Need proof of how great Sly and The Family Stone were? Just check out the track listing for Stand! The title track, "I Want to Take You Higher". "You Can Make it if You Try", "Everyday People",(before it was a car commercial)--and this isn't even the greatest hits package! Hippies with attitude (and serious soul moves), Stone and crew were one of the most influential and free-wheeling forces in R&B/rock. Stand shows why. Gut bucket bass lines (thank you Larry Graham), joyous take-you-there anthems, and seething racial politics that made you move--and think--while on the dance floor. --Amy Linden

Album Description

Sean Kingston, a 17 year old native of Jamaica is not just a new face in popular music, he's accomplished the rare task of creating a new genre where rap, reggae, dancehall, pop, a touch of doo-wop and remarkable songwriting all combined into something totally fresh. Add in Sean's family roots which cite reggae king Buju Banton as his uncle and Jamaican legendary producer Jack Ruby as his grandfather and you have one of the most exciting debuts this year.

Finally a CD worth every penny! More than half of the tracks on this album are ready to released as singles...this album is great to have at your summer party!!

What can I say about this record? Let's face it R&B/Hip-hop has been really stale this year. I'm impressed to see such a young artist using innovative sounds/lyrics. Why are so many R&B/Hip-hop artist afraid to draw from other influences in different genres of music? I listen to all genres of music so I can appreciate this record.

I think people who have rated this album poorly have "limited" taste in music...meaning they don't mind hearing the same beats/lyrics over and over from artist to artist. Or they propably haven't really listened to this record.

If you enjoy Sean Paul, Michael Jackson, Kanye West buy this record. Yes, it's that good.

Sean Kingston seemed to come out of nowhere with "Beautiful Girls" this summer. The song gained well through the charts landing him a very good, summer, breezy-reggae hit, with one very unexpected ending. And now he delievers with his new self-titled debut. With Kingston's debut, you get the obvious flowchart of an R&B newcomer. A few party songs ("Kingston", "Got No Shorty", "Drummer Boy"), a few heartfelt ballads ("Me Love", "Dry Your Eyes") and the obligatory "song of the summer" "Beautiful Girls", most notable for Kingston killing himself by the end of the song. Tied in for good measure is the song featuring whatever young R&B girl that's hot at that current, and then you find "There's Nothing" with Paula DeAnda. And to match his hot, hit single that samples Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", he and Rotem then sample Phil Collins's "In The Air Tonight" on "I Can Feel It" with mixed results. Anything new or exciting going on here? No, but there's nothing bad going on here either. Originality isn't quite Kingston's gem, although bringing breezy, summery, Jamacain styled music, that would indeed be Kingston's gem quality. His voice isn't the rangiest, but his perplexed, unpredictable flow is what makes it the most interesting. Add in producer Jonathan Rotem and the aforementioned list of love songs, party songs, and some hood tracks, and you get one set of enjoyable reggae/hip-hop jams that define the summer. Some may question the aggression of the disc (he's barely 17), and Kingston might not be too out of the box. But he's not the dull pencil in the box either. 3.5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars simple garbage...........2007-08-01

Beautiful Girls" is really a misleading song. It seems to imply that maybe Sean Kingston was going to have producers that might do something interesting; combine R&B, in the vein of Sean Paul, with bubblegum doo wop. The song is, in a word, the perfect guilty pleasure. Thing is, everything else on Sean Kingston's debut album is pretty much...uh...***.

You don't expect much out of an R&B album these days when the artist in question had an army of merchandise available a month before his album had even leaked, so I really wasn't expecting that much. But the single that led to all of this madness ("Beautiful Girls") was probably my favorite single of the summer. Thus, my expectations for some massively awesome fusion between Sean Paul, 50's pop bands and a fat Nelly were shattered with one listen to Sean Kingston.

Notice the two quick references to Sean Paul? Yeah thats because Sean pretty much sounds like a white kid who wanted to sound Jamaican like his idle, Sean (convoluted!). Kingston has tried to embrace his Jamaican roots supposedly, so despite the fact he was raised in the US he attempts to sing with all the vigor of a Jamaican kid fresh off the street. The result is pretty much what it sounds likes- an American trying to sound like an islander with eh results. It doesn't help they really take the time to touch up the sound of his voice in studio- while it makes for a pleasant sound on "Beautiful Girls" the rest of the album gets annoying and sterile sounding quick.

Canned beats. Thats pretty much what Sean Kingston has going for him on the entire album. While the Phil Collins sampling "There's Nothing" is a pretty interesting song, everything else pretty much could belong to any other wannabe rapper. There's the club bangers, the radio-ready hits, the ballads, and the "remix", but inexplicably missing is a real reason to buy the album! When everything sounds like a homogenized version something Sean Paul or Busta Rhymes (yes Busta) did years ago, and the most interesting part of the album is the fact Kingston samples a dreadfully boring Phil Collins song, its pretty self explanatory where this leads.

Maybe this could be salvaged if Kingston had kept the kind of innocent charm "Beautiful Girls" exudes throughout most of the album, but instead its generally more faux-gangsta frontin' made by the same tired producers (or rather producer- JR Totem produced the entirety of the album) that make the same tired album filler over and over and over. "Me Love" is a decent song and is already getting geared up to be the next single, but even thats too annoying to give Kingston another successful single. Get ready for Sean Kingston to be the big one-hit-wonder of 2007. Sean Kingston is entirely devoid of anything that makes a pop album worth listening to; even the catchy stuff is so wrapped up in the absolute fakeness that its hard to take seriously. Perhaps a better term would be "to take lightly."

The bottom line is just get "Beautiful Girls." Its the jam of the summer, and is a certifiable hit that'll likely be at the top of the list for the 2007 section of Remembering the 00's. Just forget about the album and you'll never have to be bothered with more of the same tiresome trash.

5 out of 5 stars Best hip-hop debut thus far this year. .......2007-08-01

Sean Kingston burst onto the scene recently with the summer-hit, Beautiful Girls. Signed to producer JR Rotem's label, Beluga Heights, Kingston gets his entire album produced by the underrated beatsmith. At only seventeen years old, Sean Kingston displays tremendous talent for such a young act, and is skilled in both crooning and rapping. While his commercial success will inevitably bring about many haters and imitators, Sean Kingston shows on this stellar debut that he'll be here for years beyond this release.

After a brief intro, the album opens up to a track that maybe surprisingly to people who only know Sean for Beautiful Girls; a rap track. Sean actually has a well developed flow, and his Jamaican accent certainly adds to the infectiousness of his raps. JR's beat on this track, simply titled Kingston, is a bit harder than what you make expect from the soulful producer; he shows off some of his trademark material on the next track though, Take You There, which also features Sean rapping far more than singing. Take You There is a dope track, and shows off what should soon become Kingston's trademark swagger. Me Love is the next track, and odd as it may sound, samples a Led Zeppelin song. While Led Zeppelin sampled snap-R&B may sound like the strangest experiment in pop music in years(and it is definitely one of them), the ending result is a tight second single. Beautiful Girls follows this track, and you already know this song; it's love it or hate it. I personally love this track, and find it to be the catchiest song of the entire summer. While it may heavily sample Stand By Me, Kingston reinvents it for an entirely new era, and the song may hit close to home with quite a few listeners.

Dry Your Eyes proves Mr. Kingston can certainly get personal, and his rapping on this track, as well as his singing, is heart-felt. JR's production is outstanding, and makes it hard to believe how few emcees and singers have gone to him at this point for their next big single. Got No Shorty is a banging track that'll surely ignite clubs within the months to come, and it features some of the nicest production I've heard on any track all year, and is easily dancable. There's Nothin' is a nice duet with the sexy Paula DeAnda, and the two young singers bring their a-game to this song. I Can Feel It features a predictable Phil Collins sample; while it's predictable, it definitely doesn't detract from the song, and actually boosts the quality.

Drummer Boy is a nice track, while Your Sister is another potential club banger; and while the subject matter may seem quirky, it's unexplored at the very least. That Ain't Right is another more rap-driven track, and Sean raps in what has, at this point, become his signature sing-song flow. Change is a good album closer, in which Sean reflects on wishing he had the power to change the world in a smooth tone. While I say that's the album closer, the Colors remix is also next with reggae artists, and the original Colors with Game and Rick Ross is a bonus track. Both of these songs are tight, hardcore fare that may not appeal to his mainstream fanbase, but certainly help balance this young artist.

In a year full of half-hearted hip-hop debuts, Sean Kingston emerges as unique act in an overcrowded market. While he may attract unnecessary criticism, rest assured that this is one of the finest albums of the year.

On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. That a comedian might rant about how "Cirque du Soleil is like catnip for old people" or the ridiculous unhealthiness of a popular item at the fast food chain KFC is not surprising. That he'd call the fast food item "a failure pile in a sadness bowl" is, let's face it, pure poetry (and really, actually funny the way he tells it). On the track "I Tell a Story About Birth Control and Deal with a Retarded Heckler," Patton displays some of the finest manipulation of a disturbing audience member you'll ever hear. That the album was released by Sub Pop makes perfect sense, as Patton not only has Catholic music tastes--tossing off references to Hasil Adkins, the Pixies, Minor Threat, and Roky Erickson--but as we all know, stand-up is "the new grunge." --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More great stuff from Patton.......2007-08-01

To me, Patton Oswalt is the funniest comedian around right now. He can be really goofy one second and be intelligent and political the next, but he's always funny and never comes off as preachy. It seems like some comedians these days are just really cynical and can't laugh at themselves and it makes their stuff hard to listen to. Thankfully, Oswalt avoids that kind of stuff. I'm really not describing his act very well, but that probably doesn't matter too much because I'm guessing you're already familiar with his stuff if you're reading this.

If you liked Patton's earlier stuff then this CD will not let you down. I don't think it's quite as good as Feelin' Kinda Patton, but it's still pretty great. Most of the bits on here are pretty short, which is good because none of them go on longer than they should. Definitely a comedy CD you'll want to listen to a few times (which is pretty rare with comedy albums) and turn friends onto. The DVD is a nice bonus and contains a stand up act with different versions of the jokes on the CD.

My favorite tracks: America Has Spoken, Clean Filth, At Midnight I Will Kill George Lucas with a Shovel, and Death Bed.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Gonna Fill Your Hoo Haa with Goof Juice!.......2007-07-20

If you're a fan of Patton, this material is just as strong and cutting as "feelin' kinda patton." What's great about this release is that there is also a DVD that has a set from Atlanta's 40-watt along with some other footage of Patton just riffing on different topics.

His takes on different political and social issues is fresh and witty. He's brutally honest and insightful and he's evolved into one of the premier stand-up acts working today. There's always a sense of humanity in his act and that's what makes Patton's appeal so broad. He might be saying something that is mostly cynical but it's always tempered with his kind disposition and witty outlook on life. Beyond all of that, he's an incredible comedy writer and his material on this release is masterfully constructed and his delivery is just as sharp.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I bought some for friends! Funny times ten to the X........2007-07-17

I am a Patton fan and I was expecting to be amused. However, I got more laugh-out-loud moments from this CD than I have from any recent comedy CD. There isn't a bad routine. For me, the gems are "Death Bed" and "Physics for Poets". However, I can say I honestly laughed with every track.

I like the inclusion of the DVD as it allows you to watch the genesis of the material. Patton is a distinct physical presence and that adds to the humor.

My husband rarely finds any stand-up comedy funny. However, as I was playing the CD I saw tears of laughter streaming down his face durng "Physics for Poets". It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars His best stuff yet........2007-07-14

Patton is just getting better and better. Absurd without being wacky. Smart without being pretentious. Political without being preachy.

This is his best album yet. Buy it.

Immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny.......2007-07-13

Patton Oswalt is extremely funny. Not just a little funny - EXTREMELY funny. His material is intelligent & unforgettable and this CD is worth every penny.

The Wreckers are Grammy-winning songstress Michelle Branch and friend/journeywoman Nashville singer-songwriter Jessica Harp, a team whose solid craftsmanship and soaring, airtight harmonies often lift their hook-smart contemporary country stylings above what's too often mere fizzy, pop-crossover formula. They may have entered the public consciousness via the wide exposure of "Good Kind" on the primetime soap opera One Tree Hill, but the bracing, back-porch charms of the single "Leave the Pieces" should find them a following well beyond that series' teen audience. The reflective title track, gritty folk charms of "Tennessee" and giddy crowd-pleaser "My, Oh My" are suffused with a lyrical maturity that's the perfect counterpoint to the duo's sturdy musical constructs. Solid songs all, delivered with a muscular vocal conviction that does considerably more than merely sell them. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Wreckers are about creation, not destruction. Bringing together two young, fearless female singersongwriter-acoustic guitarists—Grammy®-winning, platinum-selling Michelle Branch and collaborator Jessica Harp—The Wreckers' debut album, Stand Still, Look Pretty, blends Branch's pop-rock sensibility with Harp's country-folk style. Edgy yet rootsy, on Stand Still, Look Pretty, The Wreckers have a ball.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not a wreck.......2007-08-03

This is an enjoyable debut album from The Wreckers. Jessica Harp and Michelle Branch are a good duo, harmonizing very well. This album is kind of a country/lite rock mix. The tunes are pretty simple, not a lot of production, but by no means boring. Quite a bit of acoustic sound. Good tunes:

Leave teh Pieces
Tennessee
My Oh My - fun and lively, catchy
Cigarettes - good lyrics and catchy
Rain
Crazy People - good storytelling of a Bonnie in a Bonnie/Clyde duo who settles scores with her Clyde, as well as others.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony, Catchy Lyrics.......2007-07-26

This is one of my absolute favorite CD's. Most of the songs have a great beat and the slow ones make you want to sing along. Has a bit of a bluegrass sound and the harmony of the voices remind me of Big and Rich. This is a great CD if you're heartbroken (a lot of songs of leaving, being alone, etc). I highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-07-09

As many of you probably have, I listened to this album because it had Michelle Branch in it. I have to say that the vocals with Jessica Harp are fantastic and the sound of the songs are nice, but most of the songs aren't that great. Leave the Pieces is a nice song, but not that great. The only ones I enjoyed are Lay Me Down, Rain, The Good Kind, and Tenessee. The rest is mediocre. My, Oh My for instance is just plain boring. Rain is a great song, which sounds exactly as if it came off Hotel Paper, and isn't country at all. Lay Me Down isn't a truly great song, but I really enjoyed it. The Good Kind is a nice sounding song, and the melody reminds me of Breathe. Tenessee is a really good song.
I hope this review was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-28

I love that Michelle Branch can be successful with mainstream and well as country music. She has such a transitional voice and is well suited for both genres. This CD is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great debut.......2007-05-23

Overall, I really liked this album. Some of the songs were surprisingly short and sounded the same, but all in all this is a great start for the Wreckers.

Why Warren Zevon's Stand in the Fire has languished in the CD-reissue era is a mystery. It's an unbridled live rock album, recorded in 1981 when live albums were de rigueur. Zevon, for all the well-orchestrated rock (and great backing vocals on "Mohammed's Radio"), was a small-venue guy and an unlikely rocker. He tears it up on "Stand in the Fire" and adds guitar grit and vocal menace to "Werewolves of London," making the "little old lady got mutilated late last night" line sparkle and name checks James Taylor and Zevon's early champion Jackson Browne. Then there are the added tracks, all four previously unreleased. "Frank and Jesse James" rolls as a piano and vocals vehicle, brilliant in its simple dressing. And the closer, "Hasten Down the Wind," is touching, especially with the ever-aware Zevon introduction: "Speaking as one who has abused privilege a long time," he says, "I tell you, it's great to be alive." --Andrew Bartlett

Recorded at L.A.'s Roxy theatre in 1981, the disc features the two unforgettable original songs Zevon debuted on that year's tour, "The Sin" and "Stand In The Fire." 5 out of 5 stars One of THE great rock and roll live albums.......2007-07-24

Warren's shining moment. That this incredible album only existed on out-of-print vinyl and cassette (and a year ago, on a very limited, expensive Japanese import CD) for so long was a travesty; at long last this error has been corrected. Warren is simply "on fire" at the shows this was taken from, and man, does this lay to waste the studio versions! The backing band, Boulder, is fantastic, with a superb lead guitarist. While one might want to start with "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" (the Anthology on Rhino, not the book; that is for fanatics ONLY), this is far better. Get the anthology double set, this and The Wind; then proceed to, oh, Learning to Flinch (how could "I'll Sleep when I'm Dead" leave off "The Worrier King"??)(or choose the live version of The Indifference of Heaven over the studio one?)Anyways, this disc is Warren in all his glory, with stupendous versions of...well, everything! But especially Jeannie Needs A Shooter,Excitable Boy, and Lawyers,Guns, and Money. The title track is a SUPERB rocker, and The Sin is excellent as well, and you'll only hear them here. The bonus tracks are a nice treat, with Johnny Strikes Up The Band being the best of them. Get this. If you have no concept of Warren other than the "acoustic Heavy Metal troubadour", or the balladeer of beautifully sensitive songs that comprise most of The Wind, this CD will suprise you nicely. AWESOME.

4 out of 5 stars About time........2007-07-15

Seems like another life time since this first came out. Zevon may have gotton better through the years but these performances still sound great.

5 out of 5 stars Live and Raw Zevon.......2007-06-29

I got this in college and had been looking for years for this disc. Once I got it in my hands and put it in the disc player it was like being reunited with an old friend.

I saw Warren twice in acoustic shows, but never got the chance to see him with a full band. This is a great live recording; raw, electric and alive with a unique vitality. Warren takes the energy of the audience and channels it into a vivid preformance. He was one of the most honest rock n roll artists ever. This disc is a must have. Incredible versions of "Lawyers, Guns and Money", "Excitable Boy" among others. Nothing weak on this album. Your collection is not complete until you add this disc.

Representing one of Zevon's very early musical experiments, Stand in the Fire is a live album with ALOT of energy. He was young and wild (he was such an excitable boy). Luckily, his musical talent evolved with time & experience. Both his writing and presentation of his songs improved with age. I rated this CD a "3", mostly for historical interest in his developing talent, & less for pure musical enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Where have I been?.......2007-06-15

I mean, seriously? This CD got me back into Christian music. After hearing this CD I went back and got a lot of their previous albums. Great stuff. I love the mix of 'rocking out' and quiet praise. I honestly could just put this CD on in my truck and never change it.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond 5 stars !!!.......2007-05-26

Wish I could give it a 10+ ... I had this album for over a year and it just sat around and I never really gave it a chance....don't know why but I didn't and then I finally decided to give it a chance and boy was I in for a totally unexpected suprise....once I really listened to it, it did not leave my cd player for 4 months straight. Seriously!! I listened to this CD day and night, on my way to work, at work, at home, working out... wherever I could find a place to just listen and worship. That was why I could not get enough of this CD, it makes you just want to worship and praise Jesus. It is by far the most influential and powerful worship CD I own and I own TONS of Christian albums. I cannot begin to tell you the impact this album has had on my family and friends. I have shared this album with all of my friends and it has had a tremendous impact on them as well. My kids LOVE this album. I would say this, the best songs for me start from tracks 5-10 (From The Inside Out to Fire Fall Down) and 15-17 (The Stand to Hallelujah). These are the passion and root of the album personally. You just get continous and endless praise and worship songs that you can just sing along to, lift your hands and JOYFULLY worship and adore our Creator. This album just makes you want to stop whatever it is you are doing, close your eyes and focus on Him and what He has done for us and how good He is. I have played this cd so much that it is worn out and I have to eventually buy another one. My family and I also saw them at Fellowship Church in Grapevine not too long ago and it was one of the best experiences at a concert in terms of simple worship without alot of unnecessary production. There were no fancy lights or special effects or what have you, it was just simple praise and worship I truly felt Joel Houston's love and passion for Christ and it was a very moving and powerful experience. Truly love this album, love their creativity and most importantly their love for Christ. I not only recommend this album but share it with everyone whom you come in contact with and tell them about this album.IT IS JUST THAT GOOD!!! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS ABLUM....

5 out of 5 stars cant give better.......2007-02-08

the reviews just before this say it all. I wanted to add that this is made MUCH better when you buy the CD/DVD combination. While the DVD doesnt have all the songs, it gives you a much better look and closer feel to their music. Unlike one review below, I think they are getting better with each release much like their parent church. AND they have a new one coming out in March 2007

I was more impressed with this CD than I thought I would be. Its a very good soundtrack that follows GITS: SAC's first season very well. Yoko Kanno did an excellent job arranging the music on this CD. Some of it is great to get your blood pumping. Some of my favorite songs on the CD include cameo's by Origa.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-03-17

3 out of 5 stars I like the album starting from Inner Universe..........2007-01-07

I bought this album for track 11 "Inner Universe"
(which is the track from the opening sequence of the tv show),
and I would buy the album for this one track alone.

As for the rest of the album, I really wanted to like it but
the only songs I found that were good enough to stand on their own
are track 11 "Inner Universe" and track 18 "Rise [TV Size]".

If you want some albums where you can listen to the
entire album (without editing out more than half the album)
I would recommend "Cowboy Bebop" and "Cowboy Bebop: Blue";
they are both much better than this album.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2007-01-06

Well, the second half of this CD is great. From "Inner Universe" on. Maybe it's not quite half. "Beauty is Within Us" is a particularly moving track. Especially when you listen closely or read the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-05-21

I don't drive anywhere without this album in my car. Yoko Kanno has taken her place at the top of my list of favorite composers. Her versatility blows me away. This soundtrack contains a great mixture of music types that stands well on its own besides working so well into the fabric of Ghost in the Shell: SAC. I have to say that the show just wouldn't be as good without her contributions.

5 out of 5 stars More great music by Yoko Kano.......2007-02-12

More great music by Yoko Kano. I think this was even better that the 1st volume.

5 out of 5 stars Most Beautiful and Amazing.......2007-02-08

Another soundtrack by yoko kanno and beautiful doesn't do it justice. I have several favorites from the score but to really know how amazing and joyous it is, it should be heard. I don't think words can describe it.

5 out of 5 stars I Need Stand Alone Complex OST 3.......2006-11-12

Okay, I thought the first OST was amazing so I assumed OST 2 would let me down. Boy was I wrong! Not only do you get full versions of Rise and Get 9, but you are also gifted with two tracks sung by Ilaria Graziano (I Can't Be Cool and I Do).

But let me back up a bit. I knew I would love this OST more than the first one when I slipped it into the CD player in my car and Cyberbird almost ruptured my eardrums. Unbeknownst to me, the volume was up too high and I didn't turn it down until a cop looked at me funny. I think he liked what he heard but was afraid to admit it.

There are seventeen tracks. Each one is different. From techno to electronica to jazz to pop to funk to a lovely ballad titled I Do. There's a little bit of everything, which is just the way I like my music. If you own Vol. 1 you should add this one to your collection.

Amazon - Is there any chance you'll be selling Vol. 3? Pretty please?

5 out of 5 stars Toccante.......2006-11-03

I can't be cool".
Un solo giudizio: da comprare subito, sia per gli amanti delle colonne sonore che non.

Even as they began to fancy themselves as codpiece-wearing Elizabethan minstrels in the gallery, Jethro Tull was a blues-based hard-rock group, and an explosive one, at that. On Stand Up, they enjoy the best of both worlds, with lighter fare such as "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square" and a jazzy instrumental take on J. S. Bach's "Bouree" mixing nicely with the blistering rock of "A New Day Yesterday," "Nothing Is Easy," and "For a Thousand Mothers." On Stand Up, the group's second album, you can hear the band, and the grand scheme behind it, begin to solidify. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Tull lives on . . . .......2007-08-06

This really brought back some memories. I was 15 the first time I heard this. Terrific stuff.
However, record companies should remember why the "extra" tracks were not put on the original album. They weren't good enought to make it to production the first time. (For the LP impaired; Album = Large black vinyl disc. Aka "record")

5 out of 5 stars "Nothing Is Easy" but it isn't hard to love this recording!.......2007-06-23

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Change may be normal in the music business but when a critical part of a machine is removed so early in the game could the replacement be equal or greater? Jethro Tull's debut and intense album "This Was" highlighted the blues guitar offerings from Mick Abrahams. As the band would consider more and more adapting a style closer to English Folk, Abrahams and group parted ways. Enter one Martin Barre.

The same way the Rolling Stones struck gold with Mick Taylor taking over for Brian Jones, Jethro Tull did likewise. In no way is this slighting Abrahams ability. Barre's forte was the ability to diversify and succeed in any musical genre.

Tull opened the second album with the bluesy-based "A New Day Yesterday." Instantly the listener is fixated to the songs construction. Throughout the compositions Anderson's vocals and Barre's tasty playing (as well as the perfect tone for each tune) mesh as one. To solidify the musical side of things Glen Cornick's bass and Clive Bunker's drums are locked together. As you have digested the recording, in the past Barre's skill may have been more prevalent to the ear because his guitar is such an integral part of the sound (He has played with Ian Anderson since 1969) but don't overlook the fine performance Bunker gave.

"Bourée" has become one of the most highly praised instrumentals ever. Almost 40 years later it still is receiving airplay.

"Back To The Family" blends folk and rock. The vocal inflection is perfect. You feel as Ian Anderson is singing for one and not the masses.

"Nothing Is Easy" is another song still being played on the radio. The riff deserves its legendary stature. Barre plays the song with such ease intensity yet ease, it wouldn't feel right coming out of another guitarists hands.

"Fat Man" further explores their folk side with some esoteric sounds to boot.

Time has not diminished the album, only catapulted it standing. With the addition of four bones tracks, it is now easy to go living in the past.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2007-06-09

I listened to this for the first time in many years upon recent purchase, and my feeling is the same as it was 20 years ago in my youth when I memorized the album note-for-note. It's a great collection of songs. Ian and the band move from heavy rock to exotic chamber music to ballad and back and forth, and all 10 songs are not just fine, but extremely well-crafted and memorable. Which makes this a pretty great album.

5 out of 5 stars Their best............2007-05-18

OK, to get the real deal package-wise I think you have to seek out the Japanese digipack with the pop-up of the band in the middle. But if you aren't into childrens-art-book styling like me, and just want the music, get this in any form. "This Was", their first effort, broke us into what they were all about, so then we were really ready for this when it came out. The bonus tracks fit fine thematically and don't mess up what was a nice cohesive LP in the first place. Never have been able to get "Fat Man" out of my head, maybe because it hits close to home.

5 out of 5 stars Forget what you think you know about Jethro Tull.......2007-05-12

The only bad news about this album is that Tull never again came close to this phenomenal album. Technically, this is J.T.'s second album but the first album had a drastically different lineup. "Stand Up" is a beautiful collection of fantastic songs and amazing guitar work. The band managed to produce 2 more great albums before they began to descend into parody. Surprisingly, for the late 60s, most of the band were tea-totallers and it shows. The musicianship is very tight, blending jazz, folk, middle eastern and folk influences into a heady brew that appears effortless. If you think this band is a bunch of boring old hippies, buy this CD and listen more closely. You may be missing some amazing music.

In 1967, Sly Stone was unabashed: his debut, A Whole New Thing, claimed high ground--it was new, big time. He knew it. By 1969, the newness was transformed, Sly was imploring listeners to Stand! and breaking new ground. The snarl of "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" with its droning organ and wah-wah guitar had claws, it was unmistakable. And the full-on blast of harmonica, fuzz guitars, and horns that opens "I Want to Take You Higher" just cemented the claim: Music would unite and fight and kick and get you high. "Everyday People" almost seems an anomaly in this company, a breezy harmony vocal backing, simple piano framing, long horn lines, and a churchy chorus. It's the biggest hit from Stand!, a true pop gem. What you get with the rest of the album (and Sly's early catalog overall) is sui generis. "Sing a Simple Song" has scouring, wordless shouts, a heavy beat backed by multiple voices half-atop each other, horn riffs jetting across guitar riffs, and an abrupt, scrambling end. It's a tight and tough embrace, an open door. It's 1969. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The pinnacle........2007-05-16

In 1969, Sly & the Family Stone finally found their voice with "Stand!". Continuing his fusion of nearly all sounds he could find while redefining what funk was, leader Sly Stone crafted an album with no less than 4 charting singles, topped off by #1 hit "Everyday People".

The album is dominated by something entirely new-- Stone has taken the band's funk sounds and injected some space, some openness into the music. Take the aformentioned "Everyday People"-- it's a funk song, there's no doubt, but it's got a breeziness to it that's somewhat indefinable (that and an irrestible chorus shouted passionately by the band with Sly on top). Likewise title track "Stand!" has this same openness, almost a California pop song to its verses, again with Stone's soulful vocal leading the way.

But there's something else on here as well, an almost claustrophobically dense sound that's beginning to emerge (and that would define the album's followup "There's a Riot Goin' On"). I think in some capacity it's evident everywhere, but it can most be heard in "Don't Call Me N*gger, Whitey" and the 12 minute jam "Sex Machine"-- a dark, bleak sound that doesn't lend itself to open structure but somehow maintains the same irresistability that the rest of the material has. On the former, Sly Stone sings the chorus with a venom over the dense funk dirge, the latter is wholly instrumental, but in roughly the same vein. Both also feature Sly Stone singing through a vocodor run through a wah-wah pedal to extraordinary effect. One thing about them that's definitely, even at their extended lengths (nearly 6 minutes and over 13 minutes respectively), both of them are incredibly intense and intriguing. Both also highly informed the future of music, be it Miles Davis' superb '70s records or pretty m uch the entire genres of soul, funk, r&b and hip hop.

Perhaps when the album does best is when it sits somewhere in between these-- "Somebody's Watching You" wiht its laid back groove and great dirty guitars ends up being one of the creepiest recordings on record and "I Want to Take You Higher" (a remake of "Higher" from a couple years ago) takes the claustrophobia and uses it to push ecstacy to new heights, proving to be downright overwhelming.

This reissue remasters the record and appends a handful of bonus tracks-- mostly single mixes and a couple unreleased recordings and includes detailed liner notes. Sonically, this improvement is fantastic-- the record is crisp and clear and presented as you'd like it to be. The only complaint I have is the choice to leave off singles "Hot Fun in the Summertime" and double A-side "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"/"Everybody is a Star". The three pieces were slated for a followup to "Stand!" that never materialized and ended up being stuck on a "Greatest Hits" record. While strictly speaking they don't belong either here or with this record's followup, it'd've been nice if they were included somewhere with this batch of remasters (for anyone looking, they can be found on "The Essential Sly & the Family Stone").

Bottom line on "Stand!" is that it's one of the great albums of it's era, and together with "There's a Riot Goin' On" forms the peak of Sly & the Family Stone. This is essential listening. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYBODY!!STAND!!STAND!!!!!STAND!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-13

'Stand'is where Sly & The Family Stone's musical experiences onA Whole New Thing,Dance to the Music and Life gestated into something totally unique. Those albums found Sly waltzing over, under and around the funk;on 'Stand' he dives right into it.Of course most of us know the hits by heart-the title track, the punchy rock of "I Wanna Take Your Higher" and of course the immortal "Everyday People".In fact what is so important here is that this marks the moment Sly became a full flegded album artist because the peppy "Somebody's Watching You" is one of those classics-that-never-was-a-hit.As far as the funk goes there's huge handfuls of that in "Sing A Simple Song" and "You Can Make It If You Try" alone.Still neither of those are enough to keep the totally dangerous "Don't Call Me Nigger,Whitey" in check;it's message is right on time with it's us vs. them humor and NASTY fuzz bass. And as far as fuzz bass goes Larry Graham packs almost more into the instrumental "Sex Machine" then the song can handle, but of course it does in a FUNK OVERLOADED kind of way.If 'Stand' itself spoke to and about the cultural, racial and political issues in the world and in music in the late 60's then the MEAN instrumental bonus "My Brain (Zig Zag)",just showing the complete musical inspiration Sly and his band were during 1969-70.If truth be known that inspiration may have been his musical downfull soon to come. But while it lasted,it was amazing.'Stand' is not only a classic funk album and a classic Sly release but a milestone in all of music of the 20'th century.

2 out of 5 stars Smitty Lays an Egg.......2007-07-17

Big MWS fan here since 1990. This is the one blemish on a career I'd call nothing but remarkable and well deserved. There is just nothing here that is accessible and moves the listener. I have tried but do not share the sentiments of others regarding this release. Reviews seem largely mixed here. Starts bland and stays there the whole way through. Michael is a great talent that I have enjoyed immensely through the years but STAND mainly "SITS" idly in my cd cabinet. I'll revisit it every once in a while but it just simply fails to make it all the way through. Come on Smitty, we need a comeback on the next effort.

After one listen to the original, it will quickly become evident that Smith should not have gone anywhere near this song, no matter how hard he wishes to appear as relevant.
