Album Description

Mayday Parade is destined to follow in the footsteps of label mates Plain White T's and Sugarcult. Their debut delivers twelve radio ready pop tunes, including a re-recorded version of "When I Get Home, You're So Dead" and the MySpace tested single "Black Cat". Look for them on a co-headlining tour with Bedlight For Blue Eyes and on the Warped Tour.

4 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a great new CD pick this up!.......2007-07-18

I've been a fan of Mayday Parade for a long time, I think I played their demo cd so much that it no longer runs on my cd player! I was desperately awaiting this full-length studio album and am extremely happy and overwhelmed! Great lyrics / vocals and catchy riffs as well as hooks! If you're looking for up and coming pop-punk go with this! The only downfall is one or two songs sound alittle similar. The best thing about this band is their ability to display raw emotion through their lyrics - Black Cat's guitar riff is sick too! This definitely should be a part of everyone's 2007 Summer purchases!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-07-16

I first heard Mayday Parade on the 2nd Punk goes Acoustic CD. My expectations were high for this CD and it has totally exceeded them. Buy it! You'll love it!

Album Description

This melodic rock band from Florida has been holding strong in the top 30 music charts on MySpace and sold 10,000 copies of their self-released EP on the Warped Tour this summer without stepping on a single stage. They sold to kids in the parking lot and standing in line. Their debut breaks the cookie cutter mold set by MTV and the radio and brings listeners to a state of frenzy in an earth-shaking way. Look for them on tour this fall.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Cd Ever!.......2007-03-08

MayDay Parade's cd, Tales Told By Dead Friends is an awesome cd. i'd recommend to every one! these boys are great and awesome to their fans.

5 out of 5 stars Mayday Parade is way more that Amazing!.......2006-12-27

Being a connoisseur of good music, I look for bands that have some special to bring to the table. Standing in line at WArped TOur this summer I expected to hear a lot of new music. What I didn't expect was to have the highlight of my day standing in line at WArped TOur. Ever since then, I have listened to their ep multiple times. By far the best music I purchased all year. These guys bring triple-threat vocal harmonies, great guitar parts, and progressive style drumming. Each song on this ep is different. Lyics are amazing! Whether you've loved, lost, or been stepped on, this ep will speak to you!

4 out of 5 stars More fascinating music from former Lullaby members.......2003-07-25

If you are as fascinated by Ted Stevens' music as I am you will find another treasure within their new album. There's more great lyrics, some interesting songs, more support from the Saddle Creek guys (but no lead vocals with Conor Oberst this time). The album is somewhat more low-key than the previous effort but similar in style and quality.

If you have never heard Mayday, or Ted Stevens' previous band Lullaby for the Working Class, it is a depressed indie rock, with a touch of country or folk. Stevens' voice is deep and sad and he has a knack for powerful song climaxes. His lyrics are insurpassable, complex and like poetry. The songs are sophisticated and unorthodox.

Common complaints about Mayday is that they are boring and Stevens' voice is annoying, so buyer beware. However I think patient and thoughtful listeners would agree that this is not true. I would recommend Lullaby's Blank Warm as a powerful introduction to Stevens' style.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2003-07-25

Some bands are suited to lo-fi recording techniques. Some are not. Mayday is not. Yet for some reason, after an absolutely stunning debut, they opted to record this album with a gritty, lo-fi sound... And it just plain doesn't work.

That said, the songs themselves are quite solid. They lean more towards a country/bluegrass vibe (rather than the genre-busting, unclassifiable sound of their previous album), which could be good or bad depending on your personal tastes. However, even if these were the best songs ever written, they wouldn't be able to overcome the crappy production. It's quite frustrating to hear what you know is a good song, but be unable to enjoy it because the low-quality recording is mashing everything together into tuneless noise.

Basically, this is a worthwhile purchase if you absolutely love Mayday, and are willing to fight through the noise in order to appreciate the songs. Otherwise, spend your money on something more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars DA BOMB!.......2003-07-15

5 out of 5 stars The whole cd is sweet.......2005-04-23

I love every song on this cd and the interludes tell a great story. The harmonies are tight too! Troop did this whole album themselves and did it their way. You all need to check it out. I also want to say that the guys are back and are still sounding great! Meanwhile, definately get Mayday. You won't be disappointed! I miss this kind of music.

4 out of 5 stars Another great album from them.......2004-06-01

I remembered when Troop put out Mayday in 1998. I still can't believe that Atlantic Records dropped them from their roster in the mid-90s. But they picked themselves back up and put their album on an independent label. They still sounded good on that album. And I liked when one of the singers mentions one of their past hits, Mamacita, in a song, proving that they remember their past as well as looking to their future. I wished this album could have been promoted more, but I'm sure that they were happy with how it came out. I like that Steve Russell produced most of this album and the members wrote the songs on here. They have proven time and time again that they are a fabulous vocal group!

        5 out of 5 stars Troop... I love you!!!!!!!!.......2003-08-04

Troop you are my babies... all of your albums are the bomb. I'm missing you very much. Please come back, we need you out here in the R&B game.

5 out of 5 stars They always delivered the goods!.......2001-08-09

This has to be one of the most under-rated groups in R&B history. It seems as if this is Troop's last album as a group, and it's a shame. Even though Troop's lead singers' voices have somewhat diminished, this group still put it down - far more better than most of these other ,less equipped but somehow, more popular groups. The slows jams are the bomb. And there first release, an up-tempo, "The Way I parlay" is hot. If they had the proper management, they could of easily had blown up!

5 out of 5 stars i am glade that you are back.......1999-10-01

        Album Description

This is the third full-length from Nebraska's Mayday. Songs of death, dismemberment, drugs, greed, and devotion. Like the teenage death ballads of the 50's, Mayday casts an odd sort of instrumentation and lyricism into romantic ballads of the afterlife. Percussive, choral, upbeat, morbid, scatological, rootsy-indie-wit. A bluesy kuntry mythological storybook.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good CD from legendary Saddle Creek Records - it's not necessarily something to write home about, though.......2006-01-06

Mayday's "Bushido Karaoke" is made up of various Saddle Creek Records artists including members of Azure Ray, Bright Eyes, Cursive and Now It's Overhead. Unfortunately this pool of talent didn't really churn out a great album. "Bushido Karaoke" is a sadcore indie rock album at heart, and although it has its fair share of catchy tunes, most of it isn't great. There are no "bad" songs here, but they all still manage to sound cheesy and uninspired (partly due to the singer and how hard it is to make out some of the lyrics). The album sifts through several different moods - it'll be slow and emotional at one moment and fast and relatively energetic in the next. It's kind of interesting musically, but you won't really care enough about the songs to really study them. It's a good album, for all its flaws - its saving grace is that every song is at least kind've interesting and catchy. They aren't great songs though - they somehow lack that charm that gives, say, Franz Ferdinand or The Killers such great appeal (I gave both of those 4 stars each, too). For this reason alone I give it a "4" (you won't really care if you have these songs or not). Slightly recommended for indie rock and Saddle Creek Records fans.

        Highlights include:
        the entire album is decent-to-good

Mayday's third release is the best thing to happen to Mayday since their sophomore release, "I Know Your Troubles Been Long", which was the best thing to happen to Mayday since their freshman release, "Old Blood", which was simply the best thing to happen to Mayday, at that time.

All three were real bright spots in my life.

Their junior release (that's right, junior release) is fantastic - a veritable orgy of mellow that engulfs you from the bouncing piano of "Pelf Help" to the lilting banjo of the romantic ode to capital punishment "Song of the Scaffold".

        Are you still reading this?

        4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2005-08-18

Bushido Karaoke is easily Mayday's most straightforward release, with the songs being uniformly short, and generally catchy. Unfortunately, this means that the album has none of the slow-burning, sometimes-experimental songs that highlighted their previous work. But luckily, that's a small disappointment - there's still plenty to love here.

A few songs immediately stand out as some of the band's best to date. Particularly wonderful are the infectious, wistful-but-humorous "Pelf-Help" and the samurai death waltz "Hidden Leaves." And after a few listens to familiarize yourself with them, the rest of the songs grow just as appealing: "Exquisite Corpse" laughs exuberantly in the face of death, "Song of the Scaffold" is a refreshingly clever declaration of love, etc. These tunes are brief and simple in structure, but the instrumental arrangements are subtle enough to keep things quite interesting - horns, violins, banjos, etc. are constantly popping up in just the right place.

Essentially, what Bushido Karaoke lacks in adventerousness, it makes up for with consistency. It may not have anything as inventive as the suites on Old Blood, but there's not a single dud among these songs, and that's no small feat.

        1 out of 5 stars Finally, Nothing..............2005-07-31

        Review by Kyle Crawford:

Ted Stevens' main project Mayday may quite possibly be the most boring, mediocre Saddle Creek release to date. A heavy weight of sorts in the Omaha indie scene, Stevens fails to keep up to par with the likes of his friends and label mates such as, Tim Kasher's Cursive and The Good Life, and even the love him or hate him Conor Oberst.

Mayday's brand of music can be stripped down to a watered down version of Morrissey's vocals overtop an uninspired country-rock band with no direction. One of the things that captivate listeners of many Saddle Creek artists is the thoughtful lyrical format most of the bands seem to follow. While listening to Mayday's latest release, however, the listener may feel almost cheated as no cohesive element can be found throughout the entirety of the album.

What Mayday may indeed be, is the result of knowing and befriending the right people. All of Ted Stevens' closest friends are some of Saddle Creek's biggest stars, so it would just seem natural for him to be a star as well; unfortunately for all of us, he is not.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a really solid album from Ted Stevens.......2005-07-03

There's always been something about Ted Stevens' aesthetic that's kept me faithful to him (since Lullaby for the Working Class's album, Song) despite his never having released anything exactly mind-blowing. The latest Mayday release sees the band finally congealing into a modest, but solid band. There is no lack of quality on this album, although on first listen it sounds just like the previous two, both of which I failed to get much mileage out of. After listening to Bushido Kareoke a couple of times, I found myself wanting to hear more and more. If there's still some interested Mayday or Lullaby fans out there anywhere, then BUY THIS!

If you've never heard Mayday before, they've got a darker, traditional sound. I would actually liken this album to the Angels of Light's amazing new album 'Sing Other People,' in some abstract way. Both have similar textures and consistency, although Mayday's more uptempo. If you're a serious music fan, I'd definitely recommend adding it to your collection.
