Although traces of her synthpop roots certainly showed through, Annie Lennox's solo debut, Diva, made it abundantly clear that her new material would veer away from gender-bending robotics of the early Eurythmics sound and continue toward the more emotionally grounded soul of later releases. On Diva, Lennox infuses each song with tenderly perceptive lyrics, hypnotic rhythms, and irresistibly soulful wailings. Her arrangements are clean and simple, utilizing bare instrumentation and sometimes-languid chord work. The singles "Walking on Broken Glass," "Little Bird," and "Why" became radio mainstays, while gems such as the Eastern-influenced dream ballad "Primitive," the hauntingly autobiographical pop-lament "Legend in My Living Room," and the cheerfully satirical "Keep Young and Beautiful" gave the album a plump maturity. --Sally Weinbach

The term "diva" is an honorific to be bestowed, not a title to be claimed. That alone gets Annie Lennox's 1992 solo debut off on the wrong foot. Nor does it help that, instead of following the often-daring path of her former outfit, the Eurythmics, Lennox chose instead to wrap her big, emotional voice in aloof, sophisticated settings rendered primarily on synthesized keyboards. "Why" is a gorgeous ballad about a crumbling relationship, but nothing about the pristine "Walking on Broken Glass" comes close to the danger its title implies. "Precious" offers little beyond lite funk, while "Cold" is studiously icy and distant. Only "Why" and the closing number, "The Gift," achieve the sort of richly detailed intimacy she was obviously reaching for here. So hold off on that diva stuff, Annie. I still enjoy listening to this album 15 years after its release. Annie Lennox really delivered with an outstanding album of 11 tracks. Diva marked the departure from her collaborations with Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and although there's not as much synth-pop on Diva, Lennox's lyrics on her solo work are just as honest and profound (if not more) as they are on her Eurythmics' compositions.

My favourite tracks are "Why" - this has got to be one of the most beautifully written songs of all time. This song is so emotive and one feels Annie's pain, particularly towards the end. Other standouts are "Cold", "Money Can't Buy It", "Precious" and especially, "The Gift".

If the Diva CD doesn't satisfy your hunger for Annie, pick up the Diva DVD, which features a collection of music videos from the album including "Why", "Legend In My Living Room", "Cold", "Money Can't Buy It", "Precious", "The Gift" and "Keep Young and Beautiful". Annie reinvents herself in each video to be consistent with the tone and feelings of each song. It's an absolute must-have for any Annie fan.

Annie Lennox never disapoints, almost all of my favs are on this CD from "why" about a disintegrating relationship. "Money can't buy it" a quest for material things & loss of love, to a very intense "cold" about non-reciprocated love, we can all relate to her material at sometime in our lives, she has an incredible gift to express her heartache/passion &/or pain/joy through her awesome voice & lyrics.

This is the second time that I have bought this album,the first time was when it was originaly released on tape forgot about it until it was featured on a TV show this time i bought on CD still sounds great years later glad I bought!!!!!

The first two tracks are to of my favorites of Annie's especially "Why".
"Why" always reminds me of Ivan on Season 2 of "So, You Think You Can Dance". So, what happen to the rest of the CD? It is as if Annie was thinking "I can't make an album of 2 songs." so, she went to the CD of the latest practice session and stuck it on the back of the 2 songs and called it an album.

Let me put in a disclaimer. I have seen Terisa Griffin perform many times amd there is no better live performer touring now than she. So as I listen to "My Naked Soul" which was purchased at her CD release party, I can't help but listen to it and imagine her in concert. This is a very personal CD (Terisa wrote all of the cuts) and one gets the sense that this music while pleasing to the listener is also catharsis for the artist. My personal favorites: 1) Sunshine, both the original and the remix (Sweet pillow talk from a woman to her man); 2) Love Changed (A soulful and honest expression to a former lover as to why he can't come back); 3) Alright (A new school soulful gospel cut inspired by Psalms 151); 4) One More Fight, One More Try (A passionate final attempt to revive a dying love) and 5) Better Love Yourself (A self confident anthem that reminds women to love themselves, before they try to love anybody else). Though this CD is not as radio accessible as her first mini-CD "Songbird", shame on Chicago radio for sleeping on our homegirl. This CD sounds better and better with each listen. A frequent live duet singer at Soul Legend Jerry "Iceman" Butler concerts, Terisa's in the jazz-soul tradition of Anita Baker, Chaka Khan & Jill Scott. So if you want to take a chance on a professional artist who loves her music and loves her fans buy this CD. And then go to her website to find out where she'll be appearing live and go see her perform. She has a cult following in Chicago and everyone I've recommended her concerts to have all come back with rave reviews.

My Naked Soul.......2007-03-08

I loved this CD. Terisa Griffen has a very wonderful voice and I don't know why she is not more widely known. In Detroit, there is one radio station that plays her song, "Anymore", but they never say who it is. I heard it about four times before a friend of mine went online while it was playing on the radio and found out who it was. I immediately went on the internet to find the album and purchased it. I have no regrets.

This cd gives you just a little bit of every thing. I have enjoyed it so much after hearing the "Song Bird" cd I had to get this one. Pure enjoyment is all I can say, and the Ms. Griffin's live show is even better! I'm ready for the next cd!

GREAT, GREAT,.......2005-09-28

This is talent. Every cut is great, I got this used about 3 years back, and then my sis (Lady E, thanks I love you!) mailed me the other CD of hers. I love her music, sangin, and lyrics. I just wish she would have gotten more love, but perhaps she is happy writing songs, and collecting big checks. Anyway she is GREAT, the CD is wonderful. It's R&B, jazz, blues...all mixed up! What a great CD this is. Can not wait for another CD from Mack Diva!

I've found a part of myself that I'd left behind..........2005-01-22

When I ended a long term relationship a few years ago, I lost access to hearing and vibing to this CD. As I was looking through my musical collection, I found my "Rise" CD single. That reminded me how much I missed The Mack Diva. So, I set out to find her...and alas, with success I found a copy of this out of print treasure. It is just as meaningful and viable today as it was back in 1996. So don't sleep...get a copy if you can!

Sandra St Victor stands for quality. Her voice and her songs are very expressive. She used to be the singer of the Family Stand and wrote songs for Paula Abdul, Prince and others. Sandra is also still performing. The known singles here are "Chocolate" and "Mack Diva". If you don't know Sandra, try her out now :)

She sung & wrote for Chaka Khan. She basically wrote all Paula Abdul hit records. She was the voice of the Family Stand. Of course, what you can expect is only the best. Check out her brandnew album "Gemini: Both sides". Her voice was missed for a long time, and now Sandra returns with an album she did by herself. You will also find interesting guests like The Roots and The Family Stand. A great soul album that also is jazzy and funky, and comes to you in many ways. If you have a Prince record, have a look for Sandra St. Victor (e.g. "Emancipation"). You already know Sandra, although you might not be aware of it :) (...)

You have to wonder about a music industry that would let a CD like this fall through the cracks. It's full of self-love and awareness, playfullness and sexual bravado - not to mention The Voice! Well, in a world of Britney and Backstreet clones (i.e. blackface without the blackface), who cares if you were fierce enough to back up legends like Chaka Khan and Roy Ayers? Who cares if you once fronted The Family Stand (who, along with Living Color, reclaimed rock music)? Who cares about a seemingly limitless vocal range or a variety of vocal textures?

The CD has been out-of-print for a couple of years now, so I'm surprised that Amazon.com still sells it. Buy it IMMEDIATELY!

Wow. The 8th album from the diva. She has worked with the Harlem disco wizard Patrick Adams and with the groups Igongito, Musique, and has recorded with Inner Life with the hit "I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair). She has release mutiple albums with the groups and currently retired from the music scene. This is the one-hit wonder diva that we've been looking for.

I love me some Shirley Brown - She is the true meaning of a Diva, she sure knows how to jump start a young woman back into reality and do alot of soul searching. My two favorite jams by Ms. Brown are Woman to Woman and You Ain't Woman enough to Take My Man! For all you Betty Wright fans out there who have not heard Shirley Brown, ya'll need to pick up anyone of her CD's. I'm absolutely positive you'll love anyone of them.

No Hit Wonders, Songwriters Tour, Volume 1, is a hidden gem just like the performers on this record.

The four artists comprising this group, James Casto, Sabrina, Joe West, and JP Williams, all have signature styles in their songwriting, vocals, and performances. Each of them is strong enough to have their own record, but putting them together on a record is a musical feast. Singing about everyday joys and struggles, the NWH group inspire awe and amazement with their expressions of Christ's love and the joy of knowing Him and seeing Him work in their life.

All of the songs carry weight and are thoroughly enjoyable, but standouts include Save The World by Casto, Shampoo by Sabrina, Richest Man In The World by West, and Tongue Tied by JP Williams.

The No Hit Wonders hope to have reason to drop their name. Try this enjoyable CD, and they could be on their way!
