4 out of 5 stars Blues, Ballads & Devotion.......2005-01-13

Personnel: David "Fathead" Newman (tenor saxophone on all the cuts!); John Hicks (piano); Steve Nelson (vibraphone); John Menegon (bass); Winard Harper (drums). Produced by Houston Person. Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey (08/14/2004)

I saw Fathead in Seattle right after he played one of these tunes as a solo at Ray Charles' funeral in LA. The old R&B sideman has become a tenor saint. And a leader. I asked him why he never put out a ballad album, since all the great tenors finally do. "Make it all tenor!" I whispered. He just smiled. Maybe he already had this filet on the coals.

Usually his tenor ballads are interspersed with pop, R&B, funk, and much of it on flute or alto sax. So we've never had a straight tenor session from Fathead. You have to go to blues albums under other names like Ronnie Earl ('Grateful Heart') or Jimmy McGriff ('Dream Team'). Those blues artists know that they want Fathead on tenor and nothing else! Well, this CD is about as close as I'll come to my dream, a Fathead Newman ballad/blues album on which he sticks to tenor.

No other tenor player has a sound quite like his: from the Texas lineage of Illinois Jacquette, Arnette Cobb, Willis Jackson and James Clay. This often means a tendency to bar-walk and honk. But Fathead, like Brother Ray, mellowed his blues shout into a gentle cry, gritty but tender. That is the particular genius in both of their sounds, and maybe Fathead learned it from brother Ray. Or maybe the secret is his old hard-rubber Berg-Larson mouthpiece: each amber note of melody served up smothered in gravy, charbroiled on the outside but juicy within. I would put Fathead in a distinguished list with Pres, Ben, Trane, Jug, Dexter and Getz. What do these disparate tenors have in common? They each have such a distinctive sound, all they need to blow is one note to gain instant recognition.

You'll recognize every tune as a Ray Charles hit, but you'll find that Newman has chosen the most melodic and balladic of Ray's songs. Even those that were originally up-tempo R&B have been turned down to sunset mellow. For after all, this is a eulogy to the master blues wailer who first introduced the young sax player with the album 'Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Newman'('58). Like another recent eulogy, Houston Person's 'To Etta With Love' (Etta Jones), this tribute to a late great musical partner is bitter-sweet. At the same time, it gently swings.

Note the excellent accompaniment: master pianist John Hicks, the hot young drummer Winard Harper, and one of the best vibists in contemporary jazz, Steve Nelson. Each of these musicians can muster and lead their own recording sessions. It speaks highly of their respect for Ray Charles and his old friend Fathead that they would play as sidemen on this session. No, it isn't ground-breaking or even charged with edgy five-star energy. But it's worth every penny and every tear because of the devotion, drenched with memory, that inspired it.

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional.......2006-03-20

This is not what one thinks of as Rockabilly, but if one keeps an open mind it is a very rewarding CD. It's more of a blend of Rockabilly and Weestern Swing with a bit of an edge. I love to play it loud when I'm making chilli.

4 out of 5 stars A burnin' hunk of western swing!.......2002-02-10

From the moment "Hadicillin Boogie" starts coming out of your speakers, you're going to fall in love with this record.

And if you're the observant type, you may even remember that this track currently appears in a commercial for the Honda Accord. A couple are driving along a lonely Texas freeway in their Accord, "Hadicillin Boogie" is playing on the stereo, and they have a good natured nonverbal dispute over how loud to play this song (inadvertantly demonstrating the convenience of auxiliary volume controls mounted on the steering wheel).

Hopefully, the exposure will get Ray Condo and his band some more recognition. This is an excellent record--35 minutes of swing, jazz, and rockabilly. The only problem I have with this record is that "Hadicillin" rocks SO hard that it almost overshadows the rest of the album. A great cut overshadowing a bunch of good cuts--now that's the kind of problem I wish more records had.

5 out of 5 stars Grab your Babe and Hold On!.......2000-07-06

Don't put this CD on in the late evening or you'll be up all night.... Dancing! I mean these cats know how to jump, jive and wail. The pedal steel guitar will twang your heart, the sax will burn your soul. Ray has a voice that is slatherin' with dirty, low-down jitterbug. If you can remain seated during the first cut "Hadicillin Boogie" you better call 911... you're dead!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......1999-10-13

I've been listening to ray since 1989 when he was with his hardrock goners and I'm happy to say he hasn't changed

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but a blood-moving, swinging good time.......1999-01-02

You can enjoy Ray Condo and His Ricochets for so many good reasons. Maybe you have a need for an injection of kick-ass, swinging, clean-your-whole- house energy. Maybe you love swing or rockabilly or country music or all three at the same time. Maybe you'd like to hear some astounding musicianship for a change, or a wonderfully whining pedal steel. Maybe you're fan of cool old and new songs, sung in a voice drenched in an uptempo life on the road with a band. This is a combo that many more people need to hear about, and soon. They have the arrangements, chops, and just plain fun that Squirrel Nut Zippers wishes they had, without the Zips self-consciously arty cleverness. This guy, leading this band, is the real deal. Do yourself a favor: buy this CD, see the band live, and tell everybody you know.

The audio quality is great, as is most often the case with Reference Recordings. However, there are far better chorales and compositions than represented on this cd. The content strikes me as saccharine. We're not allowed to mention other recordings in reviews, but I put one idea of some good choral music (chorale la) in the recommended instead section.

I really like heoric choral/organ/orchestra music. But this is the ONE disc that I think everyone should experience. I recently played this disc at a HiFi Event in Norway. About half the listeners clamored for info on where to buy it. This one is magic, trust me.

4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Blues at its best.......2005-08-28

This is simply a beautiful classy recording by L.Thurston and a number of tremedously gifted musicians, who have created an album with a smooth laid-back feeling, but at the same time edgy, due to the clever lyrics by Jeff Alexander. Great guest appearences by Levon Helm and Johnnie Johnson. You also have to get Johnnie last album "Johnnie be eighty, and stil bad", also with vocals by L.Thurston and songs by J. Alexander.

5 out of 5 stars School for Fools, Songs of Jeff Alexander / Larry Thurston.......2003-01-15

Superb new blues cd with down to earth lyrics from the heart that anyone can relate to. Larry Thurston's rich, smooth vocals pour the songs out in an easy, comfortable way that made me at home with this cd the first time I heard it. Jeff put together an outstanding group of musicians including Levon Helm, drums, Johnny Johnson, piano, and many more notables. It immediately became a staple in my play list at "The Roadhouse"

4 out of 5 stars Classy blues that is well worth a listen..........2002-12-17

Although Larry Thurston (ex Blues Brothers Band) has essentially retired from performing live, he has not lost his wonderfully rich baritone voice. Thurston takes the lead for producer/songwriter Jeff Alexander's latest blues project, "School For Fools," aided and abetted for the most part by ex-Band drummer Levon Helm.

Thurston's talents as a singer are evident right from the opening "Brokenhearted and Broke". Although the backing musicians may change the quality never wavers throughout. The best tracks are the two where Johnnie Johnson (ex Chuck Berry) guests on piano. The first, "Warning Shot," has a fairly laid back groove, and, with Arno Hecht doing a fine job on sax. The band then up the tempo for "Happy Hour," which is driven along by the neat combination of Johnson and Keith Doder (harp).

"School For Fools" is a very good CD which is packed full of original classy blues tunes. Apparently Jeff Alexander has more blues stuff in the pipeline. If it's half as good as "School For Fools" it will still be worth a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2002-12-15

What a cool record! This is the best new blues I have heard in a long time! A great old time sound. Larry Thurston is an amazing singer, and these songs, wow! These are the best blues lyrics to come around in years. I have to admit, I bought the cd because Levon Helm is a featured performer on the recording, and we all know we don't hear enough of Levon any more, but this was a find! I can't say enough about Jeff Alexander's songs. He manges to paint exceptionally vivid lyrical pictures, always in a delivery that is appealing to the ears linguistically and musically.
I can't even pick a favorite song, I love em all! "Happy Hour" is knee slapping funny, and at the same time a song that describes the sanctuary of a great love relationship. Johnnie Johnson gives a real Johnnie Johnson performance, and the song is a rompin, stompin blues. "Gravediggin Man" has a groove that cannot be denied, courtesy of Levon Helm's classic drum sound. It is classic Levon, and classic blues, all at once. "Brokenhearted and Broke" is a good time dancin' blues, absolutely hysterical. We all know that man, and we all know that woman. "My Woman Left Me" is a burner all right, awfully pretty. This one is down and dirty blues, vivid, and not for the faint hearted. "Blues To Go" is brilliant and sounds great, late night west coast blues at it's best. Brilliant lyrics. "Reasons To Love" is a song with a great message, and it is not sappy at all. But is a song that needs to be heard. Brilliant!
If you are a blues lover, or a lover of good intelligent music, this is one cd you have to have in your collection. What I want to know is, why haven't I heard of Jeff Alexander or Larry Thurston before? Where have these guys been hiding?

There are at minimum, 27 different releases on 24 different labels of his Swing Time & Down Beat Recordings from 1949-1952 when he was 19 to 22 years old. Kiss Me Baby (Kissa Me Baby), I'm Going Down to the River and All to Myself Alone are three of my favorite songs. The first two have horns that just blast ya. The latter is so painful, so very much alone, in lyric and spirit. A true bluesy number that makes you feel the pain.
