's fun-but-silly "This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'") and the mambo and talking blues crazes. The final song, Chuck Willis' "Don't Deceive Me," recalls Clyde Otis' arrangements for Brook Benton and may have been her future had she stayed with the label.
Ruth Brown's late-80s renaissance was welcome. Her appearance on a PBS "American Masters" special, her role in "Hairspray," and this set reminded many of the brave steps a new style, label, and artist took during one of music's most turbulent eras. Atlantic and R&B in general had a queen before Aretha, and Ruth Brown's "Miss Rhythm" is highly recommended.

Kittin, a former French pole dancer, and Hacker, a one-time hardcore headbanger, combine forces in a decidedly sleazy niche, but it does make for disarmingly catchy music. Its simple New Wave synth beats and Kittin's (a.k.a. Caroline Herve) deadpan delivery make it easy to imagine you're lounging in a Eurotrash strip joint, circa 1977, as scantily clad dominatrixes torture willing customers. The 1997 single "Frank Sinatra" is more shocking for its spot-on electro atmospherics than for its lyrics, proving that Hacker's punk years were a valuable tutorial for success 2002-style. Throughout, Hacker spins weird little theramin squirms, horror halo tones, and chunky beatbox handclaps, while Kittin discourses about trading sex for cash ("Stock Exchange"), ambitious disco queens ("Nurse"), and, of course, the burlesque life ("Stripper"). First Album is really a one-song affair, but its alluring message is so kitschy, kinked, and campy, the song never sounds the same. --Ken Micallef
Album Description
The reigning queen of the new wave/electro revival, Miss Kittin's debut with partner-in-crime The Hacker, proves to be a Miss who is distinctive enough to take the 80's-influenced genre to innovative levels. Mixer Magazine has included the artist in their top wrap up of 2002. Includes the infamous X-rated single 'Frank Sinatra' plus '1982'.

You're only at the tip of Miss Kittin's iceberg............2006-03-29
I only gave 3 stars because she has better stuff. I'm a DJ. Trance, house, break beats. Love GOA. Love Infected Mushroom. Love Miss Kittin. This album is okay for her first outing (and the style is unique in that her newer stuff isn't as out-of-the-basement sounding). I agree that the differential among all the songs isn't that wide. But if you like it at all, GET SOME NEW KITTIN. She's badass!!! I Com and Or are both great, but her mixing / spinning is the best. Mixing Me and On The Road are 2 of the best cds i've ever heard. (When she DJ's, not all the tracks are by her, but she knows how to use them) Get them!
This is the real deal.......2006-02-02
I bought this album about a year ago, and loved it. But it's only over time that I have started to appreciate the more complex aspects of it. This is, without a doubt, the single best Electroclash album out there. The Hacker provides some brilliantly clinical music, against Miss Kitten's detached, alienated, nihilistic and carefully affected slighty-broken English vocals and lyrics.
Many probably bought this because the heard 'Frank Sinatra', and found it quite amusing. That's what I thought at first as well. But after listening to it a few times, you realise it is a pretty smart song, concerning the moral vacuity at the heart of modern celebrity. Miss Kitten is a very astute social commentator, with tongue in cheek at times. Miss Kitten creates an image in our heads - going out with her carefree 'famous friends', eating caviar, drinking champagne, having sex in limos and VIP areas. They then discuss Frank Sinatra, and find the idea of him being dead amusing. A less sophisticated artist would simply write 'modern celebrity is vain, shallow, and vacuous'.
The Hacker is quite clearly a very talented producer and musician, though in terms of producing 'tunes', he only gets a couple of opportunities on this album to really pull out all the stops. Most of the rest are quite minimalist and clinical in the electroclash style - which compliments Miss Kitten's vocals. Whilst this makes most of the songs less danceable, this album is not supposed to be an retro 1980's electronic musical excercise. The best tune on the album is 'Stock Exchange' - a beautifully built, multi-layered tune that could fill any dance floor.
Ladytron are more radio friendly are arguably write better tunes, but this is a far smarter piece of work. More of the same, please.
kind of disappointed........2005-02-10
i bought this because I was looking for something new, electronic, and fun. It's new (to me). It's electronic. It's fun, kind of. But there's a problem. All the songs are non-distinguishable from the others, in my eyes.
The only one that REALLY caught my attention is "Stock Exchange." It's pretty good... actually, it's really good. I even went out to my car in the snow to grab this CD to listen to JUST that song, oh, and to hear her say "You know frank sinatra? he's dead" I thoroughly enjoy that, even though it's stupid.
I don't know. I guess the reason why this didn't get two stars is because I almost see myself growing to really like this. Almost. I can see myself picking it up just to listen to "Stock Exchange," and then just listening to it in the background while I'm in the internet, and eventually I'll begin to NEED it. I love electronic music. Give it to me anyday over anything acoustic.
I don't know if this has helped much, but if you're reading all the glorious reviews claiming this is the best piece of music ever in the world you'll ever hear, and blah blah blah, just make sure you REALLY listen to the music samples, or something. think about it.
Ladytron is much better, and they're in the same musical vein.
bit weak.......2005-01-04
I got this based on the positive reviews and the price. I'm a big fan of Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and da glitz, so I thought I'd try this. I'm not that impressed. The music was simple and emotionless. Like it came from a $20 cassio keyboard...and nothing else. The tracks were ok but all about the same like listening to the same song over and over except for a brief pause of a french track. Oh well I'll keep it but it'll be at the bottom of my playlist.
Best album featuring Miss Kittin.......2004-07-28
I love this CD. I will listen to it on my way to work and EVERYTHING. It's amazing to see how much is on this album, and that Miss Kittin only recently released her first album.
My favorite song on here is 1982. I just LOVE that song, aside from also being the same year I was born, so I kinda can identify with it a bit better.
Other ones that stand out are Frank Sinatra, and I'm sure we've all heard that song by now. Being probably the raunchiest song on the album. I love it!
Other than that, the electric beeps, and slow tempo might now appeal to everyone, but I listen to everything, and for some reason, I really love this album.
