Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.
In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16
Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.
However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".
With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.
Great tunes - great lyrics - great harmonies.......2006-11-04
If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.
I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.
John we miss you.
Love the Music.......2006-08-22
I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.
Larson Lives.......2006-05-06
I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving
Fantastic Music, but i wouldnt want to see it live.......2006-04-30
I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:
30/90
Green Green Dress
No More
Sugar
Come To Your Senses (originally from Superbia)
Louder Than Words
and i also enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

Sleeping again are we?.......2006-11-16
Well you are if you like Lionel Richie, or even good pop/soul. I can say pop/soul unashamedly because you know what Lionel brings to the table. Louder Than Words was easily his best since Can't Slow Down, and yes. it's good enough to be mentioned in the same sentence with the aforementioned gem. It actually gives "Can't" a good run for it's money if the truth be known. It is a fine, fine recording that probably will stand the proverbial test of time. Highlights? Take your pick really. I bought this when it first came out, and as soon as the first track started, Piece Of Love, I knew I'd made a wise decision. By the time I got to Nothing Else Matters, nothing else did. Good music is good music. There are still opportunities to add this to your collection. You may be pleasantly surprised if you choose to do so.
A masterpiece of Epic Proportion.......2005-12-15
In a world of disposable music and other musical atrocities it is comforting to have music of this caliber. In this great homeland of America we produce some of the best music in the world yet sadly not appreciated.Cds of this nature are bought and later sold for pennies on the dollar like a cheap used car.Music is food for the soul,it should be eaten and digested slowly and savor like fine wine.LOUDER THAN WORDS is a masterpiece and will be historically, one of Lionel Richie best written, best produced album period.
ballads & much more.......2005-01-10
This is a brilliant collection of songs from Richie, after much time away from recording and performing, and many changes, some of them hard...in his life. The CD has smooth and lovely ballads, with two great jazzy numbers in the beginning and end. The opener, "Piece of Love", is my favorite, with a great lyric and melody, and a superb vocal performance, as well as musicianship from the band; it's the only song on the CD not written or co-written by Richie, but fits in perfectly with his compositions. The other song with a strong jazz influence is "Lovers at First Sight", and "Change" is another strong number. "Climbing" is an interesting song, with its many time shifts, and almost classical feel.
Better late than never, though I had heard him (it was impossible not to in the '80s), this is the first Lionel Richie CD I've repeatedly listened to, and his artistry is impressive, as a writer and vocalist, with fabulous phrasing and musicality.
This CD was certified "Gold", and unfortunately it didn't spawn any hit singles; it should have done much better, considering the excellent quality of each track.
The insert, which folds out like a road map, has all the lyrics and recording info, and a few photos. The sound is terrific and total time is 61'23.
LIONEL IS BACK!.......2004-10-25
This album is near perfect! A lot of today's artists ought to listen to this cd and take some serious notes. This is how R&B should sound. There wasn't a track on this cd that I didn't like. It's well worth your money. The one track that stole my heart for this album was "Say I Do". It is a beautiful song for lovers and a wedding if it came down to it. I don't know what personal problems he's had,but it didn't affect his songwriting and singing skills at all. GO LIONEL! :)
An overlooked gem.......2004-05-14
I like to call this CD "The Return of Richie" because Lionel had not released anything new for quite some time. After being one of the most popular entertainers in the business throughout the 1980s, he was noticeably absent from the music scene from 1987 to 1992 due to personal issues. In 1992, he re-emerged with BACK TO FRONT, but that was mostly a greatest hits compilation with a couple of new songs thrown in. Four more years went by, and finally LOUDER THAN WORDS materialized in 1996.
For those people who complain that Lionel never did anything "soulful" after his departure from the Commodores, obviously they missed this CD, which is contemporary jazz and R&B but no one paid any attention to it. Urban radio largely ignored it, merely BECAUSE it was a Lionel Richie CD, except for a couple of songs that showed up on the Quiet Storm radio format. Pop radio thought it was "too urban" or not commercial enough for them. Either way, it is a shame, because this was probably the best CD that Lionel ever released after he split from the band and it was an obvious move to recapture his old R&B audience. Of course, Lionel covers his pop bases with tunes such as the country-pop feel of "Still In Love", "Can't Get Over You" and the grandiose ballad (and almost over the top) "Climbing", but this is overwhelmingly an R&B CD - and a good one, at that.
The CD starts off with the jazzy R&B ballad, "Piece of Love" and it's smooth sailing from then on. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who have produced Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, New Edition and others, do some good work here, along with the famous Richie lyrics (he wrote or co-wrote all of the songs except one). The sexy "I Wanna Take You Down" is Lionel's attempt at a hip-hop groove, and surprisingly, it works for him. It's reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's classic "I Want You" with an Ohio Players sample as the base. No, he's not spitting out rhymes like a rapper - he's not trying to go there - but merely using his speaking voice as a seductive instrument...and you want to LISTEN! Another track, "Don't Want to Lose You" is straight old-school soul - the old Commodores' hit "Just To Be Close To You" comes to mind right away. This is an extremely strong cut and although it was the single from this CD, it should have done better on the charts. "Say I Do" is a gorgeous, warm and beautiful contemporary R&B ballad that should have also gotten major airplay.
Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds contributes his trademark sound to the mellow but upbeat ballad, "Ordinary Girl", and it is one of the best songs on the CD...why, oh WHY didn't radio give this song a spin? Another missed opportunity for a hit! Lionel's co-producer from his Commodores' days and early solo career, James Carmichael, collaborates with Lionel on the jazzy R&B jam, "Change", a tune about a cheating spouse. It is yet another slamming song that would have been a major hit if it was promoted.
The remaining tracks are just as strong: "Paradise", "Nothing Else Matters" and "Lovers At First Sight" (Lionel does a great job here with this outstanding jazz arrangement). On LOUDER THAN WORDS, he proves beyond a doubt he is STILL the soulful guy that led so many of the Commodores' biggest hits and if you REALLY want to check out some excellent R&B, then look no further than this CD. R&B artists of today -- LISTEN AND LEARN!!

Finally Reissued on CD!.......2005-12-03
Candi Staton is one of those singers that can easily transcend different musical styles, whether it be gospel, southern soul, disco, quiet storm, or urban soul. This collection brings fans a long awaited arrival of her two Warner Bros. albums (CANDI-1974 and MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS-1977) on CD with 24-bit remastering that just sounds amazing.
The first album (CANDI) was released in 1974 and was her first album under Warner Bros. records. With CANDI, Ms. Staton was able to have a Top Ten R&B hit (#6) with "As Long As He Take Care of Home" and it included fine songs that were recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama. However, it was not a huge success and Candi decided to change producers, because she felt that it would be best to move with someone who was producing more in the disco/urban soul area. With that in mind, she recorded her next album (YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE -1976) with David Crawford. YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE also brought Candi a new change, recording in Los Angeles, California. With new musical styles chosen, Candi finally hit the top of the charts, with the title track reaching #1 on the R&B charts and making it to #20 on the Pop Charts.
The following year 1977, Candi recorded MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS with producer Bob Monaco (who was well known for his work with Rufus). In MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS, the songs had a more pop/rock feel to it and provided Candi with a slightly different sound. However it was not as big of a hit as YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE. But my favorite songs on MUSIC SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS are "You Are", "When You Want Love", her soulful interpretations of the Doobie Brothers' hit "Listen To The Music" and the Bee Gees' "Nights On Broadway", and the very feel good instrumental "Cotton Candi". The latter is a wonderful instrumental that is very reminiscent of the mid 70s and reminds of what it must have been like to hear something like that in a department store. Overall both albums are wonderful and showcases Candi in two different styles of music.
Now all we need to make Candi's Warner Bros. years complete are CHANCE (1979) and CANDI STATON (1980). With CHANCE, Candi went for the big disco sound and with her self-titled album we get a wonderful sound of urban soul with quiet storm thrown in. My favorite Candi Staton album while she was at Warner Bros. is CANDI STATON. So hopefully David Nathan will release those two fine albums on CD as well!! That will make the collection complete!!!

Not a classic like untouchable, but still good.......2003-05-22
This was an album that i took a risk at buying, but i feel it was a good risk. It has some wack tracks, but the majority is good. mall needs to just produce every track with Khayree, he is just the man. not to say anything bad about the production on this album because it's solid, it's just that mall does he best work with khayree. but pick up this ablum, you won't be disappointed.
The return..........2003-05-21
Mac Mall's latest, Mackin Speaks Louder Than Words, is the return of Mac Mall at his finest. While not his best work, there are numerous glimpses of his potential. He finally puts out an album that recalls his earlier work (his best). Tracks like "Power Moves The Family" and "All on a B@#ch" prove that Mac Mall still has what it takes. Check this album out, it's his best since 96's Untouchable.

A lot more mixed than you'd guess........2007-05-02
Guitarist James Blood Ulmer will probably always be associated with Ornette Coleman. Blood's was part of a now legendary (and never recorded) quartet of Coleman's and featured Coleman on his debut record. It seemed it was only a matter of time until an album of Coleman tunes was recorded by Ulmer, and "Music Speaks Louder Than Words", from 1997 is that album. Unusually, it's also something else now and again too.
Ulmer is backed by two bands-- acoustic bassist Calvin Jones and drummer Rashied Ali or electric bassist Amin Ali, drummer Aubrey Dayle and keyboardist Michael Mustafa Ulmer. The material with Jones and Ali really shines-- Jones sticks close the model of Charlie Haden on bass but Ali is a monster, all over the place, freely associating and providing a great framework on which Ulmer can work-- look no further than opener "Lonely Woman" for a fine example of this. Jones patiently offers anchor, Ulmer slips in and out of tempo, and Ali provides a framework where Ulmer's playing works perfectly. The electric stuff is a bit different-- they tackle a pair of Coleman tunes and three Ulmer originals. The Coleman songs are both fantastic-- "Elizabeth" gets a nice straight reading and "Cherry, Cherry" (with Jones guesting) featuring a fine free structure that really seems to get the point of Coleman's music.
Now to be clear, I love Blood Ulmer's singing, and these are vocal pieces. I think "Blues Preacher" is one of the really great records, but this is a mixed batch. Admittedly, "I Can't Take It Anymore" is ok, it's a straight blues, neither fantastic nor horrible, but "Dance in the Dark" and "Rap Man" are both pretty much train wrecks. Ulmer mumbles his way through, dominated in volume by the backing instruments. Worse still, they're both really bad. If this were on a major label, I'd assume the label made him do it, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they're on this record.
I'm giving this three stars, but it's a tough rating to issue out, the Coleman covers are so strong it's hard not to love this record, but there's such a mixed batch of stuff on here, it's hard to think highly of it.
the music DOES speak louder than the words.......2000-06-12
The good news is that when this record is good, it's GREAT. The bad news is that when it's not good, it's really, really not good. With six cuts of Ornette Coleman covers and a truly great set of side musicians, this could have been a near-perfect recording (definitely 5 stars). Unfortunately, Ulmer includes three originals of sung r&b songs (these aren't terrible songs, it's just that Ulmer's lyrics and singing can't begin to compete with his own incredible guitar playing). On the instrumentals, Ulmer's harmolodic playing has never been better, especially on the opening cut "Lonely Woman." Ironically, the title of the recording might have informed Ulmer (let the music speak for you man, it says so much more than your words). The definitive Ulmer record is still "Tales of Captain Black," and if you can afford the import $, it comes more highly recommended.

Gustavo captures the secret Gypsy soul of Klezmer!.......2006-01-16
A wonderful album from a gifted musician. Gustavo brings expressiveness, energy and major improvisational chops to his interpretations of some classic Klezmer pieces - and in doing so, he goes back to the earliest roots of the Klezmorim - the travelling Jewish musicians who went across every country in Europe - and who often intermingled and played with their musical cousins the Gypsies. In the opening piece, Ot Azoi, Gustavo cleverly has his rhythm section give an underlying syncopated swing to the piece which is part traditional Cajun, part Calypso - and totally wonderful. Later, in Zemer Atik, he explores the middle eastern roots of Klezer music - and shows why, musically speaking, Jew, Arab and Gentile are really brothers. I could go on and on but at a certain point words lose their precision - and the important thing is: this music ROCKS. 21st Century Klezmer soul with some syncopated gypsy swing - what a combination. A fine addition to anyone's CD collection - whether you are a hardcore Klezmer Music maniac (like yours truly) - or merely someone who loves wonderful electic world music. Bravo, Gustavo!
