POWERFUL!!!!!!.......2007-06-22
You will be amazed. Only after hearing his speaches I realized he was a powerful man. A man like that does not have a chance to live a long life in this world. Malcolm X speaks the truth and doesn't care if you like what he says or not. I love you Malcolm. I wish I was only alive to see you. May God rest your soul. Amen
This is powerful!.......2006-06-04
For those of us who missed seeing Malcolm in person, this will give you a sense in why he is a sage of the hightest order. I am humbled at his way in which he makes us think. Very powerful.
Inflammatory!!!.......2006-03-29
Malcolm X's words are as true today as they were then. Unfortunately, not as much has changed as what we may think. He was so inflammatory and provocative; I can't imagine how "either side" took his heated messages when he first delivered them. Absolutely mindblowing. I wish I was there to witness his charismatic delivery and the strength of his testimony.

Album Description
The late 1960s-early 1970s were a time of great change, musically and spiritually. Some of the greatest music ever written came to life in this era. At the same time, political speakers like Malcolm X, Huey Newton and Stokely Carmichael stepped forward to lead a generation. Two words sum up the movement: Black Power. This two-CD compilation culls the greatest hits of that era, bringing together both politics and the era's culture as accurately as any history book.
Includes rare sound bites from Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael and Huey Newton as well as out-of-print tracks by Sons of Slum, The Philadelphia International All-Stars and Watts Prophets.
Filled with huge hits that are constantly heard on radio, in film and TV, including Top 20 hits from The Chi-Lites, The O'Jays, James Brown, The Isley Brothers and Nina Simone.
Features the most outspoken artists of the era, such as Parliament, The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron.
This is the only domestic compilation available highlighting this era and is the first to tie together the political and cultural aspects of the times.
Liner notes by GRAMMY-nominated writer Gerald Early.
Customer Reviews:
Great collection of music..........2005-10-24
I love this collection. There are so many great songs here and the sound bites are good too. Huey Newton, Malcolm X, H. Rap Brown, and others are all interspersed with the music, which really makes everything flow from song to song. These discs capture a moment in time that shouldn't be forgotten, and this collection is one way to preserve it.
Good documentary-type cd.......2005-09-27
Aside from the absence of narration (aside form the spoke asides I am about to describe), this is a good documentary Cd of music and (snippets of) speeches during the Black Pride era of the 60s and 70s. Archconservatives would still have a fit over the speeches of Malcolm X (Stop Singing and Start Swinging), Stokely Carmichael (We Want Black Power) and few radio stations today would play the now-imprisoned H. Rap Brown's "Violence Is as American as Cherry Pie" ("We built this country, we'll burn it down if it don't do right.") It says something that H. Rap is the only speaker in this compilation that's still alive at this writing. But these clips by people who are seldom discussed today are historically important and do a good job of settign the atmosphere and mood.
Now for the music. Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone's anthems of the period are well known and easily available elsewhere, so I don't mind their omission. The tunes of the Watts prophets, Last Poets, Soul Children, and Sons of the Slum would be a revelation to the current generation as most of the issues discussed are still relevant. The forgotten Hank Ballard's "Blackenized" (about low self-esteem in Black America) is particularly thought provoking as is the Philadelphia All-Stars "Let's Clean Up the Ghetto" (as a child of the 70s who was well tuned into the local soul radio station at the time, I am surprised that I only remember actually hearing this tune once at the time).
It fittingly closes with McFadden and Whitehead's 1979 anthem "Aint No Stoppin Us Now", which aside from Stevie Wonder's "Hotter than July" lp the next year was the last major message song of the era. But as a whole, this is a great history lesson with a beat that you can dance to as well as think.
LOVE IT.......2005-02-10
THIS IS AN AMAZING CD, EVERYONE SHOULD BY THIS, BLACK WHITE, WHATEVER THE MUSIC IS JUST INSPIRING AND THE RECCORDINGS ARE GREAT.
GREAT MUSIC!!!!!
Unbelievable collection.......2004-08-26
The title caught my mind and the musical idea of it called to the spirit in me. The soundbites are tight and the lyrics are still powerful. It doesn't matter what your favorite type of music is, these cd's are righteous. Especialy "Compared to What". Simply put I'm loving it. Listening to this and walking down the street is like a soundtrack to the revolution. It puts a whole face to all those soundbites from the 60's and 70's. The revolution will not be televised, Pick this up while you can.
Right On, Brothas and Sistas!.......2004-06-08
Black Power is an compulsively listenable collection of soul and funk tunes that deal with political or social issues. Well-known cuts rub shoulders with amazing obscurities. Any hip hop fan will find the foundation of rap right here. Highly recommended to soul and funk fans as well.

Customer Reviews:
Atypical soundtrack.......2007-01-26
Most movie soundtrack albums include incidental orchestral music, while some have excerpts of actual film dialog. The soundtrack to MALCOLM X has none of this. The set opens with an Arrested Development political piece written especially for the film, then follows a logical musical and stylistic progression from the early 40s (swing), right through to the year of Malcolm's murder, 1965 (soul), and finally closes out with an overlong gospelish Aretha Franklin track.
The MALCOLM X soundtrack was given an average rating because its bookends (particularly the opening number) ill-fit the majority of the program-- just as Spike Lee's epilogue politicking (with young children declaring themselves to be Malcolm X) adds little to a well-told story.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 49:59
Malcolm X Soundtrack is Solid but Lacks One Powerful Song.......2002-08-07
Indeed, the soundtrack from the motion picture Malcolm X achieves its goal in capturing the music of the great Muslim leader's childhood and adult years. But lacking from the soundtrack is Sam Cooke's beautifully orchestrated song "A Change is Gonna Come," an inspirational civil rights anthem that is featured near the end of director Spike Lee's masterpiece but for some reason is not on the CD. This soundtrack would surely be worthy of a five-star rating if it weren't for this glaring omission.
Excellent variety of Black music.......2002-07-27
This CD gives a varied overview of the genres of Black music. Some of this covers Malcolm X's adolesence in the 40s with tunes by the Ink Spots, Billie Holiday, Joe Turner, Lionel Hampton, and Louis Jordan's comic masterpiece "Beans And Cornbread." Then we fast forward to Malcolm's heyday in the early 60s with songs like the atmospheric "Alabama " by John Coltrane and Ray Charles' version of "That Lucky Old Sun." Jr. Walker's "Shotgun," which was very popular in the Black community in Feb. 1965 when Malcolm was killed. Aretha Franklin 's version of Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All be Free" does justice to the original and the Arrested Development's "Revolution" symbolizes the connection of 1990s Black youth with Malcolm X (the obvious choice to do this, Public Enemy, bowed out of the making of this soundtrack due to their ties with the Nation of Islam, who were not pleased with their portrayal in this film, but that's another story). Overall, this soundtrack provides a good panorama of Black music history. Listen, learn, and enjoy.
Good CD.......2001-05-19
The greatest strength of this CD is the sheer variety of material - from the hip-hop resembling "Revolution" to John Coltrane's "Alabama." This is a very solid CD with an excellent sampling. Highly recommended.
Very Strong Record.......2000-07-26
Aretha Franklin really Shines on SOmeday we'll all be free.the Voice&The Vibe of the Music are both very moving.Louis Jordan's Great Cleaver Beans&Cornbread is timeless.he combines alot of styles with that Jam.The Soundtrack is Really Good.Check out Terrence Blanchard's Score.

It is a travesty that this score did not win an Oscar!.......2002-01-27
Here is another slap in the face of director Spike Lee. Terence Blanchard's score was truly worthy of an Academy Award, as were the film and acting performances of Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, and Al Freeman, Jr.
The score runs the gamut of old school jazz and swing to poignant melodic elegies detailing the turbulent times of the civil rights leader and his life. Every track vividly expresses the on-screen action, reveling in the expertise of the composer and the gifted storytelling of the director.
A marvelous complement to the movie and the man is this score.

Heard nearly four decades after its 1968 performance, The Malcolm X Memorial (A Tribute in Music) remains an ambitious, expansive achievement. The 12-piece ensemble opens with their vision of what a childhood Malcolm heard, played bluesily by none other than Pete Cosey on guitar. The conga-beating, chant-enriched "Malcolm X" is, in composer Phil Cohran's eyes, a musical portrait of Malcolm "awakening and embracing of Black values," as the original liner note claims. "Always talking brotherhood/White man you just ain't no good," goes the chant, and the music churns alongside. The tribute's second half is where the vision emerges: Charles Handy plays a fabulous musette solo to capture Malcolm's Eastern turn, and the band grooves via Bob Crowder's drumming. This is a great, audio verite snapshot of Chicago's musical genius, from composer/bandleader Phil Cohran on cornet to Cosey and Crowder and baritone saxist Donald Myrick. Interestingly, the funky turns in Malcolm go hand-in-hand with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians' aesthetics--wherein Muhal Richard Abrams and the Art Ensemble of Chicago were vigorously exploring free improvisation. Right here on Malcolm X is an aural illustration of how Chicago sits at the musical crossroads. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
Historical Jazz from some of the most influential musicians in Black Music. This recording was originally recorded in 1968 and was previously only available on vinyl. It is one of the most sought after recordings from Phil Cohran, who played with Sun Ra and was one of the founders of the AACM. Copies of the original vinyl sell for hundreds of dollars. Musicians on this recording include Don Myrick and Louis Satterfield, who went on to play with Earth, Wind, & Fire, Chicago guitar legend Pete Cosey, who went on to play with Miles Davis, and the great Master Henry Gibson who went on to play with Curtis Mayfield. This recording captures all of these wonderful musicians as well as others at their very best! Packaged in cardboard sleeve.

In 1982, Terence Blanchard replaced his hometown pal Wynton Marsalis in the trumpet chair in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and now Blanchard has emerged as Marsalis's only real rival as a modern composer of jazz suites in the Ellington mode. As the composer and orchestrator for Spike Lee's Jungle Fever and Malcolm X, Blanchard has displayed the ability to reinforce the shifting emotions of an ongoing narrative and to come up with striking melodic motifs that are repeated in altered forms throughout a long piece. Now Blanchard has taken the strongest motifs from the latter film and rearranged them for his brilliant jazz quintet, and has recorded the result as The Malcolm X Jazz Suite. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
BLANCHARD'S BEST........2002-11-20
This is without a doubt Terence Blanchard's best record. I don't think he's a trumpet player that records particularly well and this is before his days of smearing/ half-valving every second note which became downright painful. The band swings like mad in a really dark mood (mainly minor keys).
One of Blanchard's best!.......2001-08-08
The Malcolm X Jazz Suite is unique because it coincides with the Malcolm X soundtrack done by Spike Lee's father. Blanchard's is wonderful! If you are a jazz lover and soundtrack collector, get this!
Absolutely exquisite and impassioned.......1999-08-05
I know. You're thinking, "5 star status to a Terrence Blanchard album. Can he be that good? Can he really produce a classic?" Yes. For me, this is a classic work of introspective, quasi-symphonic post-bop. Unfortunately, many folks don't seem to know about this album. I'm not a big Blanchard fan. I don't really know a lot of his stuff. However, you will listen to this album repeatedly. It is deep, introspective, and workman-like. Blanchard was obviously very dedicated, contemplative, and passionate in his creation of this relatively obscure work. On this album, he is the consumate craftsman, composer, and player. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but What Are the Words?.......2006-07-04
This is a wonderful collection of music spanning many centuries, some of which you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. The performances are beautiful, too. The one drawback is that the liner notes contain very few song text translations, a big problem for a large CD set with music that is primarily vocal.
outstanding collection.......2002-09-27
I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.
Awesome.......2001-09-20
This is the best collection of medieval music I have ever heard. The performances are top-notch, and all of the songs are well done. I highly reccomend this collection not only for fans of medieval music, but for any music lover.
7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24
There isn't a clunker in this set. All the performers are top drawer and the recordings are good. The notes are a little brief and a bit scholarly, but can be ignored easily.
You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.
When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.
At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.
