Amazon.com essential recording
"Country rocks ... but bluegrass rules." If Ricky Skaggs was looking for a manifesto for his long-awaited bluegrass comeback, he couldn't have done much better than this disc's five-second preamble. Contractually barred from recording bluegrass for more than 12 years, Skaggs has obviously been champing at the bit. After the aforementioned introduction, he promptly unleashes an instrumental "Get Up John" that still has smoke wafting from my CD player. Dandy versions of "Little Maggie," "If I Lose," and "Rank Stranger" follow, to single out just a few. The musicianship here is uniformly superb, especially Skaggs's own mandolin playing, the guitar work of Bryan Sutton, Bobby Hicks's fiddling, and even a nice guest turn from Jerry Douglas. If there's any justice, the commercial success of Bluegrass Rules will send a strong message to record companies: Bluegrass music can and does sell records, especially when it's as flawlessly executed as Skaggs's latest. Let's just hope we don't have to wait as long for the next one. --Mary Park

wow!.......2007-01-13
This has not left my CD player since I purchased it. I know it was done a few years back; but, it is definately worth every single penny. Ricky Skaggs is just amazingly talented.
wow........2006-12-22
wow. there really isnt much more to say. if you have any appreciation for talented musicians playing beautifully composed pieces of music in any genre then you'll love this right off the bat. i know you're not supposed to be able to wear out cd's but i've gotta be getting close with this one. throw this one in and just drive and let all the troubles of the world be lifted.
i love ricky's country but his bluesgrass rules.......2006-08-14
this is one of those bluegrass albums. you cant be without, i love everysong from this album not a bad one at all. bluegrass albums are my favorites by him i was raised on bluegrass music. and i know alot about ricky skaggs, from my dad who is also a mandolin picker and singer and he had the great joy of meeting ricky's sister at a studio once... would love to meet the man himself someday if your a bluesgrass or a rickyskaggs fan then get the album you'll be glad you did.
Pretty good, certainly not their best.......2006-03-02
but the band is tight and sounding as good as ever. The material (selections) is a bit weak overall and the first and last cut add nothing. The length is disappointing at 35m er so. Their LIVE at the Charleston Music Hall and Brand New Strings are both much better efforts. The LIVE album is particularly good and even more surprising that it's a LIVE album to begin with. You can feel their energy in that...that's one of the things missing here. Still a good listen but look for a discount on it (I got it for under $10 on the music streamer I use) as the length and a $15+ price tag would have wound me up. ;-) ...enjoy...Dave
Not for the faint of heart.......2005-09-25
This is an exceptional CD. The instrumental talent and Ricky Skagg's one of a kind voice makes this a must have CD for anyone who enjoys BlueGrass. For anyone new to BlueGrass this is an excellent example of the genre. Find somewhere comfortable to sit with a nice breeze and just lean back and listen. If there was a school where the new pop singers of country(and I use that term country loosely for the new generation)could learn about country's roots. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder would be the schools masters and this CD the book to read from.

Album Description
"Voyage To Afghanistan" is a weird and wonderful little masterpiece. Lyrically it never fails to entertain with little twists and clues, almost like the "12 Monkeys" or "Fight Club" of CDs. Musically its kinda like the Beatles meet Radiohead,Lou Reed and Bowie in a bar and they get the bartender to sing. What I really love about this CD is the layers. On top, the songs fly by beautifully and sound great, but if you wanna go deeper there is a plethora of incredible images and tie-ins. Dig In, "Voyage" is a very satisfying meal.
Customer Reviews:
Underground music for Overground dwellers.......2006-03-24
some stats: 'Voyage To Afghanistan' (1995-97) 13 tracks TT= 55:06
(printed lyrics included)
It's hard to pidgeonhole this cd. Suffice to say that it is very accessable underground rock-pop, with a strong emphasis on the lyrical storysongs of Abraham Cloud (AC). The whole cd feels like a very independent effort, singular, homespun and homegrown (yes,THAT kinda homegrown).
'AC's vocal delivery is reminiscent of a lower-registered Bowie or Lennon, sung in a scruffy, fuzzy and loose (but not sloppy) way. His perceptions project a certain "stoner certified attitude" which propel the various lyrics in engaging, witty and socially sharp observations of Living in general...and life in southern California specifically (the locals will make the references anyway).
The music has all kinds of twists and turns in it making it interesting throughout. Seven of the 13 tracks are preformed with his band (drums, bass, lead guitar), the remaining 6 has AC doing all the wizardry including some sophisticated electronics. These "solo" tracks are the the most idiosyncratic and "psyched".
As I stated earlier, this is VERY accessable 'Underground' music by an artist with a singular vision that FEELS good, complete, and easy-going. It is not hyped, obtuse, contrived or high-brow genius.
Abraham Cloud's music has a rocking groove throughout, and still manages to include threads of folk, pop, and even chamber music. Never pretentious or "obscured by cloud"...it's the perfect bong-load. Just right.
Sgt. Pepper Revisited.......2000-06-06
The feelings I get listening to this Cd is John Lennon if he had lived and went through another very creative period. Its very entertaining and story oriented, and each song is its own little "trip."

A wild ride.......2004-05-14
"World Without Rules" is a perfect title for this album, as it bends all the "rules" by mixing things together to create something different. While the sounds put it in the World Beat camp for me, it's different from other world beat albums because of its mood. World Beat albums tend to fit into one of the following types:
1) Western dance beats underneath traditional musical sounds from the world, giving these albums a feel of dancing in a club in such countries
2) Party music
3) Ambient-beat kinds of things that are good for meditative moods, background sound, or a kind of club-trance dancing
This album varies in mood, and at times it has that meditative, trance-like quality, but then next thing you know the tempo and mood changes and you're taken on a wild ride. Sometimes this ride gets so wild that it evokes screams. Now when was the last time you heard someone screaming in terror on a World Beat album? Other tribal chants sound frantic, almost making you feel like--if you were in the midst of them--"What's going to happen next? Something scary is going down."
The climax of the album is "Monkey Brain Sushi"--very wild and intense. Only 2 1/2 minutes, I wish it was longer! "World Without Rules" and "Desert Diva" are the showcase tunes of this album, seven-minute songs full of emotion and power and even quite danceable.
"Dismissal Of The Hemisphere" is nearly ambient, fronted by tribal bells and carried by female vocals. The vocals in "Rainmaker's Dream" have a dungeon echo to them, accompanied by bongo drums. "Asian Blue" uses electronically manipulated female vocals for an interesting effect, although it's dragged out too long. I had listened to this album many times before I figured out that the vocals in this song were sampled from the album's opening song. "Urban Source Code" seems a bit out of place on the album--it's jazz music, albeit certainly not mainstream jazz, and it does fit the mood of the album, but I don't think it adds to the album.
From ambient to danceable beat, from quiet to powerfully loud, from serene to terrifying, this album runs the gamut but does so in a way that is not at all disjointed. You're taken on a sonic trip on this album that matches its cover's description, "Combustible, cutting edge, avant-world pop."
A repetitive and monotonous album.......2002-12-01
I was quite disappointed in this CD actually. It's so repetitive that I literally checked to see if the CD player had restarted instead of moving to the next disc... nope, it was just track 7. It's basically track after track of drums, all the same beat, with vocals and other things on top occasionally. The drums aren't even organic-sounding -- they sound like my brother's drum kit. The vocals etc are usually harsh and unpleasant. It sounds like someone decided to jump on the "let's make a drum album with chant-y, Deep Forest-y vocals" bandwagon, and it just comes across wrong to me.
I am a fan of Tangerine Dream (both old and new), Deep Forest, Enigma... that type of music. If you're interested in that, I suggest checking out "Big Drum, Small World" by the Dhol Foundation instead; I really like that album. I'll write a review when I get a chance.
A Sampler Society of Our Culturally Diverse Planet.......2002-03-30
In Haslinger's own words: "Music is inscribed between noise and silence, in the space of the social codification it reveals. Every code of music is rooted in the ideologies and technologies of its age, and at the same time produces them." ...
Anyone familiar with the influence electronica artist Paul Haslinger brought to the German band 'Tangerine Dream' in the mid 80s, and any serious fan of contemporary NewAge music such as that of Jonn Serrie or Michael Stearns, will find this CD to be as refreshing as it is original... The album is a 'sampler society' that captures the sounds and sometimes ancient music of our culturally diverse planet while at the same time mesmerizing us with it's flawless layering of synthesizer generated NewAge inspired renditions...
I LOVE the ambient 'space music' of my NewAge collection and can listen to it for days on end, but once in a while, a return to Earth is a welcomed change of pace... This 1996 offering by Paul Haslinger should be a serious consideration for the inclusion in anyone's library of NewAge music... His credentials as a capable solo artist are here for your inspection...
Probably not for the 'only-NewAge-curious', but more for the adept NewAge listener who realizes mood is the essence of enjoying a mix of eclectic tracks such as this collection is... Personally, I have enjoyed listening to this work-of-art over and over again...
Highly recommended for Sunday morning listening in lieu of jazz.
thouroughly enjoyable.......1999-10-26
I figure we need another review to balance out the 2 star review below. Definitely a powerful album. I never got into Tangerine Dream that much so I wasn't suspecting anything better from this release. However, to my suprise, I was taken away by the mix of traditional sounds with state of the art electronics. This one is a keeper.
Groundbreaking CD.......1999-01-15
With all due respect for the 2 star review given this cd by the music fan from Bridgend, Wales, this is a brilliant release. Long a fan of this genre, I first heard it in 1996, and was instantly impressed by evocative arrangements and brilliant production. My first reaction was that Haslinger is one of the few artists today who has truly realized the potential for merging world music with electronica and studio craft in a way that makes anything before it pale in comparison. The studio is truly Paul's instrument. Unlike other World/new age releases of the mid to late 90's, Paul has truly broken new ground with this creative use of instrumentation and sampling techniques. No other new age/world release gets as much airtime at home or in the car, than does this cd. The melodies are not instantly recognizable, and at times the tracks wonder into a different territory than the listener might expect. However, repeated listening to this cd slowly sucks the listener into an entirely different world of rhythm and sound unlike any other I have heard before. This CD is not to be missed, and is definately a Desert Island top 10. Don't leave home without it.

I found this one used at a bargain price and owning 2 other Irma Thomas Cds, I figured it was worth a shot. She sings every song here with everything she has and the arrangements are all pretty good. This is not a well known work but if you like her more popular works, you'll like this one too.

Just Fantastic.......2002-05-12
I never, ever heard of these guys before I read the existing reviews; man were they right! This is a fantastic CD. I can't quite explain it, but I'll try. Hard rock/hardcore, a sometimes funky sound, with a hard edge on the guitar rhythms. Wonderful bass guitar - the bass is just a joy to listen to. Some songs hit me right away, but there is such variety that it took me about six listens for the whole experience to sink in, but I promise, this is great. It will get under your skin. The guitar just flows, there's no real lead guitar here, but the rhythms are great. This Cd just absolutely rocks, I'm listening to it while I'm typing this review and I'm about to fall out of my chair. Buy it , you will not be disappointed!! I gotta go, these riffs are killing me. You will buy many CDs much worse than this one, much worse, lordy this is a great CD and I'm jumpin to my feet right now cause it ain't a sittin down thing. So let's get busy!!!
Something refreshingly different.......2000-10-26
It's nice to listen to an album that isn't laced with pointless rap vocals about nothing. This album is good, straight-up rock metal. This 3-piece belts out great songs that don't buy into the mainstream crap that floods radio stations today. The live show is killer, and the album well represents it. Anyone who knows anything about music should pick this one up.
Still Under The Skin..................1999-02-19
Close to a year after their initial release Boiler has captured more of the world with the power of "The New Professionals".
The power of the music, yes we can talk about that. Now we can, they deliver the goods. There is no Flash in the Pan identity about this band. They continue to capture the essence of delicious music of years past with an absolute razors edge cutting through dogmatic ideals of the "old school sound". If you want a CD that breathes heavy grooves, this is your home, if you yearn and feel original, music moving, music living and alive...
Boiler is Your Band
Boiler- Fun to Be Loud.......1998-10-31
Ah Boiler- No Candy Coated Goofpop here kids. The music is a mix of good old fashioned kick in the pants NY Hardcore (MOD, Pro Pain) and a spark of grooviness (Korn, Helmet).
The music is anything but easy listening, it is hard hitting and direct. It takes one on a journey through a broad spanse of the audio spectrum, believe you me they have smoked some good PA's too.
They give a classic NY City sound a new life. It is a fresh voice in a world that forgot what being loud with musicality was.
The CD Builds with every track, "Superseed", churns the waters with a sonic earthquake like urgency. That is by far my favorite song on the CD. Second in Line is "Roswall", another churning sonic assault.
They did not give me enough space to rant enough about this CD. It rocks. Get a copy for the car and in rush hour traffic put the volume knob in the gas tank, You will not be denied a spot at any tollbooth!
