Album Description
Missy higgins kept a very low public profile in 2006 but that doesn't mean she hasn't been keeping busy. In fact with her typical lack of fuss and fanfare the former triple j unearthed winner spent the second half of last year in los angeles recording here brand new album 'on a clear night'. The highly anticipated release is currently scheduled for the end of april in australia. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer mitchell froom who helmed the recent finn brothers cd and the first 3 crowded house albums plus discs for such acclaimed singer-songwriters as ron sexsmith, elvis costello and suzanne vega. The first song to be lifted from the album is 'steer' - a positive and life affirming song which missy previewed live during the us and uk touring she did in mid-2006. Missy's debut cd, 'the sound of white', remains in the australian top 40 over two years after its release. The album is now certified 9 times platinum and is one of the highest selling australian albums of all time!

Higgins second album shines brightly for most, but barely gives off a spark (for me).......2007-06-16
As an Australian, it seems part of the culture to stand up for and admire Missy Higgins. I have yet to meet someone in real life and not from the internet that dislikes Missy's music.
So, I have to give this cd a one star rating simply because the songs all sound the same apart from '100 Round The Bends' and 'Steer' which are the greatest songs on the album.
Her lyrics you can't deny are beautiful and meaningful, and her voice registers much emotion as she sings, but it's just not a very interesting listen...
The songs on 'A Clear Night' which are overly mellow and slow are not particularly catchy or memorable unlike the song 'Ten Days' in her previous effort, which has just enough beauty to push through the barriers of bland and have a place in listeners who usually wouldn't listen to this kind of music's heart.
There's no doubt Missy Higgins seems like a lovely girl who cares about her music not being commercial and sticks up for causes like vegetarianism and anti-war, so this isn't a review having a go at her, but when it comes to her music, you'll either be into it straight away or not. It's not really an album that grows as such...
I strongly recommend 'The Sound Of White' album if you're a newcomer into the world of Missy Higgins - it's just an all-around better album.
Missy Higgins - never understood the hype about her music and never will, sorry. Honestly, Amiel Daemion, I believe is a much worthier singer to be placed on a pedastal and worshipped musically with this category of soft, almost acoustic music. However she doesn't get the attention she deserves, sweeter and less gritter voice, too.
And that's my review!
On a Clear Night...dont compare it with The Sound of White...you will only be disappointed........2007-06-02
Well I really thought that this album would blow "The Sound of White" away before I heard it. The truth is, it doesn't. This is because it is not in the same field as TSOW.
Her previous album was much more piano driven. This is much more upbeat guitar driven. At first listen, it was a major disappointment, but after a few full listens I can confidently say I love this album more than her first.
The songs have their own identity and I dont mind listening to any of them.. well maybe just 1 track (Secret), but even so I love all of these tracks.
Where I Stood is a track which probably mirrors her previous album more than any other, it is a great song which features more piano than anything. 9/10
100 Round The Bends is a much more upbeat song driven by funky guitars with great lyrics. A great upbeat track. 8.5/10
Steer, another guitar driven track..the 1st single. I loved it from the first listen and I still love it. Uplifting and positive. 9/10
Sugarcane goes back into the piano with light guitar and it is a pretty song. Deep lyrics and a pleasure to listen to at anytime. 8/10
Secret is a track which I dont love, but dont hate. I can tolerate it but it isnt my favourite. Its driven by guitar and its really bluesy. 7/10
Warm Whispers is a huge favourite of mine. I love the simplicity of it and the great lyrics. An absolute gem. 10/10
The Wrong Girl has to be my 2nd least favourite track, it is just flat to me, nothing different or unique about this track. 6/10
Angela is an awesome song! It is really folksy and really takes you away with its enchanting simple country music and pretty lyrics. Love it. 10/10
Peachy is a great upbeat guitar driven song with great angry lyrics and with real emotion put into it. Another favourite of mine. 10/10
Going North sounds like something off Gilmore Girls to me! haha its a great Australian-esque country-ish song with simple guitars and backing vocals with some other guy near the end which fits in great with the track. This album is getting better and better! 9/10
Forgive Me, wow this is the simplest a song can get. The term simple, yet effective applies 150% to this track. With a simple guitar and eerie echo, this track gleams with powerful vocals and emotive lyrics. This album couldn't have closed with a better track. I WANT MORE! 9.5/10
So incase you couldnt tell, the 2nd half of the album really hit it with me and I truly believe after a few listens you will love this album and appreciate all the things going for it like the music, lyrics and vocals.
Pick this up. The only reason people are so majorly disappointed by this is because they are directly comparing it to The Sound of White and not judging it individually as its own body of work. Please try it out, you are missing out on some true gems!

Impossible to fault.......2007-05-29
I really thought Aussie singer/songwriter Missy Higgins might have a struggle on her hands to better her excellent 2004 debut The Sound Of White. But with her second release, On A Clear Night, she may well have done just that. Her latest batch of songs are, in a word - gorgeous, and their appeal grows with each listen. Opener 'Where I Stood' is an immediate highlight, a song which shivers with emotion, pulling the listener in with a trademark Higgin's tail of lost love/lost identity over a beguiling, yearning melody. Other standouts are the single 'Steer', the breathlessly beautiful 'Warm Whispers' and the 'The Wrong Girl' which seems to have set up permanent residence in my brain - not that I mind one bit. I've only been in possession of On A Clear Night for a couple of weeks, but I sense already, that I'm gonna keep coming back to this album time and time again. Missy Higgins has again shown us just what a genuine talent she is - one of the most gifted and luminescent singer/songwriters to have graced the scene in some time.
Beautiful Music from an Outstanding Singer/Songwriter.......2007-05-12
Entering at #1 on the Australian charts upon its release in April 2007, "On A Clear Night" is Missy Higgins' second studio album and a thoroughly enjoyable follow up to her highly successful debut, "The Sound of White". A more tightly packaged collection of material than the latter, "On A Clear Night" contains the same perfect combination of velvet vocals, emotive lyrics, top-quality songwriting and production that her debut did. The lead single "Steer", a #1 single in Australia, is catchy and engaging. But there is much better on this album. "Where I Stood", "Sugarcane" and "Warm Whispers" are beautiful and timeless songs that demonstrate the abundance of musical talent which Missy Higgins possesses - these three songs alone qualify "On A Clear Night" as a truly quality recording. The more acoustic tracks "Secret" and "Forgive Me", and the folk-like "Going North", are additional bonuses that add to an already fine collection of original tracks. Along with the spectacularly gifted Tina Arena, Missy Higgins is an outsanding ambassador for Australian music at the global level and she deservedly has a long recording future ahead of her. 5/5.
Another Great Record. .......2007-05-09
Missy Higgins is a fantastic singer and songwriter, which is just as evident on her second record as it was on her first "The Sound of White." It will be all but impossible for her to match the hype and buzz surrounding her freshman record, but in my eyes the quality of "On a Clear Night" is right up there with it.
The album is less piano driven then "The Sound of White" a fact that Missy says is due to her constant touring behind the success of the first album. She says that it's harder to write songs on the piano when you are on the road, so she stuck to writing on the guitar, but the songs don't suffer because of it. They may sound a bit different then the tracks on her first record, but it's in a good way.
The first single from "On a Clear Night" is "Steer", which is a very upbeat, positive song which talks about taking control of your life. Other tracks like "Going North" and "100 Round the Bend" also focus on themes of empowerment and destiny all the while featuring toe tapping rhythms and masterful playing.
The record has some darker, more haunting and serious tracks like "Forgive Me" and "Where I Stood" and "Secret." These tracks are not all autobiographical, and Missy says she has taken leave of making all of her songs sound as if they are her inner feelings yearning to break free. She creates characters and makes them the star of her songs, like in "Angela" which was inspired by seeing an old black and white photo of Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. She thought that despite Vivian's apparent submissiveness and dependence on Clark, it was in face Vivian that was in control the whole time. Missy says she knows a lot of women like that, and so the song was born.
In the end this record is in fact different from her first, but it's indicative of a person who's grown in her craft and, in my mind at least, keeps getting better. Her beautiful voice is still there, complete with her Aussie accent, and the production is top notch as well. This makes for a fantastic listen; if you buy it you won't be sorry.

Basia .......2007-06-07
She has such a fabulous voice and her work fills your spirit !
Sparkling and Sassy!.......2007-01-27
I have enjoyed and admired Basia's bright vocals for two decades now; this is a fine collection and representation of the creative stylings of this jazz-pop-soul-samba lovin' Polish woman. She can get into your heart!
Someone asked in the reviews about pronouncing her name. It's "Bosh-uh," as in rhyming with "Sasha" or "Tasha."
If you enjoy this "best of" album, I guarantee you'll find a lot more great stuff to sing out really loud to on all of her other albums. She's worth it.
Clear Horizon: Best of Basia!!.......2007-01-22
This Foxy Looking/Sultry Voiced Gal Is Fun To Listen To! Anyone know how to pronounce her name??? This is a great album to have!Except for a couple of songs where she seems to fall a little flat, the rest is outstanding. Her style of vocals sets herself apart from other singers and I find that refreshing. GOOD STUFF!!!! AAA+++
I love this cd.......2007-01-09
This woman has the most amazing voice. I listen to this cd in my car. It is so uplifting and makes me smile.
Clear Horizon: The Best of Basia.......2007-01-05
This is a great collection of hits for adult contemporary and jazz music fans. Basia's voice is unique yet soothing to listen to. If you love the vocal stylings of Sade or Corrine Drewery of Swing Out Sister....then you will enjoy the sweet sounds of Basia.

Spare Yourself the Disappointment.......2007-05-10
If you loved Final Straw and Eyes Open, you'll hate When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up. Trust me. Like the majority of Snow Patrol's new fans, I discovered the underrated rock group when watching Live 8. So we bought Final Straw and were not disappointed. It's a great album and in my opinion is better than Eyes Open, although that too is an album worth checking out.
When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is not. Like many, I thought Final Straw was Snow Patrol's first album and was happy to learn that they had two other albums, one released in 1998 and another in 2001. My joy died the moment I played this album. Don't get me wrong. I didn't expect it to sound like Final Straw and I love it when rock bands experiment with their sound, but When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up is without doubt Snow Patrol's worst album thus far. If you absolutely must buy one of Snow Patrol's early albums, buy their first - Songs for Polar Bears. It's a good debut with some memorable, catchy tunes. What's more, it proves to Snow Patrol's critics that the band can really rock hard when they want to. While it's not as good as Final Straw or Eyes Open, Songs for Polar Bears is a masterpiece compared to this one. You've been warned.
Great Music.......2007-03-12
This is early Snow Patrol, but this band out of Ireland has it together. If you like their new music, this is a must.
When it's all over you'll never notice.......2006-11-10
As a major fan of Snow Patrol, (even before this year, yes) I was very interested in this album because it is the one no one talks about. After purchasing it, I kind of figured out why. It isn't bad... that's certainly not the word for it. Its dreamy soundscape and ethereal vocals are anything but bad. It's just... nothing truly special. To me, a lot of these songs sound the same and if I play the cd in my car (on auto repeat) I never realize when it finishes and starts again. There are a few small gems, "Olive Grove Facing the Sea" and the title track, but when compared to other Snow Patrol greats, they're something I keep in reserve for a rainy day. For anyone well-versed in Snow Patrol, if you're going to compare albums (and you really shouldn't) it would be most like Songs for Polar Bears. Anyway, I wouldn't put it on the top of your wishlist, but if you're looking for some new music and haven't figured out what to get yet... this wouldn't be a bad choice.
Interesting to say the least..........2006-03-05
Having bought(and loved)Final Straw, I decided to give When It's... a chance. Although this album is not as indie downbeat as Final Straw it's still an excellent album. There are some genuinely excellent songs on this like Making Enemies, Chased By I dont know what and One Night Is Not Enough, while simple but geniusly done songs like Black and Blue, Make Love To Me Forever and the title song work well. So, overall, a good but not great album.
Delusional Much??.......2006-02-24
How anyone on this fine planet of ours could consider this album anything but extraordinary simply baffles me! Gary and the boys have seriously come through with the goods on this album!
"An Olive Grove Facing the Sea" is one of my all time favourite songs. Beautifully sung, written and produced. If you've ever longed for someone that you feel like you can't breath if you don't see them, this is the song for you.
The other standout on this album is the heart wrenching, and completely captivating "One Night is Not Enough". Talk about your honest expression, and I'm sure there isn't a person alive who can't relate to this song.
Overall, this album is one of my "moon" albums, meaning if I could only take 3 cd's with me to the moon, this is one of them. Right alongside Coldplay's "Rush" and DMB ""Before These Crowded Streets"

Amazon.com essential recording
In 1972 it probably seemed like the year belonged to a blues-tinged wall-of-sound rock band--maybe Deep Purple, who recorded Made in Japan that year--but from an aesthetic vantage, the blues-rock mantle has to go Captain Beefheart. In 1972 producer Ted Templeman took the controls for a pair of stunning Beefheart diamonds (in the rough of course), The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot, both collected here in full on one CD. Beefheart's voice sounds rightly inimitable, growly and gruff and lyrically cryptic. For its part, the Magic Band is in top form as well, integrating marimba and an assortment of percussion into the slide guitar forestry. There's a distinct and good reason that the celebrated Beefheart box set of rarities is called Grow Fins: the tune, as it appears on this collection, is a classic terrain-defying testament of love as only Don Van Vliet (Beefheart) could provide, a surreal and funny little tune caught in a skein of rough-hewn music that's stood the test of time splendidly. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Does it matter?.......2007-01-11
Some albums/songs create a moment's transcendence in a life harried by the day to day. Some artists create a moment's identification between me and the music. And then there are the artists who have changed the way I think about the world. Don Van Vliet is of the second type in my ears. He opened my eyes to the golf ball around me and for that I am in his debt. And to the point, Clear Spot is the album that I think of when I think of the captain (not that I don't respect The Spotlight Kid). I haven't owned a copy since I was 17 and I can still hear the songs echoing through the canyons of my mind. I repurchased this combo a few months back and after all these years my memory only matches the music. How often can we say that?
In the 21st Century I listen to RadioHead or Mark Sandman (see ya on the flip side) or Tom Waits and I can hear Van Vliet in all of them. He is the musician's musician because, to me, he dared to walk out into the void and embrace what he found there. I am happy to blabber and smoke in his company.
If you like Captain Beefheart's peculiar distillation of life you will love this album.
The Captain's One Successful Sellout.......2007-01-08
Five stars reflects the bodacious Clear Spot, even if it is cobbled together with a rather mediocre Spotlight Kid.
Spotlight features the Captain's greatest Magic Band, just finishing touring what was arguably his finest achievement: Lick My Decals Off Baby (still out of circulation!). However, the Captain in desperate pursuit of commercial success now pushed the band hard ever increasing the cult-like discipline. The result was a fairly monolithic trad-blues product. Actually any one of the cuts off the Spotlight album are pretty good, but taken altogether, it's rather a drag.
The Magic Band was pretty well fed up by this point. Drumbo and Rocket Morton took off, moving Art Tripp to drums and recruiting Oregon (former Mother, later Little Feet) to bass, as well as Elliot Ingber. Zoot Horn Rollo and producer Ted Templeton basically through Don out of the control booth.
Suddenly the possibility of merging the Captain's dada sensibility with a fairly rocking production emerged. There was room for the intensely beautiful Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles with the outrageous fun of Big Eyed Beans from Venus and Golden Birdies. (Webcor, Webcor!)
That his subsequent sell-outs were so pitiful has more to do with the loss of the rest of his band (after discovering he had dissed them out of their tour money) than any loss of his prodigious talent. His three last classic albums proved that.
But for those sonic adventurers rightly attracted to the great Captain's underground adventures, don't forget to check out his one legitimate shot at FM play (even if the industry proved too ignorant to actually play this stuff). It's a qualified hoot.
A must have .......2006-09-26
This is unbelievably great. You get two of Captain Beefheart's masterpieces here; The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot. Making this a double album which easily holds it's own with integrity next to any that have been released. It is just that strong. I have always been a fan of double albums and these two go together perfectly. Because they were actually conceived separately they are both strong and hold their own so putting them together is a Beefheart fan's dream come true. It is not Trout Mask Replica, which I adore, but some of the greatest blues you're likely to hear bar none. Everything about it is superb. If you are not completely insane you'll not hesitate to get this and you'll be glad you did. It is what blues aspires to be and a treasure that far too few will be fortunate enough to understand and appreciate.
great wild bluesy experimental verbal goodness.......2006-05-13
The Magic Band was at a high point (Though Zoot Horn Rollo says that they didnt' play that well on Spotlight Kid, he recommends Clear Spot) the guitars are groovin' the tracks are exciting and Beefheart's Howlin' Wolf-esque vocals are brilliant on this pair of records.
There are standout tracks all over this collection.
And for fun you can watch a couple of videos on Youtube.com of songs from this collection - Black Eyed Peas from Venus is one of them - great psychedelica - and I'm gonna Booglarize you - with the band bouncing and jamming like something put together by spike jonez.
anyway - you can't go wrong if you like rock, blues, or good guitar noise.

Pretty cool live DJing, but it's not great as it's a little cheesy and dated.......2006-01-12
First of all, the album isn't all that long and it's pretty repetitive (he repeats the same song - "Let Me Clear My Throat"). DJ Kool himself isn't that great either - he's not bad, but I think some people might not like him. The beats here are pretty great, but his singing/rapping ruins it in a way (also, the production is pretty good but could use some remastering). If you like him, though, then that won't matter. The most well known song here is the lesser known hit "Let Me Clear My Throat" which most of you have probably heard before but don't know who performed it. The lyrics here are pretty pointless as it's essentially just a party album. If that's what you're looking for then it's merely "good", but I doubt most people would call it great. Overall, it's a pretty short album that genre fans will like, just not love. All in all I'd still recommend it.

the entire album!
Hot Club Song!.......2003-06-16
My Favorite song on this album is of course Let Me Clear My Throat, my friends and i recently visited Cancun, Mexico and this song was one of the most popular club songs that was played over there, i love this song, it just gives u this special kinda energy to just get to the dance floor immediately and do your thang, this song is off the rip..4 real
Awsome.......2002-05-02
Awsome techno cd, for anyone who likes good dance with a nice beat.
Awesome party album!.......2001-01-21
The only reason I gave this album 4 stars is because it was way too short(only 8 tracks and 2 of them are an intro and an outro). But otherwise, this album is slammin'! It's a great cd to play at a party or in a club! The best song is the title track Let Me Clear My Throat(which is featured 3 times on the cd: the regular version on track 2, the Old School Reunion Remix on track 7, and on the 20 Minute Workout Remix on track 6), but I also really like the songs Put That Hump In Your Back, and I Got Dat Feelin'(which samples the beat for Naughty By Nature's classic song "Uptown Anthem"). If you're looking for a good party album, pick this up today!
Let Me Clear My Throat Is PHAT.......1999-06-05
This album is PHAT!!! Track #2 Let Me Clear My Throat gets any party bumpin. If you want to get tha honeys on tha floor this is the album that will do it!!

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Plus bonus stickers!.......2007-05-05
I recently bought the 1996 Ode/Epic(Sony)/Legacy release of this album (EK 65002).
The name of the album is Clear. I mention this because the one-paragraph blurb on the CD's back cover refers to the album -- not just once, but twice -- as "Clear Spirit." I am not making this up (and over 10 years later, they still haven't bothered to correct it).
The album was originally released in 1969. I mention this because that information appears nowhere on the CD, or its back cover, or the companion booklet (although the booklet includes a recording date for each track).
Have I mentioned the stickers? My copy came with three of them on the front of the case, and only one is the kind that can be peeled off without leaving lots of paper/adhesive residue behind. And one of the other two is a big yellow sucker that takes up most of the bottom left quarter. I love it when I have to remove the album cover from the jewel case to really see it, and I'm sure most other CD buyers do, too!
As for the music: Although this is arguably the weakest of Spirit's first four albums (I'd say it's pretty much a tie with their 2nd album), I wouldn't want to be without Dark Eyed Woman and I'm Truckin', and I'm also pretty fond of Ice.
But the question must be asked: Does this record company really deserve anybody's business?
Just as good as I remember!.......2006-11-06
I bought this album on vinyl, originally, when it was released in the sixties. Unlike a lot of bands, Spirit still sounds as fresh and relevent today as they were cutting edge in the sixties. They were always ahead of their time and still have a unique sound that no other group has ever equalled.
I had several of Spirit's albums, by the early seventies, and I'm collecting the CD reissues. Among them, "Clear" remains my favorite. It is rather unique in Spirit's discography, with its instrumental tracks "Ice" and the title track, "Clear," being my favorites, accompanied by strings.
I think there is much here that today's youth would identify with, just as I did when I was a teenager, myself. From the melancholy "Cold Wind" to "Give a Life, Take a Life," Spirit's music remains as relevent as ever. The only exception might be the now dated "1984," although its theme, like the Orwell novel, is still relevent today.
If you're looking for good, solid rock songs with a sound that is unique, you can't do any better than "Dark Eyed Woman," "Apple Orchard," "So Little Time to Fly," "Ground Hog Day," and the Spirit classic "I'm Truckin'."
I think one thing that set Spirit apart from most sixties bands, and still does, was its fusion of rock with elements of jazz, partly (or mostly) due to the influence of Ed Cassidy's background as a jazz drummer. Coupled with Randy California's Hendrix-inspired guitar virtuosity, Spirit's sound is unique in the annals of rock music and has never been duplicated. Whether you're an old fan returning to their music or you've never heard of them and would like to find out more, I think you'll find much here to like.
Music in your head.......2006-02-05
This was the first Spirit album that I had back when most people only knew about "I've got a line on you" and have had a recording of it in one form or another since it's release. It is one of the finest examples of a group, that still tours today, that was way ahead of themselves and made fusion rock what it came to be. It is by far my favorite group, and with the progressive changes in recording and remixing, (I have just about all of the releases by Spirit from the well known to the obscure) I know that when I take my last breath I will have one of their songs soaring with me into the universe.
This one really grew on me.......2005-05-26
Although I've been aware of Spirit for ages, thanks to FM radio playing "I Got a Line On You" and "Nature's Way", it's only been now since I acquired any of their albums, and of course, I had to get their first four albums, with the original lineup of Randy California, Ed Cassidy, Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes, and John Locke. Clear was their last album produced by Lou Adler and on the Ode label (which was owned by Adler), before switching to David Briggs and Epic Records for Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.
Of the first four Spirit albums, I thought Clear was the most difficult to get in to. The first half of the album consists of rock songs, not too far from what you already heard on The Family That Plays Together and their self-entitled debut. Examples are "Dark Eyed Woman", "Apple Orchard", "Ground Hog", and "Policeman's Ball". There's also the more psychedelic "Cold Wind". Many of these songs tend to have a bluesy bent to it. The second half consists of mellower material, many of them instrumental cuts intended for a film soundtrack (I don't recall name of the film). Some of the songs you can't even call rock. "Ice" is a really pleasant orchestral number, with John Locke giving us some nice use of electric piano, and Randy California giving us some nice guitar work. "Give a Life, Take a Life" find the band exploring more of a soft rock style, I am reminded a bit of the Association here. "I'm Truckin'" is a rocking piece that fits fine on the first half of the album. The title track is another orchestral number, while "Caught" is the most straight-up jazz piece. "New Dope in Town" is another rocking piece, but there's some really interesting jazzy passages to go with it.
Of the first four Spirit albums, this is probably the one to get last, after you get their self-entitled debut, The Family That Plays Together, and Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, but still this album is full of great stuff, just require a few listens to get it.
Clear Headed.......2004-08-17
Over thirty years later after listening to this album for the first time, I finally cleared the cobwebs out of my head and relistened to this masterpiece. What a great, piece of work. I'm only sorry it took me so long to finally hear this recording for what it is.

The growing, if belated, popularity of Ivy is a happy event. Over the course of a half-dozen releases, the band has married slightly trippy atmospherics to immaculate popcraft and the melancholy vocals of Paris-born Dominique Durand. In the Clear, their fifth album, finds the guitars occasionally louder (they roil and distort on the kiss-off "Clear My Head") but the mood essentially the same. It's a romantic, cautiously hopeful one, exemplified by the disc's closing "Feel So Free." Special and secretive--"Tess Don't Tell" repeatedly insists "It's just for you, it's not for anybody else"--In the Clear thrives on trademark Ivy contradictions and, now and then, an unexpected noise in the corners of the sound. --Rickey Wright

sadly lacking.......2007-03-11
No discernible emotion here...just formulaic. Nothing like the gentle gems of "Long Distance"
Amazing lounge music.......2006-06-27
Ivy is the kind of band that really makes you wish you discovered earlier. They have a unique and catchy sound, without the saccharine taste of pop. In the Clear was the album that introduced me to the band, and I was amazed at how comfortable and relaxing the music is. Some songs worth noting is.. Thinking about You, Clear My Head, although all the songs are great. Try their other albums if you like this one, I can't believe how great the quality is for every one of their songs. Sometimes I wonder why they aren't more famous.
a true breath of fresh air in this stale musical landscape.......2006-05-08
Ivy are an indie pop/rock band based in New York. Their members are French accented singer Dominique Durand who has a soft velvety voice and New Yorker rockers Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne) and Andy Chase (of Brookville). If you saw the movie "Shallow Hal" chances are you heard their pop songs throughout the film.
In The Clear is their latest recording and it is their most polished release to date. Ivy have a talent for mixing upbeat rock tracks with sensitive bittersweet pop melodies. Their music this time around is comprised of more drums and louder dominant guitars, giving the album a more Live sound and less moody vibe than say their previous more electronic oriented album Long Distance. The tempo is also faster and more energetic this time around similar to their covers album Guestroom. If one tried to compare their songs to any other bands, the closer they could come up with would be Saint Etienne, The Cardigans and tempo-wise The Cure mixed all together. Sophisticated carefree tunes with an undercurrent about troubled relationships make up their repertoire. It's a well produced album from beginning to end with the tempo getting a bit mellower in the end.
The album starts off with a sonic & starry piece called "Nothing But The Sky" where Dominique's vocals just float dreamily along the soft guitar & keyboard sounds. Next up is the album's first single "Thinking About You" a fast paced rock song that has a strong retro quality to it, a bit like a bouncy sixties song, that is followed by Disco infused "Keep Moving", a song that combines a subtle disco-dance tune along with more retro rock sounds. Similarly "I've got you memorized" combines these disco electronic elements with loud electric guitars blending in and out of the song. What really binds everything together so effortless is the simple sing along lyrics and Dominique's sweet accented singing style, she's just perfect for these compositions. Not dramatic, not overpowering, but rather breathy, softly cool and confident. "Corner Of Your Mind" a hyper party rock song blended with sweet pop that just doesn't get any better than this.
The moodier songs in this album are the real stunners, their lyrics express a feeling of uncertainty and longing. On "Four In The Morning" for example, a track that should win you from just one listen, the lyrics speak for themselves, "Four in the morning and I got that feeling, clocks ticking but my heart's not ticking, eyes open and I'm staring at the ceiling, tell me that you'll leave and give me something to believe in", making this quintessentially an insomniac's anthem and the deepest song in the album. "Ocean City Girl" has a main character that is fading in the ocean and the scenery where the sleepy vocals and the soft sounds bring to the surface the sense of tranquility and longing the song is expressing. Similarly "Feel So Free" is all about escape and freedom, with a chorus and acoustic guitars mixing with relaxed soft indie rock sounds.
It's hard to categorize Ivy, one moment they are a pop band with one track, then a rock band with another, then more electronic or accoustic, but what matters is that they produce amazing pop songs and memorable melodies and they are one of the best Indie bands to come out of New York. Sexy, sophisticated, bittersweet and well-produced airy songs that blur the lines of rock and pop and should delight fans of good pop music, they definitely shouldn't go unnoticed. Give them a spin and discover for yourselves one of pop music's most underrated and talented bands.
Another outstanding release!.......2006-02-26
With every release it becomes harder to pick an Ivy favorite. In the Clear is at least a great as the previouse releases and may just edge them out as the most complete release to date.
One of my favourite CD's ever!.......2005-12-08
Oh my god! I love this cd! This album is the most sophisticated, sleek and chic album ever. Listening to this album makes me want to open my own ultra modern cocktail lounge just so i can play this cd inside it.
No band i have ever head have been able to create such catchy vocal melodies and riffs and team them with such perfectly arranged pieces of music.
The perfect time to listen to this album would be while driving along a winding coast line overlooking a beach. Every time i listen to this album, i am inspired to do so.
My favourite song on this album is 'Keep Moving' and every time i hear it, i get chills down my spine.
This album has an atmosphere all of its own and once you put it in your cd player, you won't be able to take it out. I highly recomend this album.

Great, Great Album.......2005-10-21
This truley is a great album. Most of JOJ's best songs are found on this album:
Fear Of Dying Good, catchy song.
Nazi Halo Great song. One of there best.
Rabbiteen Again, one of their best.
Strawberry Gashes IS their best song. Just one of those songs that touches you in all the right places.
Vivica Good song that really goes nowhere. And it doesnt need to.
Underjoyed Good catchy song. Grows on you.
Star No Star Most people might say this is their best song. Its up there
Losing His Touch Really good song.
Overall, i recommend buying this album- TODAY.
It wont disappoint you.
Great Album!.......2005-10-14
If you like Jack OFF Jill, this is a must. Maybe their lightest work but 'tis really a worthy album. They show a lot of maturity in the lyrics compared to their previous releases, actually in my personal opinion this is the most mature album in their history. Songs like Cinnamon Spider, Rabitteen or Vivica are really amazing. Try this ;)
A more refined "Hole".......2005-09-22
I have a thing for chick bands. I scour the web for new female fronted acts that sound good. There are a good number of hits, but unfortunately more misses. This album falls into the former, it's damn near a bullseye.
I personally consider this album to sound like a more refined and talented Hole. The vocals are mostly clean and crisp which sometimes clashes against the rugged and scoured beats. There are some tough songs on here, like "When I am Queen" and "Nazi Halo".
Most of the rest of the songs are catchy and have a much wider audience appeal. "Cinnamon Spider" and "Star no Star" are some of the more varied in sound styles. Cinnamon Spider is fast and extremely catchy with it's guitars and light vocals while Star no Star is a haunting and slower paced song with equally melodic singing. My personal favorite is "Vivica," in all it's depressing glory. This song has a light beat with lyrics and vocals that ooze self loathing.
This cd is not a single minded effort, it goes in so many directions yet it all seems connected. It's a great album and there's a hidden track at the end of the cd. It's a cover of The Cure's "Love Song"... and it's phenomenal. The only thing is, the album feels like it's over a bit too soon. Still much better than music being cranked out nowadays.
Pretty Good!.......2005-09-06
First of all I can't bring myself to give anything anything less than a 5-star review unless it was un-bearable and there was absolutely no good song and it was bland and un-inspired. This CD is that total oppisite. Sadly Jack Off Jill is now a defunct band but they were so amazing when they were together, and sadly Jessika's new band Scarling doesn't live up the greatness of this CD. The best song here is "Strawberry Gashes."
catchy at first, but angst fades with age..........2005-07-14
I read in Manson's bio that the singer for this band was a groupie of his. And it shows. This cd is a clean, more innocent version of Manson's first cd.
Her voice is nice and catchy, but the content wont appeal to many peole over the age of 16. This was a cd that was made to get quick appeal and then fade away just as fast.
