Where's Kind Of A Drag?.......2002-05-20
I bid on this one and purchased it based on the song listing provided. Kind Of A Drag by The Buckinghams is NOT ON THIS CD no matter what the song listing says! Even the photo of the CD cover does not have it listed. Only is the actual song listing on the sight the one that lists this missing song. Bummer!
it's a happening.......2001-12-04
all the original songs in stereo
Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.

Recorded in a single day at Paisley Park, Prince has confounded audiences yet again by recording a progressive jazz album with only four cuts--each named for a point on a compass--and clocking in at 14:00 minutes. If that wasn't enough, there isn't a single lyric on the almost hour-long disc. Like many before him, the musical savant has decided to let the music do the talking. But in Prince's case it does so, brilliantly. He has fashioned a musical lattice of fascinating conversations that are both compelling and eccentric--veering from the anxious and menacing to the soothing and deeply rhythmic--at times conjuring the specters of Sun Ra, at others, strangely Metallica. Begun as a mere jam session among the latest members of NPG, Prince has made his most collaborative record ever as he mostly plays guitar and leads his deft-handed band from the One Nite Alone tour into uncharted territory. They make seamless swings from "North's" ambient cohesiveness--led masterfully by Rhonda Smith's liquid bass--to the almost head-banging lumbering beast of "East," into the smooth elegant jazz of "West," which freefalls from a sinuous rhythmic R&B groove into a majestic and almost funereal slice of brainy pomp rock, before scaling the slippery slope of space rock on "South." It would be tempting to say that this is Prince's homage to his recently-deceased parents' stint in the Prince Rogers Trio, but it is far too forward sounding to only be a tribute. This is a brave step and it sounds remarkably like the future. --Jaan Uhelszki

Good Prince Instramentals.......2007-05-31
This was definitely worth the money. At first I was a little skeptical but as I listened to it over and over again I found a deeper appreciation. I think that I was expecting something else at first. This was similar to One Night Alone but just instrumental.
Better than the rest!.......2006-08-31
As a long time Prince fan, this doesn't disappoint me at all, especially after his Madhouse CDs in the 80s! Prince continues to shine on here with four instrumentals of pure jazz!
Smooth Experimentation.......2006-05-07
The problem with critics in general, is that they tend to always try to compare and completely define what they are critiquing. Take a different approach and start by accepting and feeling what is there. Prince is roguishly experimenting on this album; having a great time and sharing some musical statements with those that would listen. Laid back, smooth, soulful, jazzy, fun and moderately engaging. Shed any concept of genre and simply enjoy.
Awesome Directions in Music.......2006-04-02
This is a 60 minute terrific cd. I listen to Prince's music for a long time but I have been impressed for this smooth, jazzy, funky joint. Especially recomended to listen to at night with a fine bottle of wine and a cigar.
POWER FANTASTIC.......2006-03-31
N.E.W.S is an incredible showcase of instrumental jam-fest. John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto and Eric Leeds join Prince in this 56 minute opus! Prince's N.E.W.S is a 4 track instrumental jazz style album with no lyrics. Perfect album when you have a hard day at work and want to relax. Eric Leeds delivers amazing saxophone depth! Rhonda Smith lays down some infectious bass grooves. John Blackwell is on point with solid drum beats. Renato Neto's beautiful piano will take you to cloud 9. Prince makes his guitar gently weep! N.E.W.S. is a power fantastic journey. Allstar musicians come together to create beautiful instrumental music. Quality album...I just wish there were more tracks. Prince's N.E.W.S will take you away!

An excellent introduction for one of the bands that set the standard for heavy metal. We Sold Our Soul for Rock & Roll features the original lineup of Black Sabbath, including Ozzy Osbourne on vocals; the songs are selected from the band's recordings up through 1975. The album features several classic songs, several of which are still on rock radio play lists: "Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man," and the ballad "Changes." There's also the humorous "Fairies Wear Boots," the vaguely psychedelic "Am I Going Insane," and the dark, macabre "Black Sabbath" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Most Sabbath fans will already have the albums from which the songs on this collection are taken. However, for the listener new to Sabbath, it's the perfect place to start. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
If you've only got room for one Sab album, make it this one!.......2007-06-16
This is all the Black Sabbath I own. Yeah, I've heard the classic Paranoid at a friend's house and liked it, but I decided to go with this instead because I wanted the basics outside of Paranoid. And man, did I get 'em! 14 classic Ozzy tracks, and 13 are great - my favorites are Iron Man - with one of the best introductions ever (thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... DOO DOO... I AM IRON MAN!) and that pentatonic riff we all know so well (six minutes of head-banging goodness), the thrasher Paranoid; slow-burning antiwar epic War Pigs (Even if it commits the cardinal sin of rhyming by rhyming "masses" with "masses"), the acoustic/electric, Led Zeppelin-like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; the infamous band title track, which may have a better intro than even Iron Man (the rainfall, the churchbells, the tritone - I'll never hear AC/DC's totally awesome Hells Bells the same way again), the bluesy Wizard, pot ode Sweet Leaf (with my favorite Sab riff ever), and the resident simple headbangers Tomorrow's Dream and NIB.
But what the hell is Changes? No more sensitive piano ballads for Sab, the DEFINITIVE heavy metal band out of the "Big Three" of early metal (the others being Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin). Zeppelin doesn't win the award, because Jimmy Page's guitar tone can't touch Tony Iommi's, and in truth, I find Deep Purple too boring to be definitive anything. And while I personally prefer Zeppelin, who overcomes their Achilles heel (Robert Plant, who sings like he swallowed something and can't write a decent set of lyrics when he isn't plagarizing Willie Dixon, AKA the best American composer EVER) with their pure instrumental skill, I very much dig Sab. They aren't your typical testosterone-laden metal band - their lyrics touch on Satanism, drug addiction, war, the occult, horror, sci-fi, all kinds of fun stuff. The lyrics sometimes read as stupid - there wasn't exactly a Bob Dylan in this group - but the way Ozzy delivers them, in that infamous monotone, is perfect. And as I said before, nobody can match Iommi's perfect tone.
One more thing I'd like to point out is the album's title. "We sold our SOUL for Rock 'n' Roll". Great concept, yeah, but note the funny little grammar violation - that implies that the group all shared a soul, and they agreed they'd sell it for rock and roll. I mean, Ozzy never struck me as that bright or anything, but come ON! Oh well, a minor quibble. So even though Changes sucks, this should be in any rocker's collection. Throw up those devil horns and ROCK OUT!
Good Collection.......2007-06-10
Lots of great material here. The only major issue is that you've probably heard many of these songs on classic rock radio a million times. They're still great songs, though. The album comes in at just over 74 minutes, so you're getting a whole lotta sabbath here. This is probably a great disc to buy for someone who enjoys Sabbath, but has never bought any of their CD's (e.g., maybe they only own stuff on tape or vinyl).
We Sold Our Soul............2006-10-15
This is a compilation album that covers the original Ozzy years of the band up through the "Sabotage album. The original vinyl version was a 2 record set, that has been reduced to a single disc for CD. Two tracks were omitted on the CD version. This is a cool collection and includes some of the band's all time best stuff. About half of the "Paranoid" album is represented here along with "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" from their first one. Every song her is a classic including two of my all time favorite Sabbath tracks "Children Of The Grave" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". The ballad "Changes" is a bit of a change of pace for the band (it was recently re-recorded as a duet between Ozzy and Kelly Osborne). One of the things that I find interesting and is a bit of the sign of the times when these tracks were recorded in the early 70's, is that there are no less than 3 tracks on this collection that are basically love songs devoted to drugs. "Fairies Wear Boots" is about acid, "Sweet Leaf" Marijuana, and "Snowblind" cocaine. The album closes with another Sabbath classic "N.I.B." (Nativity In Black). In more recent years there have been Sabbath compilations released that cover significantly more ground than this one, so if you are just looking to get into the band I would probably recommend one of those, but for the time this one was released it was a very nice collection indeed.
Classic Metal Legacy.......2006-07-17
This is where modern metal began. This "best of" CD captures the best of the Ozzy-era Sabbath and includes the band's biggest hits. A great "starter kit" for metal fans.
Top Tracks: "Paranoid", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath"
Great CD...but.......2006-04-29
I used to own the double-album. Remember vinyl albums? Well the double album version had more songs than the CD so I'm giving it 3 stars even though all the songs deserve 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Rock/doo wop standards.......2007-02-25
ROCK, RHYTHM AND DOO WOP is an excellent collection for fans of rock & roll TOP 40 radio. The majority here were top sellers in their day and got the most airtime. By those parameters alone, they would be considered "the greatest."
Main criticisms--
Since these tunes are more likely to appear on various artists compilations, even the beginning collector may already own a good percentage of them. Additionally, the three CDs here could easily have accomodated 90 songs, instead of 66.
The 64-page long-box style book is quite excellent-- packed with full page photos and lots of interesting details. Sound quality of the transfers is very good, as well. Altogether, this is a nice package of rock & roll and doo wop standards.
TOTAL RUNNING TIMES --
DISC ONE -- 54:16
DISC TWO -- 55:45
DISC THREE -- 56:57
A Wonderful Collection.......2007-01-25
The best thing that I can tell you about this collection is that so many people wanted to borrow it at my wife's job she had to bring it home for fear that someone would take it.Wish I could get a commission for all the people that said they were going to buy it. Sound restored wonderfully, brings back a lot of good memories from a simpler time.
The Early Years Of Rock.......2005-12-03
Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop, Vol. 1: The Greatest Songs From Early Rock 'n' Roll is yet another great box set from Rhino Records. The songs span the early years of rock music from the mid 50's to the early 60's. As the title suggests, all styles of music are represented by artists like The Drifters, Buddy Holly, The Shirelles, Del Shannon, The Platters, Ray Charles, Little Richard and many others. Well worth the price, this is a perfect collection for fans of this musical era.
Was going to sell the set, but couldn't do it.......2005-10-01
I sat down at the computer to list Rock Rhythm & Doo Wop CD set on Amazon Marketplace to sell, but just on a whim stuck one of the CD's in the player to listen for a minute. Now I just cannot part with it. The music is so much fun, you cannot stand still during some of the songs, and it really brings back memories (for some of us!). If you enjoy music from this era, this is a great set to have.
Rock,Rhythm and Doo Wop Vol .1.......2002-04-08

Great Music but Overpriced!.......2007-03-10
"Billboard Top Rock 'n' Roll Hits: 1957-1961" offers up some fantastic music from the golden age of rock & roll.
The sound quality is great, as is the selection of hits.
My problem is that there are only 10 songs per disk!
Hey Billboard - this is the 21st Century - you're not selling vinyl anymore.
This set could have been released on 2 CDs and the price set accordingly.
So while I'd rate the music 5 "Stars", my overall rating is only a 3.
GREAT ROCK & ROLL GIFT.......2007-02-07
I got this for my parents for Christmas and they LOVE it. Great way to get your folks to boogie down and get their blood flowin'. They are having a blast with this CD collection.
Great gift.......2007-01-16
I bought this box set for my dad for Christmas - his favorite "oldies" station in his rural hometown just switched to party mix! He really enjoys playing these CD's, although he's not really a CD collecting kind of guy. I'll be getting the next series for his birthday.
The Real Thing.......2005-02-17
These are real hits from the years indicated and separated by disk into the separate years. If you were around in those years and listening to the radio, you don't have to be told this. If the price is right for you, then I highly recommend you buy.
Fantafabulous Album!!!!!!!.......2002-03-26
GREAT ALBUM, lots of variety. you will not be disappointed!!!
Lovely, Stellar, Sparkeling!!

Intelligently Done.......2007-05-22
Me'Shell continues to impress me with her work! She is a true artist at hand. I am upset that I didn't know this experience when this album came out. This is more confrontational than her debut project, and I fell in love with her then! Sistah, keep speaking your mind!
Cookie: the anthropological mix tape.......2005-07-28
Meshell Ndegeocello is a once in a lifetime artist. Brilliant piece of work!
Cutting...edge...hip-hop for adults........2005-04-25
I first heard "Barry Farms" first on KCRW in L.A...then ran out and bought the CD. I am now arranging a cover for my band. Will have to have to give it to our male singer for most venues. I wonder if our female singer would do this one?
Bravura lyrics on the theme of Lesbian relationships, (toasted the ears of this middle-aged white male doctor).
Sensual but sophisticated, in no way obscene. Amazing.
esp. "Barry Farms" and "Pocketbook".
Very stylish jazz twists and turns in otherwise raw, throbbing hip-hop rhythms. First rate jazz instrumentalists.
Michelle's voice is the Anita Baker of street-rap. Hip-hop for adults.
Very, very original material and style.
(The righteous political/ghetto rhetoric on some cuts is sincere but has been done before. She should stick to her wry, I-don't-care ironic style when getting into done-before topics.)
At least 6-8 first rate cuts on this long album. Definitely not for kids, in every sense of the word. Worth every penny. Still amazes me a year later.
It's no "Passion"...but it's better than "Bitter".......2005-02-18
A bass player friend of mine turned me onto Meshell back when "Plantation Lullabies" was released in the early 90's.
I enjoyed it immensely. Then I bought "Peace Beyond Passion"
when it came out a few years later and that album placed her in the musical genius category in my mind.
I imagine it must be hard to compete with yourself whenever you release a stunning piece of work like that...particularly when you are allowing the events in your life to dictate the mood, tempo, and (unfortunetely) quality of your releases.
Meshell seems very angry here. There's nothing wrong with being angry, but when you put anger on a CD you have to know whether or not the audience wants to hear your anger. I didn't.
I just want to hear her kick out some nice groovin jams as she did on her first two CD's. The bitterness she exibited in her last release was even harder to listen to...what was it called? Oh yeah..."Bitter"!
There are a few of examples of nice groovin' jams here.,but much of it is overwhelmed with her anger. Being more of a jazz fan I listen to instrumentation first, arrangements second, then maybe lyrics last. Sometimes I don't even care what the artist is singing about as long as I dig the instrumentation and the songs have a nice groove and the album has a seminal flow.
The songs on this CD are too overwhelmed with politics, spoken word interludes, sound bites, etc. to allow you to focus on the music. I really hate when artists do that. Meshell, leave these tactics to Janet Jackson and gangsta rappers...your music is strong enough on it own without resorting to gimmicks.
If you are really into knowing what Me'shell is "feeling", then you will probably enjoy this CD more than I did. Meanwhile I'll just pop "...Passion" back in my car CD changer, crank it up, and enjoy her at her musical best.
Pure Funk.......2004-09-24
Cookie is the FUNKIEST...just the right mix of consciousness and pure musicianship. I bow to her bass. It's like that. "Earth" is the TRUTH...Gregoir's harmonica is almost as stunning as the lyrics on that joint. I'm a fan for life. I'm that fan that will buy her music even if she's singin the Popeye's menu. I'm there.

Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo practically sweat platinum. As the production duo behind the Neptunes, they have crafted monster hits for everyone from Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears to Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard. In their spare time they make the music they really like under the banner N.E.R.D. Equally inspired by Duran Duran's silk-spun new wave classics and the Beatles' strapping psychedelic epics, Fly or Die, the follow-up to 2002's In Search Of, is a bustling, bumping disc highlighted by rowdy tracks like "She Wants to Move" and "Jump," a collaboration with members of Good Charlotte. The nu-metal crunch of the last album gives way to a more suitable '70s vibe, making the band sound like an unholy cross between Sly & The Family Stone and E.L.O.--as filtered through A Tribe Called Quest. That's a good thing. --Aidin Vaziri

Really good flow to this album.......2007-07-03
Not as good as In Search Of...but much improved flow and has a consistently good vibe.
dissapointed.......2006-11-10
First off, I'm not saying this album is bad, it's not. I was a big fan of their first album and was real excited when this came out. However, I was really dissapointed. They seem to have basically, gone soft. Musically, they've matured quite a bit, but that sense excitement and energy is gone. This is a much more mellow album, with no guest rappers. I'm not saying you need a rapper to make the songs good, in fact songs like Bobby James and Brain were some of my favorite songs off In Search Of... I find this is a good album, but only if I listen to it once every couple months. A lot of the songs sound very similar to each other and it gets old. Just don't expect the same stuff you heard on their last album.

Late one night.......2006-10-13
It all started late one night; I was up watching videos late at night when I happened to catch "She Want's To Move". I thought to myself, "this song seems pretty cool." I hopped on my computer and downloaded the single via P2P software. I began listening to it more and more and it grew on me. N.E.R.D was then added to my repertoire of A list artists. Then one day a friend of mine showed up with a burned copy of Neptunes Presents....Clones and with prior knowledge of Pharrell and Chad I gave it a shot. I was overwhelmed with their behind the scenes genius. It was then added to my repertoire as well. I decided to push the limits and downloaded a few mp3's from Fly or Die(for lack of proper funding)and fell in love. The combination of rock and hip hop created the perfect blend of musical bliss. The move from drum machines to live instruments only made the feel and sound that much greater. With tracks like Maybe, Fly or Die, Don't Worry About It, She Want's To Move, and last but not least, Breakout, you can't help but love. Fly or Die by N.E.R.D appeals to all audiences. Definently a must have.
Really Good!.......2006-07-10
I didn't know much about N.E.R.D. except that it was more-or-less a side project for The Neptunes.
I saw this CD at a good price and figured, why not. I am a big fan of Neptunes beats, but don't expect the same sonics if you pick up N.E.R.D. - the sound is totally different and totally awesome. There is a great retro feel on this one, nothing over done however and mostly guitars as opposed to just beats.
My favourite tracks are: "Fly Or Die", "Jump", "Backseat Love", "She Wants To Move" and "Chariot Of Fire".
Worth checking out.
Influenced By The Past, But They Have Their Own Sound.......2006-06-16
This is one hell of an album! This album could've been considered one of the greatest Pop albums of all time if only it had the proper promotion. The vocals are mediocre, but Pharrell isn't really trying to sing and that's one of the things that make this album great!! As a true music fan, I can hear so many influences. From The Police, to Jimi Hendrix, to Early-Santana, to The Beatles' Sgt Pepper Era, to Early-Solo McCartney. And at the same time, they keep their own style intact.
I wish record companies could realize true talent like Pharrell and Chad instead of spending their money on fake, microwave-made pop artists who only are good for one or two years then they are replaced by another manufactured waste. Overall, "Fly Or Die" could rate up there with the classics like "Sgt Pepper", "Saturday Night Fever", "Thriller"......etc.

Big Bam Boom.......2007-03-09
I wore this album out when I had it on cassette in the 80's and in my experience, a lot of times the mastering from analogue recorded albums of the 80's don't transfer well across to a digital CD format, but they got it right with Big Bam Boom. Clean 80's sound with oomph! For those that don't know, always look for "remastered" old albums released on CD.
Hall and Oates really are great song writers and I think the songs on this album stand up today.
Hall & Oates Rock 'n Soul, Part 1....with remastered sound!!!.......2006-12-13
Rock 'n Soul, Part 1 is the first "greatest hits" album of Daryl Hall and John Oates. Released around the holidays of 1983 (Thanksgiving or Christmas??), this album packs a variety of their songs that they recorded with RCA from 1975-1983 (except for one song that came out in 1973, She's Gone, when H&O were at Atlantic). Also, when this album first came out in '83, there were two new songs that H&O had recorded in September of that year for this album's release, Adult Education and Say It Isn't So. Originally, this album had twelve songs, but now it has 14 (with the inclusion of two bonus tracks). The sound quality of this reissue is better and sharper than the previous CD issue. The front cover art of this reissue is excellent (red, yellow, and black, with a drawing of the two men in yellow having a raised handshake). The previous CD issue of this album had a different front cover image; a color picture of the two guys singing at the microphone (it wasn't bad, but I like the red, yellow, and black cover art better). I first heard this album years ago as a kid when my mother bought the vinyl (it had this red, yellow, and black cover art), and it was wonderful; Hall & Oates have great voices and their chemistry is splendid. This is my most favorite album of theirs. I also have the previous CD issue of it, and 2 copies of the album on LP (one with this black, yellow, and red cover art and one with the color picture of H&O at the mic). All of the songs on this album I like a lot (but I'm not too crazy about the two bonus tracks; no offense to anyone in general). I thought Adult Education was brilliant as well, with the female "oh yeah, oh yeah's" in there as well, to "cheerlead" the song. The bonus tracks are alright, but I would not spend too much time listening to them. I'm pleased that this album was reissued so that I and other fans of Hall & Oates can enjoy this batch of music in remastered form. For those of you that might still have the previous issue of the album on CD, you can either keep it or give it to someone else. Here is my own grading report of this album reissue:
Cover art: A+
Remastered sound: A+
Bonus tracks: C
Hall & Oates' singing on this album: A+
Kudos to the manufacturers for bringing this wonderful album back to stores. Everyone who had this album years ago will be very impressed with its remastered sound!! Get it while you can!!
Plenty of Hits Here.......2006-04-15
If you watch VH-1 classic long enough you will see a video by Hall and Oates. This is a given. The duo had a ton of hits during the 1980's. Legacy Records has recently released Daryl Hall & John Oates Rock N' Soul Part 1. This group had so many hits they literally need a box set to capture all of their classics. However, Rock N' Soul Part 1 is a nice selection of several of the groups biggest hits. The songs on the compilation were handpicked by Hall and Oates.
This duo ruled the early 80's and their biggest hits from the decade are featured on this set-"Maneater," "Say It Isn't So," "Kiss On My List," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)," and "One on One" are among the hits on the Rock N' Soul Part 1. In 1984 Hall and Oates released the album "Big Bang Boom." Only one song from "Big Bang Boom" is featured on Rock N Soul Part 1. "Adult Education" was picked over "Out of Touch" and "Method of Modern Love," two other singles released from "Big Bang Boom." The CD includes two bonus tracks-"Family Man" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." Sure many may gripe about what's not here but you can't deny that "Rock N Soul Part 1" is chock full of hits.
Sounds and looks even better now.......2006-04-04
I've had the original CD version of this title for over five years and it's good to see this album remastered and repackaged with bonus tracks as well as a different (but not new) cover. The sound quality is definitely better this time. This compilation covers 1976 through 1983 basically their most successful period. "Method Of Modern Love" & "Out Of Touch" were hits in late '84-early '85, after this album.
If you really want the ultimate collection then "The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates" may be the way to go. But that doesn't render this album obsolete at all. Here you get the original version of "Adult Education" ,a live version of "Wait For Me" as well as edited versions of "She's Gone" and "I Can't Go For That". There are also liner notes from one of the band members.
If you're new to Hall & Oates then you found the perfect place to start. Even if you already have the original CD version of this album you should consider having this title with its new look and better sound. It puts that previous version to shame.
All killer... no filler!!.......2006-04-03
"Rock N' Soul: Volume 1" was the first major Hall And Oates collection on the market upon it's release in Christmas 1983. They were at the pinnacle of fame at the time and were releasing hit after hit, and they were treated with two more big hits with "Say It Isn't So" and "Adult Education", which were recorded for this album.
While this set has been supplanted several times since by Essential/Ultimate/Very Best Of, to me, this set is the alpha and omega for H&O Greatest Hits. Which makes the remaster/reissue all the sweeter. With the exceptions of Did It In A Minute and Your Imagination, all of the essential hits from 1975-1983 are here. While "Out Of Touch" is missing and would've been a nice bonus track, this contains the truly classic period of H&O and contains the hits and only the hits. "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and "Family Man" have been added as bonus tracks to sweeten the deal.
If you're a big fan of H&O, this is beneath you, you can find all these tracks elsewhere. However, if you're only a casual fan and want a collection with the classic hits from their classic period, without an abundance of latter tracks and lesser known songs, this is the package for you. This is a CD that you can put in from start to finish and love every song. With the exception of "Out Of Touch", Hall And Oates were never the same after this collection, so it was released at precisely the right time in my opinion.

Raised on Philly soul, Daryl Hall and John Oates hit their stride in the mid-'70s, when they abandoned the misguided folkish direction of their early albums for a sound that accurately reflected their roots in mainstream pop and smooth R&B--"rock 'n' soul" as they accurately called it. A string of brilliant hits followed, from the gorgeous "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" to the wicked, finger-pointing "Rich Girl" and "Maneater" to Top 40 manna such as "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," and "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)." At only 12 tracks, this best-of collection is a little skimpy, but it'll do until the inevitable Hall & Oates box set arrives. --Daniel Durchholz

An inspired duo!.......2006-06-16
Nowadays, the duos as musical figures is almost a rarity, but in the late sixties, seventies and eighties, it was synonymous of successful formulas such as Simon & Garenfunkel, Carpenters, Zager and Evans and Air supply.
In this mainstream, Daryl Hall and John Oates filled if I may, a true necessity in the market. Their innovative expressiveness and original moods meant the sound of a generation.
Listening them carefully, you will notice their songs are far to be dated because of its formal construction and melodic lines, attractive and seductive.
Get close to this fabulous duo.
A good (but flawed and short) pre-1984 H & O intro........2004-11-24
This short collection came out in 1983 at the height of Hall & Oates' popularity. At the time, it was probably very thorough, taking several of their then-current hits, mixed in with a few of their 70's songs. Today, though, I'd recommend it as more of a sampler (with only 12 tracks).
1973-1979 TRACKS:
-Sara Smile
-She's Gone
-Rich Girl
-Wait For Me
Being that I'm really not familiar with their work before the 80's, I can't really say if there are any key songs missing here, but it is a nice inclusion. "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" (in its shorter version) are slightly folkish, medium tempo pop love songs.
1977's "Rich Girl" is their earliest song I've really gotten into. It's more of a mix between their folk/pop stuff, and the sound of their 80's arena pop/rock hits. Starting out as an accoustic ballad before a ringing electric guitar and steady beat (though sung in a slight folkish tone) elevate it to a medium rock level.
1979's "Wait for Me" is another medium pop hit, not unlike that too, although I wish the studio version had found its way here instead. Chrnonologically speaking, after this, is the gold mine of the collection!:)
1980's VOICES:
-Kiss on My List
-You Make My Dreams
These monster hits obviously should've made the cut, but their R+B pop/rock remake of "You've Lost That Lovely Feeling" and "How Does it Feel to be Back", both sizable hits too, got cheated.
1981's PRIVATE EYES:
-Private Eyes
-I Can't Go For That
Especially with both these songs representing different styles, it's a nice addition, but it annoys me how the rest of this album always goes relatively unnoticed. "Did It in a Minute" is probably one of their catchiest arena rockers ever, and "Your Imagination" is a great, somewhat unique pop/soul hit.
1982's H20:
-Maneater
-One on One
I love both of these songs, but just like the previous two, so much got sadly left out -- the slow and sexy rocker "Open All Night," the chugging arena rock (and big hit) "Family Man" in particular. Even John Oates' semi-well known silly pop "Italian Girls" would've been nice.
1983 NEW SONGS:
-Say it isn't So
-Adult Education
Both of these went on to become major hits themselves, and rightfully so. "Say It isn't So" is a semi soul-influenced loud pop hit that easily could've been on the previous couple albums. "Adult Education" - a humorous look at present and post-high school life - is a mid-paced, unique guitar pop/rocker that includes elements of rap(!) and hard rock (great guitar and drum build-up toward the end).
OVERALL: With all of even the 1980-83 songs missing, this is obviously not a comprehensive collection, but it's still a good place for a very casual and/or new H+O fan to start. Espeically with its age, it should be fairly easy to find an inexpensive, used copy. Afterwards, I'd recommend one of their more recent collections -- which would include their 1984 and later hits, such as "Out Of Touch", "So Close," and "Everything Your Heart Desires," which obviously aren't here either.
Fantastic.......2004-05-26
I'm sure everyone from the generation before my own has had wonderful memories of Hall and Oates in highschool and college. For those of you who have grown up with this music, my review will probably be nothing but drivel. But if anyone is reading this that is not too familiar with Hall and Oates and checking them out for the first time, then I implore you, get into them! Sadly, it took me years to actually give this album a listen. I had heard of Hall and Oates before, but they were stereotyped in my mind as cheesy 80s garbage. I couldn't have been more wrong. Every track on Rock 'n' Soul is absolutely breathtaking (with the exception of Adult Education, I can do without that one). The majority of the songs on this album are indeed made up of Rock and Soul, but that brief description hardly does justice to such passionate music. I can honestly say that anybody who enjoys a song that is full of love and life will thoroughly enjoy everything that this album has to offer. Tracks like Rich Girl, You Make My Dreams Come True and Wait For Me give me goosebumps every time I hear them. Other numbers like She's Gone, Kiss On My List, Private Eyes and One on One are stellar too. If you're looking for an ebullient, flavorful and longlasting listen, then you have found yourself the right recording in Rock 'n' Soul Pt. 1.
Dated Collection - Start Somewhere Else.......2004-05-14
This is a very dated collection of greatest hits. It was released back in 1983. At the time, it probably was a very good greatest hits collection. It contains 12 songs and back 20 years ago, to get any release with 12 songs was great - but that was in the pre-CD/digital days. Since then, Hall and Oates have released much better and more complete greatest hits collections. I'm recommending "Ultimate Daryl Hall and John Oates". This contains every song on the "Rock and Soul Part 1" CD, plus it goes deeper where Rock and Soul Part 1 failed to go and it contains post 1983 material.
One thing that really annoyed is when an artist calls something "Part 1" and never comes out with a "Part 2". To me, it would have been very easy to come up with a "Part 2" of their post 1983 hits and have another CD. This is just a gripe that I have. The liner notes are also pretty thin in here. Not a lot in terms of credits, discography, photos, etc. Inside the liner notes is a pseudo handwritten version of the lyrics for "Adult Education". I also did learn that Mickey Curry was the drummer for Hall and Oates. If you are a Bryan Adams fan, you will know Curry's work. Two glaring omissions from this collection are "Family Man" and "Did it in a minute". I would have liked to have seen these songs on the collection. This was probably to make room for "Adult Education" and "Say it isn't So" which were newer songs that were released for the first time.
In the post 1983 work, Big Bam Boom would become the next release. It was the most successful album by Hall and Oates and its hard to now see any Greatest Hits collection without songs from that album. You can't blame Rock and Soul Part 1 on this one, its just that more time passed since this was released.
Chances are, if you do get this CD - you probably are going to get it either used or at some sort of bargain sale. And if you can get a good price on it, go for it. Otherwise I'd recommend the 'Ultimate' collection is the way to go as the way to start up your H&O collection. The content is still there on the CD and there are some very good songs on here. My advice there are better places to start with Hall and Oates.

The electro-powered grooves of the writing-production team the Neptunes have abetted fine-to-great tracks by everyone from Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard to Britney Spears. On their debut as performers, they display an irresistible knack for hooky tracks rooted in the eclectic listening habits they developed while growing up in the multiracial Virginia Beach, Virginia, neighborhoods they still call home. Fusing album rock and rap more forcefully and convincingly than Kid Rock or Durst-style aggro bands (the latter of whom they seem to lampoon on "Rock Star"), N.E.R.D. whip up a creamy yet slammin' mix. Main men Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo coax apropos guest shots from Kelis (the get-your-freak-on "Truth or Dare," the sexiest thing here aside from the ménage-a-wow plea "Tape You") and a handful of up-and-coming members. The live instrumentation that replaces the machine-tooled tracks of an earlier import version of In Search Of retains the tunes' syncopation while rendering it palatable for less eclectic rock fans. While not a commercial blockbuster on the order of many of their clients' discs, this venture is nonetheless one of 2002's standout releases. --Rickey Wright

N.E.R.D's debut album was never bettered by the group...........2007-01-29
Having become one of the most prolific producers/Remixers in the business...the production team known as "The Neptunes", (consisting of two members 'Chad Hugo' & 'Pharrell Williams') have lent their considerable skills constructing / Producing tracks for artists such as : "Justin Timberlake/Jay-Z/Old Dirty/Nelly/Britney Spears & LL Cool J". But it was "Zero 7's" astonishing remix of their Album track "Provider", that prompted me to Revisit their Debut album. And seeing as N.E.R.D are considered among the best (if not the best),in the Hip-Hop Producer/Composer stakes, this doesn't disappoint. And rather than just settle for their market leading blend of stuttering beats, and reverberating bass-lines, which would have ensured rave reviews across the board, they take the risky step of cross-breeding with the Rock genre to unparalleled success. From 'Lapdance's' funk/Hip-hop, to 'Provider's' slinky R&B /Hip-Hop beats, to the full on Rock/Hip-hop Hybrid that is "Rockstar" (a sneering look at so called 'Poser's'), and it's hard to find complaint with this album, because it stays close enough to its Hip-Hop Roots to pander to the Hip-Hop markets (especially those with a fancy, for Anthemic beats), and inventive enough to bring elements of 'Rock' to the table, without it sounding forced (and possibly enticing a few Rock fans, that have liked Hip-hop but never felt sure enough to buy a Hip-hop album), truly the best of both worlds then.
"It's almost over now".......2006-11-04
From the club banging hit `Lapdance' to the bump n' grind sex-tease `Truth or Dare' to the subtle hostility of `Rock Star' `In Search Of...' delivers the goods, from front to back, and serves up a replay worthy album for us all to enjoy. Right from the start, from the first bass line on `Lapdance' your instantly glued to this album. Vita just kills on this track ("who baby you want me?" uh-huh). Another standout is `Tape You', which is one of the freakiest tracks I've ever heard. The feel is great though, very islandish with the drum beats. Love `I Am' with Malice, but I must say that my favorite track is the Kelis blessed `Truth or Dare' which gets me moving every time it comes up. Kelis is great here and such a tease ("I am the one with the brightest hair, leather I don't care"), her voice is just so angelic yet devilishly naughty here. `Rock Star' is another brilliant track, although I much prefer the remix done by Jason Nevins which elevates the subtlety and creates a moshpit worthy track. This is definitely an album all can find something to enjoy within.

This is not the original recording of the album. This is infact the version recorded with Spymob doing live instrumentation. The original version of the album wasn't released in America, but in Europe. It featured more of the synth-heavy sound that the Neptunes were known for. That version of the album was set to come out in the states back in 2001, but was pushed back and re-recorded. That re-recorded version is what is available here. So to those of you ordering this, do not be fulled into thinking you're finding the original verion for a good price, cause it's not that. The original version is rare nowadays, there is a listing for it on amazon though. The two copies available go for no less than $56...unfortunately.
NoOne Ever Really Dies.......2006-06-12
In Search Of...is a great hip hop record because it does everything your standard hip hop doesn't. And keep in mind, calling this record hip hop is not doing it justice. My label is too simplistic. It's also a little rock, but not rocky enough to be a rock album. There is classic Neptune sound but also live instruments.
N.E.R.D. have always had a juvenile streak when it came to their lyrics. The bravado is also off-putting. But it's easy to forgive them for these minor infractions because the music just sounds so good.
N.E.R.D. can definitely have a polarizing effect on you: you're jamming to the grooves while wondering why they have to curse so much. Lap Dance is your favorite song on the record, yet you have a problem with them insulting the work of strippers by comparing them to dirty politicians. Tape You is your second favorite song on the album, yet you roll your eyes at the notion that Pharrell seems to think every woman is a conversation and a cocktail away from wanting a threesome. You love Rock Star, but recognize with a chuckle that N.E.R.D. are the tough guy posers they're bashing.
Nevertheless, In Search Of is an album of great music that sounds different from the rest. It has "classic" written all over it.
Also, am I the only one who believes Baby Doll was an inspiration for Outkast's Hey Ya?

YO I THINK NERD IS A VERY INVENTIVE DISC THAT ECLIPSES THE OTHERS WHOM TRIED TO CAPITOLIZE ON THE RAP/ROCK FUSION TREND IN THE LATE 1990'S. THAT'S WHAT SEPERATE NERD FROM THE KID ROCK'S AND FRED DURST'S OF THE WORLD. WITH CATCHY HOOKS AND GREAT BEAT LAID THEY'VE SHOWN THAT GOT SOMETHING TO PROVE TO THE WORLD AS ARTIST AND PRODUCERS.
