How Sweet It Is.......2007-05-11
Great Music,if you like the oldies. The first three songs on the disc were the most familier to me, but the whole disc was great. How can you go wrong with voices like theirs
1960s men, folk music, love songs, rock .......2007-04-04
This is a typical Righteous Brothers album. Too much echo but great
music that reflects the times that they were recorded.
Righteous Brothers.......2007-03-29
If you have never heard of the Righteous Brothers, you must know that of the few singers that have a unique voice, this is one of them, they are brilliant. Their songs are timeless, others have tried to sing them, but poorly. It takes talent. They are classic, and forever. "You've lost that loving feeling" will leave you breathless.
The Righteous Brothers.......2007-03-13
They were great then and to listen to those old recordings brings back a lot of great memories. Some of those songs can never been topped.
Looking for good music.......2006-07-07
These are some of the best love songs of all times, but the recording lacks clarity.

His beginnings as a violinist long behind him, Chicago-born Andrew Bird has been sculpting ever more complex and convincing musical worlds since his first album in 1997. On his fifth release, Bird offers up no answers to the mysteries in the world around us, but does take on the thornier elements with poetic verve. The instrumentation is bracingly inventive, but never for mere shenanigans or showmanship. The songs are each a perfectly formed vignette. And he's a world class whistler; not the loud summoning blast, but the supple and nuanced vibrato-laced melodicism of a master. There is no shortage of utterly riveting songs here. They work their magic on their own believable terms, without a hint of cloying nostalgia or riff-fueled seduction. - David Greenberger
Album Description
Andrew Bird is a previously unimaginable combination of songwriter, violinist, guitarist, vocalist and whistler. His unfailingly unique and striking music has been dumbfounding us for years. Bird's first studio album in nearly two years, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, is his second on Righteous Babe Records. The album follows Weather Systems, his critically-acclaimed mini-LP, released in spring 2003.
The recording sessions for Mysterious Production saw Bird scrap the album three times and travel between studios in Chicago, Los Angeles and his own home studio on a farm in Northern Illinois. The album took final shape with the production help of David Boucher, whose credits include Paul Westerberg, Lisa Loeb, and Randy Newman. Bird plays most of the instruments on Mysterious Production, and is joined by a handful of special guests complimenting his already lush sonic palette. The results are magnificent, a powerhouse of a record dealing with nothing less than the mysteries of childhood, creativity and modern science - epic in scope and minute in detail.
Equally impressive is Bird's solo live show at which, with the aid of a sampling pedal, the songwriter takes his often dense, orchestrated recordings and rewrites them anew each night, adding hypnotic layers of instruments to his vocals and other-worldly whistling - you have to see it to believe it.
Customer Reviews:
Playful and rich.......2007-01-16
This album really comes alive with repeat listens. Look up "Sovay" and you'll find that it refers to "traditional English folk song about a young woman who dresses as a highwayman in order to test her lover" (Wikipedia). Re-listening to the song in that context gives it another layer, but the richness and layers aren't needed to appreciate the gentle vocals, lilting whistling and healthy doses of violin. Track 3 ("A Nervous Tic...") is catchy enough that you'll find yourself whistling along. The rhymes (six rhymes in three lines, all matching "swapping your blood with formaldehyde" in "Fake Palindromes") and metaphor ("so we're taking all our myths to the bank") will keep bringing you back if the lush instrumentation doesn't.
Like this album? Try listening to the Kings of Convenience--they're mellower but worthwhile.
Such smart music it makes feel lesser........2006-12-02
This album holds such diverse music! It varies from the upbeat sound of "Fake Palindromes" to the slower sound of "Master Fade". I randomly ran across this album at Best Buy and bought it based on the album art. It looked interesting enough and I was right. This album has been very good to me over the years.
intricate and satisfying.......2006-11-04
This is an album worth listening to just for the beautiful carefully-orchestrated melodies, and also an album worth just reading for its poetry.
The instrumentation is delicate, layered, modest and surprising. Whistling solos suddenly soar out from the vibes/violin/keyboard/guitar harmonies. Bird playfully juxtaposes folk, orchestrated pop, 60s beat poetry, gypsy rock, jazz.
The lyrics are unexpectedly clever, yet sung gently and offhandedly. Bird's themes tend to be a bit apocalyptic. He gently and gracefully describes how we'll be blown back the 70s (by "the whole board of trustees, all those Don Quixotes") in Sovay, how we destroy ourselves with self-conscious neuroses in Measuring Cups, and what the end of the world will be like in Opposite Day. In Fake Palindromes he gravitates to more of a stream-of-consciousness style, which is brilliantly continued in the interlude at the end of Opposite Day. He throws in a tidbit of gospel in the ending of Masterfade when he sings "when you're lying on the ground / staring up at that inverted compass / I mean Christ who Knows?"
Andrew Bird brings together disparate strands of inspiration from unlikely sources across genres, and the result is uniquely moving. How he is able to so gracefully pull this off is a mystery. One thing we do know though, is that at the end of the world, there will be snacks.
Delights at every turn.......2006-10-08
It's such a pleasure listening to an album unfold, and to an artist gracefully inventing his own idiom. These songs have an unassuming beauty that makes most pop music (including that of artists I genuinely like) seem cliched or overbearing. The musical variety here does not undo the coherence of Bird's sound. A stunning CD. I will make a point to hear him live.
Fantastic .......2006-08-24
My favourite of 2005. Every song is musically complex, layered and interesting - yet so easy on the first listen. The lyrics also appear to be quite simple and whimsical but are actually dense and impenetrable - difficult to fathom without concerted mental effort and a spoonful of intuition. Then you might begin to get some kind of clarity, something may take shape, though still elusive and curious, a puzzle that might not actually have been intended for resolution - perhaps in order to avoid certain classification and inevitable sorting into an appropriately sized shoe-box where it can be neatly stamped "case closed" and pigeon-holed, ah! problem solved!.

With its dedication to Amadou Diallo and its poems covering subjects like reparations, slavery, and Mary J. Blige, Sekou Sundiata sets out to make "poems that are African American as bean pies and be-attitudes."
There's a righteous anger that permeates this disc, but its expression comes off more as a burning coal than a blowtorch--that is, instead of using the staccato rhythms and the relatively harsh vocals of the rappers, Sundiata's approach is more down-tempo, almost elegiac, and his voice is mellifluous, intimate, and warm. Not a huge voice like, say, James Earl Jones; rather, he uses a slow, seductive, clearly enunciated delivery to draw you into his words.
His interest is to write popular verse that functions both as dance music and serious spoken poetry. To him, it's not an either/or, you can do both-you can "dance and be still." While most people won't be dancing to this disc, the music-mostly keyboards, bass, and drum-is coolly competent, and his efforts to make poetry accessible are more than commendable. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
A master poet.......2007-07-27
With Sekou Sundiata's recent death, America lost perhaps one of our greatest living poets, in his fifties and still in his prime. While some traditionalists rejected his work, or attempted to pigeonhole it with the description "spoken word poetry" -- Sundiata preferred, "ritual poet" -- Sundiata demonstrated that poetry was not only alive but relevant. Sundiata's work covered a range of topics, often cleverly combining the political with the social and even the romantic.
An often heard objection to Sundiata's work was his combination of music with poetry. As with any multi-media art, this effort contains considerable risks. However, Sundiata's work does not do this out of whole cloth but draws on a rich tradition of both African and African American culture and works exquisitely.
Anyone with a love of language should give a listen to this great genius, snuffed out too early. He will be missed.
Powerful poetry.......2003-04-14
This cd has quite an unusual sound to it. Sundiata recites poetry while music --
mostly hip-hop, blues and funk (and a didjeridoo in track 9!) -- plays in the background.
Although a lot of the rhythms are funky, this is definitely not a record to dance or
to sit back and relax to-- the imagery is complicated and actually requires intellectual
concentration. The lyrics are often highly political and provocative, which I find
refreshing, especially since Sundiata is an accomplished poet, who can play with
words to create original and powerful images.
Sundiata tells it like it is.......2001-07-17
Sekou Sundiata describes his work as "rhythm and news"; taking the beats of the street and using them as a backdrop for his poetry. Captivating and engaging songs tell the story of the African American people...
Sundiata's music echoes these sentiments. Whether a poem about slavery of the past or street life of the present, each one holds many striking truths. His style of layering spoken word over R&B and jazz with smooth vocals makes his work appealing accross many age groups and backgrounds. Fans of R&B, jazz, soul, folk rock, and poetry alike will embrace Sudiata's message; we can't live our lives today without remembering how we got here.
Perfect Blend.......2001-06-30
I've read the negative reviews of Sundiata's albums, and I can understand how his art is not for everybody. Nevertheless, if you are looking for something more from today's fairly shallow popular musical scene, the work of Sekou Sundiata is an excellent place to turn. His poetry blends perfectly with the music and draws the listener into the tribal rythm of his voice and the pulsing funk/blues accompaniment. I recently saw Sundiata open at an Ani Difranco show and his live performance is equally strong. An artist in all respects, Sundiata brings his message to the masses in a form that both pleases and inspires. For those who don't readily associate with poetry, the accompaniment offers an alternative in understanding the pieces on this album. I would highly recommend the work, but would suggest that you listen to some other more (but not quite) mainstream artists before attempting this sonic journey into the heart of Black America.
Another unlistenable entry.......2000-07-09
Frought with the same kinds of musical mistakes as his first record. Combining poetry with music is always tricky business. A lot of people think it looks awkward, and more times than not, a lot of poets don't nail down the right music for their messgae. Sundiata continually hits us with stock folk/blues music that doesn't seem to go anywhere on its own, and the poetry suffers for it.

Given these tumultuous times, one would expect Ani DiFranco to confront strife head-on, but on this, her 18th album, she tunnels beneath the headlines toward deeper emotional, psychic, and institutional conflicts and causes. She begins by channeling her inner Joni Mitchell, pouring out a quartet of jazzy confessions lightly dusted with electronica, musique concrete, and keyboard drone, but urged forward by Todd Sickafoose's warm acoustic bass. His throbbing, be-bop lines are this spare but somehow atmospheric album's musical soul. As DiFranco's voice bobs and weaves around those rhythms, the personal poetry makes the politics hit harder--and vice versa. She celebrates marginalia and makes peace with a world in flux. She conveys the heat of across-the-café infatuations and grows anxious over her subconscious desires. When she locks her sights on contemporary culture, she sends a scattershot spray against celebrity cults, network news, biotechnology, Yucca Mountain, stolen elections and, of course, patriarchy. But she's a gifted enough poet and musician to keep the album from collapsing into radical rhetoric and psychobabble. The spoken-word title track begins in Hiroshima and ends in a declaration that feminism is not about equality but about "reprieve"--an amnesty from fear and hate, in other words, and an affirmation of life. In the context of a death-driven culture, her decision to bear children, "to split herself in two," becomes the most "radical thing you can do." None of her manifestos, however, would ring true if it weren't for her imaginative, even playful singing and her ever-more accomplished acoustic guitar playing, sometimes classically graceful, sometimes purely urgent. --Roy Kasten
Album Description
Every new album from Ani DiFranco gives listeners a reason to get excited about music all over again, and her latest, Reprieve, is certainly no exception. Across 12 tracks, DiFranco ignites more of her signature blend of poetry, politics and musicianship.
Ani and touring bassist Todd Sickafoose are the only two players on the new album - something you'd never guess from it's rich and detailed sound. In addition to the usual array of acoustic and electric guitars, Ani can be heard on keyboards, drums, and other instruments, while Todd contributes bass, wurlitzer, pump organ, piano and "fakey-bakey" trumpet and strings.
The album was tracked in her New Orleans studio in early 2005 during a break in her usually heavy touring schedule. Forced to leave the master recordings behind before Hurricane Katrina, she drove back into the city to retrieve them just three days after the levees broke. From there she headed back to overdub in her hometown of Buffalo with whatever instruments happened to be on hand.
Between the evacuation and the time off the road, Ani found herself concentrating on the process of recording to a degree she had never done before, and the resulting album is the clearest demonstration yet of her talents as a producer. Unconstrained by the pressures of touring, she was able to take her time with the record, and the end result is an overall sound that is clear and succinct.
While not intended to be taken as a concept album, the songs on Reprieve do provide a cohesive picture of what's been on Ani's mind during turbulent times on the personal, cultural, and global front.
Ani describes Reprieve as rooted in the Crescent City, and there's a direct reference to that town in the album's centerpiece, "Millennium Theater." The line "New Orleans bides her time" in the middle of this scathing critique of the current Republican regime might sound like a response to Hurricane Katrina, but in fact the song was written well before the disaster that has devastated the city, about a crisis that took no one but the presidential administration by surprise. Like just about everything else on Reprieve, "Millennium Theater" finds Ani speaking her mind, singing from her heart, and playing music like her lifelike all of our livesdepended on it.
Customer Reviews:
Ani at her most boring.......2007-07-02
One thing I always admired about Ani is that with each album she's not afraid to try something different. From her early coffee shop folk days to her jazzy period to now, one can never expect the same thing from our favorite Righteous Babe.
Unfortunately, Ani misses her mark on this album. Ani's a great lyricist, but here she focuses too much on the lyrics, leaving the melodies to be BORING! She plucks only a few notes on her guitar throughout the songs, as if she's only trying to create some background ambiance and nothing more. You'll enjoy the album more if you just read the lyrics and not listen to the CD at all...which is maybe what Ani wants you do to.
I would recommend you buy "Knuckle Down," "Evolve," or "Not a Pretty Girl" instead.
At her best.......2007-03-21
Reprieve is Difranco's best work yet. She is at her poetical and musical prime. Songs like "Millennium Theater" are a call for Americans to get out of their cocoons and wake up to what's going on with a corrupt corporate controlled government. Not a filler song on this one. The CD artwork is superb as well.
decidedly depressing.......2007-01-24
In music years, Ani DiFranco is old; Reprieve-her 18th album with her own label Righteous Babe Records-is a decidedly depressing step in what has been a sometimes-rocky aging process. In all honesty, listening to Reprieve made me sad more than anything else, not least because at her best Ani is so brilliant. Here is Ani without the eloquence, without the poetry, without the originality, and, more than anything else, without the raw energy. The sparkle is smothered beneath a somber, glutinous collection of songs, and even when her lyrics are beautiful, Ani herself sounds detached and exhausted, her vocal prowess hidden in a cacophony of electronica. Much of the album sounds a little uneasy, as though Ani is uncomfortable with her own experimentation but equally unable to re-embrace her acoustic roots. There is also an odd, dissonant, randomness that transcends simple ambient noise; on one track there is a recurring sound as if someone in the studio turned on a static radio in the background.
One of my favorite things about Ani is her easy, playful way with words, but it's tough going on Reprieve. In the song "Nicotine" she sings, "you sang that song in my ear/and it tickled those tiny hairs." In another, "Subconscious," appears the line, "Sealed windows, forced air/gazillions of cell phones/beaming through my hair." Things get a little better later on-the title track (also the token poem) is full of interesting, darkly lyrical moments, and spoken over a decidedly eerie little guitar part. It is here, though, that I find what really bothers me most about the album as a whole; it is all of the discontent with none of the fight, none of her spirit. Perhaps Ani sums up my review best in the chorus of "Subconscious." "I ain't in the best shape/that I've ever been in/but I know where I'm going/it ain't where I've been." Ani, I admit I am still pretty attached to where you've been.
Beautiful.......2007-01-09
This is one of Ani's "quieter" albums, but every single song is simply beautiful. If you want to just relax and listen to some gorgeous melodies and Ani's profound lyrics, this is the album to pop in the cd player.
her best in years.......2007-01-05
i'm a huge ani fan, have been for over 10 years and i own everything she's done. this is her best work in years - a little bit of everything that makes her amazing. it's political, creative, sentimental and beautiful to listen to.

Album Description
Critically acclaimed composer, singer and violinist Andrew Bird quietly soars to new heights with his first Righteous Babe release. This lush, gorgeous collection of 7 original songs, his own adaptation of a Galway Kinnell poem, and a Handsome Family cover showcases Bird's gift for conveying subtle emotional states through music. In addition to his signature violin (which he often plays like a guitar), the virtuoso instrumentalist employs glockenspiel, organ, whistling, and tape loops to set the scene for the intimate, haunting stories he tells through his lyrics. Bowl of Fire bandmates Kevin O'Donnell (drums, percussion, glockenspiel) and Nora O'Connor (vocals, guitar) accompany Bird, and producer Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Will Oldham) crafts a stunning, almost orchestral setting for the recording. Also included on the disc is an 8-minute Quicktime film on the making of the record by director Robert Trondson.
Customer Reviews:
A wonder.......2006-03-29
Sparse and fascinating. The lyrics of the aptly named opening song conjures up images of boys, frogs, fiddles, and cornfields under open skies. The album flows seamlessly from track to track until climaxing in the beautiful Handsome Family cover, "Don't Be Scared." This isn't Bowl of Fire, though Kevin O'Donnel and Nora O'Connor lend their talents. Nor is it folk, rock, pop or anything else you've heard before. The etherial blend of violin, whistle, glockenspiel and vocals is otherworldly, baroque (yet distinctly midwestern, to my ear - a musical Fargo). Turn the lights low, the stereo up, and allow yourself to be absorbed into Bird's strange little world.
andrew bird is drunk on words when he's not whistling in the tradition of his surname.......2005-10-04
(DISCLAIMER: I have a serious soft spot for the male voice, for male singer/songwriters who tap their soul in their words and notes.) In the swoon of an Andrew Bird interview on NPR this spring (2005), I helplessly followed my fingers to the keyboard to order "Weather Systems" and "Mysterious Appearance of Eggs". Then to my doorstep came -- omygod -- lyrics so word-drunk, smart and mysterious, crooned & whispered & belted out in a voice soooooo alluring, accompanied by completely out-of-the-box musical arrangements involving whistling and electric violin... The artwork on the liner notes, particularly in the case of Mysterious Appearance of Eggs, ratchets the irresistability of this singer's work up another couple of notches right off the scale.
andrew bird is fantastic.......2005-09-02
though the mysterious production of eggs is my favorite, andrew bird never fails to impress or please. if youre looking for mellow, but also moving, go for it! you wont be dissapointed!
Simply Captivating.......2005-03-16
A while back I was attending a show in Columbia, Missouri, to see Vic Chesnutt and Andrew Bird was the opener. I had never heard anything like the music that Andrew offered the audience that night. In fact, I was so blown away by Andrew's performance, that I hardly paid attention to Vic! I purchased the Weather Systems CD from Andrew that evening and have been in love with it ever since. There is an ethereal quality to the music on this CD that has to be heard to be appreciated, any words that I would use here to describe it would not do it any justice at all. A stand out, for me, is the third track, "Lull." The lyrics combined with the completely enchanting music speak to the soul. I highly recommend this CD, you will not be disappointed in the quality of Andrew Bird's amazing talent.
Beautiful Music for the Midwest.......2005-02-14
I love this album. At first I didn't really did know why I liked it, but now I do. I live in rural Northwest Illinois and thats where Andrew Bird recorded this album. It paints a really beautiful picture of the midwest. Im not saying that somebody from another location wouldn't like this album, because it is really excelent music, but the reason why I love this album so much is because I feel a common bond with Andrew Bird in living in the same environment.

The mannered vocal style that has always been the most off-putting element of Ani DiFranco's music is still present on this two-disc live set, but for some reason it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe it's the way you can hear DiFranco using her breaths to accent a rhythm section that's downright merciless with its circling, pulsing, scary grooves. Or maybe it's the way, with an audience screaming, she pours heart and soul into "Unforgettable Face" and the story song "Gravel." Whatever, Living in Clip is the album where DiFranco begins to deserve her hype. And "Amazing Grace," backed by the Buffalo Philharmonic, is where she surpasses it. --David Cantwell

Uneven but still a good live work........2006-09-01
I think that this cd is over rated as a stunning live cd...its good but not that fantastic. She does do an amazing rendition of "Amazing Grace".
AS GOOD AS IT GETS.......2006-08-15
Nothing much to say more about this double, live album really: great voice, great guitar playing, a lot of passion (from the "urge to rock" to funny stories to "melodramatic" revelations to social cosciousnesses), wonderful band (the outstanding Sara Lee at the bass and Andy Stochansky at the drums), perfect production, beautiful booklet.
The most recommended of her albums (and of all albums of '90ies indeed).
as intense and deep as u can get!.......2006-07-16
This is the real thing performed with joy and depth by a
woman who was born do do nothing else.
A superb showcase for Ani's singing,guitar playing,and
overall stage mastery that is not to be missed. On this effort
she is using a crackling, popping backup band that is enjoying the performance along with her.
One of the best live albums you have heard in a long time--
both in musicianship and sound quality.
If you are an established fan of Ms Difranco, this will have you clapping with glee.If you are not---you will be after you
give this one a listen.I fall into the latter catagory. This was my first experience with Ani's music.rest assured it will
not be my last.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Absolutely essential .......2006-04-02
Ani Difranco is, to say the least, an extremely prolific artist. I can say I've been a fan for a good chunk of years now and I *still* don't have all her albums. She's a rare breed in that she's an artist that seems to release an album at least once a year (if not more frequently) and I love that about her. With Ani it is truly all about her craft, she could care less about the big wigs and the commercialism of the music business. Since what, 1989-1990(?) she's been on her *own* label, (Righteous Babes Records) & done everything herself with a select group of trusted folks. In other words, A)she's far from a sell out B)She knows what shes doing, and she LOVES what she's doing
Living In Clip is **ESSENTIAL** for anyone who appreciates Ani's music. Whether you're a long time fan or someone who's only just recently stumbled upon her greatness. It has so many amazing, classic Ani songs...and even better, it's LIVE so you can literally hear her in action- with an audience, catch a bit of goofy banter & Ani-ness all at once.
The music is great here. Some of the songs are jazzed up, an old time favorite from the early 90's "Both Hands" is wonderfully remastered with a backing orchestra and it sounds amazing.
Ani is not your typical artist/musician. Some artists are "music-musicians", and some are more concerned with the words and the messages conveyed. Ani is both and she does it all so effortlessly. Her songs aren't sweet little 4 minute pieces with a chorus and an A major melody. She actually has something to say, and one way or another she gets you to listen.
Long time fans love Ani for her frankness, her fierce and sometimes snarly voice that she uses in so many different ways. She can do a melancholic jazz song--from playing the instruments to singing the notes. She can whip out an accordian and string words together like nobody's business and turn it all into an upbeat funky song, (like a lot of those on Little Plastic Castle). Bottom line, she's all about variation, being a dynamic performer...holding people's attention.
This double disc live set is her at the top of her game, putting critics in their place and giving us all a damn good set of songs in the process.
"Gravel", "Willing To Fight", "Untouchable Face", "Shameless", "Both Hands", "Firedoor", "Shy", "Napolean", "Out of Habit".... All of these are CLASSIC Ani, but of course don't skip over the rest of the songs cuz they're great too.
Shattering Great.......2006-03-10
I have I think ALL or almost all of Ani's albums, and I am a huge fan, but this is one of the best albums she has put out. Well, truthfully, I like them all, but anyway, in this one you really get her great LIVE sound which is slightly different than her studio sound. Ani in concert is AMAZING and this gives you a glimpse into that world. You'll love her silliness and her fierce gut-wrenching renditions of her most famous songs. Listen from start to finish for a real thrill or put your favorites on your ipod. The energy on the album is wonderful. I think this is a great introduction to her music if you've never heard it. If you are already a fan, you will LOVE this one!!! Oh, and in case you've never heard her, she is kind of folk/rock/punk/funk even jazzy at times. Listen to the clips provided or check out www.righteousbabe.com. Every album has a different flavor.

Following up two of her strongest records, Not a Pretty Girl and Out of Range, Dilate takes a different tack. It's quieter and more lush than previous efforts but just as intensely personal, with songs like "Untouchable Face" that are easier to identify with than many other DiFranco tunes. At the same time, DiFranco's old fans might not recognize the sound here, especially on tracks like the trip-hop-influenced "Amazing Grace," the shuffling "Napoleon," or the indescribable "Shameless"--this isn't the same thrash-folkie of old. There's a lot to like on Dilate, especially if you're a fan of Portishead or Lisa Germano, but it takes some getting used to. After spending time with the album, you may find it as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans, but you also might find out that the jeans never really fit quite right. --Randy Silver

Dilated Angst.......2007-04-11
I don't know anyone who doesn't relate to the angst and anger demonstrated on Ani's Dilate album. This album helped me channel many demons over the years. Most notably, "Untouchable Face" which somehow tapped into almost everyone's conciousness. The whole album is fulled of punch and pissiness from "Superhero" (I used to be a Superhero, I would swoop down and save me from myself/ and you were like a phone booth that I somehow stumbled into/ and now I am just like everyone else), all cleverly written, all acoustically and powerfully performed. I've tried other Ani CD's but Dilate is to me her crowned achievement. Even covering "Amazing Grace" with a very pissy mood to it, the "Napoleon" bitch fest about the record business, and a lot of moody broken heart love songs. Dilate is genius and even all these years later I can't stop playing it.
Folk/Trip-Hop/Ambient crossover aspect works so well..........2006-09-07
Ani, you outdid yourself on this one. Your heart beats in the languid grooves and has me on the verge of tears everytime this disc spins, down through the years. And that stands for something!

The irony of why I love this CD just makes it that much better..........2006-06-21
I never heard any Ani DiFranco music before I met my ex-boyfriend, so I didn't really know much about her. He was really into folk music, so he gave me this disc to listen to. Well I fell in love with her music right away. It was bouncy and fun, and lyrically it was like nothing else I had ever heard before. I love her style and how she paints a perfect picture with her words, so I was hooked. Well the ironic part is I swear either all guys are the same, or she was singing about my ex 99% of the time. I have never related more to a song before I heard the title track 'Dilate'. It became an anthem for a while, and when I hear it now 3 years later I start laughing to myself because it still feels so amazingly spot on.... "you are so lame, you always disappoint me, it's kind of like our running joke, except it's really not funny, and I just want you to live up to the image of you I've created, I see you and I'm so unsatisfied, I see you and I dilate"... "When I say you sucked my brain out, the English translation is I am in love with you and it is no fun".... I don't know, it's like she was in my head, and just had a better way of expressing exactly how I felt. Most of the songs had something about them that rang true to me, not just on this album though, the live disc 'Living in Clip' had many of the same songs and then some others that also seemed to be narrating my life at the time.
Anyway her music is great, even if you aren't in a crazy relationship. However if you are, this is music that might just help you get your strength back, I know at times I would listen to it religiously because there was something so comforting about it, maybe it was just because she does a better job of expressing her anger and frustration. It felt like I could just put a song on for him and make him understand how I felt, but of course it never worked out that way.
Anyway the irony of who turned me on to her music will forever make me smile, and when I listen to it now it is just a great reminder of how good I have it with my husband to be. For those who just appreciate honest music created by a talented poet and musician this album should not disappoint.

This is my favorite album of all time. It helped me through a really difficult time in 1996 and I still listen to it over and over again now. I love the way she tells her stories in her music and almost every song on this album still gives me chills almost 10 years later!

As she's gone from the Young Woman Who Could to the Woman Who Has, Ani DiFranco has explored more than her share of musical styles, all the while remaining true to her core. Even during her most extreme departures, you could hear the sound of the early albums coming through. On Little Plastic Castle, an album on which people are credited for adding pontifications, incantations, and an "evil machine" to songs, you could--for the first time--hear an almost completely new artist. Call her Ani, version 3; she couldn't have existed without hearing all of Ani, version 1's albums, and she wouldn't be as funky and experimental without the influence of Ani, version 2. She still has a lot to say--about politics, about relationships, about herself--but the messages aren't thrown in your face here (well, not as often). Instead they're wrapped in funky hooks and lots of production--anything you learn from DiFranco on this album will come from pure repetition, and for the first time, the album is varied enough, catchy enough, and subtle enough that you'll push the repeat button while cleaning the house. --Randy Silver

Still the one to beat.......2005-12-08
Like some others who've posted here, I'm not necessarily an Ani-holic, but I have huge respect for her honesty and integrity, and the way she ran her career from a completely outsider approach into what is now a time-honored creative dynasty. She's not someone I listen to constantly, but I return to her regularly for a fix of the kind of blunt and exhilarating earnestness she represents.
That being said, I've always felt that after a certain point she just made too damn many CDs, so that at times musically she covered the same ground again and again. Try making a compilation sometime of your favorite Ani songs and you'll realize quickly just how many have the same tempo, the same key, the same basic structure and feel but (and this is the difference that saves them) new thoughts in the lyrics.
But LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE probably is the best combination of all of Ani's best instincts along with the greatest variety in style, tempo and overall musical creativity. She also achieved a kind of unusual level of spontanteous vocal excitement on this album where she sounds even more intense and exuberant than her usual standard (which is always pretty intense!).
For me, this album and IMPERFECTLY are her two finest efforts, although I love many things scattered throughout all the rest of the CDs. If you are not already an Ani fan, this CD may be the best way "in," since if you don't like this one, I can't imagine you could generate much affection for Ani, who is so exuberantly accessible here.
A fun, thoughtful, serious, and eye-opening album!!!.......2004-08-01
Background info before writing this review will probly help Ani fans reading it. I'm not an Ani fan in the sense of agreeing with all her messages and supporting the things she does. I am a fan, however, who admires her outspoken honesty. She knows exactly what she feels, thinks, and believes and isn't one bit afraid to put it out there & in your face. That takes guts, more power to her. This world we live in (especially this country, USA) could greatly benefit from exercising her unapologetic frankness.
This was the first album I got by Ani, and I have to say my favorite to date. Personally, I'm an eclectic & enjoy ALL music (I tend to stay mainstream [not Britney Spears-type, though], but enjoy many types of music). When I first heard Miss DiFranco, I was really quite turned off by her sound. A friend of mine had been playing her music in the car on our trips & activities, and I almost couldn't stomach it. She played Revelling/Reckoning, To The Teeth, Evolve, and probably Dilate. I just remember thinking "What is this???" Ani has a musical style all her own, very raw and real. I suppose my ears were just so used to sugar-sweet candy pop that I was somewhat disgusted. But even 'alternative' rock like death metal & all that don't have anything on her; she's got something that so many other artists, whether or not I like them, don't have.
Anyway, back to the task at hand: reviewing "Little Plastic Castle." I'm pretty sure the reason I like it so much is it is probably one of the more musically melodic albums she has out. What I mean is someone who is used to pop and things like that would probably do well to buy this CD as their first Ani album because it's closest to what they know. It's very effective in that way because it tunes the pop listner in by using sounds they can handle while presenting very deep messages and opinions that aren't so popular like the sound they are carried by.
Listening to number 1, the title track, really made me step back and think how boring things can get as far as the music industry and TV, etc. Some lyrics from that song are: "In a coffe shop / in a city / which is every coffe shop / in every city / on a day which is every day / I pick up a magazine / which is every magazine / read a story and forget it right away" She has a very good point here about how the media (TV, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines, etc) train us to know what is 'normal,' and keep spoonfeeding us those stereotypes.
The lyrics to song 2, "Fuel," are hard-hitting & heavy. They talk about racism (slavery), politics, and many other things. It's a very good song to sit & ponder because at the end of it she sums all of her scenarios up by describing them each one as "a fire just waiting for fuel." One of my favorites!
Track 5 is good, "Two Little Girls." It's sad and dark but it's a good listen, it compells me all the way through each time.
I reccomend this CD highly because it helped me break out of the pop mindset, even though I was eclectic I never really understood how narrowminded I was musically (as well as politically, etc). Go for it! Do your best swan dive into the bold, bold world of Ani DiFranco.
Different and Not to be missed.......2004-06-18
This was Ani DiFranco's first really synthesized, fancily-produced album. And it's a whole different world from the style she was known for before this. Listening to this is definitely like being introduced to a whole new artist. There are more electronics, more experimental song styles, and even her voice has changed a little -- it's a tad raspier.
The lyrics are still just as good -- but don't buy it expecting the old Ani ... you have to love it as something completely new.
And I DID love it!
The songs are made not more watery, but more powerful by the elaborate compositions. The topics capture so many sides of life -- from the pretty to the dark.
One song urges rude people to "just suck up and be nice".
Another song, whose entire atmosphere tells of a desperate hour proclaims, "If you think you know what I'm doing wrong, you're gonna have to get in line."
GRAVEL has a catchy, hardcore beat and really gets across the humor in having an ex that you just seem to keep taking back, no matter what he does.
And it all leads up to the climax -- the final song -- that is more of a hypnotic symphony than a song. It only has a few spoken words -- the rest it says in its swaying rhythm -- but it is absolutely powerful. An expected pinnacle.
The first song or two on the album are just warm-ups. Skip past them to really delve into the riches of this outstanding record.
This album is not to be missed by anyone who likes true-to-the-heart, poignant, powerful experimental music.
A solid album from Ani..........2004-05-10
To me this is a solid album from Ani... It's also my first one that I've bought/owned by Ani - got lucky and picked it up in a 2nd hand store (thought it's definitely worth full price)...
Musicwise, 'Two Little Girls' and 'Swan Dive' is my two favorite tracks, though I like them all at varying degrees of enjoyment... As well as I like that it doesn't sound exactly the same from... So after listening to this one, I'm looking forward to one day picking up "Not A Pretty Girl"... Plus, I'm very impressed that Ani performed at the "Women March for Choice" on March 20, 2004... - Savannah Skye...
This one never pulled me in..........2004-03-28
I own Not A Pretty Girl, Dilate, and this album by Ani Difranco. While I thouroughly enjoy the first two--Little Plastic Castle never pulled me in at all really. I've given it numerous listens and still I don't think it remotely compares to the other two albums I own by her. The only song that sticks out to me is "Gravel" and even that song I am having trouble recollecting exactly in my mind. I suggest the other two if you are a starting Ani fan. I must admit I'm surprised by the overwhelming popularity of this one.

RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS .......2007-04-30
I GAVE THIS CD A 3,I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE CD MOST OF THE SONGS WERE NEVER HITS FOR THEM.
Great Album.......2007-04-04
I really love this collection of the Righteous Brothers. Good quality and great selection.
All the Righteous Brothers in One Place........2007-03-17
I've been a fan of the Righteous Brothers since I first heard them on AM Radio and saw them on TV. I've yet to see a "Best Of" collection worthy of their library, until now. The sound is excellent, a major improvement over the older collections. I might like to hear more of Bill Medley's solo career, such as the album he did with Michel Columbier in the '70s. Overall there is a good representation of Bill and Bobby's solo work. I highly recommend this collection to any real fan of their work.
Only 4 stars?!? How can that be????.......2007-01-16
Anyone familiar with the music of the Righteous Brothers would be hard-pressed not to acknowledge their contributions. Their voices, individually and in tandem, the songs of Mann and Weil and Goffin and King, the productions of Spector and even their recycling of others' tunes, added an indelible dimension to the popular music of the era. No other voice of the classic rock era save maybe Gene Pitney can break you down as does Bobby Hatfield's rendition of "Unchained Melody". The sweeping power of "He", the pathos of "Soul and Inspiration", the impassioned realization of the beginning of the end of a love in "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - call it soul, call it emotion - it is powerful stuff. So how can it be that this set garners only a 4-star rating? As good as it is, it actually could have been even better. This is not a reflection of the performances but of the compilers. Credit where credit is due however, to the folks at Universal Music for loading up the set with 48 tracks gleaned from virtually all phases of the Righteous Brothers' career including some of their individual recordings besides their work as a duo. And therein lies the "fault", if one can be found. While the solo sides of Hatfield on Verve and Medley on MGM are welcome indeed, only those that fall under the Universal ownership umbrella are here. Medley's later 80's recordings on Liberty and Planet are absent - a decision on Universal's part to avoid licensing issues. This is a very minor omission given the quality and quanity of what is offered in the package. Putting this minor quibble in perspective, maybe a truer rating would be 4 and 9/10 stars. If not "perfect", this piece does outdo all its predecessors including the Rhino anthology of the late 80's both in quantity and scope. There are innumerable Righteous Brothers compilation discs available but to get any depth to their contributions, go for this piece. While some may take issue with certain aspects of the sonic presentation here, it is not enough to demote the set overall. Most of the tracks appear in stereo and "Soul and Inspiration" is represented by its slightly longer version. Minor reservations aside, no CD collection of the music of the era can be without the Righteous Brothers and this piece is the best to come along so far.
Worth the money.......2007-01-03

Ani DiFranco's fondness for cheeky self-effacement marks her fourth album, Not a Pretty Girl. Having redefined our whole concept of cult following, the funky, punky singer/songwriter has parlayed her prowess for six-string blues guitar into an unique alternative acoustic sound. This album marks real growth for the musician. Songs like the title track or "Worthy" are more fully realized than many of her earlier pieces that lean toward artful scat or spare guitar and vocal arrangements. It also precedes DiFranco's more experimental work, a characteristic recurrent with increasing frequency on subsequent recordings. --Nick Heil

two and a half.......2006-07-29
We are all pretty familiar with the concept of over-acting. You know, like Al Pacino in Scarface. But is it possible to "over-sing." I think it is, and I'd argue Ani does it in every single song she's ever written. "eaaarggAh! OhheeeeOO!, UyayayayayEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" Probably it does the trick if you're PMSing real bad, but as a dude I have a little trouble relating. For a while I thought she had bad lyrics. But then I tried just reading them straight up and realized hey they are totally decent, it's just the vocals that make them tough to stomach. Shakespeare would probably be bad if you said, "the-e-e-ea-a-a- quAAliteee-e-e-e-eEEEEEE of mer cy is not STRAYEEEYYAAAYYEEEAYYEEEAAAAAAnedahugooooh!...." That said, even though they aren't bad perse, they are sort of annoying. I don't like coffee houses, or people who frequent them. Which seems to be sort of the Ani universe. On the other hand, if you like to get an expresso before catching the subway downtown to catch the Innercity Radical Anarchocommunist Existential Collective's screening of their latest short film about transgender intellectual insurgents in the world of independent media publishing in Seattle, where you'll meet a group of girls wearing different colored socks and quirky glasses, and at least one radical photographer named Jeremy, with whom you plan to go backpacking this weekend on a scenic trail where you'll write obsessively about yourself in a journal, all the while missing the amazing plants and animals because you don't know anything about nature except that you hate corporations who want to destroy it, and you're too busy journalling about the flaky dudes you sleep with, plus your parents were hippies and you're exactly like them and not original at all, you'll probably totally dig the vibe here.
On to the positives, Ani is a great guitarist. I dig her style, and wish she was a little more guitar-based and less vocal based, because this is really where she stands out in the singer-songwriter genre. She doesn't just lay down some simple chords, she works the strings, and she has skills. Actually, if she stopped singing, and got someone else to sing while she wrote the music, I think she'd probably be great.
Also, she should get someone else to produce these albums. You have to turn all her albums way up to hear anything but her voice.
If you like her voice though, this would probably be a 5 star album.
A little out there just to be out there, but worth it.......2006-02-23
I don't know, maybe it's me but I get a little "activism-for-the-sake-of-activism" from this album... Or maybe "shock-value-for-the-sake-of-shock-value"... But that doesn't stop it from being good most of the time.
Unique and fantastic things she does with a guitar.
my first ani album.......2005-12-16
the queen of do it yourself rock. she owns her own record company. writes and produces her own songs. plays all the instruments and has enough gusto and energy to power a train. i can't say which tracks i like because every time i play this i listen to straight through. plus, she's a hell of a poet. she said the reason she created righteous babe records was because she didn't want to make music the way the big boys did. records like this capture the true spirit of indie rock. it sounds raw, not perfect or polished.
Freakin' Yeah.........2005-10-14

TRUE*PUNK*ROCK*SOUL*SPIRIT.......2005-04-19
In an America where punk is buying more and more into commercilization and mainstream culture, Ani DiFranco is a true-punk-rock-soul-crusader. A unique girl and her accoustic guitar daring to give corporate America the finger is more punk, in my book, than any group of over-pierced, over-tattooed, boys pretending to play power chords on over-distorted guitars. Cheers Ani!
