Amazon.com essential recording
Built on a solid foundation of Southern rock but given a contemporary spin that places them in the vanguard of current jam bands, Widespread Panic take an obvious respect for the past and turn it to their advantage as they plot the sound of the future. Space Wrangler is the album that started it all for Panic, introducing loose-limbed rhythmic excursions such as "Coconut" and trance-inducing jams like "Travelin' Light" and "Chilly Water" on an album initially released in the Atlanta area on the Landslide label. The 1992 reissue, courtesy of Capricorn, comes complete with three bonus tracks--"Holden Oversoul," "Contentment Blues," and a likely unprecedented combination of Robert Johnson and Talking Heads tunes on "Me and the Devil Blues" and "Heaven." --Daniel Durchholz

#1 Widespread CD.......2007-06-27
I recently crushed my foot(broken in several places) and have been recooperating with the help of W.P. Although I have been heavily medicated most of the time this is still some of the greatest music I have ever heard. I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!
Fantastic first album.......2006-11-04
This album was originally sold as cassette tapes at concerts. It finally came out as a CD around the same time as the second CD in 1991. Two bonus tracks were added to the CD. It is now 64 minutes long.
The sound quality on this CD is very good. It is hard to believe that this was originally a low budget, independent recording.
This is just a fantastic collection of hard driving, Southern rock songs. It is hard to describe and is not like other southern rock music.
The band plays with remarkable maturity and confidence. They establish a new sound and proudly play it.
This CD, and their second CD (simply called Widespread Panic) are both jaw-dropping, fantastic albums. On both CD's the band is a quartet that has a complex, but stripped down sound. It is the perfect sound for their hard driving style and songwriting.
After this album, the band would add a permanent percussionist and keyboardist. While they may be necessary for a live show, these additions really hurt the band on their studio albums. None of the following studio albums would even come close to the greatest of the first two albums.
great album.......2006-07-31
This is by far my favorite WSP album. The only song I don't really care for is "Contentment Blues".
The additions to the album "Me And The Devil Blues/ Heaven" is a great addition. They're one of the best tracks on the album.
If you've heard Widespread Panic and like what you've heard so far you need to get this album.
check this out too.......2006-07-08
I am a big fan of rootsy, acoustic rock with some jam band style, but not too much jam band style. This album is a fantastic treat that consistently delivers great music, song after song. If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar albums then I recommend the following:
1) Beneath These Fireworks by Matt Nathanson
2) Good To Be Here by Ernest Goodlife Band
3) 1972 by Josh Rouse
delightful, bueno studio album.......2006-05-28
Space Wrangler is easily one of the best studio album from a jam band, ever. How this has gone under the radar for so long is beyond me. I borrowed this sucker and went out and bought a copy immediately. Space Wrangler is an album you'll want for summer nights. It has splashes of blues, jam, rock, and these really cool guitar and bass parts that are a trademark of Widespread Panic. There is a ton of variety in the songs too. Songs like Coconut remind me of Jack Johnson, although a bit jammier, and Porch Song remains one of my favorite songs ever. The song lengths are nice and average, which makes sense as this is a studio album.
The live renditions of these songs are good too, so check out some of the band's earlier live albums

this was such a cool soundtrack to own in 1996. Many of the songs became hits, notably R.Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly and Monica's For You I Will. There are also some good r&b tunes and hip hop numbers on this from artists like seal, salt & pepa, changing faces, coolio etc.
"Welcome to the Space Jam...".......2006-05-26
Okay, when the movie came out I went ape$hit (I was like 12) and I ran out to buy the soundtrack because it just had to be good. I was right, for every track her perfectly compliments the movie, ranging from the crowd pumping anthems like Quad City DJ's 'Space Jam' and Spin Doctors 'That's the Way' to inspirational ballads like R. Kelly's ever popular 'I Believe I Can Fly' and Monica's beautiful 'For You I Will' and everything in between. Standouts include the rap fused 'Hit 'Em High' where B-Real, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, LL Cool J and Method Man give us the Monstars theme, and the hilarious 'Basketball Jones' where Barry White trades lines with Chris Rock...insanity. Say what you will about the movie (I loved it) but this album is cream of the crop.

As soon as i watched space jam the film, i loved it and the songs that went with it.So i downloaded and copied onto a cd a few of the songs that appeared on the soundtrack album.I was disapointed as most of the songs i liked i couldnt get and i particularly liked 'Givin you all that i got' another song i was unable to download. But i was able to get my favourite song and that was 'Fly like an eagle' the main song of the film. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoyed the film and it really has some quality tunes on here. Most RnB and rap orientated songs but overall a soundtrack at its best.

Psych, prog, trance, electronica, ambient, techno, dance, jam, space. These are some of the musical territories where OT camps out. Based around the inventive guitar work, soundscapes and compositions of Ed Wynne, Ozric Tentacles' history has been one of never paying attention to the fashion of the time. For those music enthusiasts who make it their business to seek out the best and most creative music on the planet, OT have been a source of wonder and joy for more than twenty years.

Intense.......2007-06-14
I like this band very much. They seem to be a mixture of Brand X, Pink Floyd, and Tonto's Expanding Headband.
Spirals in Hyperspace.......2007-04-22
Last 3 cuts - I hear John Goodsall/Brand X, Mahavishnu, Gong's best instrumental sections, David Torn's "Tripping Over God", a more interesting Jan Hammer that doesn't revolve around such a shallow axis, a bit of Soft Machine Vol. 2's tightness and some interesting Ethno influence. These 3 cuts are so good that they make my eyes water and this is the best music I've heard since buying System 7's Water CD late last year ( I'm a bit late to the party). Parts of this CD are a cosmic "dance of Shiva" (Hindu) and are beyond words and I think that perhaps this group could fill the void that John Goodsall's absence has left in me.
I ordered the new Ozric after receiving this one last week; but, I'll take these one at a time because of the letdown of buying a bunch of System 7's after the Water CD.
To date, I have not heard a better utilization of synths, software, and programming with other instruments that lends itself so well to the bizarre and beautiful in such an interesting manner; the mastery of which, is pure genious. It's nice to know that with cut 7, Akasha, Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy can still come up with outstanding input beyond the commercial realm. You can't put a price on this CD. Buy it.

Now, I don't want anyone to take this wrong - because I own 4 CD's by these guys;Erpland, Afterswish, Jurassic Shift, and Spirals in Hyperspace, so I must like something about them - however, I doubt if I can name one of their songs, or even recognize which CD I'm listening to (which is why I have reposted this almost verbatim from my Erpland review - I wasn't sure which one I had just listened to - but this one seems to have more guitar) It's nice stuff to listen to... if you don't listen to it. Perfect background music for housecleaning or exercising. The problem with their prolific output seems to be that it all sounds like those "demo" tunes hard-wired into digital synthesizers since the 80's. I should know, I have 9 synths... and I bet most people couldn't tell the difference between the demo on my Roland SH-32 (this one sounds more Rolandish than Waldorfian) and anything on this album (I'm thinking maybe their earlier stuff might be exempt due to poorer production values).
They would have impressed me (and many others) more if they could have developed their little "sonic salads" into REAL songs and gotten a GOOD female singer the likes of Annie Haslam, Sandy Denny, or Jacqui McShee... not even that good really... well, just about anybody! I cannot see how anyone could go to a concert by them and maintain their attention span without some "chemical" fortification to pull them through it... and I suppose that's the point. But they've confined themselves to the realm of "so innocuous as to be ignored". The category of "Music to watch your cat drink Ginger Ale by" adequately filled by and forever licensed to Ozric Tentacles.
Sent into hyperspace.......2006-08-25
Take 2 parts Steve Hillage, 1 part Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream), and part Chick Corea style jazz, and what do you get?
Ed Wynn and Ozric Tentacles. If you like etheral or spacey progressive instrumental rock this group is for you. Plainly stated listening to Ozric Tentacles is like spiraling through hyperspace!!
Still Kickin'.......2005-09-05
This is still THE BEST prog-rock band out there. While many have dipped into rap + funk, OzT are still blazing trails. This album stands out from the rest in production and overall sound. From trippy synth to Ed's blazing guitar runs it is way too much fun to describe. If you only heard of this band and not bought anything-check this one out.

Dissapointed.......2005-08-16
As a huge DMB fan and a string player (cellist) myself, I was expecting more from this recording. It lacks energy, big time. Many of the songs feel under tempo and sloppily put together. The arrangements are great, it just doesn't seem to flow from there. Maybe I'll learn to love it, but right now after a few initial plays, it just doesn't sit well with me.
The Dave Matthews Band deserves a better tribute.......2005-06-24
While the tracks on this CD remain true to their inspirations and are very nice, the overall quality is lacking. The London Contemporary String Ensemble sounds much more impressive until you actually listen to the CD. I would recommend this CD to any big Dave fan - just take advantage of the ability to buy it used or discounted.
AmAzInG (especially sAtTeLiTe!).......2005-03-14
This CD is so amazing. So good that you can hear the music in your stomach. I love it, one of my best finds. At least in my top 5. Buy it. Love it. Put it on 'repeat'. Dig it. I sure do!
Close your eyes.......2005-01-27
One of the best ways to look at an artist/band's music with a new perspective is to track down some form of tribute, and the string quartet are the masters at it. I've often wondered if DMB would sound as good without Dave's famous voice, and this tribute captures all the magic of the band's music with that added clincher of being strings only. It's hard to listen without singing all your favourite lines along the way, but if you take the time to sit down, close your eyes and let the music carry you away you'll love DMB from this new, beautiful angle as much as I do...

Ozric Tentacles - 'Live At The Pongmasters Ball' (Madfish).......2004-09-28
If you were lucky enough to catch the Ozrics out on their U.S. or UK tour(s) during 2000-01,then you most likely have some idea as to what this 2-CD import is all about.'Live At...' provides us fans with an outstanding audio document of the band's concerts. From looking at the track listing,I believe their UK tour setlist may've been a bit different from their setlist they did while during their U.S. stay.I'll admit that I have heard one CD boot from their U.S. tour and 'Pongmasters Ball' does sound better.Just a great sound mix overall. Was somewhat taken away with several of the tunes that I heard, like the two rarely,if EVER played cuts "It's A Hup Ho World" and "The World Of G'bal",the well done "Saucers" and "Sploosh".Can't deny that I've always loved the band's lengthy numbers such as "Oddentity","Pyramidion","Dissolution" and "The Throbbe".Another worthy 'progressive/space rock' title.A should-have for ALL Ozric fans.
Incredible live album.......2003-05-14
This is my first dive in to live Ozric material (after already owning a most of their studio material) and I have to say I don't regret it one bit. This was a live album recorded March 2002 at the Shepherds Bush Empire with the lineup of Ed, John (who goes by Champignon on this album), Zia, Seaweed, and new drummer Schoo (Stuart Fisher). The material here dates from as far back as Sliding Gliding Worlds (particularly "It's a Hup Ho World" and "Kick Muck") to Curious Corn, with surprisingly no material from Waterfall Cities. Material from The Hidden Step is represented by only two cuts, "Pixel Dream" and "Ta Khut" (albeit shortened). Many of these songs are extended versions giving them a bit different twist as to not make them exact copycats of the studio originals. It's always interesting to hear the 2001-2002 lineup's takes on songs that date back when Joie, Merv (and later on, Rad) were still in the band. I thought the new drummer's style was a cross between Merv and Rad, and so he seem to have little problem alternating between the Merv and Rad-era material. This is how a live album should be: full of inspired playing and of the same high quality as their studio material. This is not like many other live albums by certain other bands where they go on ego trips and end up giving us a really tedious album to listen to. Not with the Ozrcs. Live at the Pongmasters Ball is a two CD set, means you get around two hours of music. If you can't get the chance to see the Ozrics live because of where you live (like me, for example), this is an excellent CD to choose.
Guess you had to be there.......2002-11-12
First things first, the recording is very good albeit somewhat reduced in volume level, 2 discs/Disc 1 is about 67m in length while Disc 2 is about 46m in length. Performance-wise, there are songs I wish they had performed but didn't. A lot of older material is done here, the esoteric stuff. The new drummer is fine but doesn't have the polish of past drummers (Merv was the best in my opinion) but he does make a good showing even if he tends to overuse that 'crash' cymbal a bit too much, that bothered me after awhile. All the other band members perform well. There is some commentary by John which is at times, hard to understand. Personally, I prefer older live recordings to this one: Spice Doubt, Live Underslunky are better in my opinion but as a collector I had to have this one.
Keep Jammin'.......2002-11-01
This band just keeps on going! I first heard them in '94 on a
local collage radio. I know I haven't been the same since.
They Played live a week later at Shank Hall. The roof there
is now higher!
This is the first recording with the new drummer.
It captures them just like always. The BEST band I ever heard.
I don't say that lightly. I own over 1000 alblums from the late 60's to today and have been listening to music for 30 years.
There is no other band like Ozric Tentacles!
GO SEE THEM LIVE!
Just what the Dr. ordered.... Excellent Live Recording!.......2002-09-23
I personally call their Style "Progressive Raving", you start of Dancing (and they outplay you...), then you sit down (Just like Joe Saunders wrote in the CD insert) and flow, flow, till your energy is back to Dance some more.
Well recorded, the Band sounds in top shape. One listening at good Volume and you'll Love it. By the way I own only Nine (9) of their Studio CD's and I'm two years shy of being 50.
The word "Groovy" comes to Mind... Naahh... must be a Flashback.
Keep on Rocking or Raving or whatever you call it!
Chao Pedro Caballo.
