5 out of 5 stars You've seen the commercials...........2007-07-07

The diamond commercials are good, but the music is even better! Jenkins's Palladio is what caught my attention in the diamond commercials, and I knew I had to find that particular piece of music! I bought the CD for that one piece only, but the entire CD is wonderful. The CD makes for great calming moments when things begin to get a little hectic. It soothes, calms, and relaxes.

5 out of 5 stars very excellent indeed.......2007-06-08

I have thoroughly enjoyed this Cd...I am a big Karl Jenkins fan anyhow, but this is definately worth the little money it costs.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond Music - wow!.......2006-11-10

Love listening to this while preparing dinner or cleaning in my kitchen!

4 out of 5 stars Minimalist classic fails in subliminal messaging.......2006-04-18

This is the popular music from the diamond advertisements on TV--the repeated string motif increases in urgency, creating a mood of excited expectation. I liked the music in the ad, and it's fun to have the CD.

Sadly, I had hope the recording would contain subliminal messaging to coerce anyone within earshot to buy me lavish jewelry for birthdays and Christmas. I have to report that so far, even playing this judiciously at holiday times, it has not worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars The music samples don't do it justice.......2006-03-04

I bought it only for Palladio and the fact I couldn't get it on i-tunes. I'm still working through the rest of the music which sometimes sounds like a music class going through exercises and scales.

However, I'm finding other diamonds in the rough (pun intended). Specifically, Adiemus Variation II (track 5) which is another beautifully put together piece. My only regret is that I wish there were more variations of Palladio like those that were done on the de Beers commercials (I recall 2 or 3 variants during the run).

Aaron Copland is still the top composer of the 20th century, but Palladio alone puts Karl Jenkins in his company.

The irresistible combination of smoky bossa nova textures and velvety electronic beats has already been successfully mined by Brazilian divas such as Bebel Gilberto and Cibelle. But in the hands of Italian DJ Nicola Conte, the electro-bossa recipe continues to surprise with its wide-eyed innocence, lounge undertones and instantly hummable melodies. Conte has an ear for the melancholy feeling of pop culture nostalgia associated with the 1960s-- the Antonio Carlos Jobim records, the Michel Legrand soundtracks, the Stan Getz sessions. De Souza's sweet vocals and tender delivery are ideal for the task of resurrecting venerable samba nuggets such as Baden Powell's and Vinicius de Moraes' exuberant "Canto De Ossanha" and Caetano Veloso's wistful "Saudosismo." Equally intriguing are the handful of original tunes by Conte and De Souza--a seamless recreation of the summery vibe and enviable lightness of touch that lies at the essence of the bossa aesthetic. --Ernesto Lechner

5 out of 5 stars Nicola Conte Apresenta..........2007-05-19

I first heard Rosalia de Souza on one of the Erotic Lounge compilations, so I decided to buy both this cd and "Brasil Precisa Balançar", her second release. I really enjoyed every track on this cd, the combination of Rosalia's voice with Nicola's production really makes for an impressive release. This truely is a great cd, buy it , you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!! I love you Rosalia!.......2006-02-03

I never know what kind of reaction I'll have when listening to an album. Most of the time, I expect that the album will suck. (Yes, I am that pessimistic.) Anyway, around the time I picked up Rosalia's album, I had just finished Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" at the time. I was disappointed with that album, so I wasn't really sure that I would dig Rosalia's album when I learned that Conte was behind the project.

I was wrong. This album is fantastic. Rosalia's voice is sweet, charming, quirky, and lady-like. "Maira Moita," is one of my favorite songs off the album. Rosalia's a wonderful performer. And, I have to give kudos to Nicola Conte for the stellar arrangements on this album. He also brought new life to the Powell classic "Canto De Ossanha" and Veloso's "Saudosismo."

On a side note - I've heard three versions of "Canto De Ossanha" performed recently by three modern albums - Daude (who does a great catchy reinterpretation r&b/pop version of the song) and Paula Morelenbaum (whose album I adore - but fails at her interpretation because it sounds cartoonish) and Rosalia's whose version is closest to original version. Her interpretation is classic, beautiful, and wonderful.

I adore Rosalia, who is definitely among the top of the modern day Brazilian divas! I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and gorgeous.......2007-03-24

A celebratory triumph of a poet, songwriter, and performer who embodied a love of life, good company, melody, and the beauty of women and words. Bethania's voice is as remarkable as Vinicius's twin talents for poetry and the pleasures of love. This album somehow manages to out-ballad her great career of balladeering, AND have more energy and pleasure in the "up" sambas as well. Superb and varied arrangement throughout, among the best in modern MPB.

I could listen to Mulher, Sempre Mulher and Tarde em Itapua all afternoon. Actually, I have!

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful homage........2006-11-14

One of Brazil's greatest voices tackles the back catalogue of one of its greatest songwriters.

Maria Bethânia has carved out a distinctive place for herself amongst the pantheon of Brazilian greats of the last half century.
Her love for the dramatic, the theatrical and the unashamedly romantic has earned her a place in the hearts of a devoted fan-base and today, 40 years after her debut show in Rio set her on the path to stardom, she is still one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.

It is also 40 years since she first met the legendary poet, lyricist and co-founder of the bossa nova movement Vinícius de Moraes, an early supporter with whom she went on to forge an enduring friendship.
To celebrate this double anniversary, Bethânia has produced "Que Falta Você Me Faz" ( this is the original title of the album), a homage to Vinícius that draws on material from across his luminous career, including his near-mythical collaborations with Tom Jobim and Baden Powell.

Typically, Bethânia has sought out material with a dramatic edge. Her selections range from the smooth, confident samba of `Lamento no Morro' to the introspective `O Astronauta'. Her smoky, controlled delivery is complemented perfectly by an expansive musical setting based around sensitive arrangements of piano, guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, the glossy, overwrought strings that Bethânia too often relies upon to provide the emotional punch are also present on many of the tracks, needlessly distracting from the otherwise subtle performances.

"Que Falta..." is at its best on songs such as "Modinha" and the closing "Nature Boy" (with brother Caetano Veloso) when the backing is kept simple, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Bethânia's remarkable voice to shine.
At moments of undeniable beauty such as these, the set borders on perfection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-07-18

The sound from this CD is more of a 'traditional jazz' feel rather than the usual bosa nova stuff that is coming out of Brazil these days, more upbeat and played at a slightly quicker pace. I get an almost Diana Krall meets (early) George Benson feel to this (cant be a bad thing) Still maintains that silky Brazilian sound thought.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-04-24

I actually don't know what the guy below meant when he says less sophisticated, yes it's very diferent from garota moderna and i accept i was a little dissapointed when i first listen to it cause i was expecting something more electronic like her first album but once i started to listen carefully i swear, i realized this is probably better than garota moderna, and that's a lot since i considered that one the best modern brazilian music CD, but Brasil precisa balancear is so elegant and exquisite, it can goes from a very slow rythm to a very fast samba in in the same song, melodies are always beautiful, as usual, and if this isn't better than garota moderna it deserves five stars in my opinion anyway!

3 out of 5 stars different from garota moderna.......2007-01-04

Les sophisticated than garota moderna but more organic than this. Well produced and arranged (thanks to roberto menescal)and including a handfull of singles.

5 out of 5 stars Class and Jazz on Rosalia's Second.......2006-03-01

I got into Rosalia De Souza's voice without really knowing it - when I was listening to Les Hommes and Quintetto X; both artists on Schema's label along with Rosalia. But I really got hooked after she featured on Break & Bossa vol 5, where she opened up a continuous bossa mix with back to back tracks - the classic Canta De Ossanha and then the unique track "Zig-Zag" (it's on her album but without lyrics). Some months afterwards, her debut album was released and it was stunning. Now in 2006, Rosalia's back with her second album. But this time she has the help and production work of the terrifically talented Roberto Menescal instead of the very impressive Nicola Conte.

This is a very good album, although I must warn from the start that the vibe is FAR different from "Garota Moderna". This was recorded in Rio De Janeiro and again, with the expertise of Roberto Menescal. It has a completely different ambiance. From the first song on, I was actually reminded a bit of her work with Quintetto X but with a bit of a 'spark' to it. "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", a classic Orlandivo cut was a pretty classy intro, very smooth. Voz da Lapa is another nice track highlighting Rosalia's voice but with the help from labelmate Toco on vocals. "Que Bandeira" (that flag) features Marcos Valle in a guest role, hmm... nice but not the highlight of the album to me. "Ao Amigo Tom" is a nice tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim (Tom), nicely laid over a play of one of his classic ballads to close. Other standouts on this to me were "Agarradinho"... what a song. "Nem Que Seja a Nado" was also nice, "Rio De Janeiro" had that sweet Carioca feel to it, "Vivo Sonhando" is a Jobim track that Rosalia does a fantastic job of covering and the album closes wonderfully with "O Que e Amar"... beautiful song with great a romantic guitar.

I certainly recommend this. The album was well put together, is rather deep and sung with care and the musicianship is simple... yet not so simple. To be honest this reminded me quite a bit of Joyce's more recent works on Far Out records but... recorded in Rio. The album is certainly a tribute to Brasil, Bossa Nova and Samba and Toco, Roberto Menescal and of course Rosalia De Souza were outstanding and put togehtre some beautiful songs. I listened to this from beginning to end, but must again warn that if you're looking for a more bossa album or a sound like in "Garota Moderna", you'll be disappointed. If you do like this, definitely check out Joyce's "A Little Bit Crazy" and you'll probably like work by Maria Rita, Rosa Passos and Luciana Souza.

As far as format - I'm unsure if it will have a domestic (USA) release. But it will have a Schema release (this one), which means it'll be available without the two *bonus* tracks on the import from Japan. There will also be an LP version of this however it will not have "Agarradinho" or "O Que e Amar". Also please note that if you do get the Japan import version instead of the Schema import, the linear notes and information is in kanji.

Whether such lofty notions as "the circle remains unbroken" or "all things old become new again" mean much to The Redwalls is debatable. But the young Chicago quartet channels their passion for r&b-tinged '60s/'70s rock forms with admirable energy on a big label debut that seems as inspired by resurgent Britpop as it does a reaction against a decade of shoe-gazing alt.rock. The raucous opener "Robinson Crusoe" lurches with loping rhythms and a brass section wallop, while the gritty vocal swagger of Logan Baren belies his age (at 22, he's the band's elder statesman) and avoids most of the pitfalls of poseurhood. Yet there's more to Redwalls here than the muscular mod pretensions of hard-charging anthems like "On My Way" and "It's Alright," ranging confidently from the infectious blue-eyed soul of "Thank You" and "Hung Up On the Way I'm Feeling" to the bittersweet pop melancholy of "Front Page" and noisy psych-dirge "Back Together." Like any good recipe, it's not the familiarity of the ingredients that triumphs here, but the heart and soul with which they're lovingly stirred together. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Redwalls.......2007-03-15

The Redwalls are a mix of Bob Dylan, The Beatles and little of Tom Petty. This bad is up and coming. Truly a great band.

4 out of 5 stars Think Monkeys, not Beatles.......2007-02-22

The Beatles comparison is inescapable. These songs are close enough that one can't use the word 'original' without blinking. The Redwalls' De Nova is De rivative. But that's ok. Because, like the Monkeys (America's answer to the Moptops), this is still good music and really fun. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in exuberance. Lots of melody, harmony, and rhythm crammed onto one disc. The Beatles were the seminal moment- the spark that lit countless fires. The Redwalls are one of those fires (a big blazing bonfire) that heats things up and, with no irony, salutes the Fab Four proudly.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air .......2006-07-11

Everybody is influenced by something or someone. And you can hear all kinds of different influences here. So what? These guys have got it going on. The first time I heard "On My Way" I found myself singing along before the song was over. This stuff makes me feel good.

4 out of 5 stars Retro-rockin' Fun.......2006-03-03

The "album cover" art should be your first clue of what to expect from the Redwalls: a "shelf-worn" effect and a cover photo of them in rather Beatle-esque poses. (Apparently they passed on an opportunity to label their CD tracks as "Side 1" and "Side 2".) But these guys are not "poseurs" - they have an honest passion and commitment to the "British Invasion" sound of the 1960's. Throughout this energetic and musically authentic effort, you'll hear echoes of the Who, early Elton John, and especially the John Lennon side of the Beatles. (Listen to the closing track, "Rock and Roll", and then try telling me I'm wrong.) These young lads from Chicago have nailed down the sound better than any of their contemporaries, better than even Canada's Sam Roberts. This is a fun and energetic CD with a number of standout tracks, including "Build a Bridge", "Robinson Crusoe", and "Thank You". (And for you "sensitive" listeners, don't let the "explicit" tag scare you off - it's only for one song, "Falling Down", which uses profanity to make a point about radio censorship.) This album doesn't pretend to be avant garde, nor does it want to be. Just put in on, shake your mop-top, jump around, play air guitar, and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning musicianship, must-have album .......2007-04-01

I admit I haven't heard much of Baden Powell apart from this album, but I find it hard to imagine there can be anything better. For an introduction to BP, this is the one to get.

BP is absolutely scintillating on these 2 CDs. All are French recordings, the 1st CD from his Barclay work, the 2nd from Festival. There is a huge variety of music considering it all comes from the one artist.

Perhaps I'm biased, but after many listens I have to say every track is a masterpiece. This is wonderful guitar playing from start to finish, and if I had to try to categorise (impossible!) then the closest I could get would be Bossa meets Bach meets The Boss BP!

5 out of 5 stars MOST IMPACTFUL ALBUM TO ME IN 2004.......2005-05-26

I had not known Baden Powell, and can thank DJ Ann Porotti's "All That Jazz" on WTJUfm in Charlottesville, VA (UVA) for introducing me. Having now listened to this album many, many times, particularly the second disc, which I prefer (altho both are great) - I can say that this album, more than any other in 2004, really impacted me and opened my ears to another area of listening.

Powell swings, picks, vocalizes background, and this music can serve as background or mood music - the album is just great. I do not know the language, and don't relate to the track titles, so I listen to his album as I do opera, for the pure sound. It's terrific guitar playing, and great overall music.

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening for guitar enthusiasts.......2004-05-15

This is a great distillation of the European recordings of Baden Powell.

The theme selection and the quality of the sound is superb. I say this up front because these should be the top priorities in releasing recorded music.

The rest of the production, however, seems a bit rushed (at least on the unit that I own). The graphic design is lovely, and the photos are great, but the copy is in two languages: English is used for the general notes and the technical data on each track, but the individual track notes are in portuguese. Fortunately, I can read both languages. The individual track notes are short, so if you aren't bilingual, don't worry. You won't be missing a whole lot.

Also, on disc 1, track number 6 is labeled "Folha Morta", but it really is "Valsa de Euridice". The confusion may have arisen because it is taken from a live show and you can hear Baden warming up with "Folha Morta" for a few seconds before breaking into "Euridice".

All in all, this is a great way to add some essential Baden Powell tracks to your collection without breaking the bank (Baden went through a frenzy of releases in the 60's and 70's, so there is a *LOT* of material out there).

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2004-02-09

thank God for cable music channels...i was surfing one night, and heard baden powell playing his rendition of the classic "round midnight"...

if you like paco de lucia, al di meola, holdsworth, michael hedges, van halen, satriani, etc., then you need to add this to your collection...

Album Details

Original Vocalist in Sergio Mendes Brasil '65 / 66. Recorded in 1966, Produced by Sinatra's Producer David Cavanaugh.this Beautiful, Relaxing and Erotic Album was Ympathetically Arranged by the *seemingly* Unlikely Figure of Munsters Theme Composer Jack Marshall (But Let Us Not Forget his Stunning Arrangement of Peggy Lee's "Fever"!), it Drew It's Repertoire from Some of the Most Cutting Edge Young Brasilian Composers, all Wrapped in an Amazing Soundtrack-like Production, with Wandas Voice, a Thing of Beauty in Itself, Leading it All. Promoted Originally as "The *real* Girl from Ipanema" (Because She Was!) Wanda was a Sensation. All in all a Wonderful Album for the Brighter Times Ahead, and Perhaps for More Intimate Moments....

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova At Its Best.......2004-08-25

In an age where music can be pirated with relative ease, the odds of certain cherished LP albums ever getting re-mastered are starting to get as likely as a winning lottery ticket. When this reviewer discovered that the smoky voice of the lovely Wanda De Sah and her excellent album "Softly" was finally getting the fine treatment with a new import release, I hit the ceiling. Then I demanded I get to talk about this album. Without artists like Wanda De Sah there might never have been a Pink Martini or a Pepe and the Bottle Blondes. Lounge culture might have suffered.
The Bossa Nova influence over the lounge scene in the 60's is not debatable. The fusion of Brazilian rhythm ideas with contemporary vocals made many artists real names in a burgeoning period of crossover success stories. Wanda de Sah, a real girl from Ipanema, and a talented guitarist of the Bossa sound in her own right, followed the success of her exposure as a featured artist in Sergio Mendes' Brazil '65 ensemble with a solid solo effort in "Softly."
Young fans of the Ultra Lounge series will recognize Wanda's name from several quality recordings that appear on that Grammy winning CD set, but this is the CD to own. With tunes like "Ho Ba La La" and "Samba de Orfeu" the singer's voice both tempts and excites you. This is a well-planned recording, with material from such big name Bossa Nova giants as Tom Jobim, Vinicius, and Carlos Lyra. "So Danco Samba" might be regarded as the best track historically, but there's equal appeal in pieces like "Corcovado" and "Once I Loved." Some of the songs are in English, and the playful, airy, international voice that so impressed Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole's agent is alive and well with digital re-mastering. The Portuguese tracks create a sense of art that modern Bossa artists are always reaching for, and the arrangements of Jack Marshall on this album are endearing to the ears.

      Album Description

Born in Romania in 1881 and trained in Vienna and Paris, George Enescu created a synthesis of Romanian folk music and the western European symphonic tradition in his Poème roumain, Op. 1, composed in 1898. This work (along with the following Rumanian Rhapsodies) was received with such enthusiasm that Enescu complained from time to time that the success of his early works was preventing his audience from appreciating his later compositions. The symphonic poem Vox Maris (Voice of the Sea) was written in 1929 but revised numerous times until Enescu's death in 1955. Long thought to be unfinished, a virtually complete score turned up in his estate. It was Voix de la nature that remained unfinished. Only the first movement, with the title "Nuages d'automne sur les forêts" was completed. The fragment consists of forty-three pages and was composed between 1931 and 1939. Cristian Mandeal is Chief Conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic, now renamed in honor of Romania's greatest composer.

      1 out of 5 stars YIKES! .......2007-03-03

If you are into Brazil/Electronica, DO NOT GO FOR THIS. I admit it is a fun CD but after the first track or so you start to think that maybe you should be playing shuffleboard on an old person's cruise or listening to this at a retirement center. It's just not up to date with what is considered modern Brazil/Bossa Nova/Electronica.

5 out of 5 stars Party Time - Brazilian Style!.......2006-01-31

Awesome collection of songs. I was wary that it may be too electronic or fusional... but not so! There are blazing instrumental parts and absolutely incredible, powerful and full-of-life vocals that will really make you want to dance! You will hardly even notice the electronic elements, as they only enhance all the live action. A great driving, party, or chore-doing CD. Seriously consider getting it! Lots of tracks, too!

5 out of 5 stars good brazilian vibes.......2005-10-17

Excellent disk. Salome de Bahia is a great singer and Bob Sinclar a great producer. It brings a fresh look to classic Brazilian tunes, as well as Salome's own.

      5 out of 5 stars Brasil is a bomb!.......2005-10-06

This cd takes some classical brasilian songs suchs as mas que nada and taj mahal and are remix with salome wonderful voice (from bob sinclar's outro lugar) that boosts these classic into something that makes you want to scream dance and shout out of hapiness and joy.
